Sci-fi settings without aliens have always been more interesting to me. The best science fiction never had them either, like Dune, Foundation. Battletech is even great. Anything you can do with aliens, you can already do with humans. I liked the idea in the Hyperion Cantos that the Ousters had genetically engineered themselves to such an extent that they appeared alien to mainline humanity.

Because the game isn't designed to be interesting but is designed to check boxes. At this point if I want a good crafting/exploration sci space game I'll just play No Man's Sky and if I want an engaging story with interesting companions and aliens then I'll just play Mass Effect. After doing two full playthroughs of Starfield it's clear to me the game is just bland.
