Sony to Acquire Large Developers

They're moving large portions of Sony Group around and plan to spin some parts off into their own partial companies so investors can buy stock in them.

They're specifically looking to expand PlayStation where most of the investment will go towards. PlayStation will have double digit billions to play with in buying companies.

Their film and TV divisions are now mostly making PlayStation content. If Sony were to secure a large developer that would give them more established IPs to play with just for Film and TV. They're already making things like a Sekiro anime that has some PlayStation cross promotion with it

Ubisoft isn't looking to get rid of Farcry and AssCreed. I don't know if Sony would opt for shit like Rayman since they have two platformer guys already. A ubisoft firesale would more or less mean smaller developers can buy the rights to their games back or different developers can buy shit like HOMM.

I don't see Sony buying any movie or tv studios because the returns wouldn't be worth it. They're already thinking about ditching Columbia so it wouldn't make sense to double down. Sony Music is already one of the top dogs so if they're making any acquisitions it's likely in the gaming sphere. But not just playstation but probably mobile stuff too.

The case in the UK hasn't closed yet. Saying one thing isn't the same as putting it on paper. There's still an entire appeals process and also parliamentary process to go through which could take at least another 6 months to get through. And in the worst case Microsoft can pull out of the UK entirely seeing as nearly every other country in the world has no issue with this deal.

They won't which is why they've already won. The CMA are making the UK look like a laughing stock according to some of the biggest investment banks in the world who've commented on it in the last few days. The UK relies heavily on Microsoft but at the same time have given them two options to either drop the deal or pull out entirely. So if Microsoft announced they want to pull out all the eyes will be on the CMA for letting such a thing happen. The UK makes less than 600m in revenue for Microsoft and of that they make less than 200m profit. You overestimate the importance of the UK to Microsoft especially when the entire world is supporting them with this deal.

You're drowning in delusion. MS abandoning a market simply because they wouldn't bend over for them would be a massive blow to their image which is already spotty for all of the underhanded shit they do. Second, there's a plethora of voices in support of the CMA so it's not a case of everyone being against them like you're telling yourself. Third, MS would not be making ANY money from the ABK acquisition for years and dropping a market for a game division that only costs them money is not only retarded but extremely retarded. No it wouldn't. Again you're showing you know nothing about the UK. I literally live here and witnessed first hand all the major businesses who pulled out of this country because of brexit and moved to mainland Europe. There are even suggestions that British companies like JLR are going to close down their UK operations and move their factories to Spain in the last few weeks. None of this is new. And secondly there aren't a "plethora" of voices. 38 countries have approved the deal with the UK being the only one to block so far. Nearly everyone is against the CMA and even the EU, the biggest rival to the UK right now, have taken shots at how the CMA have handled this deal. Hell even our own fucking government are questioning this decision with high profile names like the chancellor of the exchequer calling the CMA out.

And I don't care about Sony I'm talking about the business side of things I haven't mentioned Sony in anything but comparisons. I'm not a console warrior like you. I own every PS console ever made.

You're talking about operations retard. MS leaving the UK in this case means they couldn't even SELL anything to the UK. That's guaranteed money down the toilet for a game company to support a division that bleeds money.

No it's guaranteed money down the drain if they let one country stand in the way of their deal when they will be able to benefit from all the money the deal will bring on a global level and especially in their home country where the FTC hadn't officially sued to block it yet and may never will. Where the fuck did this idea come from that the UK is more important than the entire fucking world.

That's their own fault. Microsoft makes less than 200m profit in the UK annually from all their operations. They might be big for some but not for Microsoft. So? You're simply crying that Sony makes money off MXT. Your logic is nonsensical, a gaming company isn't required to make the majority of their money from game sales alone and by that metric they still do well because their games were in the top 10 in terms of profit from sales.. All that's coming from you is that a game company needs to find success under a metric you think should count when that's not how it works in reality. The fact that you're only singling Sony out for behavior that's universal in the industry also indicates you're arguing in bad faith but this is Ganker so that's par the course.

                >You claim they're doing bad things but refuse to elaborate aside from whining about popular game IPs that Sony doens't even own
                I can elaborate.
Playstation is leaning on and relying so heavily on a handful select few games that just keeps and keeps providing them with money beyond the initial purchase of said games. For years and years and years to come.
That they have started to halfass their selection of other videogames broadly. Both in terms of third-party investments and first-party developments.

Playstation's variety and different types of videogames has fallen off a cliff.
And yes this really is a real thing and not just some insane ramblings. In this Activision Blizzard, Sony even had to admit that they just don't have it in them to develop or grow a property to compete with the likes of CoD. And this is because they stopped investing inwards towards cultivating their own (or even third party) dev talent the way they used to.
And Playstation finding these old games that they can just milk forever, is a core reason for why this development ever sprung into motion to begin with and why it has stayed like this.

                We are worse off now.

Variety doesn’t matter if the games are dog shit. Japan studio brought over both white knight chronicles games which were atrocious. It’s better to do one thing well than doing everything poorly. Wild Arms was also a series that was for the majority very bad JRPGs. The Last Guardian was a game where major aspects of it were very poorly done and that was in development for 7-8 years.

Bitching about Sony’s variety when the problem for them for years was general quality of their games being low is dumb. Shit like Horizon and God of War gave them a major foothold into the action genre where their games are now selling just as much as their third party equivalents. Their current games are much better made and have no design decisions that ruin the gameplay like many of their other previous games

Maybe Japan Studio should have made games that sold better? And Sony has been all about third party franchises since Day 1. They've never relied solely on first party offerings and many of the games People associate as 1'st party games weren't even owned by them. I keep seeing retards talking about Sony being too reliant on third party games when that's been their strategy since they entered the industry. And your fucking Japan Studio games sold like shit! Accept it that people didn't buy your beloved shitty niche games! Sony kept them on life support for the entire PS3 generation even though they didn't do shit and even restructured them before shutting them down and that didn't help either. Modern PlayStation’s first party games actually sell. Sony was heavily reliant on third party developers since the original ps1, this meant their own studios were never much of a factor. But with multiplatform releases now being easier to do that had to change with the ps4 and their first party games really rose to prominence and can carry the full load of being a system seller

Eventually Sony’s titles will be considered evergreen. Horizon isn’t even a decade old, the older series God of War now has the majority of the series sales stemming from the last two releases and the original trilogy and spin-offs now make up a very small minority of total sales. Zelda is a series that’s in its 30’s and built up a reputation within that time due to its many installments. Given enough time Sony’s first party titles will reach that same reverence, the last of us is already showing signs that it’s going to be around for a long long time and God of War is certainly shaping up to be a major series to contend with for many years to come

Imagine being this retarded. ABK is worth 70 billion but isn't even the biggest publisher on console. EA is and has the biggest player base on both xbox and playstation according to 3rd party statistics and EAs own testimony. Yet they cost half the price of ABK. Not to mention 70 billion isn't even ABKs true price but an inflated price to get shareholders to agree. They were valued at 50bn when Microsoft announced the deal. So again price doesn't mean shit. Market influence makes the difference. When Microsoft bought zenimax that was the biggest acquisition gaming had ever seen by a country mile and everyone was losing their mind over 7bn yet that paid no bearing on the deal being passed.

You literally said yourself Sony said it isn't fair and if you actually knew anything about the deal at all you'd know every single argument Sony made against the deal was in the console market, which is not without coincidence since they're both competitors in said console market. Even the UK who are attempting to block the deal said there are no console market concerns anyway. So go and pretend to be retarded somewhere else.

Microsoft's acquisition wasn't blocked on console concerns and once again, Sony wasn't buying major publishers with IPs relied on by other competitors. MS was. The size and scale of an acquisition is the most important factor to regulators retard, it's why MS's deal was blocked in the UK. Your delusion that it doesn't matter doesn't mesh with reality. Now why are you even crying about Sony over MS's ABK troubles? Sony's arguments were dismissed which means Sony is more than free to make acquisitions with no trouble. Sorry your corporate master got fucked. Not really

It was because of Microsoft not because of ABK. They're attempting to block it because of Microsofts infrastructure not because ABK are anything special. With the arguments the UK gave they could he applied to a small acquisition. So your arguments are completely against reality once again. And I literally live in the UK and have been following it. I don't know how someone could insist on being retarded. The value of the asset determines the price retard. Retard what are you on about now? MS was blocked because they own a large chunk of cloud infrastructure and are buying up a major third party publisher. They even listed the fact that MS could use ABK's catalogue to give themselves an unfair advantage as a reason for the block. That advantage stems from the popularity of the franchises they're buying, that popularity has led to a price tag of 69 billion. The VALUE of the asset plays a pivotal role in determining whether an acquisition harms competition. I don't know why this is hard for you to understand or why you think your personal delusion is right but allow me to inform you that reality doesn't agree with you.

And once again, I said I'm referring to actual metrics, you're referring to a press release. In case you missed it, ABK owns more than Call of Duty and the price of the acquisition is cited in the FTC argument

No I'm not. I'm referring to the official documents provided to the court as for why the deal should be blocked.

They also publish games on PC but they aren't platform competitors on there. You're literally disagreeing with Sony's own arguments by saying this stupid shit. Sony's concerns were in console gaming where both are platform holders. In PC and mobile they're both small time players and Google/Apple are the competitors or on PC Steam/Epic.

                Nintendo.

SE is worth less than Bungie and Sony bought the latter.

Now you're just pretending to be retarded I'm convinced of it. Show me where Sony is a competitor to Microsoft in mobile or PC gaming/OS. This entire thread is about the console market and why people don't/want to buy xbox consoles. So go and pretend to be retarded somewhere else.

i think they want to buy bandai namco because it does three things

    >more games
    >massive addition to control over the anime market through merch and series rights
    >does not allow microsoft to sue for monopoly shit because its a different market (anime)

Sony can't afford a behemoth like Kadokawa. Kadokawa controls the entire light novel industry in Japan

Even if they could they won't be able to buy them anyway since kadokawa is owned by multiple different shareholders including juggernauts like tencent who won't sell their stake for shit.

Yes. M$ would be suffering from the same issue, if they weren't a key contractor for the defense department. A lot of recent Bethesda titles have been flops, for example, and Halo is dead as a franchise.

I await the collapse of all major game IPs in the 2030s when Sony & MS own every notable IP, but no studios with the staff to properly do something with them.

Well except the games were not good. Japan Studio’s high point was the ps2 but those people left long ago. They spent the ps3, ps4, and ps5 mostly making pretty bad games and the only ones who made good games wound up becoming Team Asobi

Sony making in acquisitions is in response to MS though retard anon. Before MS decided to start buying control since they were shit at competing Sony was more than content with making their own games for the most part and only buying studios they worked closely with for years.

It's kinda funny that the Snoys are hooting and hollering about how Sony wins again... It's almost like they haven't been crying about MS doing this over the past year. I'm genuinely beginning to think they are actually mindbroken.

        >some of them knew Nintendo execs.

And them bamco sold since it was free money after all. I wonder if they regret since under Nintendo thumb they are far more productive.

          Anonymous

I'm going to say no since bamco have kept proving they don't know how to fully utilize monolithsoft. The tool is only as effective as the person weilding it. Being under nintendo also let monolithsoft focus on one platform at a time (not counting handheld) and xenoblade actually fills in the gap of serious jrpg nintendo seriously needed while Namco already had several more successful jrpg series than xenosagas so they'd never have high priority.

            Anonymous

First xenosaga was sucessful, but bamco cant tardwrangler for shit, plus they took control over it on xs2, that on top of usual MS lack of experience and stubbornness.

Nintendo told those retards focus on a single game and make a complete one. Only on xbx they decided to go back into perfect works wank, by that time nintendo saw the whole pontential and rest is history with Zelda.
