Sonic is overated

Sonic has to be the most overrated platformer I've ever played. The game does not reward you for speed. On the contrary it punishes you for it. The only way to actually go significantly fast is by mesmerizing the levels over and over untill you know every twist and turn. It's shitty game design.

Anyone who thinks sonic is on level with Mario in terms of quality is a moron. Mario rewards speed and quick reflexes more than Sonic's slippery loose physics.

    Nintendo was never good

Cope. Classic Nintendo games are still played and beloved today. Look at the sales of any significant Mario or Zelda rerelease. On the other hand sega struggles to get over 500k.

Sega is the one who's never been good. They capitalized on 90s edginess and then got mogged by Sony. If they were of actual quality they'd still be making consoles

Holy shit, the amount of incorrect statements is hard to even keep track of.

-Sega/Sonic games are sure as shit still played and beloved today. Unlike stick-up-their-butt Nintendo, Sega ported many of their classic games to many platforms, many free to play like on iOS. I bet more people play Sonic 2 than Mario World on any given day.

-Sega was bought out in the early 00's by a Pachinko company (Sammy) that didn't respect it as an IP and didn't properly fund games for a long time. This is why everything between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations was pure garbage.

-Sony never had anything to do with Sega anymore than Nintendo did.

-Saturn failed because of price and a focus on 2D games when people stopped caring about 2D. It was still a success in Japan, though. Dreamcast failed because of a backdoor piracy hack that would allow people to burn games and put them straight into a Dreamcast with no modchip and all developers pulled the plug immediately.

          NTA, but he said
          >Sega is the one who's never been good. They capitalized on 90s edginess and then got mogged by Sony [doing the same but better than Sega].

          >mesmerizing the levels

Yep, the levels sure are mesmerizing.

This is why Sonic 2, Generations, and Mania are the only good Sonic games. 1, 3+K, CD (if you play it correctly), etc. don't encourage fast moving gameplay and kill the whole point of Sonic.

Marble Zone was an absolute disaster of a second level in Sonic 1, it should've been near the end of the game and Starlight Zone should've been level 2 instead. Labyrinth Zone should've fricked off entirely.

Actually, Sonic 1 on Game Gear is a better Sonic game than all but Sonic 2 on Genesis, it actually plays like Sonic should and focuses on just being simple and fun instead of slow and tedious.

I do disagree that Mario rewards speed, though, I definitely had a lot of stupid deaths from running too fast.

Mania sucks. First of all, frick outta here with that tryhard tumblr gay shit. Second of all, not retro. And also, I disagree completely with your sentiments: for one, classic in the vein of Sonic 1, 3&K, and CD encourage "pinball-platforming" with occasional speed to emphasize the action and fun.

What are your favorite Mario games, OP? I really like Land 2.

Alternatively, have you tried any SEGA games besides Sonic? There's other ones you might enjoy, like Dynamite Headdy or Gunstar Heroes. Or the Oasis series if you like Zelda

Land 2 is good. Probably 3 and 1. I tried gun star heroes. It was ok.

Check out Aladdin, Vectorman, maybe a bit of Ristar. Genesis has other great games that aren't Sonic. Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion are also good if you want something a little closer to Mario without being a straight clone. The closest thing SEGA ever made was probably Kid Chameleon but it's rarely discussed and maybe not as interesting as other Genesis platformers.

If you just want to go super fast then I guess there's Sonic Advance 2 which came way later but still has a fun cozy atmosphere and a faster-paced gameplay style. Pretty much OP I like both SEGA and Nintendo but I'm open to hearing opinions to see if I can help recommend you better games.

Decelopers of Land 2 spent a load of time trying to make the worlds all approximately equal in difficulty. It's novel but classic linearity is probably superior

Normally I would sage and hide these threads, but I am legitimately curious which Sonic games OP has played. 2 and CD for instance are completely different in terms of design, and the Game Gear titles (especially 1) are an entirely different beast. There's also games like 3D Blast that focus more on exploration than going fast

        OK, you do you.

They still make "HECKING HIT THE TURBO BOOST!" racing games every once in a while, but they're kind of boring and pointless compared to playing a sim that actually teaches you to drive properly. It's been done, just play one that already exists, there's hundreds if not thousands.

The point is there's nothing new to add, there are so goddamn many arcade racers already that every permutation is done to death.

Even sim racers are pretty dead now, only Gran Turismo and Forza really exist as mainstream AAA racing games anymore. Occasionally a rally game or something will come into the mix.

Then you have more niche ones like Assetto Corsa, which is mostly just a platform for mod cars/tracks, iRacing which is where insufferable homosexuals congregate to pretend race with bad physics, Project CARS which is pretty much dead despite having an almost perfect experience with PC 2, and "literally who cares" Automobilista 2 and rFactor 2.

Gran Turismo is a racing game. Sonic is not. That's kind of the whole problem. Why bother putting in enemies, items, platforming and secrets (the stuff that makes a platformer fun) if the only point is to memorise a route and miss 90% of it? If I wanted to get better at time trials I'd, you know, play a racing game.

I just like the 8-bit Sonic 1 because the level progression is way better than 16-bit Sonic 1. In the 16-bit game, you go from a super easy, super fast, super fun 1st world and then you're plunged into a super slow, annoying, tedious, absolute piece of shit. The level order makes no fricking sense in Sonic 1 for Genesis.

Please stop making this thread all the time homosexual OP, I'm sorry your mongoloid reflexes are trash but most people don't need to memorize every part of the level to go fast, they just press down sometimes. Mario has no equivalent satisfaction for pressing down and letting physics bowl you through problems until you need to take control again and that's why it will never be as good.
Mario doesn't "reward" speed, it gives you simpler levels with basically a single path through them, and from 3 on, it "punishes" you for doing proper platforming instead of just flying over everything and generally using powers as a crutch.

  26. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I have never seen a good argument against Sonic games that don't start from marketing induced brainrot that the game must 'reward' running forward like a moron and it punishing you for this is bad when this is literally not a standard applied to any other platformer. Almost every other platformer will also punish you for running like a moron and refusing to do platforming, including Mario.

There's a very specific type of brainrot when it comes to morons discussing Sonic, like they literally cannot fathom that it might actually be a platformer and it MUST be about going fast holding right at all times because that's what the funny internet memes told them.

And EVEN THEN the modern decomps allow for widescreen so you CAN actually see far ahead and play like that if you're good enough and just react to things so that's not even a real argument anymore (if it ever was)

Varied movesets among the characters are fun, though, especially Amy's being really unique among the four.
