Single Sitting Games

Post games you can beat in a single sitting. The higher quality, the better, emulation preferred. I want to run through a bunch of well made games that can be beaten in a handful of hours or less.
Examples would include, Gunstar Heroes, any Mega Man game, Shatterhand, Genesis Sonics, classic Castlevanias etc. Something as long as, say, Super Mario World is kinda pushing it. If it's a really quality game, I can deal with it if it's really quality, but otherwise let's just keep it to single sitting. Shmups are ok but they're kind of a foregone conclusion. Again, if they're really good, go ahead and post them in this thread.
Hopefully we can have a nice thread and talk about video games that we like.

    Alien Soldier (almost anything by Treasure, really) and the new Ghosts n Goblins game.

      I tried Alien Soldier and it was TOUGH, even on SUPER EASY or whatever the mode is called. I'm sure it's something that *clicks* at some point, so I'll give it another go.
      I was definitely put off by the Ghosts n Goblins art style, but I keep hearing good things about it, so maybe it's worth checking out.

      I second Alien Soldier, it is the ultimate short game

      You really have to replay it to get the most out of it. It will click.

    In the vein of platformers I would say Limbo/Inside are good contenders. You can and are meant to beat Journey in a single sitting.

      I don't know why I always got the impression that Limbo was something about the length of Hollow Knight, I'll look into it.

        I played Limbo just recently because it was like $3 or something along with Inside. It's really short which I wasn't aware of it. Played it for a few hours and decided to call it quits for the night. Came back to it the next night and after maybe five minutes I finished it. More of less a single sitting. I didn't mind it.

    Vectorman, Mickey Mouse in the World of Illusion and Toejam and Earl Panic on Funkotron if you want more Genesis games. Gunstar Heroes is one of my favorite games and is the reason I clicked on this thread.

      I just replayed it for the first time in probably 20 years today, and I honestly can't believe the level of care and polish. It's a remarkable game.

    Most 2D Sonic games.
    The Sonic 16-bit triple trouble remake.
    Blaster Master and Blaster Master Zero 1-3 (takes about 8 hours).
    Undertale if you go for the good ending from the get-go.
    Each standalone Deltarune chapter.

      I had this game as a kid, played it many times on short car rides. Definitely a nostalgic game for me, if a bit easy.

    I've lost count of the number of times I've beaten this game, I've been playing it over and over again for years and it's still as exhilarating as it ever was, for some reason it just never gets old for me
    ever

      I know what you mean, I've been thinking of playing it again on a higher difficulty. Is there a secret ending or anything? I know a lot of older games used to do this.

      • 2 years ago

        No secret ending, nor is there any sort of extra content or incentive to replay the game at all, yet I am still driven to do so just because of how enjoyable the game is

          Yeah man, after going so long without playing it, I was certain it was going to be just as good as I remembered, but it was actually somehow better. And now through my adult perspective, it's insane how well made/polished the game is.

          If you're a fan of DMC1 I say you owe it to yourself, by playing them you'll easily see how they eventually evolved into the cancelled RE4 Kamiya wanted to make.

          I know you said "OG" Resident Evils, but is there a definitive way to play them? Just the original PS1 versions? Weren't there multiple releases of at least RE1?

            The most convenient way to play them up to date would probably be the PC versions with the classic rebirth patches by Gemini. These have all the bonuses from rereleases and the patches make them work on modern PCs flawlessly. There's an infographic I've seen posted around but don't have it on me.
            Do keep in mind, for RE1 Jill has no ink ribbons on the PC release making her run even easier than normally.

    Resident Evil 1-3, OG versions. Great games to blast through in an evening. Devil May Cry 1 as well.

      I know it's kind of cliche to say at this point, but DMC1 really does have an unparalleled atmosphere in its series. If you play it by yourself, at night, it has this really spooky, threatening, even lonely atmosphere. It's a weird and fun game, and it rewards mastery.
      I've never played the RE trilogy for some reason.

    I'll throw something a little bit obscure from genesis that I remember.
    * B.O.B. A bit long for a single session. Maybe two.
    * BattleTech It's hard but short. Expect to not finish on the first time.
    * Boogerman. Aesthetically interesting but gross.
    * Bubba n Stix. A bit of a puzzle platformer with good grempfix.
    * Cannon Fodder/Battlemaster. It's weird genre of action strategy games with large number of units on the screen. Battlemaster in particular starts to horribly lag at later stages. Not for everyone but it's a novelty.
    * Comix Zone. Must play. Just beware of genesis "typical" soundchip usage
    * Devilish aka Bad omen and Devil Crash aka Dragon's fury. Pinball with a good soundtrack
    * Doom troopers. It's a novelty platformer. Feels very much like Earthworm jim but with cranked out violence.
    * Elemental Master. Scroll shooter where you're not a ship or plane for once.
    * Fatal labyrinth. It's a honest to god classical roguelike. A session long.
    * Gauntlet 4. Again really good soundtrack. Up to 4 people multiplayer. But it's a bit long for one go. You might get tired if you do.
    * Gods. Amiga port. It's good shit. Continue to frick around with levers after you've done with puzzles.
    * israeliteel master. Very short but cool action platformer with base'y soundtrack somehow.
    * Lightening/Thunder force. https://youtu.be/oTQIiIKummw
    * Lost Vikings 1/2 I think this is one of the few games that uses all buttons of a 6button genesis gamepad. including "mode" button.
    * MUSHA. Another banging scroll shooter.
    * Pitfall. Very cool Platformer with smooth animation. There's even a secret that makes you to play original atari version of pitfall.
    * Red Zone. It's graphically advanced helicopter shooter game with on-ground infiltration mechanic.
    * Shinobi 1/3. Like contra but ninjas.
    * Risky Woods. Platformer. Looks nice but hard.
    * Shadowrun (Genesis specifically). it's much longer than one session but this shit is beyond it's time. I tell you.

      You know, it's weird, I've listened to that exact song you linked MULTIPLE times for ages now, and never once thought to play the game. This list is good, hard to believe all this good stuff is on Genesis.

      • 2 years ago

        Because it's "the" song of Thunder force(4).
        Genesis could sound very good if a sound engineer tinkers with it. Otherwise it sounds blarring and grating on ears.

          Genesis is underrated on this front, FM synthesis is good if you know what you're doing.
          That said, we also got things like Sonic Eraser's music. It's funny how this kinda turned into a Genesis thread but that's cool with me.

            Oh. That's even worse than Sonic Pinball.

              Oww my poor fricking ears. Here's some good Genesis music not a lot of people talk about:

      * Skeleton Krew. Kinda boring but good for one go and looks cool.
      * Soldiers of Fortune/Chaos Engine. Better played on SNES. Really good top down shooter with progression and upgrades. Also as usual Bitmap Brothers nonsensical secret activators.
      * Sparkster. Classic.
      * Splatterhouse 2/3. Gore filled horror beatemup.
      * Spot Goes to the Hollywood. Actually good game despite being an advertisement.
      * Starflight. It's a novelty and long. it's a fully fledged space exploration game with a deep story.
      * Streets of Rage. Classic.
      * Sword of Sodan. The SHITTIEST game on genesis. Have a little tasting and move on to something else.
      * Syndicate. 2-3 session long. It's cool though. Squad base action kinda like.
      * Tinhead. Another cute platformer.
      * Toejam and Earl. Classic.
      * True Lies. Enjoyable top down shooter game.
      * Twinkle tale. Another scroll shooter where you're not a ship.
      * Viewpoint. Just like Isolated Warrior on NES is a scroll shooter game that is trying to be isometric.
      * Wonder Boy in Monster World. Is long and it's a metroidvania but it's good.
      Here you go.

    I fricking loved the fact I could beat this game in under 4 hours as a kid and it had something like 4 difficulties for the biggest noobs like me.

    Gunstar Heroes was one of the few games I could beat guaranteed as a kid without having to leave the TV or console on overnight very carefully.

    Aliens Extermination, Armageddon, Arcade. Really quick 15-30 minute games. Quicker than the AVP1&2 arcade & genesis and way way quicker than Alien 3 for SNES and Genesis.

    Pic attached isn't just the best beat em up ever, the Devs actually want you to consider the music one album you listen to from beginning to end while you play the game. Sounds homosexual but it absolutely works.

    i randomly started playing Golden Axe II and kept dying and replaying for like 2 hours, super simple but oddly addictive (more basic than streets of rage but you have to really be on your toes with the mechanics and spacing, special magic usage etc). a single playthrough when you git gud shouldn't take more than 40 minutes, but for me 4 hours in i'm not there yet
