So i have just started playing this game on NES. Pretty good so far.

So i have just started playing this game on NES. Pretty good so far. I've got almost the entire 1st floor fully explored and am just starting to dip my feet into the 2nd.

I have a small question though. Is there anything stopping me from doing:
>create a bunch of new characters
>pool all of their initial gold into someone that actually matters
>delete the discardable characters afterwards
>repeat this ad infinitum
Over and over until i have basically unbelievable frick-you tier amounts of gold that would allow me to resurrect anyone at will and become invincible by buying the best possible equipment and tithing for tons of exp at the temple?

Never played wiz besides the very not retro labyrinth of lost souls but on that game I just created like 20 trash characters, unequipped their gear and sold it, then deleted the characters. Always do the same on etrian odyssey

Seems like it's a pretty recurring strategy in games of the genre then.

Switch to the SNES or the PS1 version. The NES version has a glitch and armor literally doesn't ever take effect.

      Also: No.

Damn. I really like the aesthetics and atmosphere of the NES version over the later ones (and original) tho. The OST is also very good (the SNES remixes don't compare in my opinion). Is there any romhack or patch that can fix it?

Nope. It's a very well known "cheat".

Though do be aware that the amount of gold new characters start with is pretty pathetic compared to the kind you'll find lategame, and that the best equipment needs to be found, not bought.

Thanks for the info bro. If i may ask, do you know if the items found in chests with more dangerous traps (e.g. exploding box) will necessarily be better or something of the sort? Or does the trap not make any difference? I found a couple exploding chests in some rooms in 1F but i'm terribly afraid of fricking with them as the manual says their damage is enough to wipe out an entire party.

What trap a chest has does not influence its content.

I see. With that in mind, are there ever any reasons to attempt to disarm something like an exploding box or teleporter chest? Is the risk worth it?

How much damage traps do depends on the floor, in general you should try to experiment with chests and see how regularly yo're able to disarm them on that floor before making the decision to disarm a dangerous one.

It won't save you, actually it might I'm sure how hard the NES version is.

I think all the early versions are pretty similar difficulty-wise.

What's the best way to play these games? I was going to just use DosBox and get them off abandonware sites. I see a couple of the later titles on gog.

The games already have a full English translation, you just have to navigate to the settings to enable English text

The PC88 ports are good and lack the various bugs present in many western ports. They're good choices.

The PS1 remakes are handholdy remakes for babbies,

If you want to play it in it's original difficulty then you should be playing Apple II or C64. PS1 is perfectly acceptable way to ease your way into the series

The C64 port is based on the PC88 one, I don't think they're notably different in any way. The original Apple II version has a bunch of bugs that got straightened out in later versions.

Bro you're not going to get new people to play wiz 1 first time in 2022 without automap. Shits not going to happen. It they get a liking to the game then they may try the actual originals

That's LITERALLY what OP is doing.

Also, anon asked what the best way to play these games were because he wanted to play them and your immediate thought was to recommend an easy mode remake because you think he can't handle a real game.

Not the guy that asked, but if I asked what the best way to play a game I hadn't played before was, I'd have appreciated if people that recommend easier remakes as "the best way to play" at least MENTIONED that these were easier remakes.

Not that anon. The remakes are piss easy or just a little easier than other versions of the game?

They're much easier and ruin lots of intended challenges completely.

So are the DOS versions the same as the PC-88 and C64? b/c that would probably be easier to set up if I wanna try the originals

          >So are the DOS versions the same as the PC-88 and C64?
For the most part, yes, but it's slightly bugged and makes you lose stats on level-ups much more often than you're supposed to.
          Still playable though.
