This. If half the game wasn't a fricking escort mission, it'd be fine. It has interesting ideas.

Thankfully it isn't an escort mission and the second half of the game is good

I liked that is moving away from silent hill being the main focus and showing the more supernatural elements of the universe that silent hill is in. The ghosts mechanic was great the scares in the apartment were awesome and I liked the later half of the game where the ghosts of the victims chased you around.

I liked that stuff too, getting chased by the ghosts was the closest to being chased by the enemies outside in SH1. It's tense but thrilling. It just wasn't that fun having to go through all the same areas again. And it gets a little repetitive going back and forth between the apartment, although the hauntings were pretty spooky sometimes.

I think it ranges from decent to bad but has some decent horror and some of the best voice acting from the era. However, it speaks volume on the state of SH fans.

How come Silent Hill 3 still doesn't have a decent nude mod? It's a travesty

It's like Code Veronica or RE0, worse than the other classic entries in its series but still a decent survival horror game. People forget that most survival horror games are trash and it's really easy to frick up while making them. Considering this fact I think Team Silent did a good job

publishers like making money so if they think a new game is going to sell enough they will make a new one, they will just find a differ project leader if the main guy refuses to do it.

No, it's nearly the worst in the series. It started out with a grand idea. And it was left unfinished because Konami gave up on the IP and the entire team behind it.

      >nearly the worst in the series
i wonder if its one of the reason that so many outsourced teams were used after it came out. up until then team silent did everything themselves.

"team silent" is a name for silent hill devs, not a team of specific people, the only person who worked on all of these games was yamaoka.

If you compare it to the western-made games (save for Origins) it's a masterpiece. If you compare it to the earlier entries it's shit. Cool music though.

It has a lot of flaws, but is good. That said, there's no a single SH game without obvious flaws, and that includes the first three games

Lack of enemy variety. Some questionable puzzles like the cans of juice and rotating face. Almost no reason to really explore any outdoor areas, nothing to find and you often run into dead ends that make you feel like you just wasted your time.

a decent amount of the silent hill games could use more enemy types, i think this is one of the areas where homecoming deserves more credit, because you could put many of them in other games and find a way to make them work. they seem authentic which is impressive for some outsourced company. im tired of people not acknowledging that even if they have the opinion that the game itself is trash.(i consider it a 6.5/10)

also adding that the ending twist for me is largely what brings it down to a 6.5 from a 7 because i liked the original explanation for why this character was better at hand to hand combat than other games. him not really being a soldier and somehow fabricating that whole thing seemed pointless and takes away from a good in story explanation for his quick reflexes and ability to BTFO multiple monsters.

              > i liked the original explanation for why this character was better at hand to hand combat than other games.

He's really not though. Silent Hill games have always been giving as many move options as possible compared to the average, restricted, survival horror. The first one started with strafing, strafe running, a dodge move, different types of melee attacks depending on the player's input, and the "team silent" sequels added things combos, blocking, or a charge meter. Homecoming is identical to all that and the only difference is the camera POV.
On top of that, in Homecoming it's a LOT harder to kill enemies and it's also a a LOT harder to dodge them, the dogs can literally OHKO the character even at full health... How's that for someone who is supposed to be "better" at fighting?
Heather can do a lot of moves too and nobody ever questonned it. The difference is people decided to shit on everything HC did before playing it because the fanbase has a hard case of pic related

i havent played homecoming in years but the controls (from what i remember) are the most responsive in combat when you get good at them. youre capable of dealing with a lot more head on than in other games and its easier to do it completely unscathed. the addition of things like the evasion help a lot. i remember a criticism the game used to get was that the character was too good at combat for a horror game. I wouldnt agree with it because i think its all within the realm of plausibility and people were just comparing it to the older games. combat in older games seemed more frantic/improvised/fear based and in homecoming it seemed more methodical/poised/offensive. but thats why i liked the original set up to the story that this character was in some war o something or at the very least had combat training.

for what its worth i remember spending a lot of time in the beginning of the game getting really good at my timing and evasion. i grinded a lot of the early encounters using it as a tutorial to test things. the knife from what i remember was the weakest weapon but i would default to it in shitty encounters to have more mobility and faster attacks and i would just slowly whittle down groups of enemies swapping between them and moving around/dodging and it felt really good once i dedicated the time to get good at it.

either way i think it was a good call to thematically have a character with a different background so retconning it at the end i felt was stupid and didnt add enough to the game to be worth the plot twist. i remember thinking for most of the game he probably died in some war related way and it was as believable as any explanation for ending up in silent hill assuming there was a proper bridge to explain it.

It has a really cheap feeling in the gameplay department. The atmosphere is nice, some of the levels are ok some are bad, the entire second half is a bad choice. I'd say a light 6/10

      >cheap feeling
that was my takeaway when i played it, especially the combat. i know the meme answer is that its a survival horror game, so combat shouldnt feel "good." but its no excuse for it to feel so shitty as a 2000s title ps2. it didnt feel anything other than rushed and unpolished. I would have greatly preferred it having 0 combat. literally felt like a early mobile phone game. ps1 games get a pass for being early 3d titles. by the 2000s there isnt any excuse.

        >i know the meme answer is that its a survival horror game, so combat shouldnt feel "good."
Yeah that's an excuse used to explain away bad combat. The ACTUAL argument that should be made is the combat can be good, but you should be somewhat starved for resources otherwise there's very little "survival" in the survival horror. Something that, as much as I don't like the games and some turbo-autists here do, Alone in the Dark got right, you're barely given enough bullets (except in NN which was funnily enough an RE clone) and have to either melee enemies which is dangerous, or run away

Oh but I'm not talking specifically about the combat. I mean it's also that, but the movement, the camera angles, the menu, the animations too... doesn't have the premium feel of the first 3. Can't pinpoint the exact reason though but it felt like a bootleg version of SH, at least in everything concerning the gameplay systems

I liked it, but Henry Townshend felt like the weakest part. He felt very bland and undriven, barely ever even speaking, it felt hard to know what he was thinking most of the time.
What was so right about james in comparison?

It's a fine game, but a lot of its mechanics are more annoying then truly scary.
    >The ghosts you can't disable without one of those swords
    >The apartment becoming a cursed damage area then the second half of the game starts that you need to use the limited candle stock to quell
    >The second half of the game just being the first but with different puzzles, a damageable not very smart escort and an enemy follower that chases and shoots you randomly
    >The inventory being annoyingly limited, constantly needing to go back to the apartment and use the chest
Overall it's barely a Silent Hill game at a gameplay standpoint. But otherwise I really, really enjoy it's grungy dirty scary atmosphere. Great music and vocal tracks too.

the things you listed off i would agree with, i would argue some of these things on paper sound like good ideas but if theyre executed in such a way people would be put off replaying it because they remember it being tedious/annoying its a good argument that they weren't implemented in a good enough way to justify being in the game. i notice that stuff like lots of backtracking combined with pointless puzzles is common in a good amount of older horror games and i think it was largely a way to artificially increase the amount of time the game takes to complete and it subtracts from the game ultimately. a little backtracking is fine and sometimes enjoyable but this relies on making areas people find interesting enough to want to go back through, and puzzles often times are too many in number and transform from being interesting to getting annoying because they frequently interrupt progress or gameplay for no real reason. if you can remove a quarter of a games puzzles and it improves peoples impression of a game you probably did something wrong.

shattered memories i remember having a frustrating puzzle but i still respect it for being unique. its the one in the art room where you useyour flashlight and need to arrange objects in such a way that they cast a series of numbers on a wall to get the phone number you need. i played through the entire game in one sitting and had a great time doing it, but i remember being stuck on that puzzle for like a half hour at 3/4am before i figured it out. i at least give that one a pass because it was creative though.
