    retcon

(in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency.

why? what purpose does it serve? they obviously had a plan for the original episode 2 ending so why change it?

because that plan clearly went out the window 15 years go and they had no idea what to do

marc laidlaw already gave out the plan for how the half-life series was going to end, they knew what every character was supposed to do, and eli wasn't in it because he was dead. why would they change it? just to fuck with the story and make it more interesting because we already knew how the series was going to end?

Episode 3 was leaked ages ago by the writer, also they wrote themselves into a corner compared to what they could do. They needed an excuse to get out of it.

          > also they wrote themselves into a corner compared to what they could do
what corner though, it was a pretty cut and dry story and ending to the universe, alyx and gordon go to the borealis and send it off to the combine homeworld where it blows up and supposedly gets them to fuck off from earth. i just don't see what makes this more interesting by having eli live and alyx somewhere unknown.

            >what corner though
Laidlaw published the story ten years after Episode 2. Valve responded to it three years later with HL Alyx. Sure it might have been a fine story back then, but both player expectations and it being spoiled made it unsuitable for a post 2017 release.

Should've tried to finish Episode 3 then instead of wrapping their heads around what revolutionary ideas they should've done for it.

Because they are stupid, and this is one of the most unnecessary retcons ever. It was already clear in ep 2 that the G-man was able to control alyx, and resurrecting eli offers no purpose at all and removes tension

Also there is something so uninteresting in setting up alyx Vs Gordon. It's not something cool like Adrian Vs Gordon for example

Gordon is the G-man and he was the saboteur in black Mesa.

In the final scene Gordon asks the G-man why did he act that way if they were the same person, then Gordon turns to the player, says "oh, it was to hide everything from HIM" and then the G-man and Gordon shoot the player - end credits

    >so what the fuck was this ending? where did alyx go? did the episode 2 ending never exist?
The mechanics of how Alyx gets taken at the end of HL:A but still persists in Half Life 2 is the weirdest part of the ending. However the most important thing to stress is Ep2's ending does and still does happen, if it doesn't happen then HL:A's ending doesn't happen, so Eli IS KILLED AND HAS TO DIE but then unkilled by Gman shenanigans.

    >who the hell was the woman talking to the advisors?
There's a model of the lady, but that's about it. I cbf finding the interview but the devs said it is not Mossman.

    >how did the combine manage to trap the gman?
    he let them catch him.

The events of HL2 and its episodes always happened. Gman put Alyx through a test in a virtual reality similar to the ones you enter through in his speeches. There's a good chance some things never happened, so G-Man being trapped in stasis might not have occurred. My theory is that the combine advisor woman is Colette Green from Half Life Decay, who trapped G-Man after he attempted to hire her on after the death of her friend in Xen. Gman literally says that he is authorized to make small nudges from time to time, ala saving Alyx Vance from Black Mesa, or bringing Gordon Freeman back from stasis. Everything happened, but G-Man took advantage of Alyx in her time of crisis after the death of her father in order to test her, and then hire her on as a replacement for Gordon since he'd gone on his own, abandoning G-Man after the end of HL2 at the citadel.
