Oh boy the arms race of buying up literally anything not nailed down is really ramping up. Ontop of the existing cash on hand for stuff, they could definitely get a large publisher like S-E or Capcom.

      Who?
And Sony started this by using it's market cap to pay Japanese devs to explicitly keep games of their primary competitor's platform. Now people like you are complaining when MS attempts to outright buy an American dev, all the while begging Sony to do the same with Square and Capcom. You people are pathetic and have no argumentative high ground.

Its more Microsoft started this by fricking up so bad with the Xbone, it made Sony's frick up with the PS3 not a big deal. Microsoft didn't utilize their leverage in the 360 era at all, and some of the stuff they paid for exclusively didn't pan out well just like it isn't currently.

It's because of their digital services like PS plus and sony music, also the fact that most of the hit shows you watch on streaming services are developed by Sony and then licensed out, and they're making a fricking gorillion dollars pitting all the streaming services against each other.

Try late 2000s. Still one of the absolute worst set of headphones I've ever owned were Sony. Turned up to 100% volume I could barely hear it, get shouted at to turn my music down, pull them off, and the noise coming out of them is louder than when they were on my head. The Games Division is not going to do well long term. I can tell you that based on the fact a recession is on the way and also the bills are being squeezed tighter with inflation. Plus competition from Nintendo and Steam and you also have the fact Microsoft is selling Gamepass along with gaining huge buyouts with AKB it's not going to end up being that way overall. Also keep in mind people are paying 10$ more for games which is making it look good as a performer but it is an illusion trick.

Sony spent the last gen buying up exclusive rights to games, so MS countered by buying up publishers. Do you really think Sony has a chance to outbid MS, or even Tencent? And with them going all out trying to make sure the Activision deal gets blocked, too? MS would do the same thing, but on a much bigger scale.

This is true, and because Sony did not sign the deal due to Jim Ryan not signing the 10 year contract Nintendo, Steam and other cloud platforms signed they are out of luck once the purchase goes through. So this means Sony is out of anti-competition options and anti-consumer options. Which means COD will be feature parity on ALL platforms all exclusive maps will be available on all platforms, except for Sony.

Sony is signing it's death warrant by abandoning it's creative divisions in favor of cinema and F2P, those two things are not consistent money makers and can die at anytime and have a high risk of dooming a company if they flop badly. Destiny 2 players are already complaining about having to pay an extra 10$ on top of the basic battle passes and have complained about a lack of content and the recent stuff has been luckluster. Users are asking if it's worth their time and that number is not going to stay up if things keep going the way they are. I give it a few years before the honeymoon phase is over.

lol this has to be trolling no one is this fricking moronic. Number one Sqaure Enix is too much money to buy and they waste too much money to even consider buying them in the 1st place too much risk. Kadokawa is a giant publisher of Light Novels and various anime(Think of Ghost In The Shell, Paprika etc), they are too big for Sony to even purchase, this is why Sony made indirect deals with Kadokawa on Elden Ring because Kadokawa owns Fromsoftware.

        Anonymous

Kadokawa's market cap is 3.3 billion. Lets say you pay 2.5-3 times, that is well within Sony's range. S-E is also in the range because of the Western divisions being so fricked they had to sell them off to cover debt and a few flops like Forspoken will make people more eager to sell. Obviously it would still cost probably near 15 billion for them

With Kadokawa though, people like Tencent have more shares in them currently than Sony so its just about buying all the people out.

Does not matter if it's within their range, Kadokawa would have to agree and they will not do so. Neither will Shueisha who holds the WSJ library with Naruto, DBZ, MHA etc.
          > S-E is also in the range because of the Western divisions being so fricked they had to sell them off to cover debt and a few flops like Forspoken will make people more eager to sell. Obviously it would still cost probably near 15 billion for them
Funny thing is Forspoken did not flop as much as Redfall did, it just is not a high seller. Forspoken is in the 40th on the sales chart. So it's not a massive flop on the scale you are saying it is. Also Square Enix owns far too many branchs too much merchandise and overall is a headache for any executive to take on.

I think Forspoken budget vs sales means its a massive flop, they thought Rise of the Tomb Raider's 5m+ was a flop. Forspoken had 2 years of trailers, long build up etc.
            >too many branches
All of which Sony is in already. Sony has Sony Music obviously, but also own Aniplex, CR and Funimation. They are hands deep in the anime/manga business and bolstering it with more manga/LNs is a boon. Especially if after Western comics, Hollywood tries to milk anime/manga more which goes into using them for Sony Pictures.

Does not matter what you THINK if it's a flop, commercially it is a flop, but sales wise it did good enough to make it's money back and they also had ESG money for it. Which is sort of obvious.
              >All of which Sony is in already. Sony has Sony Music obviously, but also own Aniplex, CR and Funimation. Especially if after Western comics, Hollywood tries to milk anime/manga more which goes into using them for Sony Pictures.
This is why the FTC and others will not let it go through, it puts too much of an advantage and a monopoly in Sony's court for Anime and Manga. Also having Square Enix will just make it harder overall because of the fact if they rake in debt Sony is going to have to absorb it which they will because of how badly managed Square Enix is. Also it's not likely any of these theories of yours will happen because of the fact they all know Sony is no longer a Japanese company but an American one currently. Japanese do not wish to associate with the Western mindset.

Yes it did but it was always going to happen even after XV came out and they had not worked on anything for 4 years straight. It makes sense to consolidate them in the Square Enix 1st party division than as an outside Western division.

but what about bamco? why wouldn't they buy them? It makes the most logical sense, both Dark Souls and Elden Ring are bamco IPs
They've been the ones supporting the rise of From, it's only logical they'd have the biggest interest in buying them

It is a major seller but not the only one, Nintendo relies on AA and Indies to move it's consoles and makes deals with smaller companies nowadays. Also they have their own exclusive library to keep themselves afloat forever. Nintendo has so much fricking money they can stay making consoles for the next 50 years, but with how amazing their Switch success story has been better make it another 25 plus on top of that.

Sony doesn't have a choice. M$ pushed this by buying up a major development studio (that ALREADY merged with another big development studio), and the only way to make more video games is by having more devs to make them. Sony was fine paying 3rd party studios to do it while still allowing them to remain independently owned (which any of the big 3 could also do), but M$ chose to flat out buy the studios full stop, meaning no one is allowed to make a deal with them like that anymore. So the only options is to do the same, because that is the new standard that is set to compete, or you die off not adapting.

Except Sony don't have the capitial for an arms race. They overpaid for Bungie. People are delusional if they think they can just buy up companies for their worth on paper. If these companies wanted to sell MS wouldn't have bought Activision. Bungie stated they were tried to sell themselves to MS and they refused because they only had one IP and asked for too much.

Technically no, but Sony got the FTC to official declare Nintendo doesn't count while trying to stop the Activision deal, and now that that they don't Sony has a borderline monopoly in some countries and are currently getting investigated over it.

Only the FTC used that. Telling Japan, who themselves used Switch/Nintendo in their examples, to use an American definition of the market is moronic.

It's only really America investigating them for it if it helps. It's still really funny that Sony's get slapped for this over something they didn't have any need to be involved in in the first place.

moron, ms spent almost that much on zenimax already, never mind trying to buy $69b worth of activision. $10b isn't a groundbreaking purchase at all since ms showed their hand. they basically signaled that sony HAS to start making these kinds of acquisitions in order to stay in the game. they wouldn't be looking at these options otherwise, in any other circumstance this would be a shitty use of their money.

              >$10b isn't a groundbreaking purchase at all
But this is what you don't understand. MS is not on the same level as Sony. Sony can't afford to spend this kind of money on random studios. This is some kind of fever dream of snoys thinking Sony has ANY chance to one up MS with acquisitions. The big boys are MS, Google, Amazon, Meta and Apple. That is it. Everyone else is poorgay. Just because MS "showed their hand" it doesn't mean you have an ace in the hole. This isn't the console exclusivity space where Sony can compete. This is straight up corporate business where the house (MS) will always win.

Not fricking happening. Square Enix is too much of a risk and everyone who is a Sony Pony will try spinning this off like they can handle Square Enix despite not really handling their other stuff that well. Realize this Square Enix has a Manga division, owns a magazine division, a music division and on top of that owns an MMORPG division, Square Enix constantly runs itself into the red constantly and it is a tumultuous company always with horrible management. Capcom would be a terrible idea because Capcom despite it's recent successes has no real long term viable IP's other than it's legacy ones with Resident Evil and Street Fighter which it keeps reviving. They need new IP's but then it always dies like Dead Rising or Lost Planet. They do not have anything worth their salt and are overvalued.

      >this Square Enix has a Manga division, owns a magazine division, a music division
Sounds like it lines literally right up Sony's alley. Sony Music is huge, they own Aniplex, they own Crunchyroll and Funimation. Its the same shit with Kadokawa, all the markets S-E and Kadokawa are in Sony has their hands in. Kadokawa has some real estate IIRC so maybe not that part.

They are not really blockbusters as much as you think it is, that is an illusion you have sold yourself and Capcom believes in it wholesale. Resident Evil is not really a true long term IP because what can they do after the remakes to make Resident Evil viable again? 7 was a fricking flop, 8 was nothing, the Resident Evil series has no real understanding of it's identity, then you have Street Fighter which yes you can say SF5 was succesful sales wise, but commercially? Not that well received they and the FGC are chasing Esports money and sanitizing the product to where it is leaving their hardcore buyers behind and it looks like SF6 has not learned from this. It does not look good from the outside, but if you want to buy into your own hype go ahead lol.

S-E makes no sense anyway, Sony gets every single game they want as an exclusive. They said no FF7R on Xbox ever and S-E did it. No other publisher would have done this with a high profile, casual friendly release.

  25. 10 months ago

Sony isn’t going to try and buy a big publisher, because the second they try that publisher is going to shop around their offer and Microsoft is going to beat it.

The way Sony and MS approach acquisitions is totally different. MS is more or less forced to acquire devs because the gap in marketshare means they get fricked over in any attempt to negotiate exclusivity, whereas with an acquisition they pay the same amount as anyone else. Sony gets exclusivity for much cheaper (especially if they’re only paying to exclude Xbox rather than full platform exclusivity), so the only reason they’d even need to buy studios is to prevent MS from buying them first.
