I think it is a good game overall, but a terrible sequel to the Chrono IP. It is like the Star Wars sequel trilogy: barely gives old favorites any screentime/acknowledgement only to unceremoniously kill them off.

A lot of people criticize the battle system and the lack of leveling, but it really is a game where the random encounters are basically window dressing with the "real" fights being the boss encounters.

I really love it. The atmosphere is amazing, it's the best looking ps1 game, and the combat system is downright addicting but only really in the first half. Once everyone starts learning lv. 6-8 elements anything on the lower tiers just becomes useless damage wise and it just devolves into spamming screen nukes. I'm just starting disc 2 but kinda feel like dropping it just cuz it's going on too long.

The midgame-to-early late is the most difficult part. Once you beat Garai, Highwayman, and Miguel it becomes a trivial stomp because of all of the different characters and elements you get.

The main problem with the game is precisely that imo,the battles, chrono cross loves to waste your time with visual effects, capturing spells, running away so you can steal, and reloading the battle if you didnt get the good boss drop, etc, not to mention the enemies interrupt your attacks,so you lose your % build up,forcing you to either miss or do small damage, extending the battle even longer,oh and if you get game over by accident, potential hours of gameplay down the drain, its hard but it can happen i guess

i dont mind a game where i can take my sweet time to min maxxing everything but chrono cross makes normal battles feel like a chore,i NEVER see this critical point of the game being brought up in these threads, its always SONIC ARMS ARE NOT BLUE kind of complaint, like the fact chrono and gang died being a negative or how the story is convoluted, its always irrelevant shit like that, funny enough i never see those complaints being brought up as often in xenogears threads or breath of fire 4 or other convoluted 2deep4u ps1 rpgs

You can literally skip all normal battles if you want. Running away is 100% guaranteed...heck, you can run from most bosses too.

That is true, however,a lot of places have mandatory battles to go through even a straight line, its just illusion of choice,i played the game again like a month ago so i still have the memory fresh in my mind, more than half the encounters you are forced to fight, but even if you could escape every battle you need the drops from enemies sometimes anyways,or capture monsters with the gnome lady, heck i remember half way through the game i was actively trying to not battle due to how bored i got

I actually played it last month (well, probably closer to a month and a half), as well and did not really find issues choosing my battles. Nothing monsters drop is really needed to beat the game comfortably (even with the Time's Scar hard mode mod) and the only part where enemies backed me into a corner and I could not escape was in the El Nido Triangle.

I mean,i guess you can just ignore materials, money, spells and everything else,id still much rather have a way to turn off the animations or simply not have the enemies interrupt you so the battles flow better so i wouldnt have to avoid such an integral part of a jrpg, chrono trigger didnt have this problem at all

This is fair, and the fact that you do not really need to do random battles for progression is similar to the modern Paper Mario problem

It's a beautiful game that was too committed to its theme and should have been a stealth sequel like Koudelka-> Shadow Hearts instead of wearing its connectiom to Chrono Trigger on its sleeve.

It DID need to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger, because the developer wanted to make up for how lightly he made of time travel in trigger, but he didnt need to get people hyped up for a Trigger sequel, only to hit them with a completely different game, made in spite of its predeccessor.

Most NES games are better than that shitty unfinished VN, it's not exactly a high bar to set let alone reach.
Cross is passable but ends up sharing most of the issues that plague Trigger and doesn't really use its large cast as well as it could, even though most people are too stupid to appreciate what it ends up conveing well through it.

It's an absolutely beautiful game. People who get hung up on the "IT'S NOT A PROPER SEQUEL TO CHRONO TRIGGER" autism can't see the forest for the trees and should get the rope.

There are very few games that have such aesthetic refinement.

I think a game can be both a good game and a terrible sequel. The game does look amazing with an equally-good soundtrack (besides the normal enemy battle theme, good god).

Better than xenogears, disc 1 of xeno was great, but disc 2 is like a couple hours long of just narration.

The only real issue I had with CC was that killing the final dragons to get the real ending with clown girl was way tougher than anything else in the game. The game at large was a downgrade to its predecessor. The story made almost no sense, most of the music was a downgrade and most of the best tracks were just remixes of CT. Most of the characters were worse. Clown girl was good, overpowered Alien was good, The storyline where redhaired girl gets poisoned is bad because she is a good character and if you frick up by not cleaning her poison you wont get access to her for most of the game. They also treated the original cast of CT like dirt.

Why do CT gays have such a major hate bones for this game?

Because the game essentially spit on the legacy of Trigger, it is understandable for people to be biased against it.

    Worse.

They had the chance to do a cool love story (no matter the distance or time, I will always find you kinda bullshit) but they had to go full autismo putting Chrono Trigger things (just things, not even fan service, just random things) and fricked all up.
Best OST of that generation though.
