Not true. >you might as well not have one

Some guns fire subsonic without switching ammo.
There's still a very noticeable noise reduction if you're using regular supersonics, often by 13 or so decibels, and a gun's muzzle flash signature is drastically reduced which is highly beneficial in the dark.
Subsonics are still neato out to 150ish yards, depending what caliber you are using. 220 grain .300 AAC's are complete sex out of a 10.5" barrel.
>ammo has short range
so it does reduce damage
On an unarmored person, a projectile moving at 1050 FPS is going to fuck your day up regardless. The usage of "damage" in place of terminal ballistics just butters my biscuits.
You might think it sucks, but no matter which way a game dev cuts it, the end result you as a player will see will get abstracted to "damage". Even if a dev tries to calculate bullet speed, bullet size, and different armor classes - you as a player will have that filtered and strained down into a form of "damage go up or down" because even if you're playing a Mil Sim style game, how the FUCK are you, even as an advanced player, supposed to translate what kind of actual impact your bullet velocity going up actually has? Can it now penetrate a class 2 armor where it could only pen 1 prior? That's why as much as it sucks, you're gonna have to get used to that condensed statistical output. Just hope and pray good devs put a lot of underlying thought into what goes into that filtered result.

You're not wrong in any capacity and for any AAA developer team, they would absolutely simplify terminal ballistics into some type of hitscan damage value because why bother with such a complicated system that delves into almost worthless minutiae when that money and time could be dedicated to a bloated, cringey marketing campaign. all in all theres probably quite literally no reason why a suppressor should lower the damage other than game balance for having a quieter weapon and needing and having the time to line up headshots to compensate. i dont even know if subsonic rounds travel noticeable shorter distances because it wouldnt really matter in a videogame if youre not setting a C96 to 1000m or some other batshit situation

Unrelated but I built this suppressor and it's so quiet you could pop off a magazine in your backyard and people inside your house would have zero idea. It's about the same noise as hitting a small twig against a tree.
no, nobody uses silencers in this setting because it's nowhere near as effective as people think
you'd still hear a bang from a silenced weapon two rooms away
A 20-30 decibel reduction is still a big deal. In a loud environment it becomes that much harder to pin-point your location, especially if their gunshots are louder than yours. Besides that it makes it 10x easier to communicate on the firing line when you're shouting over gunfire.
There is drawback, but you cant simmulate weapon weight difference, harder handling due to barrel being longer and balance point being closer to the front of the weapon. Otherwise you get longer barrel, so the bullet flies faster out of it, you have muzzled flash and silenced sound, although not to the absurd level of videogames(at leas with supersonic bullets that is). Weapons that are designed to have silencer by default, like vss, don't have mentioned drawbacks. In fact while switching to xm7/xm250, US army tries to make suppressed rifles a standard, to prevent ear damage.
There should be inertia to moving your sights around though people would complain same as when games have intertial movement. Increase reloading and weapon switching times. You should also be prevented from aiming when you're too close to walls, shorter pistols would allow for closer distances.
>US army tries to make suppressed rifles a standard, to prevent ear damage
It's crazy that it's only happening now if you have any idea how prevalent hearing damage is and how much the VA has to pay out for it.
To be fair, the military does issue ear protection. My understanding is there's currently a lawsuit over the effectiveness of that ear protection. Not against the military but against the manufacturer 3M.
Well for the longest time it was just ear plugs. I've seen this talked about dozens of times over the years and soldiers almost always say that the loss of situational awareness is too big an immediate risk and they opt to keep their ears open when it matters. The military knew this and still put no effort into hearing protection for regular soldiers. Only the elite got the multi-purpose ear muffs.

Makes me wonder just how loud the opening days of the Somme must've been when all that went down. Hearing protection wasn't even a concept at the time when artillery was being thrown around like candy.

It was actually, but barely. The maxim suppressor was invented before WWI and ear plugs made of various materials weren't unheard of. Of course it was the furthest thing from standard issue. People didn't really understand hearing damage back then, only that the boys in artillery tended to be hard of hearing. When it came to war the culture was one of not being pussy and a willingness to face danger in a disciplined manner. You accepted the hardships. Communication during combat was also mostly shouting. It would take men a while to notice they lost the ability to understand whispers and quiet conversation and it wasn't coming back.
Even today it's called the silent epidemic in the military because it affects so many but it's talked about so little.

Stonewall Jackson famously had severe hearing loss.
lets say "damage" is equal to amount of energy the target gets hit with.
The equation looks a bit like: mass * velocity
If you increase the mass, you can reduce the velocity and keep the "damage" the same. You might change other factors like range but slower bullet does not mean less damage. Basically all guns that are designed to for supresser use, are chambered for fatter slower moving bullets to compensate.
>If you increase the mass, you can reduce the velocity and keep the "damage" the same. You might change other factors like range but slower bullet does not mean less damage. Basically all guns that are designed to for supresser use, are chambered for fatter slower moving bullets to compensate.
velocity is actually one of the biggest factors that determine permanent cavitation. Compare a 5.56 rifle round to a 10mm pistol round. The a typical 10mm round is heavier and is of a larger caliber than 5.56 but it does way less damage simply because it typically goes at half the velocity of a 5.56 round.
weapons designed around using a suppressor might use heavier and larger calibers but it is mostly a band aid solution when subsonic ammo is a must.
alright wiseguy, when those baffles are filling up with compressed air, and the bullet pushes past that compressed air instead of pushing past uncompressed air, how does it defy the laws of physics to not lose any more energy? it's displacing more mass
The force that pushes the bullet out pushes the gas out in front of it and the silencer makes it quiet, dummy. if it happened before the bullet left then it would be a loud sound but the silencer makes it quiet so the bullet can leave without a sound.
The bullet is pushing the air in front of it already in the barrel, the bullet pushes that air out of the barrel as it passes through in which the baffles in the silencer could cause a good amount of back pressure/resistance since its being compressed against the baffles by the traveling bullet. However I doubt it makes that much of a difference.
Yeah having to push through a constrained environment is exactly why people use handguns for distant targets and long barrelled rifles for close up shooting.
I'm of the impression that the player character, especially if they're military, have those earplugs that can dampen higher decibel noises without muting lower volume stuff.
A believable excuse to not having the game blow your speakers out.
A suppressor is only effective with sub-sonic ammunition. If you want to actually reduce the noise of the weapon, you are sacrificing stopping power for stealth.
Rifle = More damage
Rifle = More barrel
Pistol = Less damage
Pistol = Less barrel
Silencer = More Barrel
Silencer + Pistol = More barrel
Silencer + Pistol = More damage.

>Suppressors/silencers reduce decibel report by about 30 decibels (extremely useful indoors or at the range)
The sound reduction of 30 decibels is only achievable on handguns and SMGs. 7.62 is not getting that, it's not obfuscating shit. So you need to swap out for sub-sonic, which is indeed going to lower "damage" within this context.
If you're getting shot at and you can't figure out where you are getting shot at from, the suppressor has done its job. "movie magic" sound levels are completely unnecessary.
Nearly all 5.56 cans are rated for 30 decibels or higher, mine is 34db and it's not even a good can
7.62 cans reduce sound even more due to the logarithmic nature of decibel counts and suppressing a 7.62x51 rifle supersonic is completely ideal for someone in the woods shooting at a target without giving away their position
You are simply wrong, you don't own guns, you don't own suppressors, shut the fuck up
Technically silenced weapons do less damage. To make a silencer effective you need to use subsonic ammo, which obviously is slower than regular ammo, therefore has less range and power.
That doesnt change the fact that lindy is a deranged moron
He's a nogunz British retard.
Though you can't measure something like "damage" on a real world scale.
Getting shot with a supersonic or subsonic round won't matter as much as where you got shot with said round. People die to .22 all the time. And the only time bullet velocity ever becomes an important factor is when the target is armored or behind cover.
Or far enough. Subsonic .22 past 50 yards basically just scrapes you. Keep in mind that you always consider the target as a fully clothed man, and most likely getting shot in the densest parts like the leg or the shoulder. Silenced weapons are generally designed to incapacitate a threat at very close range in order for the soldier/spy to take his own better weapons, or to just get rid of one or two guards. Honestly i believe for what it's worth a good sturdy knife would do just fine, and it's far quieter than a silenced weapon
>Adds a fucking lot of overall length which tends to be counter-intuitive to the point of a handgun
I think the only FPS I've played that simulated barrel length was Rising Storm 2. If you got too close to a wall, you would point your gun down, unable to shoot. It actually made pistols and smgs pretty useful in tunnels and cramped buildings.
rising storm 2 is the most underrated FPS game ever, amazing and realistic gun handling and really fun overall gameplay
One of the few games where shotguns actually work like they do IRL as well
Shame it's dead and the new game is in dev hell
if you use supersonic ammo the bullet has a sonic boom which is loud as fuck which defeats the point, meaning you have to use ammo that moves slower than the speed of sound for max effectiveness. However, some cartridges like .45 ACP are already subsonic so they shouldn't be affected.
Look man, I know this tool can be used for nefarious reasons, but I'd like to practice my plinking without annoying neighbors. The range is quite a distance from me and men in this area are not trust enough to let folk on their property to practice without some sort of relationship. I understand why it's banned but I don't like being pigeon holed like this.
that's the issue I have. I know how these guys operate. Give them enough information and they will fuck with you eventually. I just want to practice, it cannot get any more simple than that.
I can never see this retard's face without remembering him making a video seething over flails because he held it up like this instead of letting the big heavy metal ball hang so that his arm doesn't get tired.
What a fucking moron.
Just ducktape a bit of rubber to the front of your gun's barrel. The Welrod works on the same principle, only the piece of rubber looks more sophisticated.
>one of the few games (and probably the first one) wherein the Silencer isn't infnite-use >It's time-limited upon activation instead of degrading with each shot fired - and somehow works with *EVERYTHING* (even the rocket & grenade launchers and the BFG)
balance a game? how shocking? are you joking? Are you saying you don't understand that devs have to make sure the experience is balanced and enjoyable?
Nogunz, if you need to use subsonics for a suppressor to be most effective why not use them on something like a UMP in .45 or other big fat but slow moving bullet chambered gun? Like wouldn't one of those obnoxious looking shotguns with a massive can on one end shooting low velocity but big as fuck slugs be both quiet and hit like a truck?
I feel like I rarely see .45 used at all anymore, is it just relegated to boomer ammo?
Also obviously that hypothetical shotgun would have shit effective range compared to something like blackout so that's probably why
Handgun was about $800 but it's about $600 now. $750 for the can, $200 for the tax stamp, a few hundred more for NFA transfer fee and LGS fees, about $50 for the trigger, $300 for the red dot.

>People didn't really understand hearing damage back then
WHAAAT?
SPEAK UP!
WHAT'D YOU SAY?
WATER IN MAY?
>Hearing protection wasn't even a concept at the time
Covering your ears with your hands around loud sounds is a natural instinct.
Stonewall Jackson famously had severe hearing loss.
You're supposed to use subsonic ammo with silencers so yeah less damage.
lets say "damage" is equal to amount of energy the target gets hit with.
This but velocity is raised to the second power, making it really important up to a point.
CUTE
But Ganker told me old women aren't cute?
uhhh source please??
I hope she has a license for that
luv Sue, simple as
IMAGINE THE SWORDFIGHTS
>silencer has limited uses
depends on the type m8
Silencers reduce the noise meaning they make the bullet go slower meaning it does less damage, obviously.
Suppressors don't reduce velocity.
alright wiseguy, when those baffles are filling up with compressed air, and the bullet pushes past that compressed air instead of pushing past uncompressed air, how does it defy the laws of physics to not lose any more energy? it's displacing more mass
in what reality does the gas from a bullet appear in front of a bullet, retard
The force that pushes the bullet out pushes the gas out in front of it and the silencer makes it quiet, dummy. if it happened before the bullet left then it would be a loud sound but the silencer makes it quiet so the bullet can leave without a sound.
what the fuck are you on about
that is not at all how suppressors work
No it's like ass cheeks and a fart but the bullet is a bit of poo.
The bullet is pushing the air in front of it already in the barrel, the bullet pushes that air out of the barrel as it passes through in which the baffles in the silencer could cause a good amount of back pressure/resistance since its being compressed against the baffles by the traveling bullet. However I doubt it makes that much of a difference.
barrels increase the range of the bullet. that is why people use long guns instead of hand guns
Yeah having to push through a constrained environment is exactly why people use handguns for distant targets and long barrelled rifles for close up shooting.
Retard.
>silencer
>ice arrows
to be fair, metal is sharper when it's cold
should've used a .45
Yes.
>game has silencers
>they make it so guns just let out soft little farts because Hollywood made everyone think so
To be fair in the same game the noise of the same unsuppressed weapon isn't deafening either
I'm of the impression that the player character, especially if they're military, have those earplugs that can dampen higher decibel noises without muting lower volume stuff.
A believable excuse to not having the game blow your speakers out.
>real life guns
*YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN*
Estrogen-filled gay
>noguns itt think all guns fire supersonic bullets
A suppressor is only effective with sub-sonic ammunition. If you want to actually reduce the noise of the weapon, you are sacrificing stopping power for stealth.
Not if you're using bullets that are already subsonic.
ruger 22 is my favorite gun and I enjoyed using it in fallout new vegas. I just think it's neat.
>silencer reduces range
wait lindy and modernhistory linked up?
Rifle = More damage
Rifle = More barrel
Pistol = Less damage
Pistol = Less barrel
Silencer = More Barrel
Silencer + Pistol = More barrel
Silencer + Pistol = More damage.
The math is there, people.
A silencer isn't more barrel
Then it's less damage.
What is free bore boost.
>CoDslop
>noguns cant think of anything else when someone else is right but to scream buzzwords
Educate yourself on how firearms work dumbass
I never said you were wrong but
>CoDslop
c'mon anon it's the most disappointing game in the franchise and you're really going to proudly display your sigger next to that
If you're so quick to identify that screenshot as Call of Duty, I gotta wonder how you even know. I haven't touched a COD game since 2012, and that screenshot looks nothing like any COD game I've ever played. I thought it was some Rainbow 6 bullshit. Are you guys closeted codfags?
CoD is actually pretty good since MW19 if we ignore Vanguard.
>Suppressors/silencers reduce decibel report by about 30 decibels (extremely useful indoors or at the range)
The sound reduction of 30 decibels is only achievable on handguns and SMGs. 7.62 is not getting that, it's not obfuscating shit. So you need to swap out for sub-sonic, which is indeed going to lower "damage" within this context.
>it's not obfuscating shit.
Yes it is. You will still be able to hear the gunshot, but it's origin is almost impossible to pinpoint.
But you still know there's gunfire. If you want movie magic seemingly inaudible gunfire, which is achievable, you need to shoot small.
You are simply wrong, you don't own guns, you don't own suppressors, shut the fuck up
>The sound reduction of 30 decibels is only achievable on handguns and SMGs
Wrong.
silencer very incel
Cod bro that can't string together a single coherent sentence. Figures
>Laughs in .45
Kaz, I'm already subsonic.
THE MEAT TARGET
orange lung tissue
>therefore has less range and power
Power isn't about just speed, the weight of the projectile + its speed is what determines how hard it hits
Go back, Ganker
Silencers should increase reload time
Why
makes it heavier, game balance reasons, etc
or slower weapon switch speed
The increased reload time would be interesting if they also changed the animation.
Why do people that never shot a gun irl feel the need to shit out their opinions when it comes to guns?
It's not unique to guns. People always have opinions on things they are completely ignorant about.
Are you not allowed to critique food if you've never cooked? Doesn't compute dude.
>Are you not allowed to critique food if you've never cooked?
No you're not, beyond "I (don't) personally like it"
Ironic, how many games do you critique without playing them, Gankertard?
>Adds a fucking lot of overall length which tends to be counter-intuitive to the point of a handgun
I think the only FPS I've played that simulated barrel length was Rising Storm 2. If you got too close to a wall, you would point your gun down, unable to shoot. It actually made pistols and smgs pretty useful in tunnels and cramped buildings.
try Ground Branch and Ready Or Not
rising storm 2 is the most underrated FPS game ever, amazing and realistic gun handling and really fun overall gameplay
One of the few games where shotguns actually work like they do IRL as well
Shame it's dead and the new game is in dev hell
Silencers are hot and better because you can deepthroat more of the gun together with me.
>Silencer
I wish SD or Sound Dampener was the nomenclature.
Silencer just draws in fucking retards.
>game glorifies n*poleon
>adding a suppressor makes your gun less threatening
Here's your suppressor, bro.
What's the problem with it?
It's pretty good.
Oh
ohhh...
OH NO!
It's cut in half.
It's Finnish.
That's an onahole.
If you’re brave enough
Subsonic cartridges, retard
*noise suppressor
Isn't it because of the type of bullet you need to be able to use the silencer that you can't shoot it with as much kinetic force or some shit?
That's the one I was talking about:
if you use supersonic ammo the bullet has a sonic boom which is loud as fuck which defeats the point, meaning you have to use ammo that moves slower than the speed of sound for max effectiveness. However, some cartridges like .45 ACP are already subsonic so they shouldn't be affected.
For me, it’s the AMT Hardballer.
A silencer is just a muffler, I think the meme of it doing less damage is that youre suppose to be using sub sonic munitions for max sneaky.
Look man, I know this tool can be used for nefarious reasons, but I'd like to practice my plinking without annoying neighbors. The range is quite a distance from me and men in this area are not trust enough to let folk on their property to practice without some sort of relationship. I understand why it's banned but I don't like being pigeon holed like this.
it's only banned in gay countries like the ussa
It's not banned, you just need to give the ATF their pound of flesh. Not ideal by any means but it's definitely not illegal.
that's the issue I have. I know how these guys operate. Give them enough information and they will fuck with you eventually. I just want to practice, it cannot get any more simple than that.
In the few non-cucked parts of bongland where gun ownership is semi-common it's actually seen as bad manners to not use a suppressor when hunting.
I can never see this retard's face without remembering him making a video seething over flails because he held it up like this instead of letting the big heavy metal ball hang so that his arm doesn't get tired.
What a fucking moron.
I think he was just trying to display the weapon in-frame, in a pointed way. But yeah, kind of retarded.
OK
>make the silencer out of magnetic metal of one polarity
>make bullets of opposite pole
>gun fires more powerfully while being silenced
Refute this Americans. You can't.
why would we?
Fuck silencers
Loudeners when?
how can I buy a silenced gun in a 3rd shithole country?
the same place where you buy your pants
you can buy a pillow anywhere
I heard taping a plastic bottle in front of the barrel works just as well, so 7/11 is where you can buy a silencer
No, a plastic bottle doesnt work
But a oil filter does, and it doesnt last long
Just ducktape a bit of rubber to the front of your gun's barrel. The Welrod works on the same principle, only the piece of rubber looks more sophisticated.
Attach a car muffler to your gun. It's basically the same thing.
Just steal one
From whom?
if it didn't there would be no downside in vidya.
except you lose out on other muzzle devices, like a compensator or flash hider
which also have bonuses and weaknesses. besides, most games that include silencer have stealth which makes the silencer even more powerful.
>one of the few games (and probably the first one) wherein the Silencer isn't infnite-use
>It's time-limited upon activation instead of degrading with each shot fired - and somehow works with *EVERYTHING* (even the rocket & grenade launchers and the BFG)
actually true for the MP5-SD, which is able to reduce the velocity of standard ammo to subsonic levels
balance a game? how shocking? are you joking? Are you saying you don't understand that devs have to make sure the experience is balanced and enjoyable?
>silencer
Already enough
Aren't you supposed to use subsonic ammo for silencer to work properly?
this anon is correct
lot of seething noguns in this thread
Nogunz, if you need to use subsonics for a suppressor to be most effective why not use them on something like a UMP in .45 or other big fat but slow moving bullet chambered gun? Like wouldn't one of those obnoxious looking shotguns with a massive can on one end shooting low velocity but big as fuck slugs be both quiet and hit like a truck?
I feel like I rarely see .45 used at all anymore, is it just relegated to boomer ammo?
Also obviously that hypothetical shotgun would have shit effective range compared to something like blackout so that's probably why
>calls people noguns
>uses the term "silencer"
lol, lmao even
imagine being such a noguns fag that doesn't know that silencer is also an accepted term because that's what the original creator called it
ok retard
Uh oh big retardie wardie made a boo boo. Are you gonna cry? Shit or piss? Cum perchance?
Anon gets shut down, reveals he's butt blasted. Many such cases.
>game revolves around a conflict between the americans and the soviets
>the soviets are depicted as the bad guys
>have to ply as an american soldiers trying to prevent his homeland from getting nuked
>lowkey want your mc to fail
did he actually have a vid called "forgetting the holocauster"? lol
yes and it's uber gay, typical anglo
Goddamn that's a really cool looking gun.
How much for the whole thing and how practical would it be to keep one around in order to murder the demons that haunt my dreams?
Handgun was about $800 but it's about $600 now. $750 for the can, $200 for the tax stamp, a few hundred more for NFA transfer fee and LGS fees, about $50 for the trigger, $300 for the red dot.
The original patent's name has it as "silencer" you limp pedophile. I use the terms interchangably since I don't care what it's called, just what function it performs.
Correct, silencers remove the bonus 1d6 sonic damage that guns normally have
gun gays deserve the rope, every single last one of them, no exceptions.
how do you plan on roping a guy who has a gun if you dont have a gun? in order to defeat a gunfag you must be a gunfag yourself, in which case guns win either way
By using the power of The Lord to smite them, of course!
