you are. the only remotely difficult team boss "fight" is the flag battle against Rapid 99 because you have no idea where you're going the first time. Tag battles are so easy I literally just end up fricking around and outright kill them with dashes.

I've only played the first one and I was slightly disappointed. Movement felt sluggish, if you miss a jump on the roofs you might have to slowly make your way back up, having to collect the cans slowed things even further. Overall I preferred all the "superficial" stuff like art, music and general 2000's attitude rather than actual gameplay.

Hover was the absolute definition of a disappointment, but I wouldn't agree with saying it's outright bad. I'd say that the first-person free running on the actual courses was a great example of FPP platforming, it just completely lacked a proper structure for you to enjoy it anywhere else. Not to mention that, to my memory, they pimped Naganuma but you could only hear his music at the bars.

Slap happy rhythm busters is also pretty cool, kind of basic fighting game but the music is very nice (a bit less "funky" more fast paced) and it actually mixes fighting with rhythm gameplay. There's also bust a groove 1&2, if you haven't checked it ou yet it's a rhythm game with a pretty similar vibe. Also lethal league like anon said

The graphical rendering is called cel-shading or cel-shading emulation, the actual art direction has sort of retroactively been called "Y2K aesthetics", that bold CG-heavy graphic design around that time.

Not a lot of games that do both. Ollie King, Go! Go! Hypergrind, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters.
Maybe Guitaroo Man if you're willing to get up the cel-shading, few others.

The anime only covers the first 12 volumes which is heavily focused only on skating and teams competing against each other. It’s very simple until volume 13 when the manga starts jumping ship and gets extremely complicated and more sci-fi as the manga goes on.

I only read the manga. It was amazing for the first half and had a ton of bombastic 2000s energy, great humor, super colorful characters, good action, and an incredible atmosphere. Unfortunately, it started slowly falling off later because Ito started needlessly complicating the plot and turning the story into a Metal Gear Solid rip-off without any aspects that made the writing and stories in MGS games good. Ito is an absolutely amazing artist and he definitely had the potential to be also a good writer but unfortunately, he suffers from a weird syndrome where his stories start up great but they get worse and worse later.

Their, actually, Cibo Matto is a duo. They only had three albums, Viva! La Woman was their first and is the one Birthday Cake is from. Stereotype A was their followup and is fricking great, personal favorites on it are Lint of Love, Spoon, and Moonchild (not the autotuned remix). The had a third album titled Hotel Valentine a few years ago that was really good too, I really like Deja Vu and 10th Floor Ghost Girl. They also were part of a side project with members of other bands called Butter 08 which is also really good. Both of them also have a bunch of solo work I'm not familiar with, and Miho Hatori (the vocalist) was Noodle in Gorillaz at some point.

      Anonymous

i much prefer the first game's visuals (fricking hate the muted color palettes in jsrf) and the way they handle the police but that's it really. coming to a full stop to spray graffiti sucks, tricks being done automatically sucks, levels have too many spots where you get to the end of a rail and there's nothing in the immediate area to grind on, time limits suck, far less to do, levels are smaller, most of the best tracks in the series come from jsrf.
jsrf is an improvement in almost every conceivable way.

      Anonymous

Agreed. What stood out the most to me is how grind tricks essentially removed momentum's relevance from grinding entirely. Now instead of building momentum before you grind or jumping over inclines to preserve it, you just tap trick button with consistent timing and never lose speed. Also I could be wrong but it feels like you literally gain speed for trick jumping off rails in JSR as opposed to losing it in Future, which is lame.
I like the level design in JSR much more too. And the open world in Future is cool but the arcadey mission system in the first game makes for much better pacing and going for jet rankings is fun.

That was a good change though. Half the time it's not even worth grinding in JSR to begin with because if you're not at max speed you won't get faster and if you move up on an incline you'll just slide back down. JSRF does the opposite; getting onto rails is how you get yourself moving quickly and making it easier to maintain momentum is an obvious choice for a game with much bigger levels.

We like MGS because the story is batshit nonsense written by a moronic high schooler that just realised the world is corrupt, not because its actually good

          >We
What "we"? (You) don't represent the majority you moron. (You) don't represent shit. The vast majority of people love Metal Gear games and the story because it had great writing that explored multiple different themes about human nature, the world, and life while also having incredibly emotional human moments and fantastic characters that people remember to this day.

I really like the gameplay in jsr, but I think the stage design itself is rather weak. Instead of making the drastic changes in future, I'd prefer if a sequel had better designed maps to go better with the gameplay of the first game.

Is someone gonna port the original JSR levels over to JSRF now that we have a level creator?
