So how will Wizards go about enforcing the new OGL?

1. Sue a couple of soft targets with questionable reputation (to avoid unnecessary sympathy).
2. Use those cases to deplatform people on social media.
3. Threaten publishing platforms like Kickstarter into agreeing to your terms.
4. ???
5. Profit.

    >enforcing the new OGL
sue anyone selling products created using the SRD outside of the license? that's how you enforce any legal document

    or did you mean
    >how will WOTC get people to use the licence
in which case the answer is releasing 6th ed. novelty and the need to update things for the new edition will drag most large profitable publishers along, and then the little parasites have to follow or be left making content for a dead game with no audience

does it really matter for veterans though?
I play/GM with/for 3 different groups from different places, backgrounds and who play different systems.

All 3 of them have been playing ttrpgs since the early 2000s and only 2 quasi redditor consoomers actually buy all the rulebooks and splatbooks for their collection addiction.
The rest just pirates PDFs or relies on the 2 dudes bringing the books to the table.
The rest is a homebrew/houserule mix of older editions anyway.

I experienced that old groups stick to one game version and maybe test out a new one now and then just to go back to what they know anyway.
So I guess everyone who got into DnD in 2016 with 5e will just stay there when 6e releases and turns out to be shit.
5e probably has enough community and 3rd party content to last you a lifetime if you really really don't want to switch away from DnD

        >does it really matter for veterans though?
what? no. noone with a brain ever bought a 1st or 3rd party suppliment from WOTC. ive personally been telling people to burn their DM guides for years. Aside from some struggling publishers going under and tighter control of IP from wizards this isnt going to affect anyone on the consumer end at all.

my point is that only new players will seriously get into 6e given the current state of the OGL and then it won't take long for them to go to 5e where the majority of the community will still be.

Kinda like the latest shadowrun ed being crap and everyone went back to 5 to wait for 7.

oh what? no i doubt it. that's been tried for every edition of warhammer and horus heresy and even every multiplayer game like halo for years. 6e will have shiny new toys. people WILL want to try them, and so new games will be predominately 6e at the launch. even if some people try to boycott, and even if it fricking sucks, because thats what always happens. Then a hundred independent people will try to maintain 5e, and noone will agree on how to do it, and finding a 5e game will become a complete mess even ignoring the lower ammount of new games.

MAYBE if 6e is shit people will bail on it, but 5e is shit too, and the playtest material they released has been generally pretty good so far.

besides, where do you think the third party publishers will go? if you were assfrick gamery would you keep producing 5th ed stuff and hope for an audience while shitstain studios corners the 6e market? or will you go to 6e too and just take the lower risk pay cut? Its a safe bet that enough publishers will swap over that 6e will have a torrent of new material to keep the hype going for at least the first three months or so.

as things stand the OGL is too insignificant and the state of the game is looking too stable to outweigh the draw of new content.

because thats all four original games rolled into one package with every single map and feature at a low price. Halo infinite in comarison has five game modes and 12 maps, and no multiplayer campaign. 6e has backwards compatibility with every map ever made, every game mode (all one of them) and has multiplayer campaign by definition. do the math.

Going to 6e is a non starter for people trying to make a profit. If you make over $750K in REVENUE ten you owe 25% of all revenue past that to Wizards. No business can survive that and with the new terms they could adjust those numbers whenever they want. Then there is the fact that Wizards owns anything you make under the new OGL, and for any reason can tell you to stop making it and then produce their own version to sell. I don't know how all this will turn out bit if the OGL leak doesn't change when it releases then no business is going to want anything to do with making 6e content and a lot of hobbyist producers who make stuff on the side are going to be discouraged as well due to the new paperwork and income reporting requirements plus the fact Wizards can steal your shit.

If you make over &50k *or* if they just say so. The OGL gives grounds for them to just pick anyone under that number to demand royalties from.

              >No business can survive that
any business making 25% profit can survive that.
if (and its a big if) WOTC kills its entire 3rd party publishing market AND has nothing in stock to back it up then 5e MIGHT remain the dominant game. but thats a lot of guesses and wishful thinking. And i dont like playing 5e and i dont buy books so its not worth my time to go find shareholder's reports on gaycum publishing to find out what the profit margins for that industry are.

i keep hearing people say it, and i keep not seeing a source. steam takes 30% of its sales, and games are much more labor intensive to produce than PDFs. if you really think the market is doomed then at least show me why

If they wanted you to make money off it they wouldn't have made it so you couldn't reliably do it.

                >any business making 25% profit can survive that.
But it's not profit, it's revenue.
                >What's the difference
If you produce 10,000 books at $100,000 and sell them for $200,000, you have made $100,000 in profit, but $200,000 in revenue. 25% of that is the difference between $25,000 to wizards and $50,000. These are hypothetical numbers for simplicity sake, too. No company makes twice its expenses in revenue in a market as niche as D&D. Most of them are happy to break even. Which means it would be functionally impossible to produce books, materials, and supplements that even come close to the cost to make them if it were revenue.

which means they were irrelevant for the market in the first place, or at the very least can not be "lost" by any decisions WotC makes

        Who cares about vets
I've seen this time and time again in all of these entertainment industries. They get tons of new appeal from secondaries, they milk the secondaries, and because they are already conditioned to eat shit and like it, they replace the vets.
It's "you just lost yourself a customer" from the simpsons but in all entertainment. Old customers don't matter if you can get new customers that you milk more efficiently. It's sad, but that's the way it is. This is why Microtransactions and paying $20 more on video games than fifteen years ago was normalized.

I dont think Kickstarter gets a choice in the matter. If youre trying to use IP without a license to do so then its copyright infringement, whether its D&D or something else. Kickstarter won't host something thats blatant copyright infringement
Its arguable whether or not WotC can revoke the 1.0a license and what is or isnt IP in the game space, but for anything that IS IP, its pretty clear Kickstarter cant do anything about it
Same thing as if you tried to take copyrighted media to a storefront printing company and have them print a copy of it, most places will tell you no if they do even the slightest check

Explain to me because I am dumb but why are "creators" so special they expect to profit from an owned ip but not the ip holder itself?

inability to read mostly. the license grants you permission to make specific products based on a specific source document which varies by edition. Idiots think this means a license to make anything based on anything. We have a new edition with a new source document, so we have a new lisence. WOTC wants more money for their IP this time. businesses that want to exploit WOTC's large market share and widely recognized IP will simply have to make a fincancial decision about what's best for their business and then maybe pay for the privilege.

oh also they're trying to invalidate past licenses which may go to court if they try to enforce it. thats a pretty big dick move since the past licenses are perpetual.

I don't see what the issue is, it's not like WOTC have an armed guard stationed at every table playing dnd in the world ready to shoot you if don't adhere to their moronic rules, this whole thing seems like a nothing burger

All they need is some dude to sit in front of a computer and look for popular DnD content on Youtube, make copyright disputes.

After a while they won't even have to do it because big creators will stop making DnD videos.

You're an idiot because the OGL has nothing to do with what you can do at your table. Its always been whatever you want and will continue to be that under a new publisher. This only affects 3rd party devs selling/publishing products, NFTs and mobile apps

      >i keep hearing people say it, and i keep not seeing a source.
The source is the OGL 1.1. leak.

If they wanted you to make money off it they wouldn't have made it so you couldn't reliably do it.

Thats a source on the rule change, not on the profitability of third party publishers. Dont be moronic on purpose.

Anon, I have studied and worked in business management for years. This OGL? This is unironic poison, no fricking company in their right mind would ever sign something so predatory in literally any industry. The term of this is that for any REVENUE, not profit, above 750k you will forfeit 25% of that money. If you ever asked another company to sign over 25% of revenue in a contract, they'd laugh in your face and tell you to get the frick out of their office.

Adventure League will boot players who don't use authorized sources and minis. You'll have to build your character at home with the pirated PDFs and actually buy spell cards.
