Same reason why Nocturne Maniax and Maniax Chronicles, and also SMT IV Apocalype exist
Same reason why Persona 3 got an enhanced re-release and 2 remaes, and why P4 and P5 got each an enhanced re-release.
And so on, and so forth.

    It’s quite good.
People are still pretty emotional over it and declaring “it could have been so much more is was such a disappointment” but if you were never involved in that discourse and SMT V is just some game you bought on the cheap years later after it’s hype period, it’s a really damn good exploration/monster collecting game.

    OP you have kino taste.

I might not have it top 1, but it's top 5 for sure.

SMT 5 is way better than Apocalypse, Persona 3/4/5, including "final" versions like Royal.

It's criminally underrated. I hated how bare modern Tokyo felt, but everything else was great.

for the majority of the first area up to like half point in the second the gameplay flow is so fun it makes you forget about all the glaring problems this game has. it was very fun, but it's still not a finished game. it leaves out so much from a full SMT experience it's depressing and the dev team knew it they just had to ship the game out likely cause it ran out of budget.

SMTV is weird. It's so blatantly rundown and unfinished but at the same time it's such a joy to play and just roam around in. Feels a lot like DD2.

SMT5 tickled my autism in a way other SMTs just didn't. I recognize all of its shortcomings, but the biggest one ended up being an upside to me. Running around mostly empty areas that looked really nice, enjoying the comfy soundtrack, fusan new demons. Story isn't getting in my way much. Just me and three other homies in a line. Numbers go up. Head empty. I fought Shiva and shit, one of my favorite SMT optional bosses. Great game.

I emulated it originally but I'll actually buy SMTVV since it's getting a steam release. I'm genuinely excited to play again.

Yeah, as long as you dont grind too much, the difficulty on hard feels rewarding. Unfortunately, I felt like I needed to complete every stupid little sidequest for exp because if I was underleveled the bosses felt too spongey and my MP would run out halfway through the fight. It was lame wanting to fight a boss but feeling like I should wait and kill 4 more Mandragora's or whatever. The performance on switch, specifically when going through the status screen and seeing the low res demons in your party was really lame. Generally I really liked it and got halfway through NG+ before dropping it. I still want to try and 100% the compendium and beat Demi-fiend though. Shiva was easy compared to him. Pretty excited for V:V. Stupid sunk cost fallacy or whatever is making me consider the switch version to transfer my compendium but the hardware is just not powerful enough. Nintendo really gimped themselves this gen.

I got to big open white area and all mobs were 30 lvl above me and stopped playing

Idk if hard gave me less xp but shit balancing not wasting my time grinding, felt like they just deleted a zone for that lvl gap

      Anonymous

There is an unintuitive path to take in that area and you fairly quickly gain 30 levels then loop around to where Yamato-no-Orochi are. Then you steamroll the final boss rush.

      >if hard gave me
It doesn't, taito is just poorly balanced it drops you in the area around level 55 and expects you to fight level 72 bosses. What people don't know are magatsuhi luck and how exp curve works. When you collect 10 mimans you get element talisman which enables luck, double exp and macca if you win on same turn. The game also has a catch up mechanic when you fight enemies that are 10 levels above you, you get 4x the exp, stack with luck it's 8x exp. mitamas in taito are level 65 so when you're level 55 and you luck a mitama kill you'll get like 4 level ups instantly. If you luck shiva at level 86 you will level up 9 times and get 3 gospels that give you 3 more free levels. Grinding can be done really smart if you know the game mechanics but it's understandable you don't on your first go.

What is the optimal build in 5?

level up strength or magic until level ~45 and then switch to vitality until rest of the game, nahobino becomes pure support from that level until rest of the game
you can select turn order by adjusting party members, so as a support beano should always be second and your other support preferably idun should be always 4th, put damage dealers that generate press turns in slots 1 and 3 and give them donum gladi/magici as needed and there you go that's the optimal layup

      Anonymous

Don't know if people are obtuse or not but you are obviously not meant to be able to defeat every single enemy in that area right from the start. I swear it's like half the complaints about levels in SMT V come from people who don't play RPGs.

I've recently replayed all the modern smt titles, here's my conclusion
nocturne is as fun as it has always been
4 is more tolerable with optimal build
    4a remains peak of gameplay
5 is also more tolerable with optimal build
I guess my opinion on these games didn't change much

    >SMT5 is the best game I played in the last 5 years

Why? What exactly makes it good.

If I had to think to the last 5 years. Death Stranding, Outer Wilds, and Fear and Hunger Termina, all fit within that window. Can't imagine this game is unironically better than all of those unless you're obsessed specifically with these type of games, aka a bias.

Also, notice how all 3 games I mentioned are radically different from eachother.

Peak turn based combat and party building. Extremely soulful portrayal of demons that make up your party. Complex vertical environments and exploration that are atypical for a turn based RPG. Its an RPG but one that lets you pick up and play, the game doesn't beat you down with cutscenes it just goes.

        Anonymous

        >the game doesn't beat you down with cutscenes it just goes.
This is the main appeal of SMT compared to other JRPGs to me. The setting, art and music are all really cool, but it also doesn't bore you by forcing you to experience them through endless cutscenes. It's just there while you play the game.
I like Etrian for the same reason.
