The opposite of this guy. The bosse sare cool other than the AoE attacks that deal 90% of your HP and take up half the arena.

The DLC has some of the worst areas in all of elden ring though. Some are OK.

In terms of enemy variety it's absolutely barren. It's pretty. I like the music. But the gameplay of fighting enemies (which is 90% of the open world exploration) is dry as shit.

the snow map is over hated. and as far as mountain tops goes its better than all the DLC areas other than the first one you come into.

BY better i mean the snow has more dungeons, has more puzzles, has more bosses. You mean mountain tops right? Yeah its actually not a bad zone at all. THe reason people dont like it is because they come in with 30 vigor and start getting 1 shot with a lvl 15 weapon and they dont find the bell bearing and they suddenly feel outclassed. Otherwise its a very good boss rush zone

The problem with the area is that it isn't fun even with summons. Like Cave of the Dead is goddamned awesome if you have own gank squad, but Frigid Outskirts is just tedious no matter what you do or how you do it.

DS2 was revolutionary in some ways. You could also literally put any area to NG+ and reset it without actually going to NG+ by burning an item at the bonfire. That way you could easily get multiple items of the same type or get NG+ exclusive stuff early. Or just fight the boss again if you wanted

Same, weirdly enough Malenia was the only boss I found fun to fight, and I guess Mogh too. The rest I never found their designs interesting and the lore is nonsensical so I just never really cared about them. Morgott, Maliketh, Godfrey, Radagon, I don’t know who the frick they are and I’ve even looked it up a few times but it’s all too dumb to commit to memory
However I must be in the minority because I actually did enjoy most of the DLC bosses

Romina is the one exception. Totally fair. No combo spam. Feels like a true Dark Souls boss. Ugly-ish design, but really enjoyable to actually fight. Actually fair.

Romina, the Putrid horse, the Sunflower and the Hippo are all more than fair. The other are bs yeah. Infinite combo where you can die in one or 2 hit should not be the norm. I can't count the number of time I died with litteraly all my flasks while being at 60 Vigor.

      >Tower settlement
      >Shadow Keep
Ensis is like a halfway fort, I guess if you want it's not impossible to count Rauh or Stone Coffin as legacy dungeon-lites
Abyssal Woods would be a good legacy dungeon alongside the Manse, but the Manse is too short
Honestly, Ensis should have been bigger, Shadow Keep more explorable, Metyr should have had her own dungeon.
Miquella's tower barely counts, I'd say in total there's maybe 3 legacy dungeons in the expac

I actually found the dungeon before the final boss to be one of the better ones in Elden Ring.
Finally some long stretches between graces unlike the DS3 checkpoints we've been getting the entire time.

If you tell Moore to stay sad forever, he immediately goes off and dies next to the rot kindred by the church of crusade (where you can loot him)

It doesn't work like that, more damage doesn't mean more poise damage. A +25 S-Scaling weapon will stagger in the same amount of hits as the same weapon at +0 D-Scaling. The specific attack determines the poise damage, nothing else.

Fun bosses, fun map to traverse and explore, cool unique weapons, bad story.

I can easily see myself putting another 100-200 hours into Elden Ring thanks to the DLC content, but the DLC itself feels kinda hollow with the lackluster story presentation and shallow characters outside of the Tarnished NPCs.

      >fun map to traverse
this is the worst for me, the map is a total PAIN to traverse its full of cliffs and canyons that you need to keep wasting time to circle around them, its a disaster.
The actual dungeons though are masterclass of level design.

Worst thing about this DLC are the rewards in open world areas, they are pure trash, period.

As for the Bosses i think they are pretty good.

Massive expansion, probably the best Fromsoft DLC but it has also the most flaws. it depends where you look, flaws or good things.

Because he's a moron obsessed with getting revenge on not just Messmer, but Marika, the Erdtree, and all who fall under its banner. So even though he has his thanks for you for helping him beat Messmer, you're one of his targets too. It's the cycle of genocide and revenge-genocide that went on that you got involved in.
      >Marika's people are wiped out by the Hornsent to create greatjars
      >Marika instructs Messmer to genocide the Hornsent in turn, then hides her shame in this and never gives Messmer orders again, leaving him alone in the Land of Shadow without instructions or grace

I loved it, sincerely. It’s so much fun and it is pretty well balanced. For the most part with some exceptions, which can be patched.

There are legitimate issues with the dlc, that taken as a whole can make the it a 4/5. Though a lot of the complains I see are mostly bad, not all of them, but a lot them. These are some of the complaints I’ve seen

“why should I have to change my weapon to beat the boss?”
“Why should I use a shield to not get hit?”
“Why should I have to explore to get stronger?”
Why should I have to use a Crystal tear to help me with a boss?”
“Why should I use a summon?”
“Why can’t I go into the dlc immediately?”
“Why should I use an S tier weapon to beat the boss?”
“Why should I have to change my awful weapon or setup for a boss?”
“Why should I have to roll?”
    “Why is it so big?”
“I hated the base game because I hate how open world games, so I but the dlc thinking it would be different but it wasn’t, therefore it’s bad”

I wish for nothing more than for people who hate Elden Ring and fromsoft to simply never waste their money and time on these games again.

Yes the dlc has some some issues, a lot of those issues can be patched though. Not all of them. Still though, what an amazing dlc.

      Anonymous

Listen big boy, the issue is that in every single Souls game you were able to use less than S tier weapons and finish the game comfortably. That's good design. If, however, you are forced to use very specific tactics in a series of games where you could so much more in the past, then you can easily conclude it's a degradation of design. It's not something you can easily patch, although numbers do make a difference. You can't patch the visual clarity or the movesets, those make the fights miserable.

I will go as far as to say that there are only very few complaints that I don't agree with, but otherwise everyone is on point. The game is quite broken. Is it bad? I enjoyed my time riding on the horse through different locations, so I can't hate it. But I won't play it again.

        Anonymous

Through much experimentation and theory crafting I have deduced that the major difference with elden ring is that you either are expected to use a shield or just accept that bosses are going to be inherently trial and error.

If you use a shield then you can use any weapon comfortably vs any boss. If you dont use a shield then you need prior knowledge of how to play vs certain moves or you will take dishonest damage.

Shields are now acceptable baseline items even for tryhards that are learning the game for the first time to remove the "trial and error" element of the bosses.

This is all assuming you refuse to summon and not use OP weapons. I dont care what your opinion is on this matter if you only use those

        >the issue is that in every single Souls game you were able to use less than S tier weapons and finish the game comfortably

I played DS1 when it released and I didn't have to cheese anyone to win. Some bosses like Bed of Chaos were pure horseshit but other than that manageable.

The NPC gank fight before Radhan is actual bullshit if you have to do all 5 and aren't summoning. Other than that it was mostly solid.

That fight is uber tedious if you play solo because the tank guy throws fricking rot jars at you, and then it turns into 1v3 if you kill Freyja. I really really wanted to do it solo but I just summoned Ansbach because it wasn't worth it. Frick this game

Yeah I agree with a lot of that. Some issues, like the camera on certain bosses, I don’t think can actually be patched. They dropped the ball on that.

As for using S tier weapons, you don’t actually have to use them (except arguably the last boss). But then you’re essentially going out of your way to make your build weak. You can avoid using strong weapons for your build, but it is smart to also avoid using good talismans, armor, shields, and spells and then also complain your build is weak? That in it of itself is not bad game design if you ask me.

I also don’t think it’s a bad think that many people get burned out from this game and dlc; it’s overwhelming for sure.

        >Listen big boy, the issue is that in every single Souls game...

Each "Souls" game played completely differently.

DaS had a different flow from DaS2, different from DaS3, which was different from BB, which was different from Sekiro, etc...

Even if you want to focus ONLY on DaS games (why, since this isn't DaS4?!), the point still stands.
THIS game was meant to be played differently so invoking 10+ year old games in a different series is bizarre.

He doesn't have a lot of health and Messmer is very, VERY good at killing the frick, so I opted to do Messmer's first phase myself, then immediately summon Hornsent once phase 2 started. You can evade the Base Serpent's fire orb by standing on the outskirts of the arena, and it places you right at the center when phase 2 starts, so turn around, summon Hornsent, and walk to the edge, and you'll be good to go.

Godwyn's can't be revived because he's tied to Fia's end. The Mending Rune of the Death-Prince is Godwyn's soul, reborn through Fia's ritual as a Deathbed Companion. So Miquella had no chance of reviving Godwyn.

          Anonymous

You have to make it somewhat believable anon. Godwyn's death is a pivotal moment in Elden Ring and reviving him makes everything that happened in the game look stupid. His soul being destroyed is a necessity so it can't be bought back. Why is this so difficult for you Black folk to understand?

            Anonymous

He doesn't have to be revived for it to work. Have Miquella try and fail to revive him, so he's mech piloting Godwyn's dead body in the final confrontation. Make it so completing the DLC locks you out of the duskborn ending. They could have found a way, but instead they chose to rehash another character in a way that didn't make much sense anyway.

              Anonymous

That's even more ridiculous since Godwyn's body is spawning deathblight. Why would Miquella want to revive someone that's literally bringing cancer to the world. Also that won't be Godwyn, at best that'll be a reanimated fish monster you're fighting.

                Anonymous

I'd be ok with that. As for Miquella's motivations, they don't make that much sense as it is either. Dude wants to spawn an age of kindness, but he sheds his heart and his love in the process. Godwyn at least was admired and known to be a peacemaker. Miquella could have plenty of reasons to have someone like that by his side, but the ritual backfires or something. Idk, just use your imagination, dude.

Yeah that shit is moronic and doesn't suit kindly Miquella

                Anonymous

Miquella was very very desperate to become a God. A lot people, including Malenia, were hoping that he will become God to solve their problems and cure them. Most of Miquella's projects ended up becoming massive failures like the Haligtree and the Eclipse. The needle was a partial success since it did somewhat stop Malenia's scarlet rot but she still had the rot festering in her. After all those failures and the hopes of people in his back, you can see how desperate he became. So desperate that he forgot himself and his core values.

Radahn was chosen by Miquella becuase of his strength and kindness. Miquella saw his compassion on his horse, his strength when he literally stopped the stars, and thought that maybe he has found his own Godfrey. He needs a strong Lord to enforce his will since his body is weak and frail. I do think Godwyn would've been a better choice than Radahn due to Godwyn's kind and peaceful nature. However because of Radahn's physical prowess and Godywn's death and later corruption, the former was chosen.

                Anonymous

Why did Miquella need a strong consort when he can just compel people to love him and live for him? He is stated to be the most fearsome of all empyreans because of this, which should also make him the most capable god in existence, since he doesn't need might to make right like everyone else. Both Radahn and Godwyn should be useless to him, now that I think of it.

Miquella still has the body of a child, very weak and frail because of his eternal youth curse. It's why when you kill Radahn, Miquella is insta dead as well. His body doesn't take very kindly to physical damage. He also needs an enforcer to spread his word much like Godfrey is to Marika. Then there's also the future problem of finding someone or something Miquella can't charm easily like (You) which seeing his weak physical body would spell his doom. That's why he needs a consort: a bodyguard and enforcer of his will to faraway lands.

There's some condition to his mind control setting in or Ansbach could never have tried to free Mohg. Even if it's just proximity all it would take is a little bad luck and down comes everything Miquella's built.

his mind control seems rather weak and merely suggestive, he had to make promises and deals to his "followers" and some were still aware and hiding their cards even with the spirit of jolly cooperation foisted on them

Marika could literally thanos snap people out of existance by having control over total death, but still needed Godfrey & Radagon.
"Consort" in ER's case is basically a right hand man/general. They are the sword and shield of the Order's will, and whoever the Order has chosen as their god

Exactly, the writers could just have willed this into existence, they are the ones who wrote the fricking lore. People saying "erm, this is actually impossible" don't really understand that what's possible or not in fiction is decided by whoever writes it, so if fromsoft wanted to have a decent ending, they could've found a way.

Miquella sacrificed everything including himself to become God. He's also following Marika's footsteps which is a very dangerous precedent. Meanwhile, Ranni needs (You) to become a God. She also doesn't sacrifice her love just to become one.

As if that ever stopped anyone in high fantasy settings. This DLC didn't even have to be in the same material realm as the lands between. They could have placed it into a metaphorical dream world like they did in Bloodborne, so what we fight is a manifestation of Godwyn and his tormented dead soul. As long as it makes the encounters more interesting, I don't care if it's "possible" in lore or not, since possible really doesn't mean anything in the world of Elden Ring.

    My 3 big issues
    >Shadow Keep is good but the other 2 dungeons are underwhelming
    >the map has way too fricking much empty space
    >some of the bosses are overtuned and unreasonable for anyone not using summons
Aside from that I think I enjoyed my experience a little more than most of the original game, which falls off a cliff after Leyndell and never recovers

More than anything, I think Shadow of the Erdtree betrays the fact that Elden Ring already felt incredibly complete. Where Artorias of the Abyss expanded the world and game lore, the Three Crowns DLC added a lot of great fights and dungeons that base DS2 was lacking, and Ashes + Ringed City served as a great epilogue to the DS trilogy - Elden Ring really needed none of that. It had plenty of worldbuilding, more than enough boss fights, and Malenia and the Haligtree already served as the games epilogue chapter.
So - that's my biggest indictment of the game. It's very telling that the overwhelming majority of players chose to use their existing characters for the DLC. With the DLC included, Elden Ring has become a very bloated game that will be incredibly hard to recommend or come back to.

My second takeaway is, I think SotE shows that From has already exhausted everything they set out to do with the open world formula. I think it has officially run it's course. The base game consistently felt rewarding to explore, but SotE just feels tiring. Hiding the map pieces was a lazy way of artificially making exploration more difficult. On top of this, many sections of the world either feel brutally punishing or needlessly confusing to navigate, or totally empty. Belurat and Shadow Keep really drive home the fact that From's strengths are in building compact dungeon areas, and the open world of SotE really feels like window dressing.

AotA tackled a vague section of the lore that the fans were all clamoring for, SotE seems to go out of its way to avoid a lot of major lore mysteries and needlessly ruins existing characters, it's bizarre

    >While doing this find a way to scale down the cliffside to yet another area
    >It keeps fricking going and now I'm in some catacombs miles away from the Keep

I hit every single wall in that place thinking an illusory would reveal a spoopy basement that would lead out back.
The stealth section leading up the the manse is not done well which is weird because sekiro has shown they can do cool and smart sneaking sections.

Why does it feel that some areas were added in the last minute and were afterthoughts? The spooky woods with a tiny legacy dungeon and like 3 frenzy lanterns, the jagged mountain with like 2 copy-paste dragons all the way until Bayle, the cool looking green ruins with copy-pasted enemies when you get to scarlet rot parts for no reason and you fight a random-ass scorpion boss out of nowhere

    >Positives
Art direction is obviously incredible, from have still got that magic. Weapons, especially the boss ones are cool. there are new weapon groups which are things people have been asking for for awhile which are nice. The size is extremely large and there is a lot to explore.
    >Middling
The new major spells/incantations are cool, have neat animations, but each of them have a huge wind up time which means for normal enemies it's rarely worth it and for the tougher ones and bosses they'll just knock you around before it goes off. There's also apparently a lot of problems with their implementation like some not being affected by talismans like they should be, and some of them are just straight up worse than far cheaper versions. The world is big but there's really not much in it outside of the legacy areas, there are HUGE swathes of land that have literally nothing in them even if they look cool. The soundtrack is inoffensive, I literally can't think of a boss theme off the top of my head when I could in the base game, but that could be because I was sweating bullets and devoting 99% of my brain power into just staying alive to notice the songs. The new difficulty scaling mechanic is implemented strangely, I'm not sure what they were going for with it
    >Bad
NPCs and quests are still fricking as obtuse as ever, good luck figuring anything out without a guide. Enemies are either so weak to be barely worth your time to kill or unstoppable poise monsters that crush you in a fair fight. The bosses are almost all terrible to fight, some of them outright cheat with invincibility frames. The spastic, hyper aggressive movesets are just not fricking fun to fight against.

My thoughts are that I mostly enjoyed it but it's time for FromSoft to branch out and do other things. I think it's a good thing that Miyazaki is stepping back to let the company make different kinds of games while he works on the next Souls game. The formula has been stretched to extreme lengths with Elden Ring's size and aggression.

      Anonymous

The size is great and they will never go back after ER.
The aggression, especially in the dlc, is not good anymore.

I still like it overall but I can see that I'm someone that will always like it and I'm a small minority. Radahn was bullshit and the feedback has been pretty unanimous that they should not ever go that far ever again.

The huge scale is here to stay though.

Can Enir Ilim be a reference to Enuma Elish?

Not really. The name is definitely there as an homage but the enuma elish is a creation mythos tale while Enir Ilim is a physical place. That physical place does look like a high society type thing that would serve as a proto culture though.
Radahn is named after the Radahnites, outside of broad strokes he isn't actually anything like the radahnites from our history. Its just loose themes.

    >what did you think about the DLC?
I think the final boss of SotE represents the evolutionary endpoint of the Dark Souls 3 design philosophy. That is to say, making you a slow guy in armor rolling around while FromSoft throws Bloodborne and Sekiro bosses at you. I think FromSoft is also aware that this formula has reached an evolutionary dead-end, otherwise why else would Miyazaki express an interest in further expanding upon the gameplay philosophies behind Bloodborne and Sekiro?

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is, or at the very least should be, the final triumph (or hurrah, if you prefer) of Dark Souls 3. Because that's what it is ultimately a successor to. This format has peaked and there is nowhere further you can go after Radahn, Consort of Miquella. You cannot push this envelope further. So now FromSoft needs to work on how they can improve upon what made Bloodborne and Sekiro so good and apply that to their next title, because Elden Ring (or Dark Souls 4, I should say) has finally stretched the Dark Souls 3 game design philosophy to its limit and broken it over its knee.

Didn't like most of the bosses either because they were reused from the base game, human weapon showcases, or overtuned to hell and back. I simply can't be entertained by the same old roll2win strategy for the billionth time.
Exploration was still fun though, I really liked finding new areas, even if the item rewards were still mostly dogshit. At this point I'd be happy if fromsoft made a game entirely about exploration because the enemy design is only getting worse.

Radahn really left a bad taste in my mouth, it's just insane that he's like
      >Choose your destiny:
      >A) No shield: you receive an incredibly hard boss with a single combo that literally can't be dodgerolled without tanking one of the hits and tons of attacks designed to catch you, along with an avalanche of shit you need to run out of constantly and tons of visual noise to hide what the frick the boss is doing
      >B) Literally any shield: you receive an easy boss that can be consistently easily parried, you don't need to run from half his explosion shit so you get double the punish windows, completely trivializes some of the bosses most annoying tendencies

they were thinking you should try any of the numerous defensive options besides just the same midrolling you've used for everything else in the entire 150 hour game
like the new deflection tear they give you right at the start of the DLC, or quickstep/bloodhound step which everyone loved to talk about using against base game bosses but suddenly nobody likes them anymore, or the winged crystal tear so your rolls get caught less easily
people spent the last two years b***hing about rollspam and now all anyone wants to do is roll and it's actually game ruining bad design that the final boss of the postgame DLC that you've paid $100 to fight makes you interact slightly more with the mechanics

if you don't see the problem with the final boss of a huge open world experience forcing you to play in a handful of very specific ways, i dont know what to say to you

            Anonymous

forcing you to use anything other than just midrolling does not require you to respec your entire build
it does not even require changing your build, surely you have something in your physick that's less useful than deflecting hardtear or winged crystal
whatever big flashy ash of war you're using is obviously not doing you any favors over a quickstep when you're stuck with no windows to use it because you have to midroll constantly
how did you even beat malenia if you can't adapt your build to a new challenge even a little bit

              Anonymous

well look okay I was being a little hyperbolic, you're not wrong about that
I do think the developer intent is to force the player to think critically about the challenges they're facing in a fight and use their accumulated combat options to adapt to it
but to me the problem is less about adapting to a challenge and more about the huuuuge chasm in difficulty between using a shield and not using a shield
its just not good game design, and no other boss feels that way (to me)

I hate how front loaded both the main game and the DLC feel. You jump into the first area (Limgrave/Gravesite Plain) and you have a blast exploring, but since 90% of the game's enemy types are in said area, the rest of them feel like filler and not exciting enough. As a completionist that explored every single bit of the map it felt like a chore since almost every enemy you encounter outside of Gravesite Plain is a re-used one and there's little excitement to be had, unlike the linear FS games. I guess this game is better enjoyed as a sorta boss rush instead of taking your time to explore everything, in order to prevent burnout

Fragments was a bad idea, especially once you go in with multiple characters. HATE having to try and find the last few I missed.
Some cool bosses, some gay ones. I love the Abyssal Woods but I just wish there was more to it. Sad Frenzied Flame and Bloodflame didn't get more stuff.
Love the martial arts weapons, they're neat.

The abyssal woods didn't need to be woods
In previous Souls games that sort of mechanic has often been used in prison settings that are tightly designed
And nothing as crass as insteadeath grabs were needed
They should have made it part of the mansion and just designed the mansion bigger and better while they were at it

        Anonymous

People miss the point with the abyssal woods, it's not that it doesn't have any items, it's that it's too fricking big which is the main issue with the game. The map is far too large to justifying trekking through empty swaths of space just for basic consumables or combat encounters. The Souls games are supposed to be claustrophobic. If the game was just shrunk down significantly while keeping the major content, it would be fine.

    >Map design is moronic, for example, getting to Rauh base requires you to go to the opposite part of the map and find a cave that leads to it underground instead of actually finding a way to it that's near it like any logical person would do
    >Absolutely moronic NPC quests that break by following the natural path, or are completely stupid in terms of arbitrary bullshit, like Thioller's quest
    >Bosses are stupidly overtuned and rush your ass the moment you step out of the gate
    >Best NPC in the game, Igon, for some reason doesn't have a Radahn festival summon sign that auto summons, so you often time get killed by Bayle because you are stuck in the menu prompt "WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUMMON IGON?" what the frick From are you moronic?
    >Large chunks of the map are fricking empty and pointless, like the Finger Ruins
    >Abyssal Woods is fricking empty and boring and a waste of a cool concept

I liked it day one and then the Honeymoon period died fast and hard. There are just so many stupid decisions in this game it's fricking baffling.

That is such a dumb mistake. The Souls games are known for obscure bullshit. Explore and read notes left by players. The map design is so much better than the base game because of this nonlinearity, intricacy and secrecy. The problem is how much of it is empty.

How is it a dumb mistake though? I don't play online, there are zero hints that there is an illusory wall there and it does not look like it would be one. It's literally just a random wall like any other. I know sometimes the level design suggests it would be a wall, or the wall looks suspicious at a glance and you try it, but this wasn't one of those. The wall is just a completely normal one and it's in a secret room with other loot in it so you don't suspect you're missing something.
This sole wall locks you out of a gigantic part of the map, like 5 dungeons, and multiple major bosses. Again zero hints that it's there.

No it doesn't. Name one other on the same scale. Closest you can get is the ash lake in DS1 but that has neither any unique boss in it nor is it significantly big. It has a little hidden covenant but those are generally hidden. It can also be reasonably stumbled upon by a player mimic checking the chest infront of it.

Ash Lake is definitely more cryptic to find, the basement you're talking about can be seen easily from the keep if you just drop down the ledge meanwhile The Great Hollow is in an early-game area with multiple invisible walls

    >dungeons still leave a bit to be desired compared to previous From games
    >the art direction is even better than the base game
    >the new weapons are some of the best they've ever designed
    >the boss design is a mixed bag, but they're getting excessive with how spastic bosses are and how many AoE attacks they fart out at the end of combos, while also having some of the coolest ones they've ever done like with Bayle
    >most of the areas are mostly empty despite looking the best they ever have
    >the enemy reuse is still really bad, and a lot of the new enemies are annoying to fight
    >the NPCs are some of the best quests they've done like with Ansbach and Igon
Well worth $40, over all really enjoyed it even for the art and new weapons alone

Totally agree with what you said but I'm not sure if the flaws you mentioned make it worth $30. There's far too much empty space. It's like if they made Radahn's desert several times.

Agree with everything except it being worth $40
I hated the open world in the base game but actually liked it here, it was really fun figuring out how to access every part of the map and most of the areas were beautiful. However it ended up being a bit misleading, a lot of the areas are completely empty and the random non-legacy dungeons are just boring, and I imagine another playthrough would be a drag
I actually enjoyed most of the bossfights, even Radahn after telling myself to be patient and learn him, but I think they could definitely be toned down a bit. If they're going to give every single boss a 10-hit combo and then a second phase with AOE's after every attack, at least give the player room to breathe by giving the boss a stamina bar or something

The shining aspect of this dlc for me was the map design. Base game is very much an open plain when it comes to exploration but the dlc map's "verticality", which isnt verticality at all because there are very few spirit springs, spreads the map out like tangled branches on trees making the map very linear as you explore, this allowed me to naturally pick up on basically all the npc questlines without depending on youtube videos which i cant say the same for with the base game because its too easy to take the wrong route through areas and miss questlines.
On the other hand, people have mentioned how barren it is in terms of content. I really wish they populated the maps with the crypt bosses that give you all the cool armor and weapons which i think they originally wanted to go for; i looked forward to fighting the red dancer in the cerulean shore like in the trailer but was let down when she was turned into a ghost in a copy/paste crypt. These mini bosses should also have been harder since they would have characterised the landscape. They spent so much time making places like the Cerulean shore or the back end of the Shadow keep as beautiful as possible but then make it completely fricking empty its such a waste. There are less mini dungeons but they often are more unique in my opinion and they aren't just a copy/paste mine or catacombs but usually have some cool mechanic that isnt in the others or some unique aesthetic like the ruined forges, the dungeon that took me down to the madness forest was a good and purposeful use of a dungeon in my opinion. I'd rather have 5 cool and unique dungeons than 15 bland identical ones.
Miyazaki said Elden Ring wasn't his perfected open world game, so if that is the case and we're going to get an Elden Ring 2 instead of linear jouneys then this is definitely on the right track. But if i have to keep fighting those birds in every different region then I'm going to lose it.

When the announcement trailer dropped i thought everything in the widepan of the world was about it, that the cerulean shore was nearer to the north over the hills or something and that it truly was just about the size of limgrave and the weeping peninsular, if the map was smaller then they could have really emphasised the verticality and kept content a lot more dense. I feel like they just wanted big for big's sake and didn't know what to do with it. We didn't need two enormous finger ruins that exist for the sole purpose of sounding the respective horns once and never going back there.

Miyazaki wants to make Dark Souls 1 combat that’s super punishing and honest mesh with Elden Ring’s combat which is half assed fast passed action slop and it culminated into the boss design of Shadow of the Erdtree being some of the worst in the series. Every boss is either obnoxiously difficult or laughably easy, somehow with skibidi powers balance is worse than it’s ever been for a dlc. Every boss but Messmer and Super Radahn I killed in less than three tries. Those two however I was stuck on for fricking hours, because I didn’t have the tools to deal with their fast, and seemingly never ending combos. The map is really lame, which is a shame because the music and skybox are really great. The whole fricking dlc besides the last two areas are grassland swamps and two castles. The areas being so boring makes finding skibidi fragments frustrating to collect, because I’m just experiencing boring shit from the base game but everything 2-3 hits me. The story is boring, and takes away from the story in the base game. I really would’ve liked if they just focused on building up the lore of Chaos and the Three Fingers, adding more to Madness beyond being the PvP status effect - I think it would’ve worked well as a self contained story way better than what we got as well. Instead we got Animeme-Waifus brother and Radahn being ass pulled for no reason, can’t forget to mention
Rellana who just shows up and does everything better than her sister.

FromSoft fans will always be the best dicksuckers in the league, treating Miyazakis as if he walks on water, and he’s definitely getting a fat head from his infinite praises online. SotE is the most sterile, underwhelming, boring, stupid, and safe shit FS has put out yet. I was genuinely surprised how much people actually loved it, especially people actually defending shit like Radahn. But who knows maybe I’m the moron. (very likely)

      >Why did miquella tell Melania to go give Radhan super aids if he loved him so much
He wanted Radahn to be his consort but Radahn wasn't into it. So Malenia was sent to go beat his ass, she just fricked it up and managed to both break Radahn irreparably but also not actually kill him or render him subservient. Miquella's plan goes on hold until the player kills Radahn.
      >Is the gay incest thing with Mohg, Miquella, and Radhan a meme or is it actually in the text
Memes; Miquella manipulates everyone to get what he wants, and by the end of his journey he has even discarded his capacity for love as a whole. Mohg was nothing more to him than a demigod with knowledge of rites relating to accessing the realm of shadow, and later a conveniently available corpse to put Radahn's soul into. His whole plan with Radahn was to gain control of him. With the strongest demigod as his consort, there'd be nobody who could challenge his "more gentle world", which should tell you what "gentle" really entails and why St. Trina wants you to kill Miquella to prevent it.

Beautiful world design. The endgame area in particular might be the most visually incredible From location yet. Enjoyed the story and side characters. Some truly great new weapons, items, ashes, spells, etc. Most of the bosses absolutely suck though. Inb4 git gud, I’ve been playing FromSoft games longer than most of you have been alive. They crossed some kind of rubicon with the boss designs here, they are just far too tedious and annoying to fight when you’re limited to Souls-style combat. They might actually be fun if they were dropped into Sekiro, but not here. Also having a whole series of sidequests cut off merely by approaching the Shadowkeep sucks. Should have been a seal like Raya Lucaria.

      >They might actually be fun if they were dropped into Sekiro
Not that it defends their bullshit, but using the deflecting hardtear pretty much turns it into Sekiro and it makes the bosses actually fun to fight
I agree with you though, I’ve been playing since Demon’s Souls and it seems like they keep trying to up the ante to make it more challenging for veterans but it’s just tedious at this point

I’ve been playing since AC1 and KF2 on PS1. The deflection tear is neat but nowhere near as reliable as Sekiro’s system. The pace of the fights just doesn’t fit these mechanics, if you dare to try and use an item you’ll just get chunked for 50% of your health. The input reading or whatever is going on when you try to drink is getting really obnoxious too. At least in Sekiro you could sprint or step dodge out of the closing frames of your gourd animation to avoid whatever was coming your way. The gameplay here doesn’t support fighting these Dragonball Z villains even slightly. The only bosses I’d say I enjoyed were Metyr, Romina, and Bayle - and even Bayle was nearly ruined for me by the camera.

Is the Erdtree Seal still the best seal for a mostly pure faith character? Not expecting to take the other casting stats above say 25.

Yeah they didn't really add any Seals worth using because most of the DLC incantations are trash and the new Incantation types only have like 3 each

The boss balancing in this DLC is extraordinarily boss. Why are all the later bosses the easiest?

Scat fragments were really poorly balanced, and it's the usual case of putting the best content first so that the influencers and journos experience it during the review period.

Metyr is a spectacle boss and folds like tissue paper to any real pressure, you can fire bleed arrows from an unupgraded bow and take it down
Rellana was difficult because you were meant to find more scoobodoobies but the routes to find enough for the fight to feel good were basically top secret, the patch fixed this in my opinion
Lion was a very clear "come back later" boss

I'm working on collecting the rest of the Scadutree fragments before I go after Radahn, but having beaten every other boss the single worst one is the Divine Beast Dancing Lion. It's so damn difficult to tell when he's attacking, he tends to flail when you're to the side of him, getting you caught in his model (and damaging you in the process), you practically can't attack during the lightning phase, and his ultimate combo of spamming elements sucks ass. The second one getting a deathblight phase on top of the others is just icing on the shit cake.

All other bosses are reasonable to good. THIS one sucks.

its because of the fricking scadushit system for the most part I think
although romina, gayass and sunflower (if you decide to do them later game), and metyr are all probably the fairest bosses in the game scadushit notwithstanding
but still, the way it should have been is that by the time you explore an area and get to the boss at the end, you will have found enough scadushits to beat the boss and wrap up the area in one go
the most annoying and disappointing thing is having finished exploring an area and finding that youre too weak to beat the boss at the end so you have to leave to level up more
this happened to me with bayle, putrescent knight, hippo, and arguably messmer (although I thought messmer was not nearly as bad as people said)
and lion + rellana being hard walls at the start was just awful

        >gayass fair

I would definitely count stone coffin, kinda meh on Rauh and abyssal woods. At least the gaols kinda make up for the short lengths of the main dungeons.

A lot of the semi legacy dungeons run on the shorter sides. On the other hand the side dungeons are the best in the game by a mile, so it's not so bad. I do wish Stone Coffin was bigger though, same thing with the Manse specifically. Or rather, have the abyssal woods contain ruins that we could open shortcuts

While not really too difficult, I'm surprised no one complains about the Scadutree Avatar. This is probably one of the worst bosses in the entire game.
    >10 mile tracking bleed thorns that sometimes hit you even if you dodge
    >Spends so much of the fight creating distance its like Elden Beast but with 3 health bars
    >lmao just respawn that's such a cool gimmick

    >all the particle effects and large thorn pngs in your fricking face make it impossible to see what the boss is doing

It’s got the same issues as some of the Armored Core 6 bosses, either it’s hours of tedious retries perfectly mastering every pattern and tell or you summon a spirit ash to distract it and kill it in less than two minutes with something like Bolt of Gransax. This also works on Putrescent Knight and Messmer.

Dodge the slashes to where the beams won't be. If you're going for deflects you need to stay as close as possible so the aftershocks won't hit you. Just don't forget about the bigger shockwave that he ends his combos with.

Dodge to avoid both but if you can't its usually better to take a beam or miq's light cloines as its normally easier to stack holy resist over physical resist and the holy attacks tend to do less damage except when they occupy the entire screen

Would have been cooler if the bosses were callbacks to figures we heard about in the main game like Bloodborne. The Old Hunters was top tier part because of this. Like who the frick cares who Romina or Gaius are. Metyr is on the right path being lore relevant if not known in the main game but she was too easy.

New content is good, sucks that it has absolutely 0 connection to any of the old content gameplay wise.
    >no new interactions with Melania and Melina
    >no prior quests with Leda before killing Mohg, she just magically shows up and tells you to hop in the cocoon
    >no new endings involving Miquella, the dragons, or anything really
    >handful of Godwyn items with no real answer for how the frick anything with him can be fixed

Guess a part of me was hoping there would have been something added or changed in the base game, but I guess Miyazaki was being honest on there being no connections at all for the dlc

Boring and sloppy. Visually it looked stunning at first, but it's just the same trick of having a bunch of brightly colored flora on the ground that contrasts the skybox, with an instagram filter slapped on top.

Enemies are even more cancer than in the base game, proving that they learned nothing from their mistakes. It's incredible that the dudes who made Sekiro could shit out this abomination. It's not fair and satisfying, it's meme difficulty, and all the dual wielding spinning anime Black folk look embarrassing.

I will say Belurat was a cool Legacy Dungeon that presented an interesting culture. Just like the base game, these locations with extreme pollish is where From shines. Can't save this from being mediocre dlc though. Old Hunters, Artorias of the Abyss and Ringed City are way better than this shit.

Enir-Ilim is a really cool final dungeon. You can see the tower shrouded by shadow since the beginning of the game, most of the game is spent finding a way to reach it, and the place feels like a giant Hornsent buddhist temple. Mattosis was right about mostly everything.

The conversation around difficulty, is so boring and artificial. And when they say "too hard", they just mean bosses. No one is talking about the levels anymore. Flanderized design. DeS was "hard" because the whole game felt obtuse and old school, losing half health on death, entire level runbacks, hidden mechanics like world tendency...

Removing ambiguous fog gates, runbacks, sparse bonfires and lack of fast travel (& therefore meaningful shortcuts) actually made the games simpler.

Bosses not representative of whole game. 95% of my playtime is exploring, bosses are 5%. Tired of people treating games like boss rushes. DLC bosses aren't even "that hard". Challenging but well designed, clean patterns and openings, less bullshit than main game's endgame.

The issue isn't the bosses, it's the dated gameplay not evolving to match boss power/speed creep. Input lag and buffer, roll on release instead of press, fumbling with dpad, etc. reaching tiresome level.

The world/map design is incredible, borderline experimental and so far ahead of the rest of the industry, for me it's the highlight of DLC. This is actually deserving of long essays and articles. Yet no one is talking about it and most just rushed through it without appreciating it. From are masters of atmosphere and designing architecture and topography in gaming.

But usual issue of open world: filler, emptiness, formulaic, recycling, meaningless enemy placement.

But my #1 issue is a lack of conceptual creativity/adventurer problem solving/interactivity and surprises.

DS1 excelled at this. Bridge dragon, pitch black catacombs, invisible cave paths, lava/poison ring, Londo archers and catwalks, hydra, tight level design favoring mindful positioning, unique boss arenas, Sen's, Great Hollow... level design pushed you to use your tools and engage with world logic. See: DS2 DLC.

This is what I crave in ER but feel disappointed with. It's there but so diluted and lacking.

      >DLC bosses aren't even "that hard". Challenging but well designed, clean patterns and openings, less bullshit than main game's endgame.

I suggest going back and fighting Malenia, Godfrey, or Radagon. They are slow motion compared to DLC bosses.

      >The world/map design is incredible, borderline experimental and so far ahead of the rest of the industry, for me it's the highlight of DLC.

Really? I feel like it's reaching for the verticality but not pulling it off well.

This is a terrific post. It doesn’t belong here but I hope you know that I agree with just about everything you said. Logically, the boss battles are the set pieces so that’s what stands out in people’s minds. Maybe I’m not that experienced in dungeon design, but I really love the dungeon design in ER. And that’s the area I feel gets the closest to that Demon Souls/DS1 labyrinthian thinking outside the box content.

        >really love the dungeon design in ER. And that’s the area I feel gets the closest to that Demon Souls/DS1 labyrinthian thinking outside the box content.
I felt that most during the smaller side dungeons. It's not much but having to activate a lever that changes the level design a bit or dealing with new gimmick threats like the forge giants with back weakness in tight corridors and basilisk statues/eyes, that's the stuff I love. The problem is these are self-contained with deadends and formulaic/recycled, don't feel satisfying as exploring the interconnected world. I felt that satisfying large scale interconnection briefly during the Shadow Keep flooded church district and it just made wish I was playing DS4.

      >The world/map design is incredible, borderline experimental and so far ahead of the rest of the industry

Are you kidding? This is one of the worst aspects of the dlc, obscure routes between zones. Reminds me of my first playthrough of the base game, looking for a way to get up to the Manus Celes area in Liurnia by searcing every fricking nook and cliff. They doubled down on this dumbass design in the dlc.

        Anonymous

Agree with you, they tried to make things feel connected like DS1 and instead its just confusing and more unnatural than base game. It's more "why does this lead here?" instead of "damn that's a cool way to get here"

        Anonymous

        >Manus Celes area
Yes exactly, it felt special when you finally got there precisely because you had that curiosity and spend time trying to get there in vain. Reaching a place after hours of wondering how to get there.. I like the unpredictable and mysterious aspect of it, less "logical" exploration so can be frustrating and map screen itself isn't suited to that design change. But on a technical design level it's incredible.

There's no way you believe that the endgame of ER is more bullshit than the DLC bosses. Only Malenia is even worth putting in the same conversation as DLC bosses

Possibly two things: I was just burned out of the game by the end (too long and bloated), and/or I got better in two years. But final ER boss rush just felt tiresome to me. DLC has better pacing, never got tired of it.

The only thing I'll say in Maliketh's defense other than what the other anon pointed out is his HP. Yeah he has stupid bullshit anime breakdance moves but he also has relatively low HP for the point of the game he's at. It was okay. Not really worth the price. They dumped a ton of the development effort into overdeveloping a handful of bosses and the stupid Skubtree balancing feature just meant to frick with people. No real reason for it to exist like that, it just exists to be inconvenient and try to circumvent pre-established player power while no previous DLC has ever tried or needed this.

I don't know why they're so opposed to making the camera zoom further out in certain fights.

Divine Beast, Radahn, Scadutree and Mother of Fingers all would've been enormously enhanced by just making the camera pull back another 50% or so.
