I'm all for criticizing Valve or any video game company if they've actually done something wrong which deserves criticism so that they and other developers can learn from their bullshit or mistakes, and hopefully do better. You can also go down to 9w (11 is really the minimum I'd want for smooth frametimes) but battery life is still around 2 hours. Not sure how he's getting 4 without an fps cap.

I put the graphics at "High Performance", I disabled Depth of Field (idk if that does anything for battery I just think the effect is annoying), and used these settings. 4w sometimes dips to 55fps in subcon though, 5w sticks to 60 but the battery life is closer to 3 hours with that. Sorry for talking out of my ass anons...
That makes more sense. It's still great when you consider the Switch version only runs at maybe 4-5 hours at half the framerate with dips and N64 textures. So glad I just waited.

I use my laptop for art and music and since I travel often I decided to buy a Deck to play my Steam games instead of building a desktop just to leave it abandoned on my house. I use it daily and I have just finished doing some Raya Lucaria exploration on Elden Ring. The Deck is great but yeah if you have a PC then I don't think that it'd be a good investment.
I use it 3 hours every day minimum

I'd say 3 hours for a handheld isn't great, but it isn't awful either, and you can get external batteries that will expand on that a lot if it's a big issue for you.
It's definitely something to consider but I don't see it as an issue that just completely sinks the deck.
To put it in perspective, 3 hours is roughly what the switch lite or original switch has as it's battery life when running it's most demanding games, and lots of people like or accept the battery life there or don't even mention it.

It is literally a better battery than the switch's which is the only other real option and it is hilariously sad that people on Ganker of all places will try to spin a portable device being able to play modern major releases at sometimes ultra settings 60fps into a negative about battery life while ignoring that if you nuke those settings and play weaker games that'd be on par with the switch it lasts way longer than 3 hours.
Console fanboys are really something else working against their own self interest to defend corporations that bend them over the table.
I think what I've learned over time is that despite their protests, people really like taking it up the ass and being told what to do, what to think, shut down, and locked to a limited set of options.
It's easier, and for some reason it makes them feel at home, and for most people that's enough.
Choice paralyzation is very real and it applies to everything the deck is capable of. Most people don't want to have to think, they just want to be told what to do, even if it'd only take a little bit of time to get a vastly better experience. It's easier. And it's easy to exploit.

It's showing around six hours whenever I am playing PS2 games, I never play that long so I can't confirm it as completely accurate, but I've played close to three hours in one sitting and it was around 55% left. Most of the time at home I just plug it in to the outlet on my side table so I don't even think about battery life.

I don't think I would gain much by buying a Steam Deck as I already own a non-hacked Switch Oled as my main gaming platform for japanese vidya, which replaced my desktop PC. And if I were to seek for a moment retro emulation on a portable device, I still have my old hacked Vita Slim.
Steam Deck is also not as convenient as the Switch in regular use, as it looked like a fat GameGear when I tried it from a relative of mine. The idea of the Deck remains cool but again it's a different device that aims for a different audience, but I know this is Ganker and everything must be consolewar bullshit.

I just had a thought, can you play local multiplayer between 2 steam decks or a steamdeck and a PC? I googled it, and all I found was "couch coop" where you share the same screen or the shitty "remote play" where you still share the same screen, but now over wifi.
I mean the same way that 2+ Nintendo DSs or 3DSs or PSPs would wirelessly hook up without the need of a wifi or ethernet connection and you each have your own screen. I remember it was called ad hoc multiplayer on PSP.

I think it's worth it. Sometimes the weather is beautiful and I just want to sit on the back porch while I play. It looks/works great outside. If you're 110% certain you'll never play it outside then maybe not. But it's also more internal storage so why not?

I was also recently playing Guild Wars 2 on it which is a bit janky since it doesn't have proper controller support - but it works and is definitely playable using a community control scheme, despite being listed as completely incompatible on its Steam page. I like how strict Valve is being with that

No half life 2 is a 360 game and was never ported to linux
native run. Valve quite literally used source engine as the 1st testing mice for proton. Hell dota2 is perfectly playable on the deck in case you want to piss off 9 other people

1. very likely wont arrive, either stolen by fedex or taken off your doorstep.
2. deck will have dead pixels, IPS backlight bleed, sticky buttons, fan that rattles, suboptimal battery health, case shell parting, and joystick drift. you will RMA it and valve will give you a refurbished unit (aka another defective unit that they are hoping you won't realize is defective). you will RMA this one and this cycle will continue for a few months before you decide to try to repair the deck yourself.
3. you open the deck up and immediately thread all 8 screws since they are made out of clay. your sd card snaps in half when you open the back panel because you forgot to remove it. you peel back the aluminum tape to open the battery shield so that you can properly replace components that you have purchased from ifixit at exorbitant prices -- the warranty on your deck is now voided. you go to unplug the battery cable but realize it is made out of paper and it snaps in half.
4. no longer functional, you pay to send it off to an ifxit repair center. you are now charged an even more exorbitant fee and spend weeks waiting for your 'repaired' refurbished (broken) deck to arrive.
5. it is now may 2023 and tears of the kingdom has released on the nintendo switch 2. you have spent over $2,000 in the span up to its release and no longer have the funds necessary to purchase and enjoy the greatest game of the next 10 years.

My current PC is about 11 years old and finally dying on me. I dont really want to spend the 1,5k to replace it. Could the Deck work as a substitute? I want to play some dungeon crawlers and maybe rpgs like Kingmaker.
It could, but if you're not taking any advantage of the portability then you might find better value making your own budget PC. The deck makes sacrifices to be a portable device. You can check game compatibility on protondb.com which usually has people listing any workarounds they needed to use
