and character DEPTH no other game in the genre has
and unique idenity and cast people actually care about.
it will win in the end and be the first platform fightan to break the smash mold, it already was.
they just need to not fuck it up!
>they just need to not fuck it up!
It would be pretty hard to. I mean a kickstarter will always give me a bad feeling just because of how scammy its been in the past but theyve already literally shown off most of the base roster and a handful of stages. Hell I would say its already looking just as complete as Rivals 1 was when it was in early access kek
the OST and art in that game are so fantastic it makes me so sad how dogshit the gameplay is.

If it was just a normal ass turn based game with all the characters in a party, it would probably have done super well. It was obviously a procedurally generated run based game since it was pretty fast to produce
Honestly, the issue with these kickstarters is that these things should all be in at launch minimum. If they really wanna take over the smash genre like they advertise shit like ranked and a large starting roster should be in kickstarter or not
Needs more casual appeal to really kick off, rivals 1 has workshop
Gonna depend a lot on that, esports without personalities propping it up are a fucking meme in 2023
Man this looks fucking amazing. I was worried when they showed they were going 3D but the game aesthetically and gameplay-wise looks ace.
Rivals didnt even have a popular modding scene until late into its life. I can easily see it lasting longer than NASB and MV. The appeal is completely on the polish and gameplay with little to no crutching on muh roster.
Even if Rivals 2 had workshop, the shift to 3D makes the creative skill floor higher, though probably still not as bad as Fraymakers' ridiculously polished sprite artstyle.
I'm cautiously hopeful but the parrying and wall-jumping gave RoA a unique gamefeel among platform fighters. This feels like a clumsy attempt to lower barriers to entry but most casuals that play smash are still going to just play smash bros. Though at least Rivals can have tournaments
I do like how Fighters Movesets are more straight forward and formulaic giving rivals its own identity
is pretty much a (not) Pokemon Platform Fighter and every fighter have some form of a stage control tool with their special rather than say just a projectile, rush, rise and counter/reflect and such
Stage control and the ability to introduce new stage elements are definitely what I consider the core of the Rivals identity, and it's definitely a powerful thing to base the games off of. Hell, look at Steve in Smash Bros to see how bugnuts that is when no one else can do it.
No Forsburn or Orcane yet is a little concerning, especially since Forsburn is like my top 3 favorite platform fighting character ever. And Orcane always felt more like Rivals's mascot than Forsburn did, so their omission from the game is also a bit disconcerting.
I dunno honestly, probably Kragg since he looks to be getting the best skins.
on paper Rivals of Aether does have a direction that Ganker would like with smash bros >has a spinoff rpg >has a comic book >an adventure mode that focuses on puzzle platforming making use of what the characters can do in movement and has character interactions
what turns most people off I seen is being furry, but furries are either loved or hated, I just see them like pokemons, Orcane is pretty much Vaporeon from Super Smash Land
The fuck do they need a kickstarter for? I get that it's going to be a better part of a million bucks for them based on how the first few hours have gone, but one would think that Rivals did well enough to keep them afloat while developing this.
That's a shame but I guess it makes sense. I really wanted to like dungeons of aether too but the game balance was wack and the dungeon crawling was so basic as to essentially be a glorified menu screen.
The few people they're hiring could easily cost over $100k a year a piece if its a competitive 5yr+ experience position for each, the base 200k probably covers most of their salary for the launch
how can someone innovate in platform fighters? it's amazing that people are excited for rivals 2 but I wish we got more options bsides smash like traditional fighters do
unfortunately I do realize that game devs hate to have their pet characters murdered
so it was why MK Guest characters became movie characters rather than videogame characters
unfortunately it would be very hard to convice a game dev to get their character in a game
where say Crash Bandicoot would be dismembered by Ryu Hayabusa into like 15 pieces
Without workshop. Rivals would be buried in hell. If rivals 2 doesn’t have workshop, straight to the pits of hell with multi-versus it goes.
yeah it has a hell of a uphill battle without workshop but I think is more likely to maintain a playerbase than say NASB and Multiversus
Its playerbase will be niche just like NASB 2.
>it's going to have 200 people instead of 100!
what a thunderous achievement
not bad for a humble Indie game, being able to maintain players when others aside from the Free2play game can't is an achievement
unlikely
this one is different
much much different

The kickstarter probably had to happen because dungeons of aether flopped (rightfully so, the game was half-baked and only had good art and music)
the OST and art in that game are so fantastic it makes me so sad how dogshit the gameplay is.

yeah honestly launching a fighter with >10 fighter is a pretty much a beta
>we made another melee clone please play us pleaseee we need to become a super serious esports because that's totally why people like melee
also this
Needs more casual appeal to really kick off, rivals 1 has workshop

this is always just code for, "we don't want fanmade content overshadowing our own"
I see it as a way for them to get a second wave of hype when the main game dips
yeah that's a good point
fair point
Good luck Dan, I believe in you. Nice meeting you at EVO.
Yeah, it looks dope. Much better presentation/animation than any other non-Smash game.
Still an early build, too.
is it going to be 6 characters on release?
At the rate the Kickstarter is going, it'll have 10.
They added grabs and shields so it’s dead to me

And who are you maining?
same, either her or Fleet unless Orcane doesn't come back somehow
Fleet looks fun. I mained Forsburn in Rivals 1 though
Kragg. Loves his alt skin.
Since Elliana probably won't be in, maybe Kragg because he's funny.
Clairen's been teased a few times, so probably going back to her. If I had to choose of the definitely confirmed characters though, I'd go with Fleet.
No Forsburn or Orcane yet is a little concerning, especially since Forsburn is like my top 3 favorite platform fighting character ever. And Orcane always felt more like Rivals's mascot than Forsburn did, so their omission from the game is also a bit disconcerting.

Smash fans (especially on v) don't actually like smash for its gameplay
Actual platform fighter enjoyers are niche
what turns most people off I seen is being furry, but furries are either loved or hated, I just see them like pokemons, Orcane is pretty much Vaporeon from Super Smash Land
Made by the same developer.
I know, also heard that some have worked on Killer Instict
Looks very good and probably the most polished out of the other Smash clones.
Backed it to get the game.

If you watch the video, dan metions investing 2 million in the game already. Dungeons of aether and comics kinda flopped.
That's a shame but I guess it makes sense. I really wanted to like dungeons of aether too but the game balance was wack and the dungeon crawling was so basic as to essentially be a glorified menu screen.
they also need to hire engineers apparently, its a high paying job
The few people they're hiring could easily cost over $100k a year a piece if its a competitive 5yr+ experience position for each, the base 200k probably covers most of their salary for the launch
>no mods
I dont give a single fuck about the roster of this game.
how can someone innovate in platform fighters? it's amazing that people are excited for rivals 2 but I wish we got more options bsides smash like traditional fighters do
Same way as in 2D fighters. Spacing, game speed, lethality, combo breadth/difficulty, projectile properties, etc.
honestly I would love "Mortal Kombat" of Platform Fighters where characters
would have more freedom of expression not restricted by ESRB
I wish Xbox would make one unironically so Conker can be as crude as he is
and guys like Doomguy can be free to be as brutal as he wants to be
like the version last stock supers can be fatalities where it outright kills when it lands
Playstation all stars was almost that, supers in that game instakilled too, however it felt shit because that was pretty much the only way to kill
unfortunately I do realize that game devs hate to have their pet characters murdered
so it was why MK Guest characters became movie characters rather than videogame characters
unfortunately it would be very hard to convice a game dev to get their character in a game
where say Crash Bandicoot would be dismembered by Ryu Hayabusa into like 15 pieces
which is crazy since is easier to have Sylvester Stallone get disemboweled than a fictional character
