        I'm aware of the RE4 HD project; I just didn't know if that was a screenshot of the mod or a screenshot of the VR version, which also redid some textures. In any case, the left example does not appear to be the finished version of the HD project because the wooden texture is the only thing changed in that screenshot, and I also don't recognize that wooden texture as being in the mod.

              Luckily he lived in Spain where all the photography was taken. Imagine it like doing a Dev Photo vacation but over a multiple years instead of like a month. Not saying he didn't do a lot for us, I just want to point out that this is something that is plausible for other games with dedicated fanbases. It's still a geniune miracle this was made.

        The ironic thing is, this isn't even that hard. Just take a photo of the object and extrude polygons where necessary to make it all line up. It's very basic when you really look at it. They just didn't have the poly and texture budget (or the autism) to make it like that to begin with.

          There was a guy on YouTube who used to make 1min Blender tutorials like this. He just placed a picture on a flat plane then extruded shapes out of it. Fixed some texture stretching around the new extrusions and call it a day. The final product was surprisingly good considering the short amount of time spent on it.

            I did it with a low poly M4A1 model and it looks great for what it is. A better modeler could have done it in like 1/4th the polys as me and probably make it look better.

      As you may already know the Resident Evil 1 remake uses pre-rendered backgrounds for most of its visuals, so there are very few cases in the game where that would be useful. However, there was a guy trying to unfrick the backgrounds that Capcom poorly upscaled for the HD remasters of the remake, which was desperately needed since the said upscales added terrible sharpening artifacts. Unfortunately, he disappeared without finishing the project.

      my bets're on them vacuum sucking every piece of hamfisted cliche fun from the game, like the not-codec calls.
      then again, i just can't understand RE4 getting a remake at all when it is the peak example of modern TPS gameplay that holds up well to this day, outperforming competitors decades later. Only original Dead Space is close and as dear to my heart

    Left doesn't even have real time lighting. It looks exactly like the right in 2005 with just higher resolution and better textures. No other technical improvements made in 18 years. THE FRICK?
