Its worse than the dodonpachi games when it comes to gameplay even though I love the setting way more
Its just so slow for the first 2 stages and has so many mid sized enemies with a lot of HP

          >has so many mid sized enemies with a lot of HP
Did you make sure to shoot them with your splatter shot first before your regular shot? You can reach max power easily in those first two stages if you play your cards right.

Yeah I know to do that, the stages are still filled with chunky bois, DDP DOJ just feels so much faster. I own both on switch and I have double the hours on DOJ even though I have owned ESP for much longer, I just find it more fun to play.
ESP is still great in its own way though. But I can only 3cc it with yusuke while being one of the easiest cave games so Im not a great player or anything.

I'd recommend Espgaluda. I'd vouch for the first one more. That may be nostalgia talking, it's the game that got me into bullet-hells and is still my favorite shmup. There's something about the 2nd that just didn't click with me as much, probably the soundtrack and boss fight patterns, but it's still a good game. There are certain routes that are more "optimal" but it overall has a lot more free-form of a scoring system than any other Cave game.

                >kill enemies for green gems
                >be closer to enemies to get more gems, sort of like point-blanking in Ketsui (this is only in the 2nd game)
                >enter Kakusei ("awaken") mode to slow the bullets
                >this drains out your green gems; the gems basically fuel it
                >killing enemies in kakusei mode cancels all their bullets into gold multiplier ingots
                >exit kakusei mode before your gems tick out or everything gets fast
                >go back to killing enemies for green gems and repeat

1 is simpler and easier so it's better to learn
you basically just alternate between slow mo mode and normal based on how much meter you have

Been playing shmups since I was a kid with R-Type and Space Invaders for Game Boy. Got into bullet-hells in 2004, and that's still my favorite genre. Frick 2hu LARPers, though. Also

Really? The attacks on stage 6 boss can be very challenging. For me 7 was the easiest cause of Sakuya's hoaming and the shield mechanic.
I love IN, it has so much content.

i could never get into fighting games
i like shmups but ive played very little. it's hard to figure out what to play next. ive played:
    >gg aleste 3
    >ddpdoj
    >crimzon clover
    what next?
beat em ups... similar problem to shmups. ive really only played streets of rage 4 and ninja warriors once again. dont know where to go next.

Try the Devil Blade game that just came out, it's flashy like Crimzon Cucklover

When I was in your shoes i just explored different types of shmups and settled on things that looked cool. Darius Gaiden and G Darius are on steam and both are fantastic with cool bosses. Similarly the RayForce collection has three cool games on it, depending on if you like mechanical fish boss fights (Darius) or hard bleak Sci fi design (Ray series).

If you find you aren't as in to bullet hell there are lots of options like Raiden 3 4 and 5 on steam, or the Cotton games that made it to steam too.

Try again, maybe you're like me and when you pick up a hard game after a while you're much better at it and you can beat what you couldn't before. The moment I learned to 1cc SA on normal it became pretty consistan, I've been able to clear it with all the weapons.
