Oh shit how did I miss that? And its also on sale right now? its XCOM time again baby!
To answer your question I would play it in order, adds alot to the experience plus enemy unknown not only still holds up but can arguably be considered better or on par with XCOM 2

who the frick posts like this?

Start with chimera. If you like it, then play the other two

Chimera is typically hailed as the best in the series. I’d say start there as 1 is a real slog to get through and 2 is only truly enjoyable if you’ve played chimera

Get XCOM Chimera Squad, hopefully there is a humble bundle

my god is it a good ass game
Like, if you enjoy PC Kino there is literally no reason not to try it out

It maintains the series tried and true combat, with a few distinctions. You start every encounter off with a "breach," which sees your team of 4 kicking down some doors and getting some preliminary shots on the opposition. There are also some abilities that are unique to the breach phase that can be more defensive or overall strategic than just "do some damage," but it's still a really exciting way to start off an encounter.

combat mission btfo xcom 1 because its handled through bite-sized encounters, meaning each mission is like 10-15 minutes long, and pure action. Even compare it to XCOM 2, which could have 10- 15 minutes of tensely hunting out the objectives, it feels like a much brisker pace, which I actually enjoy more.

Another thing lowering the tension, and something that die-hard XCOM fans might see as a negative, is that you're characters will never permanently die. Each member of Chimera Squad is an actual character, with a personality and unique class. I personally love it, because it lets you kinda be more aggressive in each battle, knowing that your favorite character isn't going to die. But I could see that being a negative to some.

Other than that, though, it is still the XCOM shit you know and love. Never trust a 95% hit chance from 2 feet away, always expect shit to go sideways. It is addicting, tense and relaxing all at once.

The characters, though, are frickin awesome. You get to control both human and aliens, and they are OP af by design. You get good shit right out of the gate instead of the first two which made you wait till halfway through the game. Like the sectoid or the viper which isn’t annoying like in XCOM 2,

Either way, if you like deus ex mixed with final fantasy plus half life you’ll love chimera and just xcom in gemeral too.

oh. it's a shill, for some reason.

Why would somebody shill an xcom game of all things. You autismos hate trying new things but chimera squad is innovative and knocks off the tedium the first two have

Nobody thinks chimera squad is an improvement over the other two, the only thing anyone even had to say about it positively was "snek sexy". I wish all you disingenuous shills had one neck so I could choke it.

I liked 1 more than 2 anyways, they tried to build 2 around pushing players outside of their comfort zone from 1 but the methods they used to do it sometimes feel really forced

      Anonymous

It’s because the methods used ARE forced. The Meld resource in the xpac for XCOM1 was them dipping a toe to see if players could be nudged out of their over defensive play style, but you can get plenty of meld and still not play any more aggressively then you otherwise would.

XCOM2 decided to double down on timers for damn near everything and it forces you arbitrarily into bad spots where you can lose units and gear that isn’t exactly easy to replace.

Dude xenonauts is the undisputed king of tedium
Hardly any maps, slow animations, gutted mechanics, sterile and bland artstyle, a linear story with tactical decisions cut and a piss poor finale
It's only notable thing it did well is the lore and research topics which are fricking top tier
But just play an OG OXCE mod like XCom Files which literally has the entire Xenonauts game modded in if you love research topic lore shit, it has tons of that
Stay the frick away from Xenonauts unless you're absolutely desperate

Start with vanilla X-com 2012, then play it again With Enemy Within, then play vanilla X-com 2. Skip War of the Chosen and Chimaera Squad.

    Order:
    XCOM:EW
    Xcom2 vanilla
    Chimera squad(optional)

Then go play the actual real xcom experience xcom long war mod. Also i will heavily shill xcom rebalanced to anyone who has already played LW1 also, but stick to lw first

XCOM Lw2 if you are desperate for more but i wouldn't rate it as highly as LW1 or LWRebalanced

  15. 1 year ago

I would start with Xcom 1 with expac. Ignore any human being that says to touch long war. Long war is for people that are desperate for a more "hardcore" version of the base games after they already really understand the base games.

Then xcom 2 with expac is a straight upgrade in most ways. The only "downside" the sequel is the maps are procedurally generated unlike the first game, so they dont have as much character or as tight a design, which is both good and bad.

      Anonymous

I wouldn't call xcom 2 expansion a straight upgrade. It makes the already questionable balance full of new cheese options and exaggerates the reverse difficulty curve with a bunch of OP mid/lategame stuff. Also there is the absolutely horrendous marvel tier writing. I personaly think a modded base xcom2 can make for a better experience than WOTC shit. But then again i'm a long war autist so i probably just have different taste

        Anonymous

I mean, saying its not an upgrade to a heavily modded base version is pretty silly.

          Anonymous

True, i guess the point i was trying to make is i personally didn't like most of the design choices of WOTC and felt the changes pushed it further away from the type of game i wanted. I'd probably still rate the overall vanilla xcom2 experience over WOTC even without mods even though WOTC does add new content.

I think it adds more emotional weight to when they die after spending so much time customizing and sending them on missions. The amount of customization they did at launch and even with the dlc is awesome, even the photobooth is stupidly cool. I hope XCOM 3 will have a workshop.

Same with the edgy chosen from WOTC. i loved the mysterious and kinda unnerving tone from XCOM EW where you were up against some real unkown threat. WOTC is basically like the edgy ninja from ME3 and chimera squad somehow has these genetically modified hulking meat monsters and psionic AYYs act like generic slightly onions milliners

Reminder that XCOM 2 came out 7 years ago, and Chimera Squad was an abortion. Are they even going to make more games in this series?

  20. 1 year ago

Honestly, if you never played Xcom before start with Enemy Unknown. You get a lot more room with strategy and positioning.

The biggest difference with Xcom 2 is that there is a turn limit in each mission so your always forced to rush the objective no matter what and the challenge comes from how to bum rush the objective and get out with minimal casualties.

      Anonymous

You rarely have to "rush" the objective. Very, very rarely. You just can't overwatch creep up three tiles a turn. EW added a similar mechanic with it costing you all the upgrade goo if you were going slowly.
