Colonel O'Neill, care to explain why, despite spending billions in taxpayer dollars, your team has failed to retrieve even one single good stargate game? Gentlemen, Senator Mckinsey is threatening to shut this program down and if you can't give me answers there is nothing I can do to stop him.

I remember Daniel saying Go'auld at first and then switching to Goold. Then there are characters that say Goold, but occasionally say Go'auld. Rule of thumb I think is Earth characters call them Goold because 'merica can't be assed to pronounce it.

yeah, it suffers from lack of budget in s1 and 2 but from the s2 finale onwards it gets what it needs to really come into its own and gets a lot of good episode variety while building out pretty incredible lore and a lot of storylines that come together in a really satisfying fashion in s8. then they kinda milk it for 2 more seasons and some spin offs

atlantis is genuinely terrible, shits on sg1 lore, acting/writing/dialogue everything is bad except one of the wraiths is mildly entertaining.

Babylon 5 is like star trek but less israeli and dumb (though still quite dumb) and eventually actually has quite a good plot. Some characters are very good but writing varies terribly.

Farscape is the best scifi (or sci-fantasy) show but the start is kinda weak because it was just a vehicle for henson showcasing. After that they got freedom to do what they want and you end up rape and genocide interspersed with fart jokes. It's mixes low budget camp and serious story beats so it's not everyone's taste.

Atlantis is fine, but not SG-1 levels of constant quality. Its highs are just as high, but its lows are a lot lower.

Atlantis suffers from occasional aimlessness due to the writers coming up with, and later abandoning, major plot points that are too challenging for them to follow up on; a wide cast of characters, some of whom get to engage in none of their supposed expertise on-screen; and asspulls galore to save/end dead-end episodes before the 50 minute mark. The set design is also of lower quality, though the city of Atlantis itself is cozy as frick. SG-1's writing screams "we're doing our best with what we've got", while Atlantis frequently goes "eh, good enough".

Atlantis still oozes soul for its first 3 seasons. Season 4 was when SG-1 had ended and Atlantis became the sole SG series on TV, and it was already spent by that point. It just couldn't carry the franchise alone. Seasons 4 and 5 are mid and tired, though still manage to include a few of the entire franchise's best episodes.

Atlantis gets some hate, and a lot of it stems from it not being as brilliant as SG-1. In my opinion it's still worth a watch, especially if you find yourself loving the general idea of the Stargate franchise. Just do the chronological order thing (starting at SG-1 season 8, watch one Atlantis episode for each SG-1 episode) so it won't get a chance to wear you out.

Atlantis isn't as good as SG-1, but it's still worth watching if you want more Stargate.

Universe just kind of sucks and doesn't get decent until close to the end, then ends on a cliffhanger.

The sad thing is that stargate could probably never work as well as it does in mods for other games such as Gmod RP servers or minecraft. Those have dedicated fans working for free on-top of a framework of an already established game, and if they were to make a story-based game which would be dope it would cost too much for a shovelware game.

The game insists on keeping up with so many variables per each pawn (despite running on a single CPU core), it starts grinding to a halt once you amass a large enough population. It's a goddamn shame because establishing a realm of your own with multiple sites and a functional economy would be such a great endgame goal to strive for in a game like Rimworld.

Most games run on a single core
Multi-threading slows down game computations because it has to stitch the outputs together after processing, this usually isn't a problem for games, but processor intensive games like Rimworld and strategy in general really show it
Google, alternatively, open your task manager while you play and look at the processor load moron. That said, they've introduced some limited multi-threading to the game lately for low end calculations, lifting some of the burden it used to put on a single core.

Can't find the specific tweet, but the dev himself has discussed the issue before. Multithreading in general is a complex game design hurdle that simply didn't fit the game's original scope as the dev laid it out. The majority of the game logic runs on a single thread (I said core in the first post, that wasn't quite right), though naturally some things, such as audio, are easy to separate to their own threads.

With the amount of variables Rimworld pushes around per tick, that single logic thread ends up really busy. There are mods out there that drastically improve the game's performance by reducing the rate of update for some less important variables (RocketMan), so there's a little less the game has to do per tick, but the load is still almost entirely on that single thread. Being highly CPU-intensive, Rimworld thus benefits massively from CPUs with high single core performance (high IPC and clock speed). Same goes for other CPU-heavy games such as Dwarf Fortress, Paradox grand strategies etc. Anything that has to keep track of a lot of numbers.

                What

Most games run on a single core
Multi-threading slows down game computations because it has to stitch the outputs together after processing, this usually isn't a problem for games, but processor intensive games like Rimworld and strategy in general really show it

said is news to me, but even limited multithreading would be welcome in a game like Rimworld. That said, it's never going to be a linear improvement in performance due to the sheer complexity of having to figure out what, and when, you can effectively multithread without stalling the entire thing.

                Anonymous

Even with the multi-threading it now has, it still doesn't run as efficiently as it used to with all the additions the game has had over the years. It really isn't something that can be fixed and will continue to run worse and worse as the game becomes ever more bloated. Woe to those moronic fricks with 300+ mod lists, god forbid anyone unironically using VE.

Turn-based tactical/base management sim like Xcom really would work better for a Stargate game than something like Rimworld. It's such a fricking miserable turn of events that we never got anything like that and probably never will. We do have AI voice synthesis now though, so who knows, we could actually get a game with Hammond in it now.

So many suitable genres out there, and all we ever stood to get were shooters and an MMO. I hope, in the future, when the state of western media has recovered from its current absolute state, Stargate will still be on the mind of someone influential.

the only real issue i had withh it (aside from kratos wanting to frick every white chick he could get his hands on) was the retconn of the goa'uld

end of the movie, ra looked a lot like an asgard (when he's going back up to his ship, and they send the nuke)
in the show they're these weird worm looking creatures.
either is fine, just the discontinuity was a bit jarring =/

the movie is basically non canon at this point. oneill is a completely different tone of character, the ship is just a straight up pyramid and doesnt have the superstructure around it. Ra barely gets mentioned in the series and his death apparently didnt matter to the system lords.

well, i chalked up o'neill's change to coming to grips with his son's death, i can forgive that one.
it's been a while since i saw the early episodes, but i thought they mentioned him quite a lot in the whole apophis story arc?
          either way, pretty minor stuff.

Not him, but it's generally understood that female Jaffa serving as foot soldiers is not a typical thing amongst the system lords, minor Goa'uld don't seem to have such scruples when it comes down to it, but for the most part, they seem to just stay home from what we've seen. It makes a lot of sense since the snakes take a lot of their inspiration from mythology and prevailing human attitudes from those points in history.

a military force that tries to aim staves as ranged weapons is not one you should expect any rationality out of

                Anonymous

Not having female troops is the rational thing, ironically, even the US military has studied and determined that females literally cannot compete with men in terms of combat utility because they just can never get as physically strong as men can as a rule with very few exceptions. They do it anyway of course, since nobody really gives a frick about infantry these days, and it's not as crucial in services like the air force.

That said, Jaffa literally have superhuman physical abilities and endurance thanks to their symbiotes not to mention they're slave armies, so it shouldn't apply to them regardless.

Already mentioned that, and the service isn't structured so you put the lowest scoring in physical fitness tests in cushy jobs, that's why the US Army had to lower the minimum score to pass so they could have enlisted women. These are their own fricking words, Anon. It's not a political oh-you're-just-a-chud thing, it's an actual reality with study behind it.

you back and read the post you stupidly replied to without comprehending. a technologically advanced military that doesnt have to rely on muscle any more is foolish to ban women. even if there was some job that absolutely required hauling 100 lbs on a 12 mile hike, having women in your service to operate your tanks, drones, helicopters, boats, logistics services, frees up more men to do that one specific job and makes your military more effective and powerful. Try to read and not be moronic.

thats how we operate right now you fricking moron. we are currently experiencing a recruitment crisis and if we stopped recruiting women and got rid of the ones we had the military would become instantly non-functional. every removal of gender barriers to service was driven because of manning shortages and not because of the advocacy of equality. A technological force needs well educated volunteers interested in a career to be effective. There are not enough men interested in a military career to man the force. Women can do 90% of military jobs exactly the same as a man can. Ergo it is advantagous to have a mixed force. going to a draft will not solve this problem because a poor uneducated dumbass on a 2 year enlistment cannot operate networked weapon systems and it would take literally longer than his enlistment to teach him how.

And no one said they shouldn't be in the forces, but the fact is that they don't have the combat utility needed for frontline units, they failed the standard fitness tests even after the bar was lowered so they'd be able to pass. Infantry still have to march and run while carrying a full combat loadout, which women cannot and never will be able to do as effectively as men can, that's the undeniable truth.

You say it's irrational for a technologically advanced army to not have women in it, did you fricking forget that the Goa'uld don't hand out the fanciest of their toys to the rank and file? They conduct the Jaffa like a feudal army with better weapons. They're still wearing chainmail and plate for frick's sake.

                >a fighter pilot is a front line unit. a CRUDES or SSN is a front line unit. a tank and an IFV is a front line unit.
We're talking infantry, moron, and you know it. There are only so many vehicles, if you gave every enlisted women who fails the standard fitness test an aircraft or a tank, you'd have no infantry and a surplus of vehicle crews. It's also worth noting that even in damage control drills in the navy, women still fall short of the mark. You also need a great deal of physical fitness to be a pilot to deal with g forces, women fall short in that area too.
                >jaffa have enhanced strength and endurance like someone else pointed out.
                I pointed that out.
                >they dont carry gear
They run around in chainmail and plate armour, which is a lot heavier than you think it is. Jaffa have enhanced physical fitness, but that still means that female jaffa are physically inferior to their male counterparts.
                >they move heavy shit like the sarcophagus around on anti gravity
And yet we never see them use this for anything, so it's literally irrelevant
                >and they ride literal spaceships to get to where they are going, they dont march.
If you actually watched the show, the faster ships that take hours to get where they're going is incredibly recent technology, before that, it was jaffa being marched through the gates if they weren't being transported by ship for actual months or years. They still have to march when it comes to occupying planets even with the faster ships.

What the frick are you even trying to prove here? Women are physically inferior to men, this is a proven fact and you're working yourself up into an autistic tizzy trying to dance around it. If you're going for a "Ackshually, you can just put women in physically undemanding roles." Then that is literally not how any military works, fictional or not, and I dare you to provide a single fricking example. I'm pretty sure if they had ships like these they had vehicles. We never seen tanks or APCs, but there's no way they didn't have them. Maybe because they'd be too big to fit through the gate? I don't think you could fit a Bradley through the gate, let alone an Abrams, although both would wreck Jaffa if they don't have counters. We do see them with turrets in one episode, and they can have an autocannon staff weapon analogue that Teal'c uses for a while.

That's what I thought, but they model ships frequently enough. Couldn't they cover a bulldozer with metal plates, add a turret with a staff cannon, and use CGI to make it hover?

                Anonymous

Probably? But you have to remember that practical effects like that are far more expensive than short, entirely CG segments. Stargate's budget was already pretty small and they never really knew for sure which season would be their last.

Jaffa armour seems to be decent against bullets. I don't remember if it protects against staff blasts. It would be more than enough to protect against arrows and spears when they're raiding primitive human worlds.

                Anonymous

In the early seasons, Jaffa armor does well against hollow points and FMJ, but AP rounds go right through it. They never stood up well against Teal'c when he was using a staff weapon, one shot was usually enough to drop them. Oddly enough, it can take several to kill Teal'c himself even without armor.

Teal'c's son can also shrug off a staff blast to the back, it must run in the family

It's huge. Right now the British Army is being sued because making women march unironically damages their hip bones, sexes developed differently Anon. Denying biological reality is moronic, it's impractical to have women as frontline troops but we do it because of progressivism. always thought stargate was a bit bland, plus after a couple seasons it really turns into one of those time wasting shows where nothing ever happens. but a game could still be cool, the original idea with ancient alien egyptian gods could be cool. what kind of game would it even be? fps? adventure?

Team management sim. You recruit them from somewhere, train/etc them in your base and send them through the gate. Then the team eventually comes back if at least one guy survives and you get their after-action report.

the "whoosh" (that's what it was litterally called) only came out in the center, and about 60% of the circles area. There's an episode where a dude stands in front of an opening gate, gets caught by the whoosh, and his smoking feet are left behind, so it's clear it hits about a 16 inches above the ground.
So ramps and floors where safe so long as they where installed correctly, which obviously the ancient designers of the things understood.

I get that, but the show was described as at least somewhat hard science.
The air force runs the stargates and they follow protocol and the soldiers follow combat tactics and the gear tries to be realistic and etc.

It was sold to me as at least a bit believable so that's why I got disappointed.

It's accurate when you view it through the lens of reconaissance. As for Hammond having a line to the president, there's obviously an extremely good reason for that, and he never uses it to change the president's mind, it's always to go over the heads of his superiors in rank. He's technically not supposed to be doing that, the red phone is for notifying the president of extreme emergencies, not as a get-out-shit-free card.

its also lol that the airforce is in charge of a program that is primarily ground reconnaissance and diplomacy. air force ground based forces are for targeting air strikes and of course SG teams have no access to air support. JTACs job is not to engage in combat nor are they particularly better at it than any other grunt. SEALS, Force Recon, or Rangers would make way more sense.

They do have marine units that go on missions in the SGC, it's just SG1 that's this weird flagship unit that doesn't play by the rules. O'neill's history isn't gone into too much, just that he's special ops with a history, but his skillset is pretty similar to air force pararescue units, and they are 100% suited for these kinds of missions.

Literally impossible for a sci-fi show. Nobody can know how a universe in which e.g. teleportation works would function. It's impossible to be consistent unless you have a complete understanding of the fundamental physics of your universe, which we don't even have in our real one. It's also why the whole discussion in those portal threads is pointless. Just enjoy the sci-fi aspects like you would enjoy magic.

like 60% in early seasons then it reduces to like 10-15% down the line. the first two seasons literally have "recap" episodes that are just reshowing footage of earlier episodes to save money for a big finale which is hilarious to have in a season 1

The whole time dilation thing was exaggerated because it's a TV show, the real consequence would be that if the time dilation was that bad then the whole planet would be getting ripped apart by tidal forces already, but if you can ignore that one detail pretty much the whole rest of the episode is consistent and relatively scientifically accurate for a TV show.

Isn't the story that a star imploded and created that black hole but they somehow had no idea the star was gonna do that and also it didn't produce a supernova?

          Anonymous

they dialed a gate that was caught in the event horizon of a black hole. the gate wouldnt shut down because time on the other side was basically frozen so the 38 minute rule didnt apply. the time dilation experienced from the warping of space time was used as a plot device with some non scientific modifications like it increasing over time and not instantly destroying earth for narrative purposes.

            Anonymous

The increasing over time thing was supposed to be because the Stargate was getting closer to the hole. There were concerns that the gate could withstand the increasing effects for quite a lot longer than the Earth, if I recall correctly.

            Anonymous

Yes but the black hole was not there from the beginning.
The premise was that the black hole appeared in the sky during their mission because a star exploded and created it, but the supernova somehow didn't affect them and the black hole just teleported next to the planet somehow.

I don't think they really figured out Jonas' role as a character so he kind of is just around. Like his backstory is being an alien scientist but SG1 already had a resident alien and scientist so that's nothing. There's the "I'm a quick study" bit to set up being the taking over as the human encyclopedia but nothing really comes of that so he's not even replacing the guy he's replacing. He unironically develops self-sacrificial tendencies because, in-universe, he can't justify why he should actually be out on the field. This is the most "something" he gets.

Shanks also voices Thor, he wasn't removed entirely from the show, he was just brought back in for cameos, they paid him by the word. He came back full time because he realised he wasn't worth as much as he thought he was in the industry.

It's a shame they never brought him back. The Atlantis crew just disappeared as well, since they never got the film they were supposed to get. O'Neill was to get a film as well that I strongly suspect would've ended with him marrying Carter (Since that never actually went anywhere).

i think also they were so used to dealing with energy weapons their defenses were adapted/specialized to counter them. sort of like soldiers of today don't have a ton of protection from a sword or club, because they don't routinely face them.

The System Lords were locked into eternal stagnant warfare out of fear. Every one of them wanted to be top dog and rule over the others but none of them wanted to develop new weapons or tactics, go on the offensive and lose it all to luck or treachery.

That and the more advanced their personal equipment was over the Jaffar the longer they could pretend they were really gods and not technology hoarding parasites.

unlike most shows they have a pretty reasonable explanation for that. the goa'ulds are just feudal lords who rule over primitive peasants using fear, awe and stolen technology. They rarely innovate and the only enemies they fight are each other, using the same technology and it's mostly ship vs ship battles (and their motherships are pretty decent unlike everything else).

First season especially is busy wringing drama out of the characters to get anything done. There's a couple of decent episodes, but mostly nothing substantial happens.

Season 2 starts off on a similar note, just a little lighter. The second half of season 2 is straight SG-1 tier sci-fi gold, and then the show ends on a bullshit cliffhanger. It could've gotten so good, had it gotten more seasons. Alternatively, it would've been so much easier to forget it had it been canned a season earlier.

It's fine. People who have seen it all and are rewatching would probably not bother alternating SG-1 and Atlantis episodes, but for a first time watcher following this would align with the original watching order / airing date.

tng and ds9 are the only ones worth watching and easily the best of these kind of shows

      Anonymous

TNG and if you like TNG go to DS9. Then the rest it doesn't matter. Also be aware that all the treks take 2 seasons to hit their stride and that the 1st 2 seasons can be hit or miss, so you might not immediately like it. also if you watch DS9 and decide you like it, watch Babylon 5.

      Anonymous

Absolutely give the original series a shot. It's comfy.

      Anonymous

TOS ranges from amazing to mediocre depending on the episode, but there are certainly some gems worth watching. TNG is overall pretty good as long as you skip season 1 (the Q episodes are still worth a watch though). DS9 is pretty much peak Trek, though it's a lot more somber and down-to-earth compared to the uplifting atmosphere of TOS and TNG, so be prepared for that. VOY is mediocre overall, with the episodes that revolve around the Doctor being the ones that stand out the most as good quality trek. ENT is a series that had lots of potential, but it was ruined by a bunch of bullshit having to do with the Temporal Cold War, only a few episodes out of the entire series are worth watching, and most of them are in Season 4.
I would also just pretend that any series released post-2009 under the Star Trek label doesn't exist or at the very least is not part of prime canon.

Definitely TNG. Then give TOS a shot. If you don't like it, go to DS9. Then Voyager. Enterprise is mostly meh. Nu-Trek is a complete waste of time.

      Anonymous

TNG/DS9 aren't worth missing out on if you enjoy Star Trek, DS9 falls off near the end because the writers went pants on head moronic but the majority of it is good. There's a reason Gul Dukat is remembered to this day and posted so often.

the first 1 and a half seasons being "explore samey forest planet #312 with primitive earth culture of the week" make it hard to get into. Once they start opening the apeture with the asgard, the tok'ra, and seeing the working of the system lords and hinting at the ancients the show gets much more compelling

The sad thing is that stargate could probably never work as well as it does in mods for other games such as Gmod RP servers or minecraft. Those have dedicated fans working for free on-top of a framework of an already established game, and if they were to make a story-based game which would be dope it would cost too much for a shovelware game.

      Anonymous

Procedurally-generated dungeons are all the rage nowadays, you could absolutely cram a series of encounters into a single planet. The biggest issue there is having wild enough writers to add a shitload of different stories, which games like FTL already manage well enough.

Too bad that godawful basebuilder that was on last NEXTfest is the closest we'll get to that, and it flubbed the concept on every level.

I'm still disappointed about Universe being canceled. Yeah, Atlantis fans were justified in being upset about Atlantis being rushed to a conclusion and Universe had a really obnoxious faction conflict focus for way too long but damnit there was a good idea and it had just found its stride.

Universe was fricking gay. SG1 literally made fun of shows being younger, darker and edgier in episode 200, and Universe went ahead and did precisely that. I remember falling asleep when the first fricking episode premiered.

        Anonymous

The post you replied very obviously described the show changing significantly before it was canceled, indicatiing that it started pretty bad and became something interesting (as happens to so many shows). It was no "darker and edgier" than a typical "dark and edgy" sequence of SG1 or Atlantis. It just didn't have a bunch of camp to contrast. You're just a "CHANGE BAD" homosexual. Or, to put it another way, a stupid sub-genre purist like fans of a band flipping around to shittalking them when they shift style STILL WITHIN THE SAME GENRE. There's a bunch of older sci-fi TV shows tonally like Universe without some frickwit like you trying to paint the death of art.

with missiles. a M2 browning is notoriously innaccurate and dififcult to handle. There is no way to aim it based off a remote feed. In a confined space like the gate room it would be a huge danger to people and equipment from richochets and head space and timing would pevent them from even traversing it at all since they are so close. .240s would be better but realistically the entire defense force needs to be backed up and they should have installed actual purpose built fortifications for them to man.
