I didn't beat DOOM 1 or DOOM 2 and jumped into and beat Plutonia, and then Sunlust.
I'll be honest I didn't get the appreciation of either of them even after the fact I UV-Maxed Sunlust, though I did acquire a love for DOOM 1 once I realized you can beat two of the chapters just by punching things to death, and that's fricking cool. So you really don't need them now unless you want to get a feel for some controls.

He's not totally wrong. Most levels have a shotgun or a shotgun guy near where you spawn for that reason, and most levels start in a fairly quiet room to give you a moment to get your bearings, especially if you just start with the shitty pistol.

                Anonymous

Dude the game is meant to be played with loadout transfers and quicksaves. If it wasn't they wouldn't be in the final product. You can't even do pistol-starts without intentionally killing yourself in the original game, and in most sourceports its only offered as a special command-line argument for autismos. Everything you've mentioned only exist in case you die and you haven't saved in a while, so the level is still beatable with only a pistol.

                Anonymous

Yeah, that's why I said he's not totally wrong: Most maps are made in mind in the off chance you frick up and lose your gear.
Sometimes inventory wipes are good, cus the alternative is sitting on fat stacks of ammo and never having to actually try in fights because you just have like 70 rockets and 300+ cells.

                Anonymous

But Romero heads already exist for that purpose. If the mapmaker wants you to have a fresh inventory, they can very easily just kill you at the end of the level.

                >Everything you've mentioned only exist in case of something that should occur somewhat in a videogame meant for adults and aren't trying to cheese with saves
Really the only thing this is proving is that DOOM 1, and especially DOOM 2, have some flaws in their initial releases.

Is this your new goalpost? If it was a design flaw they would've fixed it in Doom 2. Or at the very least, they would've given you an option to pistol-start the game without having to suicide yourself. Loadout transfers and saving have always been part of the game, and your revisionist history is moronic. Being able to transfer your loadout is a reward for not dying. Even your health is transferred, so unless you've been actively searching for secrets like megaspheres and supercharges, there's a non-zero chance that you will die just from sheer attrition. The point is to see how long you can last so that you can play it like a 1CC game.
                >BUT THAT TRIVIALIZES MUH HECKING ADULT GAME
Who said Doom was meant to be hard? Is this also part of your revisionist framing?

Yes Doom 2 is flawed and borderline broken because of how unbalanced it is.

                >The maps in Doom and Doom II were typically created so that the player could finish them from scratch. When Sandy Petersen was asked about the things he found disappointing in Doom, he said he felt the episodes were too easy because id designers did not properly take account the player's ability to carry ordnance from earlier levels. The gameplay testing was based mainly on pistol starts, separately for each level. According to Sandy Petersen, "Most people started levels with some kind of significant equipment. However, almost all our playtesting was done starting each level with just a pistol. We made the game too easy for the average player.

Ive been playing doom since it my first time playing on the SNES when it came out. Used to play the PC version after school in high school with God mode, ultra violence, with infinite ammo and all guns. So ive played this game for 20 yrs or so and my 1st time playing wads was on the Ps4 rerelease. Not very tech savvy, i dont mess with shaders, retroarch is complicated, etc. The wads provided are neat, brings life to the game if you’ve played it tirelessly like i have. So yes, play the originals.

If you haven't done 100% UV pistol start runs of every map in The Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II, The Master Levels, TNT Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Wicked, and Sigil I & II IN ADDITION TO full playthroughs of Heretic & Hexen (plus their respective expansions) and Strife...

...Then you will never be a true fan of these games and you will always be a secondary.

Doom 2 is not very good, but I would still play it. I would say its average. The levels are not very memorable, in particular the beginning of the game.

They're excellent games but not required playing to understand other wads. You should simply play them because they are good.
