Sure they can. They have some of the best graphics engineers in the industry and created the architecture with many of those same people still there. If hobbyists can create an emulator that runs on lower end computers than the PS5 why do you think Sony can't?

This. Microsoft's backwards compatibility goes a long way, the 360 could emulate the OG Xbox despite the fact that the two consoles have nothing to do with each other architecturally (and it's not a 1:1 affair), meanwhile every single post-launch PS3 which didn't have the PS2 guts was still capable of emulating PS2 games, but the feature was turned off when it comes to discs so that Sony could sell them on PSN.

To be fair, backwards compatibility took a year to MS to get it ready, using the best engineers they had of the whole company.
Probably the major issue is optimizing the emulating process to prevent something like RDR running at 30 at best on a high end computer.

Also worth noting the DirectX Box is literally built around be easy to port from and to PC and thus has always had very traditional structure which makes backwards compat extremely easy. The PS3 was stolen alien tech premised on sumerian base 17 quantum intercourse and most developers could barely get games to work on it back then.

The list of company made emulators that are better or even as good as fan emulators is transparent levels of thin. Maybe they could but each Playstation was wildly different and each Xbox was basically an older PC at its release.

Though I would suspect its more to get things like Demon Souls remakes to sell a PS5 by not emulating it, where as Xbox already knew nobody with access to a GPU was buying it. Sony is starting to know this as well because 3 games isn't going to push a console and the emulation group is patient.

Engineers are expensive though. They COULD hire people to get it running but there would have to be a proper incentive. PS Classics might finally be the push they need to start staffing up but I dont know they might just be lazy and keep using the cloud.

i'd love to be able to play some older ps3 games that i missed out on but realistically it's probably not gonna happen simply due to low demand. just have to use rpcs3

On Sony's side Jim Ryan is a moron.
            >“When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” says Ryan. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”
            https://time.com/4804768/playstation-4-ps4-pro-psvr-sales/

On Microsoft's side they've published data about BC a couple times or had data compiled.
            >Our analysis used a third-party API to randomly sample usage data from nearly one million active Xbox One Gamertags over a period of nearly five months starting last September (read the introductory piece for much more about the data and methodology). In the end, only about 1.5 percent of the more than 1.65 billion minutes of Xbox One usage time we tracked was spent on the 300+ backward-compatible Xbox 360 games, in aggregate. That translates to an average of just 23.9 minutes per sampled active Xbox One user spent on Xbox 360 games out of 1,526 average minutes of Xbox One usage during the sampling period.
            >The company said in late 2015 that Xbox One users had spent 9 million hours playing Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One in the feature's first month or so of availability. That may sound like a big number, but it averages out to just a few minutes of playtime for each of the estimated 19 million or so Xbox One owners around at the time. And that was when the feature was brand new and attracting a surge of initial interest.

Why? The PS3 has reliable emulation on PC. Hell, PS3 emulation on PC is better than PS2 emulation. The only reason the PS3 emulator seems less reliable is that RPCS3 classifies games as playable only if they are completable without performance issues or errors, while PCSX2 classifies games as playable if you can reach the end of a game no matter how many errors, hacks, cheats, or version swapping is required. Despite this, Sony released a PS2 emulator that was even less reliable than PCSX2.

So why can't they release their own PS3 emulator, since they already exist and at a higher quality than emulators of their other platforms?

They CANT. No emulator can capture the true complexity of the CELL, the most complex piece of technology this world had ever seen! so complex infact that sony was afraid of terrorists and millitary abusing it!
    >Snoys actually fell for this at one time

  23. 2 years ago

The PS3s Cell Architecture makes it difficult. The thing is Sony can absolutely afford to make PS3 fully backwards compatible but I'm guessing it's super expensive to do all that. They also might think people use it as much to justify the cost. However I think it's worth it. For example they could make PS5 Pro backwards compatible with all generations of PlayStation and have the PS5 Slim replace the OG PS5 model. That way people who don't care about PS3 games can get the cheaper model.

There's also the fact that throughout it's life, the 360 is really the only odd one out architecture-wise for the Xbox family, and even then, it was still powered by a Windows-ish kernel that's been tweaked and skullfricked with each revision, just like a real Windows kernel. Porting games is mostly a matter of if there's interest and source code, and sometimes if there isn't. After dealing with compatibility and reworking everything to actually run on the newer console, it's also a matter of making it run like UWP things on 10, as opposed to launching an xbe/xex. Pre-PS4 Sony consoles on the other hand attempted to reinvent the wheel every launch, and was forced to emulate for whatever they couldn't make Bluepoint bruteforce. On the PS4 and onward, there's no chance in Hell of emulation on that level with that hardware, and even the PS3 was pushing it with PS2 emulation that was varying degrees of bad depending on if it was hardware or software

The PS3 forced devs to make do with Cell's wimpy SPU's, which is also what inflated it's core count in marketing. This is a lot to ask for when there's only one normal thread to work with, and it didn't help that they went with fricking Rambus for RAM, so you've got an iffy Power setup and slow RAM working against you. The target spec has to be 100% PS3 in terms of low-level optimization shit and target the SPU's specifically, as seen in RPCS3 development highlighting MGS4 is squeezing everything it can onto the SPU's. Even if you have the source, porting it to x86-64 means development will mostly involve remaking the engine, and that means dealing with the fricking SPU's

Knowing Konami, they don't have the source anymore, and nobody involved would wanna deal with the legal aspects of the multiple licensed things in-game, considering this is THE game people wanna see off the PS3, it's time to understand that it isn't happening ever. RPCS3 is the only way you're ever gonna play a big chunk of PS3 games again
