There's an argument to be made that Sonic 1 wasn't all that good, as it's easily the weakest of the them, but 2 and 3&K are far and away considered great classics. Constantly. He's been updating it obsessively for years. And he kept (intentionally) breaking & Knuckles compatibility, so the & Knuckles guy gave up and implemented his own tweaks.
So what's the definitive mod list for CD? What I have now works for me but it'll probably get outdated with mods that improve the game and such
The version that gets passed around in the Mega is the best version, sadly. You either lose Knuckles for a lot of hyper specific, niche fixes or you download the modern & Knuckles version for broader mod compatibility and changes that make it a bit less faithful to the SCD version.

It's the only good moveset. Anything that gives her a spindash or spin jump sucks. She should have a hammer swing dash attack like in Rayman Origins/ Legends tho. Could gain her speed and kill enemies and maybe bounce off walls if you swing in the air.
Like I said, I think the 3K moveset is reasonable. Superstars isn't what I want but it seems fine. The three things I think Amy really needs in a moveset are

Sonic was always good but it was also really flawed and inherently more complex than Mario which is so dead simple it's far easier not to fuck up.
A major issue with Sonic has always been its length. As the vidya industry and technology grew so were expectations of content. Longer and longer games were in demand and fluffing 1-2 hours games by making them stupidly hard was no longer seen as acceptable especially for wider audiences.
For stuff like Mario this shit wasn't hard to solve: Larger worlds and levels. But for Sonic this was kinda a massive issue whose whole gimick was speedrunning the games as fast as you can. It wasn't as easy as just "make longer levels" or "make more" since making this stuff in 3D would now cost more timer and money to boot. So a lot of the struggle and thinking came around how to extend the length of these games while not immideatly blowing their budgets.
this is ultimately what led to so many questionable decisions from alternative game modes that played nothing like Sonic in the Adventure series to having the characters play the whole game again but as diffrent characters in Heroes.
Then the Dark Age happened because SEGA realized they'd make tons of cash no matter how good or bad Sonic is and stopped giving a shit on giving Sonic Team any resources plus Sonic Team themselves just throwing retarded shit at the wall in hopes something works to boot.

I don't really care for S1F's Advancesque moveset for Amy. It's really nothing like Advance 1 except that Amy can't roll or spin jump. Advance Amy needs two buttons to work properly.
The developer of this port must be a waifufag because Amy is very OP in it.
Superstars really should've picked up where Advance 1/2 left off and made use of more buttons on the controller to expand character movesets. The only reason the games are just one button games is because of Naka's autism for extremely simple control schemes. Give knuckles some basic combat, gives tails some gadgets etc...

They're gimmicks that either should have been in a character's moveset to begin with or are completely ignorable that it makes them seem completely pointless
Because those options are just moves some other character should have, that's the entire point of multiple characters in classic Sonic games. You give a character something unique to them with the same core gameplay and you've got a Sonic game. It's not thay hard and shouldn't need to be complicated just to add "options".
Superstars does have more buttons for the emerald abilities. The characters even have abilities like a tail swipe for Tails, a punch for Knuckles, etc, although they're locked behind one of the emeralds for some reason. Hopefully they'll have them by default for one of Superstars's inevitable sequels.

Did anyone even use the extra attacks in the Advance trilogy (excluding Amy for obvious reasons)? None of them served any purpose that you can't get from basic jumping or rolling.
You can use the attacks, especially Sonic's somersault, to quickly come to a complete stop for a spin dash. Tails and Knuckles' attacks are helpful in some boss fights in Advance 1 and 2.
