You're following steps someone else laid out for you with zero intent on deviation. I'd say this deviation is kind of what sets computer games apart as a medium is this intention for deviation specifically, it's what makes it a mechanically different activity from reading, watching, listening, etc. If a designer is just giving you a series of steps to strictly adhere to, it might as well be a picture book, or like a real book if the game is graphically abstract enough to engage your imagination to fill in the gaps.
I true computer gaming equivalent to cheevohz would be goals the player sets for themselves, which we've been able to do for decades, no bleeps or bloops or social comparison cancer required.

games already tell you what to do at all times, they all give implicit and explicit goals for every single second of gameplay. What's the difference between an in game character saying "we need to defeat the demon overlord" and an achievement saying "complete chapter 12'

Are you moronic or just being purposely obtuse? Cheevos already have usually creative and challenging list, there is a community around hunting them, they serve as a comparison tool to other players, they serve as a record/log of games you played and when and how much you completed, they give completion statistics for games and rarity metrics for difficult achievements, and at least for Xbox, PS4/PS5, and certain Steam lists they can't be cheated without having obviously cheated timestamps.

It's insane how just because Nintendo is so fricking lazy that they STILL REFUSE to add achievements, that their rabid fanbase will instead sit here and shit on achievements just to defend Nintendo being lazy pieces of shit.

reminds me of the reddit quest queues in Classic WoW, what a joke

That's what I get when I play a game. A sense of achievement, rather than an artificial one found in a mountain.

you get a sense of achievement in games regardless of whether or not you get a pop-up, ding sound and a stupid achievement name like 'The Bigger They Are...' when killing a giant boss

queuing is a better system than all ganging up on the spot like monkeys because it's less of a gamble, you might get the tag early or not at all so it's a middle ground
enlightened gamers simply left the starter zone to go grind since it's not like you need to do the quests to unlock later ones and you'll get more exp killing random scorps than waiting 45 mins in queue for a 300 turn-in

I think it's okay if a game has ingame achievements like Kirby Air Ride had, you did a certain thing and unlocked new cool stuff.

But if a game has them just for the sake of it, it sucks.
If you get achievements for booting up the game, dying, picking up the first power up and shit like that it becomes super lame.

I think it can be fun to achievement hunt in games I like. It gives you an excuse to do alternative play styles and goals. CK2 and 3 are good examples. No one would play as like 90% of those countries without achievements tied to them.

I like going for achievements/trophies because

      Pretty much this.
Also all my friends play goyslop so when playing games by myself I feel as though I've got my money's worth if I get all the trophies. It stops me purchasing a new game every week and I feel a sense of accomplishment looking at all the 100% on my list. I appreciate where people are coming from in this thread, they are completely and utterly pointless, but unlike most of this board I have achieved things in real life so it's neither here nor there if I choose to do achievements when playing. To be honest I can't really imagine me playing games if I didn't have a list of tasks to complete within them. Who really cares either way, they're optional for a reason

Some people will stop playing a game they like when they max out the battle pass or reach max level and get no rewards for the time they put in even if they like the gameplay. At least I think that's what anon means.

people who won't play a game if there isn't some reward for it. like, they wouldn't like playing a mario game because there's no leveling up or battlepass or cosmetics or whatever.

Well I don't refuse to play games where you can't lvl up / unlock things etc.

But unlocking extras is always a plus no?
Unlocking new costumes, items, abilities and bonus levels was always great in older titles, but the grinding in new games is a bit too much, often feels like a second job.

            Anonymous

yeah there's nothing wrong with having it as a feature of a game (like achievements). there's just a subset of people where that's the main draw and the actual game is secondary. like you'll see people complain about not having a 'reason' to play a game, like the fun doesn't come from playing but rather unlocking stuff. for example this is a common complaint I've seen against sekiro- why should I play the game when my character doesn't get new equipment or levels? that type of player doesn't enjoy playing the game, they enjoy getting stuff, and playing the game is just a means to that end.

personally I don't give a shit, everyone enjoys things differently, it's just an alien mindset to me, like how some people really enjoy idle games or gacha.

I get that a lot more than cheevo people.
If you have nothing new to unlock, no new goals, no new inputs you can get other than "play game to play game" then you're essentially over with it. Just move on. Say you beat Super Mario. You finished all the levels, and so, finished it's progression. You're done homie, go play something else. What actually sounds autistic to me is to keep playing the same game forever where nothing new happens.

see I don't get this take at all. people will rewatch shows, movies, listen to the same song, read the same book, etc, multiple times because it's impossible to completely 'use up' a piece of media like that

but for some reason video games are just super special and unique? like you can't just enjoy a game for it's own sake?

              Anonymous

Some people don't even listen to the same song twice. Crazy as it seems to me, I can believe it.

              Anonymous

The difference is time dedication and interactivity. First one is self-explanatory, the second is a matter of action repetition. Listening to a song is five minutes of zero commitment. Replaying a video game is dozens of hours of 100% attention commitment. And on top of experience being the same every time, more importantly your input is the same every time. Interactivity is such an important part of what makes the game appealing, the feedback depending on your actions, that lack of diversity in player actions and games' reactions to them can lead to boredom. That said people do replay games, some fairly often. It simply depends on a person.

                >And playing a game can be a 10% commitment.
Games that require 10% attention commitment are meant to be repetitive and simplistic. Most people put something in the background when they're grinding, be it single-player or multiplayer, the games or parts of the game that are meant to be work-like. And most people split their attention simply because it's too boring otherwise.

I was generally too shit at games to get everything but if I liked a game enough I would go for any achievement I could get, even if it was something stupid. And some of you may recall that Halo 3 had armor unlocks tied to achievement progress, so that got me even more into it. I actually remember getting kind of pissed that NUNS1 didn't have any trophies, but I think part of that might have been misdirected anger over the game being not nearly as good as the PS2 Ultimate Ninjas.

These days I don't really think about them at all except when they pop up and I'm like "oh okay" and then I immediately forget about them.

I usually just like to play games to beat them, but cheevos give you good goals in some of them -- when they're reasonable. Arcade games, for a great example, things in which you're playing for score or extra seconds of survival. Since I don't typical play score attack against people, it definitely adds to the game in those cases.

It's a dopamine rush for completionists. You devise a nonsense system for them with no real content but give them buttons for "completing" a thing you'd either normally do anyway or is just stupid busywork that nobody would otherwise do.

This triggers their addictive personality traits and suddenly they want more of your amazing buttons, so they can feel good about having all your buttons.

Cheevos are exactly as stupid as they sound.

I agree that 9 times out of 10 achievements are dogshit and lazily implemented. Something like in FF8 where it wants you to perform 10k fights or some shit is lame and adds nothing. But the same game also has an achievement to beat the game without leveling. Dragon's Dogma is another good example with the Speedrun achievement. They should be challenges to complete, optional outside the game badges that don't cut you off from content, that's it. I can get disliking how achievements are done but disliking them outright is odd to me.

definitions are arbitrary, since they come from different source and use ambiguous language.

if you wanna argue within the scope of the anglosphere, water isn't food because we have to different verbs for them. you can't eat water and you can't drink food. i'm pretty sure this is true in 99% of other languages

No, it isn't. Maybe you just don't understand. Water has no nutritional value. You will never gain weight, muscle or fat if you only take in water (in fact, you will die eventually). If you can't grasp this basic fact of life then there's nothing more I can say.

The fact that you need water to survive does not change the fact it carries no nutritional value. You need air to breathe, are you going to start saying air is nutritious too?

Being dehydrated makes all of the systems in your body work harder and less efficiently. If you have access to clean water then you should be drinking a lot of it every day to stay hydrated and clear out your bodily wastes.

I have no idea why the tuck you’d even try to argue against the health benefits of water. Might as well argue that breathing is actually counter-productive to the strength of your lungs.

By that logic you’re doing yourself a disservice by attempting to see with eyes that aren’t blind and hear with ears that aren’t deaf. Your muscles only get stronger because their cells are specialized to increase in size in proportion to the amount of work that they are routinely forced to undertake. Your entire body isn’t a gigantic muscle; most parts of it are better off not being overworked for no good reason. It’s like arguing that drinking 30 beers a day is good for you liver because it’ll be constantly working overtime.

the original argument was that water was seen as food and someone said it isn't because it isn't nutritious, but it is. People don't udnerstand what a nutrient is, they think it's something like pure consumption of micro nutrients when that's not it, they only put their value of how nutritious something is or isn't by the nutritional info on the back of a package. Water may not have any macro nutrients but it's sitll nutritious because it fits the definition of what a nutrient is.

I never said oxygen was food, either. I even said that was something entirely different but you seemed to miss this. Learn how to read before talking to people, you would do yourself a really big favor with that.

Problem with bottled water is the plastic they use leeches in the water (aggravated a ton if the cases sit in hot temperatures which they often do) which increases your estrogen also. From what I've read, if you want to be a water purist you get a well and make sure all your plumbing is copper (but that doesn't solve the problem of the residual microplastics and estrogen that stays in the water even after it comes back down as rain - there is no realistic solution to this and shows that modernity has become terminal). If that's not feasible, second best is you get those watercoolers that have the big jugs on top. The plastic they use for those jugs is different from the one for normal water bottles, it's a lot thicker and leeches way less into the water.

Estrogen isn’t poison you gigantic moron, your body literally produces more estrogen every day than you can ever hope to drink from a lifetime of bottle water and “Microplastics” kek. Whatever form of it you happen to consume through water will most likely get destroyed in your stomach in any case.

No, anon. If I have low testosterone levels it’s most likely from genetics, drug abuse, and a mostly sedentary, depressive lifestyle. Even then, having “low testosterone” is significantly less detrimental to your body as a whole than being chronically dehydrated, which will lead to a shit ton of very serious and very crippling pathologies that will make you life infinitely more miserable than not constantly being in a horny, aggressive state.

None of this even matters because there’s no fricking way in hell that you can possibly consume enough estrogen through bottled water for it to cause a significant hormonal imbalance. It’s positively insane to think so.

I knew some midwit was gonna bring up the fact that water has trace amounts of micro-nutriments. Try feeding a nation only on water, see how far that gets you. If you drink 20 gallons a day forever you will lose weight until the point where your body dies because it has withered away. So it's not food.
You could however feed a nation on wheat and beer (liquid wheat). It wouldn't give you a healthy population, but they would survive.

Is oxygen nutrition therefore food too then? Because you need it just as much as you need water.

they may enjoy the game, but not care about progressing the story. think about something like Skyrim. how many people just wander around and enjoyed themselves without following the yellow brick road of story progression?

          Anonymous

That works for a game like Skyrim, but the post I replied to was about RDR2, which has a similar open world appeal, but Skyrim never had story discussion like RDR2 has still today. That indicates story is a broad appeal for the game, and if that's true, then why did almost no one actually finish it?

I like them because they 1) give me an idea of how much of the game’s content I’ve explored and 2) provide official, documented proof that I’m better and more knowledgeable than you at the game.

I've never seen an article or stat showing that, however we can see that achievement-oriented things (cheap dopamine shit) have been increasingly implemented in games by and large over the last 20 years. They don't put that shit in games for just no reason, and I've never heard an actual game designer, like Warren Spector or John Romero, say that yeah I think a player making numbers go up constantly is the best kind of game I can make.
Odds are achievements were explicitly created for the cynical purpose of player retention in an increasingly costly vidya industry.

        isn't that all rpgs forever?

          Anonymous

That's been an element, but well-liked RPGs had an end. And some were RPGs simply because they couldn't program actual game mechanics like shooting in System Shock 2, from Ken Levine himself. The impact that those XP systems have had are the slew of live service games over the last few years that are made from the ground up to drip feed content to players indefinitely until it's no longer profitable, and the easiest content to churn out without depending on creativity (which is finite) are systems the player feeds into that are ultimately in the service of making numbers go up, which can be reiterated infinitely.
How many of you find those games satisfying?

Exactly this. Its just really fun and satisfying mastering the game and doing literally everything possible. But the fact that I didn't have a ton of games growing up definitely contributed to me doing it. I only got games on Christmas and Birthdays so I needed to wring every piece of entertainment out of a game. I still go out of my way to 100% some games even though there's no reward for it but I'm much more selective about it.

This is mostly how I view it, the only bad part is that the 100% achievement gives you a framework of "if I complete all the achievements, I've done 100% of the stuff in the game" when that isn't always true. A lot of games have stuff that you don't get achievements for. If I compare for Elden Ring for example, I had 100 hours and hadn't beaten the game, my friend had 50hours and yet had 100% achievement completion. You don't have to do the majority of the side content in that game to get the 100%.

Gives me something to do besides just beating the game and uninstalling it. For example, M&B Warband had achievements for certain character builds so I'd do shit I wasn't used to like raiding villages as a mounted archer.

Somewhere in the late 2000's the gaming hobby merged with a subgroup of gamblers and degenerates. These are the kinds of people who grind battlepasses for games they hate, dump hundreds of dollars into skins, and obsess over achievements. Good gameplay does not exist to them beyond simple and addicting dopamine spikes to reward their repetitive degenerate behavior. If gaming didn't exist they'd be at the casino or horse races getting drunk and passing out in the bleachers.

I don't really care about S-ranks either. It's nice if it happens, buy I won't dedicate time to it. I generally like the model (or of one) in western shooters like Doom, Max Payne, or FEAR, where it's usually intended for you to get fricked up to a certain degree. It means you don't have to sweat over minor things that genuinely don't have consequences in gameplay.
