What would you want to see in a good ol' race-and-class d20 fantasy game's core rules, anon? A more interesting action economy? A magic system that isn't the same ol' faux-Vancian crap?

overhaul the experience points and level up system. i think most sane people adopted milestone advancements, so it would be cool to have more milestones far more quickly. i hear that shadows of demon lord has three tiers of paths that go to level 10, that seems pretty interesting. maybe it could go to 50 and only take twice as long or something?

How about having multi-part levels? Class advance, general advance, skill advance, next level, etc.

Retvrn to 3.5 but with the lessons learned from 5e

Smaller numbers? More condensed feat chains? No explicit move action?

yeah bonuses and stuff but far more quickly, the same way you would be awarded experience points in early D&D for making clever choices, and the way 5e awards inspiration now. players should get bonuses and upgrades instead of an arbitrary number they save until it matters.

        >Smaller numbers?
Eh, maybe? I like being able to get absurdly good at something.
        >More condensed feat chains?
        Absolutely.
        >No explicit move action?
        Not sure honestly.

Along these lines, are there any games you guys would recommend as a replacement? My friends are finally talking about trying new RPG’s due to the recent drama and I’ve been sick of 5e for a while now.

I’m up for general recommendations or even fan made content at this point that changes up the rules. Really anything to shake things up

check out Heart: The City Beneath, you ever seen the anime Made in Abyss? this RPG is basically that show, where there's an abnormality beneath the world a grand mystery and the world's economy revolves around making use of this mysterious force of nature

That both look and sounds very interesting, gonna read more into it. I’ve got one person in my friend group who’s really into that anime so I’m sure he’d be down. (I’m a bit of a weenie with my entertainment, so I’m usually only into slice of life’s and comedies)

How similar or different do you want to be? Aside from the mechanics, do you want the same general vibe? (Generic medieval Europe with a pretty big amount of magic).

It can be similar or wildly different so long as it’s interesting and fun. I’m just looking for a change of pace. I personally like my stuff to be more challenging no matter what it is, but I’m not sure how the rest of them feel. I guess the more interesting the setting the better. I’ve never felt terribly engaged by the settings DnD provides and have a hard time caring about the lore so I’ll just make some comic relief character and play along. The mechanics are fun enough, but I’m fine with changing it all up. Really any suggestions are good suggestions at this point.

Made into Abyss is kind of like the dark souls of slice of life, i'm sure you would fit right in. the anime feels like it wants to be a game.

It’s right on the edge. It has enough gore and gnarly stuff happening to kid characters that it just filters me (gotta lot of kiddos in my life now so I’ve become a bit sensitive to that), but I also love the art direction, setting, and the OST’s incredible. Mind you I don’t mind a bit of edge or darker settings in this sorta thing, but when it comes to personal entertainment I enjoy in my rare moments of alone time, it’s about as vanilla as it comes.

I want all characters to have a pool of fatigue points that regenerates between battles, or during one battles. Mages cast from this, but non-mages also use it for strenuous exertion. Armor gives higher fatigue consumption.

Vancian magic wasn't even good in Dying Earth, and it's even worse in games. It's long tradition makes it easily the worst thing in DnD 1e.

What about the D&D Next playtest concept of characters having a per-round stamina resource?

    >using the time to scramble around and make their own d20 games
It's fricking unreal how unimaginative people who play games all day are. They'd rather rub their own palms off with a cheese grater than let go of d20

To be fair, it happened with PbtA too.
And you can't go do that with, say, Genesys, because Genesys already exists.
d100 just isn't as popular, either, excepting CoC.

Ditch treature. "Stuff" doesn't interest me.

Ditch level-doled abilities. Give us points to spend and let us save up if we want something cool early.

Stop making all the race choices look like humans. Including the humans.

Treasure and mundane items have an important mechanical role, though.

I'd want something like Dark Heresy or Deathwatch, where the class was a starting package, and tables of advancement, with tiers so you can actually make your fighter mechanically different from Steve's fighter purely because you chose to go a different way with your xp.

Do you like the DH and Deathwatch style class tables more, or the more general system used in Only War where your class goes even further to just determining which talents you get cheaper?
