So was Nier Automata the only financially successful game from Platinum Games?
I'm kind of bummed that FromSoft and Miyazaki get so much critical and commercial success for rewarding skillful play , but PlatinumGames never seem to catch a break.
Americans aren't into Kaiju/Sentai/Mecha weirdness (as the Monster verse and Pacific Rim and Titanfall flopping show) so Kamiya's next game will probably flop too tbh.

Nier Automata was the worst thing to ever happen to Platinumgames.
Are you sure it isn't MGR?
Yes, because MGR was the second worst thing to happen to them.
MGR and Bayonetta were the only good games they made, everything else is bargain bin trash
This, if they didn't make NieR then they would have gone bankrupt and not blighted the world with garbage like Bayo 3
Yep. Their games all became homogenized after that.
In a perfect world The Wonderful 101 would have been a hit.
>capeshit but made by le crazy twitterjap
nah, have a nice day
>3 combos the game
Amazing how cuhrraazy fans forgets to mention you can't do anything similar to DMC or Bayonetta in that game when it comes to combo potential. Best you can do is juggle them but even that's not necessary, best you can do is combo an attack into another but weapon changing is like ass, even with analog controls. No idea why people like it so much.
Weapon change is not harder than a fighting game input
Don't you mean Babylon's Fall. That game that no one played and is now offline after less than a year?
There has to be a story behind that games development. It was made from reused assets from FF14 and had mobile game tier graphics. I wonder if it was a cheap F2P/mobile game that got retooled for some reason
>Babylon's Fall
This will never not be funny
I was a PG fan but then after the PS360 gen they suddenly only made games for the troony systems, so they can go bankrupt for all care
Bayonetta is the worst thing to happen to the studio
Kamiya*
true
they should've died instead of shambling off of its success
At least if they died prior to 2019, they'd be remembered as the Westwood Studios of Japan.
Now they're just gonna be the Bioware of Japan instead.
It was the only game that made them money.
gay take, platinum were always hit and miss
Without a good artistic mind to back them up they shit out souless action crap
thank frick those days are over
It's because those games suck and are gay. Dark Souls and Elden Ring are white men's games.
Didn't all the Bayonetta games turn a profit?
The first one flopped so hard, Sega declined a sequel and Nintendo was the only company desperate enough for exclusive games to fund the sequel.
First game didn't per say flop. It just wasn't big enough for Sega to support.
>The first one flopped so hard
But it sold like a million units on the PS3/360 alone?
Because SEGA overshipped it and retailers threw it in the discount bin.
No, Sega couldn’t fund a Bayonetta 2 because Randy Pissford was siphoning all their money into Maymaylands 2 around that time, instead of the Alien game he promised them.
>FromSoft and Miyazaki get so much critical and commercial success for rewarding skillful play
LOL
MGR did well too. The first Bayonetta turned out a decent profit just enough for the financially struggling Sega to support it. I have no idea if Bayonetta 3 was a financial success but it should be higher than 2 at least
PG went into live service and ruined themselves. All they had to do is take the big leap and make an open world game with DMC combat
They were trying to make Bayonetta 3 open world, but the Switch hardware was struggling , which is why it was delayed and retooled late in development
Good.
Getting real tired of these open world games.
That's disappointing, but that's to be expected since the switch is weak
This could've been PG's Elden Ring...
>PG's Elden Ring
It was way too ambitious. The xbone at the time couldn't even run it at a stable framerate AT THE PREMIERE. If it was released it would've been a buggy mess but if it worked, PG would've eclipsed every other dev.
>Bayonetta 1 was developed for the PS3/360
>Bayonetta 2 was developed for the Wii U
>Bayonetta 3 was developed for the Switch
It's crazy that the entire trilogy developed for consoles on the same hardware level over the span of 12 years
>morons believing this without a single source
gays.
>open world game with DMC combat
Anon...
I was gonna say I thought they were only contracted to do that shite game for squeenix but they opened a whole new studio to do live service games, lol
Babylon's Fall could've been successful had they kept the 2019 version.
I hope they make a Genshin clone that makes endless money on the Asian market so they can find more action games tbh.
Live service was forced on them by the publisher - Square Enix.
Sup Krillin. Still spazzing out like a teenage girl on twitter? lmao
MGR and Vanquish are the only good platinum games
This.
And Bayonetta, Wonderful 101 and Astral Chain.
But ONLY those.
And Transformers Devastation.
And maybe others, haven't played Mad World, Korra, Sol Cresta or NieR Automata.
why did you include a bunch of mediocre/shitty games to my list of good games
Anarchy Reigns.
the only neat thing about anarchy reigns was seeing the mad world characters in color.
>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
A fantastic example and really managed to bring the excellent PT combat into the Metal Gear setting mixed with Kojima weirdness and over the top action. Native on PC, a worthy addition to the MG saga with aa totally different take.
>Vanquish
Perhaps one of the more "western" focused in that its basically a Spess Mahrine shootan gaem, but its a good one and you gliding around shooting, dodging and the like is a nice variation on PT's normally melee focused titles.
>Bayonetta 1, 2, 3
Excellent, pure character action. If you like the genre, you're going to have fun with this here and most seem to like the setting and characters. Kinda curious if PT is involved in that new Bayo-as-a-kid prequel thing which looks completely different
>Wonderful 101
Massively underrated, sleeper hit that originally came out on WiiU and has unique mechanics because of that. Remastered version on modern consoles and especially PC is definitely worth it - its a pity it didn't get more publicity and show up on sales frequently on Steam. If you like super sentai/tokusatsu this is your game, its a loveletter to everything in that trope. However the mechanics can be a little daunting because of the need to "draw" (with the control stick,) certain forms but they're simple enough like circles, lines, L shape etc. Overall very enjoyable but didn't get as much praise as it should have - they're actually still making new expansion/DLC for it!
>Astral Chain
Pity its Switch only, but thankfully can be emulated well on PC! Very Japanese, future-police-with-cyberpunk-monster-on-leash, adds new dynamics to the combat. Definitely worth playing
>Nier Automata
Brings PT style combat to the SquareEnix "Drakengard" setting with its own wackiness. Plus robot breasts and ass, impactful storyline along with PT character action
>Sol Cresta
Under the radar, this shmup is sequel to ancient JP arcade title. Out of room, but well made
I puked a little in my mouth
>Bayonetta 1, 2, 3
>pure character action
this is why you don't take platinum nuthuggers seriously
Tell me which part of "character action" involves rail shooting segments and calling in summons?
pure lmao
Tell me which one involves first person underwater sections
NTA but you can pull some interesting stuff if you use the summons right
>summons are... le bad!!!
looks like a typical example of skill issue to me
Maybe if you're a moronic casual. Vanquish is less offensive but the design is still all over the place.
Bayonetta 1 and The Wonderful 101 are the only standout games Platinum has made. No one gets it like Kamiya.
>Bayonetta 1 and The Wonderful 101 are the only standout games Platinum has made
You can stop shilling your shitty minigame collection, it has already flopped twice
filtered
filtered all the way down to the landfill
>but PlatinumGames never seem to catch a break.
maybe they should avoid shoehorning awful minigames and focus on core gameplay instead
FromSoft get commercial success for rewarding unskillful play.
Their main mechanic is literally about recovering from dying.
You're deluded if you think people (or even you) want to become skillful.
Skillfull and challenging play is fine as long as losing isn't as soul crushing.
>Their main mechanic is literally about recovering from dying
What is this moronic cope?
When I got into character action games a couple years ago the space harrier section in DMC1 almost made me drop that game. I found that Bayonetta is nothing but sections like that so rather than give myself an aneurysm I choose to just ignore that game.
>So was Nier Automata the only financially successful game from Platinum Games?
The frick are you on?
Astral Chain was a massive success ann.
It broke well over a millin and Nintendo took the full rights for it due to that.
Pretty sure Bayo3 made good money back too.
They really need their own IP. Every successful game they've made was someone else's so they can never milk it and turn it into a franchise, that's what separates them and From. When From hit it big with Dark Souls, they made 2 sequels and a spin-off with the exact same formula before ever doing anything different.
>comparing PG to FromSoft
lmao
From knows game design. They know art design. They know atmosphere. They know lore. They waifus.
Everything PG knows is a battle design. That's it. Everything else is absolute trash. That's why Nier Automata works. That's why MGR works. They can't make a good game if their lives depend on it. But they can take a nearly finished game and insert their battle design
No they don't. Demon souls and dark souls are shovel ware tier games, as was their whole catalogue. I'm a big From fan before soulshit, and part of the appeal was they did different shit while feeling slightly budget. AC series is a big on, never up to par on any console in terms of graphics or game design. But because they did everything different, their games felt fresh and fun
This is why the soulshit took off, it filled a gap that the rapid assassins creeding of the industry had left.
I agree with the overall point but don't know if Dark Souls is the best example, because it is just NotDemon Souls, the Sony IP. And before that they used to be the Armored Core guys, maybe is not as big, but they milked that one way before dark souls was even a thing
>iron giant figurine
Kamiya is so fricking based.
Platinum is just gonna become a Nintendo slave studio like the people who make the mario sports games. Nintendo doesn't care that their games sell like shit because the purpose of Platinum games on switch is purely so they can advertise it as having "mature" games.
Astral chains sold pretty good
What's stopping them and Yoko Taro from making another Automata? Or was that game's "success" just a meme?
>I'm kind of bummed that FromSoft and Miyazaki get so much critical and commercial success for rewarding skillful play , but PlatinumGames never seem to catch a break.
fromsoft actually makes good games, while platinum... doesnt
they have some potential, but it is never realized
Platinum just can't make coherent action game.
Despite the popularity boost Metal Gear Rising got 8-9 years after release, DmC was legitimately better game on the gameplay side.
