nobody plays pikachu outside of esoy who's barely relevant nowadays.
Pikachu is deceptively hard to play. His damage output is pretty low despite his long combo strings and he's got no good kill confirms.
He's a light character that has to constantly win neutral and fish for kills.
There's other characters like that in the game, like Sheik, and Pikachu is definitely better than them due to other advantages, but in a big a tournament setting where you have to win constantly, that's always going to hold Pikachu back.

His falling nair can combo into Smash moves. The main problem is getting to 150%, which is where Pikachu shines. Even then, Pikachu can make up for it by edgeguarding, which he's phenomenalf for being a non-flyer that has the best recovery

I still see top players putting Pika in top 10 despite lacking results. Nobody picks Pika because he's not an easy mode character. Even if Pika "invalidates" half of the cast, it's not worth it. You can't have a pocket Pika.

He might've lost game 4 badly but he managed to do an impressive turnaround against Skyjay immediately after getting clipped hard on the first stock and then maintained his mental for game 5.

Pretty simple really. Everyone lvled up. Players like Light, Kola, Riddles, Sonix, Spargo, and Zomba weren't even top 10 players pre pandemic. The top 1-15 players can hold their own against Leo.
Don't forget that because leo dominated for 2-3 years, everyone studied for hundreds of hours against him. Glutto lost easily to him for the longest time, but after they scrimmed for a few weeks Glutto is now about 50-50 against him.

it's been so long since I played Ult, last I did was to get my mains DDD and K.Rool in Elite back in 2019. How did things fare since then? Is the game more fun now?
It's complicated. Nobody can decide how good many characters actually are four years in because a good player can pilot almost anyone to success, which makes it interesting. On the other hand, the second wave of DLC is very overtuned even if only two of them are a real problem to the health of the game. If Steve gets banned, this game has another four years of being alive.
A Steve has never won a super major. That's like saying Pikachu needs to be banned.

Steve is already considered very good and frustrating to play against, now he's on the ban list discussion because he has a glitch technique that can straight up cancel hit stun/knockback on a lot of attacks
a lot of characters have moves that can do similar things, but Steve can theoretically do this on nearly any move while he's in the air and combo out of it

People will say 5.99, but it's because he was developed during COVID and few knew just how good he could be because there was basically zero tournaments to go off of and then Ultimate finished patches. There's actually a FP2 character who got heavily nerfed because a Japanese player was really good with her and now she's just "really good" and not "top 5", so it's not like they wouldn't have balanced him.
The best Steve player, and also probably the only Steve player in the world who is actually good at the game, is Acola from Japan. Most sets he doesn't play Steve as degenerately as he can because he doesn't have to, but I remember this set versus Tea being really depressing.

where Acola was getting outplayed in a 70:30 matchup and just got a few broken options off every game and won without deserving it at all.

Thankfully many tournaments are putting out a ban on Steve. Its taken smash three games for this to sink in but sometimes it best to cut out the cancer before it ruins the game entirely.
Steve was a very under the radar character. His meta wasn't all that developed. In fact, Sakurai has buffed Steve lol.
Steve isn't even broken. Steve specialist were coasting off of the opponent lack of MU knowledge.
He's broken in a way that is difficult to describe to someone who hasn't seen him. Broken bullshit options like minecart and anvil, insanely good recovery, can stall in numerous ways, but the actual main issue is that his NORMALS (tilts, smash attacks, back air) are so absurdly good that it defies logic on a character with so much jank. He recently got a unique tech called PMLG and people are now clamoring for a ban despite it never being used in tournament, but basically you can cancel the hitstun of multihit moves or just in general at low percent, and he can reversal off of that hard.
The other character is Kazuya, who I personally don't think is much of an issue, but he's just your typical zero-to-death character who happens to actually be good this time, so he has a lot of lopsided matchups even if he has significant weaknesses (in particular horrible matchups for himself). Some people just really hate watching him which is fair.

Those stages are are still to advantages for Fox, since he can move around the platforms and combo of of them better than weaker chara. Two of transformations are wack and favour fox, while the other two favour fox.
I mean, that's a better justification than "just because," but it's nowhere near as good as the stalling/infinites enabled by the other two transformations. The exact same reasoning could be used to, for example, arbitrarily extend the upper blastzones of other stages.
But then that would favour floaties in their mid tier match-ups. The mix of low ceiling/ high ceiling and big stages/ small stages is in a good place. I think FD is allowed because of peach vs fox and Ice climbers not being too good.

Marth's neutral and defensive game rely on platforms. Having a slightly better punish game is not fucking worth.
Jmook said it himself. Shiek has nast setups and tricks on platforms too.
He also prefaced that with saying "I like combo'ing Marth on FD. Shiek gets the easiest combo set ups in the game on FD Marth. The only thing he can do against it is SDI out of tilts into maybe getting an aerial on the way down.

As far as tournaments go I couldn't ask for more. Melee was hype, Ultimate was almost hype too. Lots of upsets and surprise contenders. I love these games.
Top 8 Melee was too tame, Top 64 was fun watching DKs almost making it
Top 8 was very hit or miss since we saw too many Fox players who couldn't handle the pressure. Glad that more people are turning away from him and bullying the absolute shit out of him.
