the absolutely massive pokemon variety and seeing them and their mannerisms in the open world is a lot of fun.

between major areas you find at least 5-10 new pokemon every time instead of having to see the same 3 pokemon and their lines for 30 levels. you can also find some surprising choices of supercharged pokemon in the wild.

the villain team is underwhelming gameplay-wise

I was disliking the gyms at first until I met the electric gym which was so dumb it was funny

the rival has a fun personality, but her battles are too easy

basically it's super enjoyable if you enjoy filling the dex, though if you care about story in pokemon for whatever reason, then you'll be left disappointed. and yes, the game would probably be hailed as one of the better games if it had way less bugs and fps issues

      >inb4 open world is gay
kanto and johto had lots of sequence breaking possible, stay mad

Honestly unintentionally fricking yourself over is the most fun.
      >start game
      >"You can go anywhere, so go nuts!"
      >Think stuff will have level scaling or something, so I just go West
      >frick shit the gyms are actually pretty challenging
      >keep heading West
      >defeat Water dude, the Pokemon around the town are ~30ish
      >did Bird Titan and Iron Treads
      >huh I wonder why my ride pokemon is so slow
      >ask gf how shes doin in her game, complain about being slow
      >she asks if I ever went West
      >N-No
      >She never went West and got the Waterriding and Flying ability

Sequence breaking is possible because there is a sequence to break.

I heard there were finally some overworld interactions with Pokemon. What do they get up to? Have they finally managed to do better than Ranger did in 2006?

There's shit all, really. Some mons will run away from you, some will run up to you, some will attack you. They don't interact with each other or the environment. Outside of sleeping most do frick all.

It certainly is more advanced than what was in PLA, but only fractionally.

Lets guess the year that we'll get a Pokemon game that looks like Ghosts of Tsushima.

    My guess is 2074.

It's honestly not great, but it directly addressed three of my least favorite things in Sword and Shield. Battles aren't in creepy detail free voids, there's actual shit to do besides just gyms and raids and the free roaming area feels expansive enough where it actually matters, more like Legends Arceus.
But some things are worse, like now that Pokemon crowd around each other, there's that common issue of getting linked into multiple battles in a row wether you want it or not. Free roaming is ultimately a half realized feature without scaling gyms/bosses/titans, specially since Pokemon still won't listen to you based on level, so you can't even over-grind and work backwards unless you just use your starter. Also raids still just aren't fun even if the song is good.

The exploration in this game mogs anything else in the series, performance issues haven't really hurt my experience outside of the main city where npcs are everywhere

    >no obnoxious handholding from town to town, gym to gym like gen 7 and 8
    >trainer battles aren't mandatory and completely avoidable, instead of being path gatekeepers that pop up at you, interrupting your fun
    >Wild encounters are no longer RNG patches and also completely avoidable
    >auto heal + auto battle saving pointless time wasted on useless UI menu repetitions
    >catching and completing pokedex is actually fun like in PLA instead of the trash formula from every game prior

Game is unoptimized as shit and they deserve criticism for it but theres no way I can go back to the old formula, as polished as it was after the quality of life changes

It's what normies have been wanting Pokémon do do since they first found out about Pokémon games.
That I myself envisioned a Pokémon game in a massive overworld map akin to Zelda II when I first played Red means Pokémon took 26 years to catch up to what the public wanted.

Actually being able to play the fricking game and do what I want without NPCs breathing down my neck like what they’ve been doing heavily since gen 4. After Arceus and SV I hope they never make a “”traditional”” game again.
