I don't care. These are elemental monsters, not college graduates in need for a job. I hate that gen 6 solidified the concept of "professions" in starter Pokémon because now we're never, ever going back.
I wouldn't really put it down to Gen 6. "RPG classes" isn't necessarily a profession thing, and it's arguable that the feudal leaders of Gen 5 are a profession if Gen 6 can be considered that. It's also not really a stretch to go from "kitsunes are magic" to "magic fox", "animal with armoured shell" to "tank" and frogs/ninjas have been a thing in Japan for many, many years.
I would say that Decidueye was the killing blow. That's the exact point where it's profession first, animal second - because unless I'm missing something then there's not really much of a connection between owls and archery.
These are alright. Decidueye is definitely the best design out of the 3. Though Rillaboom would have probably worked as a better grasp starter for the region.

IMO Gen 5 has a bigger issue with the starters just not feeling like good starters. Any one of these designs on their own, as just random ass Pokemon would've been fine, but they're lame as starters.
This is all to say, they look fine. Hisuian Samurott also improves quite a bit on the base design, which is probably the most contentious of the 3.
I dont care for furry pokemon, but I think Meowscarada's executed decently enough. It still has some animalistic traits, unlike just-a-literal-soccer-playing-furry over in Gen 8. I can see it being too human-like for some people, though.
Skeledirge is decent and was my choice, but I gotta say its sig attack animation hurt my opinion of it.. using its bird as a fricking mic stand to sing into it in an over the top job-mon kind of way hurts. I figured the "singer" aspect was a less anthropomorphic sort of way, akin to Altaria's singing. The mish mash of colored shit on its head looks messy and incongruent with the rest of the design, regardless of its inspiration.
I think theyre both alright, but I can see why some might not like them. Neither offend me to the degree Intelleon does, though.

Nah, his gross flat hands and head design are trash. Only thing he's got going for him is his ninja theme and scarf. His weird tongue scarf also fricks up his colors though. Dude literally has 3 random shades of primary colors on him. The pink isn't even picked up anywhere else and doesn't complement the other colors. Would have worked better if it was more orange than pink. Delphox has great colors that are used through the entire design. It also has a great theme (it being a wizard) only thing holding it back are the weird ears. Chesnaught is piss yellow through most of his design. The piss yellow then has a really gross shade of green that I can only really compare to boogers. Then some random ass red line on his shell outlining the green that isn't seen anywhere else in the design. It's shiny should have been its main colors. It does have that orange ring that isn't anywhere else. But, the orange and brown are pretty close so it looks alright.

Don't get why they are being compared to the Random ass gen 5 starters that have nothing to do with the region they are from.

When it comes to Unova, the issue for me will always be the typing/stats. Samurott deserved part fighting (or anything really), and Emboar could've stood out with something else like steel (Chinese Ding pottery)
Hisuian Samurott is almost what I wanted the regular one to be. He never needed to be Dewott but bigger, but just needed something extra, and the stats are more logical.

Go on, count how many of the 10 starter sets we have include a Fighting type.
The crocodile is better than the pig. The water and grass starters are better in Unova.
Gen 1: cool if a bit generic monsters. Venusaur is the most unique one
Gen 2: Terrible fischer price toys
Gen 3: souless tryhard "cool" digimon
Gen 4: the best starters
Gen 5: the second best starters
Gen 6 - 8: utter shit. Not a single good design.
Gen 9: duck is cool looking just dances and walks too gayly. Other two are decent
Quaxly's final evo is pretty cool if you understand the culture of the region Paldea is based on. Fire Croc looks pretty cool. Though his purple and yellow should have been used somewhere else on the body. Cat wizard is a cat wizard. Gen 9 has pretty solid starters. Don't get why they are being compared to the Random ass gen 5 starters that have nothing to do with the region they are from.

When it comes to Unova, the issue for me will always be the typing/stats. Samurott deserved part fighting (or anything really), and Emboar could've stood out with something else like steel (Chinese Ding pottery)
Hisuian Samurott is almost what I wanted the regular one to be. He never needed to be Dewott but bigger, but just needed something extra, and the stats are more logical.
Gen 5. The new starter final evos are actually cool or fun, gen 5's starters have always been dogshit and were the first ones I boxed ASAP.
Gen 8
The duck is so damn creepy when it follows you, there's nothing worse than that.
emboar is still the worst fire starter to me.
I like the look of the fire and grass starters this gen, water is alright but I thought it would look more duck like.
