What makes LW2 worse than LW1?
They made strategy layer way too complicated, it's actually insane how many background hidden systems there are that you can only find out about are from either digging into the mod files and reading up on this shit or by installing mods on top of mods that will explain them to you. And even if you know about them the strategy layer is just stressful as frick it's not fun, it's deep and complex and somewhat well designed but definitely not fun. This does make the game feel more like leading a guerilla force you really feel like you're shit out of luck against advent I'll give them that.
long story short is that more complexity didn't make for a better game, I still think LW2 is worth playing but just once

I enjoyed it way more than 1 even if some of the advent designs were cringe to me. (although i wasn't a fan of the first firaxis xcom look either)

It rode that line between completely serious and still being quaint and adorable looking.
New ones try more to be "cool" instead of serious". But that cool hero for teens to adults ironically make it seem more kiddy to me than the full blown big headed ay lmao greys and slightly cute looking sprites of the original.
Ideally an xcom game looks mostly realistic, but still has the iconic personal armor look and weird haircuts and 50's looking flying saucers and shit. Make it only very slightly exeggerated in a cartoony style, even less so than the often pixarey look of the nuxcoms. I especially hated the mr. incredible/gears of war looking proportions of soldiers.

and since that's too easy to game, the designers modified the AI to create challenging situations where the aliens would always have a chance to reposition themselves when discovered
and then when they realized that that could be effortlessly gamed as well, they added yet more limitations, like forcing you to make bad choices to get to the objectives in just a few turns
the strategy section was also simplified, forcing you to play within a precise timetable to preserve your funding, rather than funding yourself with missions
why would you want more of this dishonest design

I'd like to see a game with way more focus on the lost and fights with multiple groups of operatives.
I'd like to see the more granular points and inventory system of the original return and make more use of that. (managing inventory mid fight, passing stuff around soldiers, carrying dead ayy lmaos or artefacts for research.
Maybe some ground warfare and building defenses. Much like the base building in the og.
Where you need some place to survive for research or protection and can put resources and planning towards bunkering in in case aliens come along.
Hijacking alien craft. Stealing alien resources. Battles on moving ships.
Being able to use intel to get the drop on an alien operation. Then having agency over sabotaging an alien operation and hiding your soldiers guerilla style, choosing when to set off bombs or trapdoors before attacking them.
There's a lot of stuff you can do.
But in general it's the granularity of the og actionpoints and ESPECIALLY the very clear rules for line of sight that I miss.
Detecting or staying hidden was too vague in nu xcoms. It felt (and was) arbitrary as the game sort of decided when its time to spawn a pod somewhere instead of you stumbling upon aliens that were actualy already there doing stuff.
The addition of sounds triggering the opponent and vice versa was enjoyed. That was important but always felt half unintentional in the original. Hearing doors was crucial in tipping you off where people could be. Not sure if they aliens had that advantage for your moves either.
Played halo games up to reach for co-op with my bro. Some of them I don't recognisce but work great in xcom.
