And? You can go to the secondary market to get keys, just like you can go to the secondary market to get physical discs. Nobody is denying that it's moronic, as they can just issue an infinite number of keys vs a finite number of discs, but you're just slinging buzzwords to make yourself mad if you're trying to connect this to "you'll own nothing."

Especially since you're complaining about losing the Steam version, whereas the GOG version isn't delisted

only if the developer paid valve to implement drm. thats the funny part, you can just release games on steam drm free. you dont need to release on gog or anything to be drm free. you can just do it. they even charge you for the drm aspect. its literally cheaper to release games on steam drm free then to not.

                >I wanted to replay GTA3, and was wondering what's the best version to play on PC
The best way to play gta 3 is to pirate the classic pc port and run it with the reversed engineer mod. Unless you are a total scrub, this is an easy find.
If you cant do that however, you will have to pick your poison. Just buy the classic trilogy from rockstar's store, or if dont want to use their store, go either with definitive edition because it has modern controls, or with the PS2 emulated version that has the soulful graphics but has the atrocious ps2 controls gta games used to have there

It was never that great. It was trying to do two things at once -- contemporary mainstream cover shooter and artsy, introspective Heart of Darkness semi-adaptation -- and the only reason it got so much praise was for being the only thing to do both at the same time. Yet it was a bit of a jack of all trades, not particularly great at either side, so is it really all that commendable to produce something so schizophrenic?

I mean, yeah, it's unique. But that's all it's really got going for it.

The game doesn't get enough praise for its artistic direction, compared to how much people talk about the story, for better or for worse.

        Anonymous

I'm annoyed by how easily you can get away with it in games, with an even barely passable "auteur" story, compared to other media.
This game is one example, with its cheap meta commentary and disingenuous parlor tricks, and it gets praised as pure genius for a decade.
Similarly with something like Last of Us, that tells an ok story filled to the brim with clichès and banalities about loss, grief, revenge and all the other themes that have been beaten ground for centuries, but since the gaming landscape is so fricking basic (in terms of storytelling, anyway) it gets hailed as some sort of perfectly cut diamond.
Of the games i've played, i can probably count on one hand the ones who's cutscenes aren't worth skipping.

      Anonymous

I mean I really enjoyed it for the most part. The gameplay is meh but it's still fun to shoot pajeets and US grunts, the big fancy meta narrative falls apart if you think about it too much but it still works as a deconstruction of military shooters. Maybe not early COD like they were obviously trying to parody.
There are good scenes, the voice acting is good and the music is stellar. I am more optimistic than most on this board, though.

They try and ask 'what if war bad and you bad because you do war?' without giving the player character any options or agency outside of continuing to do the things they tell you off for doing. No, not buying the game is the right option. Giving the devs money for their pretentious wankery is bad form, like praising your dog for pissing on your bed.
        >you chose to keep going, why?
Never played it, I just watched playthroughs a few years after the game came out.
        >because you had already spent the money?

        >because you wanted closure?

Yes. I feel better because of my inherent moral and mental superiority to the developers of the game.

        I learnt two things:
        1) I'm not a self-flagellating masochist
        2) Don't play anything written by Richard Pearsey and/or Walt Williams

This kind of homosexualry is unacceptable in an interactive medium, the devs should have made it possible to have more choices. How you deal with those choices would be the arty farty part of the game, as it stands the devs are clearly coping by doing mental gymnastics because they didn't finish the game.

They're going to reuse the Spec Ops branding to launch an edgy faux (Heavily based on, but not actually) Syrian civil war squad based territory control battle royal game Taking place in Spec Op's natural disaster ruined Arabian peninsula.

The heavy 'War is bad and why do you enjoy killing people?' messaging of the last one was really going to undermine getting access to Tactical UAV strike when you get a 8 Kill Streak.
The Use of AI to make player characters properly call out obvious bits of notable terrain and points of Interest (like the characters did in Spec Ops: The Line) will be slightly controversial -- but the complex sand physics will be a noted high point, with people making compilations of horrible sand based physics deaths and the AI character voices reacting with appropriate situational horror and agony.

They'd be fine if half the games weren't just “Licensing agreements usually only last for a limited period of time.”
I like when they list a definitive date, not just the 'information' that it may possibly leave at some unspecified time in the future.

Often times though delisted games don't have a date, or they occur too soon for news to spread. A lot of times they just get removed without warning. Crimson Clover, for example. I didn't know that was removed (so people buy the newer version instead). If you look at the news, there's nothing there about it being removed. It just poofed one day.

Statistically speaking, no, the number of sales dramatically drop a few months or a year at best after release. This is only extended if it has DLCs or if it's a really really good/popular game.

Non-perpetual licenses should not be legal. It's moronic that movies/tv/games can just be removed from the world because they wanted to use a song in them.

Reminder that you can contribute metadata (checksums, response headers for DRM-free games) of digital releases to No-Intro, so we can have a record of legit files we can count with in case digital stores bite the dust, or games get delisted.

Some trivia about Spec Ops: The Line.
    1. The Soldier or Civilian Choice in Chapter 9 was supposed to include 3 men instead of 2.[1] "The Journey" trailer makes a reference to this, in fact (pic related). This makes it a relatively late change.
    2. The original plan for loading screens was to have minigames. But Namco patented the idea, so it was dropped and replaced with those ominous phrases and quotes.[2]
    3. There were going to be female soldiers, but they were worried of a possible controversy. So they decided to not include any women at all.[3]
    4. Despite what everyone says, Yager had plans to sell the game as "not a generic shooter." The terrible reception of "The Journey" convinced 2K to take away creative control over the marketing from Yager.[4]
    5. The fish of the giant aquiarium at the Burj Aurora were stolen from BioShock 2.[5]

      6. There was going to be a dehydration meter. If you failed to take care of it, Walker would start having hallucinations.[6]
      7. Walt Williams wanted to purge a couple of scenes from the game:[7]
      >At one point , you come across two men. The antagonist explains that both men have committed crimes worthy of a death sentence. It's up to the player to decide guilt. But when we changed the story so that Konrad is in fact dead and Walker is secretly insane, suddenly this made no sense. We wanted to cut it, but one of our bosses felt the scene worked so well that it couldn't be cut, regardless of whether it made sense. So we just had to accept it. This boss was literally the only person who felt it should stay. Even Nolan North, during recording, was like, 'You guys are going to fix this, right?' The only workaround I could come up with was having Walker hallucinate the entire scene, which isn't revealed until the end. But, it was . Walker goes comatose and hallucinates himself in a 'moral choice.' The player takes part in this tense moment, but what's really happening is the player character is standing there staring at corpses while his squad mates yell at him.
      >There's a scene in Spec Ops where Walker falls out of a building and slides down the side, barely dodging huge pieces of debris. He flies off into a gorge, and barely manages to grab a pipe. It doesn't fit with the rest of the game. This was the first cutscene made, very early in production. It was meant as a visual benchmark. Some of us wanted to cut it because it felt like a fun action movie scene and the game's tone had moved far away from that, but a 'Higher-Up' decreed that it needed to stay because he thought it was cool. It's something that made it in simply because we were forced to keep it.

The higher ups made the right choice. The disconnect between the typical action sequences and the descent into madness the main dude has gives the game a more schizophrenic feel which works as an advantage.

I never got the "they force you to do it" criticism against the game. Because the games forces the player to beat bosses, and then after the player wins, they *do* feel like a hero. Why do you feel like a hero after being forced to be a hero? But you don't feel like a villain after being forced to be a villain?
