The "play portably" factor of the Wii U was barely existent because few games could be played exclusively on the gamepad.

You know what "almost" means anon? it means that exceptions exist. So yes, Splatoon required the gamepad, just like the other two games i mentioned. You could keep going you know? Zombi U required the gamepad too. You know what didn't? Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Bayonetta, New Super Mario Bros, Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Pokken, Donkey Kong, Yoshi. 98 eggs, now THAT is what I like to see. I was a little worried when two of my teammates kept flicking the dynamo but otherwise it went pretty smoothly. It wasn't until wave 3 when we truly went home after the third teammate acquired it. Mowing down all motherfrickers left and right and giving us the kill opportunities. Even had a reverse of my previous situation where I followed his lead and ended up killing stingers and flyflish galore. Juicebox, I could kiss you.
Male 3 has always been my preferred choice, but that's probably just because I played him in 1.

I find it weird that Sheldon wasn't in that photo considering he gives you all the weapons including the modified rainmaker in Octo Canyon, and is the only reason Marie can come to the rescue at the end as he drives the flying truck. Plus his grandfather was already in the original Squidbeak Splatoon so it implies he also is. It's my headcanon that he was behind Agent 4 in the corner or was just extremely busy that day because he seemed way too invested in their affairs to not just walk outside the shop for that photo.

Me, I have different outfits for different Squidkids. Call me autistic, but my agent 8 is a girl while my Octo boy uses chargers, my agent 4 is a dualie user and my inkling boy is a heavy weapons user.
I have headcanons that they're all friends and have different personalities and adventures.
To be fair, I used to. Squid girl in 1 was very cute and I ain't gonna pretend I never fapped to her, but I just wanted to mess around as a squid boy. Did the same thing in 2, and in odds were very close that I would have switched over to octoling boys after beating Octo Expansion because of that fricking sweet afro. Afros are always god tier, and now they have pompadours in 3 so octo boys are supreme chad material.
But, veemo happened. She happened and I love her with all my heart. I can never be separated from my baby now.

If you have eyes and a brain, it’s easy to see it is much more Octo Expansion than 1/2’s campaign. And you’d have to be dense to think Octavio is the villain again
I'll play the campaign, I enjoy the creative level design and how it establishes the particular aesthetics of the game. also, the worldbuilding is pretty cool, and it's fu to explore what is explicitly presented, discovered, or intuited through observation of the game world.
also, the bosses tend to be pretty neat in the single player stuff, and the music is pretty rad too

Debatable, both had shit specials that ruined entire modes for the lifespan of the game, and both had periods where they had good main weapon balance. And still irrelevant to 3, which is solving a lot of issues from both
I found the abilities in 1 way less annoying than a majority of the ones in 2. But even with that aside the ratio of weapons that were good for splatting turf vs players in splat1 leaned way more in favor of turf. In splat2 I always get matched with mongoloid morons that have player splat focused weapons and they're always dead last on the leaderboard.
Miiverse is entirely obsolete with the art implemented as it is. And having to look away from the main screen is much worse than being able to pop the minimap overtop of your normal view

The only requirement for Anarchy Battles (which is just Ranked) is being Level 10, transferring data lets you bypass this restriction. My question is what are rank points. Is it going to be glicko2 ranking points again, or is it something different? It almost sounds like it's going to be something arbitrary like Apex Legends.
Which is the Apex Legends system. I think that makes some sense but I wonder how well that will work for matchmaking. Splatoon 1 had a problem with rank inflation which I think ended up affecting matchmaking quality. Splatoon 2 ditched the entire system and was based entirely on the more mathematically sound glicko2 rating with a cosmetic ranking system over it, but that lead to frustration with the ranking system because the glicko2 match prediction was used to determine how your cosmetic rank changed. Splatoon 3, if the system works as described, is ditching glicko2 and cosmetic ranks for ranked battles. Have they figured out how to ensure quality matchmaking without it or are they going to have the Splatoon 1 problem of everyone getting crammed into A and S with huge variability?

Huge improvement. Having different ranked queues for the map/mode variety is great in and of itself, but having different levels of intensity built into the queues based on what is at risk (X being most serious, Series being more normal ranked less stressful than previous games, and Open being essentially a casual queue for the ranked modes) is a god send. Exactly what the game needed and will allow you to enjoy those modes much more
Open is basically the unranked ranked modes everyone has been begging for.

Look at the line above it, individually deranking has been replaced by a global rank decay every few months. Within a season, you can't go from B to B-. But when the next season comes around you'll be back to C+ if you ended the previous season at B.
Like the struggle of having a life outside of Splatoon 3, such as requiring to do laundry, or buy food and water, or needing to clean or take out the trash or do the dishes. Ranking down is ok, but its not ok to entirely rank you down into another letter grade, that's too far.

Here's why: >team acts really stupid >gets destroyed >act correctly >the whole other team gangs up on me >lose >"its ok, players disconnected so your rank never changed" >repeat for over twenty games >finally get a game with no disconnects >whole team sucks, players literally standing next to spawn spinning in place >lose >gain nothing
Its a fricking crap shoot. Entirely luck based, you cannot do anything unless everything lines up for you to stand a chance at doing well.
Its the same kinda stuff with Salmon Run for example. Work by the "three strikes" rule, and you can quickly tell if you are going to lose during a wave or not. The three things you check are:
1. Do you have a fast weapon?
2. Do you have a good special?
3. Do you have a easy wave, normal wave, or hard wave?
If two of these three are bad, you are probably dead, and if you get all three bad you are definitely dead. Let me give an example: >Wave 1 >You are given range blaster (slow weapon, 1 strike) >You are given bombs (very slow special, 2 strike) >Its the glowflies wave (possibly the hardest wave, 3 strikes)
This is what is going to happen. Assume your team magically knows to stay close to basket to bottleneck them, that's already a gamble. Your team won't use their specials here because its the first wave, they are going to assume everyone else will though. So you will be swarmed, kill some, then die. Come back, realize nobody is using their specials, use the bombs, then die. Just as you come back for the second time, the next glowflies wave will arrive and kill off everyone. So there you have it, its luck if you get the tools to survive in the first place or not. Same for turf. Same for ranked.

Your rank is determined by the point at which you stop being able to carry the rest of the morons on your team. If you can't carry your team to victory no matter how stupid they are, you have found the appropriate rank for your skill level.

You need the proper tools to win properly. Such tools would be:
Not having someone disconnect on your team.
Not having your team quit during the game because a player on the team disconnected (this happens a lot, someone on the team disappears, and the other two start squid bagging or spinning around)

Splatoon is a TEAM-BASED OBJECTIVE-BASED game. So you can think that you're doing all the work by always pushing and trying to attack the rainmaker, but if your team isn't ready to push with you, you're the liability NOT THEM.

I haven't played in along time but when I did I was a roughly A rank player, so not even that great. But my daughter started playing and I would join her matches for turf war. It was crazy, I felt legit bad and wouldn't play too much with her because I was like a god on the field. The super low rank players are a different breed. I don't know the c rank stuff for sure but I gotta imagine it's the same. Still I can kind of feel for anon having to dredge through it, but once you get to B- the absolute shitters (the ones that stand there staring down and spinning) should be filtered away.

I had a similar experience back when I played Warzone, I used to sweat a fair amount on there but then one day my friend who barely plays downloaded the game and I paired up with him and got thrown into what was apparently a "new player" lobby, holy frick I've legit played against mid level AIs on games that were more challenging, people who would literally stand still and start looking around for where they were getting shot from the moment the firing started. I guess when you spend so much time playing video games you just kind of expect everyone to know what they're doing at least on a fundamental level but that's not the case at all.
It is wild at how warped out sense of control is on 3d games. We move the camera stick so intuitively, it's second nature. But the camera stick is THE BIGGEST BARRIER to any person that doesn't play video games.
Imagine never playing video games in your life and then playing a shooter as your first game. lmao. But even that's difficult to imagine for us.

While I generally agree, some weapon types just can't do a thing. If you don't have a roller on your team or some type of splatling or other high-dps, you're getting fricked. Blasters and snipers will ALWAYS lose on glowflies.

It goes S, then S+0 - S+9.
S has the "OK" line about 2/3 up the progress bar.
S+0 and onward has the "OK" line at the 1/2 mark up the progress bar. So you derank faster there, too.
S and S+ are different just like A and A+ are different
Low-end S+ players will get dumped into regular S, while regular S players will (presumably) follow the same scale as all the other ranks and get knocked down by two, to regular A.

Splat2n's ranking system was cancer. Getting a few bad solo queues in a row resetting hours of progress... not cool, not cool at all. I hope 3's is purely linear (aka no losing points on loss, only gaining points for winning).
In 3 you'll earn Rank Points by winning, and have to spend them when you're ready to try a promotion series to the next rank. So you can play Ranked modes semi-casually without worrying about going on a losing streak, and choose to tryhard and Rank Up when you're ready.
There's no time limit or anything either, it's just about winning so many games before losing too many (I believe it's 5 wins before 3 loses).

There are two separate Ranked queues, Anarchy Battle (Series) and Anarchy Battle (Open).
(Open) is essentially "causal" Ranked matches. You can queue with a party or go solo. In both (Open) and (Series) games, you earn (or lose) Rank Points for your Rank as you win (or lose). Your Rank and Rank Points are not tied to the game mode (Splat Zones, Rainmaker, etc.) like they were in Splatoon 2.
To play (Series), you need to pay some Rank Points (scaled to your Rank) as an "entrance fee." This is a solo queue where you goal is to win five games before you lose three games. Based on how well you do, you will be rewarded with Rank Points when you complete the Series (by winning 5 games or losing 3).
Each specific letter grade is a Rank, from C- to S and S+0 (all the way to S+50). You will NEVER derank as the result of losing games. You can only lose Rank Points.
You can only increase your Rank by choosing to enter a Rank-Up Battle, which can only be done in the Anarchy Battle (Series) queue. This costs Rank Points to attempt, and requires you to win three games before you lose three games. Again, you are not risking or losing anything by attempting this, except for the Rank Points you pay for the attempt.
All players will have their Rank decreased at the start of a new season (every three months). As a rule, your Rank will drop down two tiers from the highest Rank you have achieved - for example, a B Rank player will skip B- and drop to C+. An exception is that S+0 players will only drop to S, and S+10 or higher players will only drop to S+0.
"The method of adjusting ranks may change in future updates."
X Rank will not be in the game at launch, but will be added in a future update as a separate queue from Anarchy Battles available to players who are at least S+0.
League Battles likewise will be added in a future update.
Small correction, (Series) matches don't have you gain or lose Ranked Points on a per-game basis, you're rewarded based on your total performance at the end of the Series.
I ASSUME you wouldn't lose further points even if you lose all three games, since you have to pay a fee just to queue up, and that you can earn substantially more Rank Points by playing Series matches instead of Open ones to make it worthwhile (they mention something about getting more points from "medals" which I assume are awarded for each game won in a series, but it's never mentioned anywhere else)
I noticed some other slight inconsistencies between what that info page says and what we saw in the Direct, like the info page says you can pay Sheldon 4 licenses to get a weapon early but the Direct shows paying 3, so one of them might have out-of-date details and it's all still subject to change this close to release.
That last line makes it sound like they haven't really decided what they want to happen when the "season" changes over. Just that they want something to happen to give players a reason to play some more. Ranking back up to where you were is a bar to fill I guess. Overall the new system sounds pretty cool to me. I'm with other anons here in that I welcome a more casual way to play the objective based game modes.

OK, what's the best way to use the Dynamo Roller?
I've been using it to clear enemies so my Teammates can attack Bosses, ink pathways, and it's fantastic during Glowfly rounds.
What else can I do with this?
You're already using it better than 90% of the morons who play. Clearing out the mooks so allies don't have to deal with them and concentrate on bosses is my favorite thing to do. That being said, you can easily clear a decent number of bosses by yourself. If a steel eel isn't targeting you, you can just roll into the end part and kill it almost immediately. A jumping swing is a 100% kill on steelheads, too. You can roll into scrappers from behind, as well, but you run the risk of dying if you've already taken damage.

Rolling does far more damage and is faster, but you can't do it to all the bosses so you have to assess the situation and try to do what's best. Lord knows I've killed plenty of steel eels back to back and then immediately reload to kill imminent steelheads.
These do spiritual damage to me. Especially the smallfry one.

I do my best to achieve a balance. My average is around 15 or so eggs, with kills ranging anywhere from 500 to 1000. Kind of don't have a choice what with stingers targeting me 90% of the time and randoms constantly babysitting eggs.

98 eggs, now THAT is what I like to see. I was a little worried when two of my teammates kept flicking the dynamo but otherwise it went pretty smoothly. It wasn't until wave 3 when we truly went home after the third teammate acquired it. Mowing down all motherfrickers left and right and giving us the kill opportunities. Even had a reverse of my previous situation where I followed his lead and ended up killing stingers and flyflish galore. Juicebox, I could kiss you.
Male 3 has always been my preferred choice, but that's probably just because I played him in 1.
I find it weird that Sheldon wasn't in that photo considering he gives you all the weapons including the modified rainmaker in Octo Canyon, and is the only reason Marie can come to the rescue at the end as he drives the flying truck. Plus his grandfather was already in the original Squidbeak Splatoon so it implies he also is. It's my headcanon that he was behind Agent 4 in the corner or was just extremely busy that day because he seemed way too invested in their affairs to not just walk outside the shop for that photo.

What makes Splatoon 1 so much better than 2 & 3?
I found the abilities in 1 way less annoying than a majority of the ones in 2. But even with that aside the ratio of weapons that were good for splatting turf vs players in splat1 leaned way more in favor of turf. In splat2 I always get matched with mongoloid morons that have player splat focused weapons and they're always dead last on the leaderboard.
I can understand why people feel some Specials are frustrating to deal with, especially if the Enemy Team pops them off one after another.

The only requirement for Anarchy Battles (which is just Ranked) is being Level 10, transferring data lets you bypass this restriction. Series and Open are different queues which work slightly differently, but they don't have different requirements. We can assume this gets you into both.

My question is what are rank points. Is it going to be glicko2 ranking points again, or is it something different? It almost sounds like it's going to be something arbitrary like Apex Legends.
Seems like you try to accumulate the points via betting them in Series battles and you rank up at certain point thresholds.
Which is the Apex Legends system. I think that makes some sense but I wonder how well that will work for matchmaking. Splatoon 1 had a problem with rank inflation which I think ended up affecting matchmaking quality. Splatoon 2 ditched the entire system and was based entirely on the more mathematically sound glicko2 rating with a cosmetic ranking system over it, but that lead to frustration with the ranking system because the glicko2 match prediction was used to determine how your cosmetic rank changed. Splatoon 3, if the system works as described, is ditching glicko2 and cosmetic ranks for ranked battles. Have they figured out how to ensure quality matchmaking without it or are they going to have the Splatoon 1 problem of everyone getting crammed into A and S with huge variability?

Huge improvement. Having different ranked queues for the map/mode variety is great in and of itself, but having different levels of intensity built into the queues based on what is at risk (X being most serious, Series being more normal ranked less stressful than previous games, and Open being essentially a casual queue for the ranked modes) is a god send. Exactly what the game needed and will allow you to enjoy those modes much more
Open is basically the unranked ranked modes everyone has been begging for.

Look at the line above it, individually deranking has been replaced by a global rank decay every few months. Within a season, you can't go from B to B-. But when the next season comes around you'll be back to C+ if you ended the previous season at B.

This. I only recently started getting into ranked games (C-) and its taken me over 50 games to get to (C). Here's why:
>team acts really stupid
>gets destroyed
>act correctly
>the whole other team gangs up on me
>lose
>"its ok, players disconnected so your rank never changed"
>repeat for over twenty games
>finally get a game with no disconnects
>whole team sucks, players literally standing next to spawn spinning in place
>lose
>gain nothing
Its a fricking crap shoot. Entirely luck based, you cannot do anything unless everything lines up for you to stand a chance at doing well.
Its the same kinda stuff with Salmon Run for example. Work by the "three strikes" rule, and you can quickly tell if you are going to lose during a wave or not. The three things you check are:
1. Do you have a fast weapon?
2. Do you have a good special?
3. Do you have a easy wave, normal wave, or hard wave?
If two of these three are bad, you are probably dead, and if you get all three bad you are definitely dead. Let me give an example:
>Wave 1
>You are given range blaster (slow weapon, 1 strike)
>You are given bombs (very slow special, 2 strike)
>Its the glowflies wave (possibly the hardest wave, 3 strikes)
This is what is going to happen. Assume your team magically knows to stay close to basket to bottleneck them, that's already a gamble. Your team won't use their specials here because its the first wave, they are going to assume everyone else will though. So you will be swarmed, kill some, then die. Come back, realize nobody is using their specials, use the bombs, then die. Just as you come back for the second time, the next glowflies wave will arrive and kill off everyone. So there you have it, its luck if you get the tools to survive in the first place or not. Same for turf. Same for ranked.
Your rank is determined by the point at which you stop being able to carry the rest of the morons on your team. If you can't carry your team to victory no matter how stupid they are, you have found the appropriate rank for your skill level.
You need the proper tools to win properly. Such tools would be:
Not having someone disconnect on your team.
Not having your team quit during the game because a player on the team disconnected (this happens a lot, someone on the team disappears, and the other two start squid bagging or spinning around)
Not gonna lie, your scenarios don't happen that often. It sounds like you're the one being carried. Everyone always talks about the "rest of the team" and shoves blame off themselves. "Surely, I cannot be the problem!"
Maybe if you can't get out of C, it's not your teammates. You can literally win games alone, through solo effort, in C and B.

Splatoon is a TEAM-BASED OBJECTIVE-BASED game. So you can think that you're doing all the work by always pushing and trying to attack the rainmaker, but if your team isn't ready to push with you, you're the liability NOT THEM.
I haven't played in along time but when I did I was a roughly A rank player, so not even that great. But my daughter started playing and I would join her matches for turf war. It was crazy, I felt legit bad and wouldn't play too much with her because I was like a god on the field. The super low rank players are a different breed. I don't know the c rank stuff for sure but I gotta imagine it's the same. Still I can kind of feel for anon having to dredge through it, but once you get to B- the absolute shitters (the ones that stand there staring down and spinning) should be filtered away.
I had a similar experience back when I played Warzone, I used to sweat a fair amount on there but then one day my friend who barely plays downloaded the game and I paired up with him and got thrown into what was apparently a "new player" lobby, holy frick I've legit played against mid level AIs on games that were more challenging, people who would literally stand still and start looking around for where they were getting shot from the moment the firing started. I guess when you spend so much time playing video games you just kind of expect everyone to know what they're doing at least on a fundamental level but that's not the case at all.
I think it just goes to show that modern matchmaking actually works on the large scale.
It is wild at how warped out sense of control is on 3d games. We move the camera stick so intuitively, it's second nature. But the camera stick is THE BIGGEST BARRIER to any person that doesn't play video games.

While I generally agree, some weapon types just can't do a thing. If you don't have a roller on your team or some type of splatling or other high-dps, you're getting fricked. Blasters and snipers will ALWAYS lose on glowflies.

Splat2n's ranking system was cancer. Getting a few bad solo queues in a row resetting hours of progress... not cool, not cool at all. I hope 3's is purely linear (aka no losing points on loss, only gaining points for winning).
Splat3’s ranking system was explained in detail like 50 posts back
In 3 you'll earn Rank Points by winning, and have to spend them when you're ready to try a promotion series to the next rank. So you can play Ranked modes semi-casually without worrying about going on a losing streak, and choose to tryhard and Rank Up when you're ready.
There's no time limit or anything either, it's just about winning so many games before losing too many (I believe it's 5 wins before 3 loses).

Yea that's a good question. It doesn't really say anywhere. Does that happen naturally as you accrue these "rank points"? Those points themselves aren't really explained anywhere either. Presumably you are awarded some for winning but how many? Maybe you just spend them to rank from - to + and then make a stash to wager in the series mode.
There are two separate Ranked queues, Anarchy Battle (Series) and Anarchy Battle (Open).
(Open) is essentially "causal" Ranked matches. You can queue with a party or go solo. In both (Open) and (Series) games, you earn (or lose) Rank Points for your Rank as you win (or lose). Your Rank and Rank Points are not tied to the game mode (Splat Zones, Rainmaker, etc.) like they were in Splatoon 2.
To play (Series), you need to pay some Rank Points (scaled to your Rank) as an "entrance fee." This is a solo queue where you goal is to win five games before you lose three games. Based on how well you do, you will be rewarded with Rank Points when you complete the Series (by winning 5 games or losing 3).
Each specific letter grade is a Rank, from C- to S and S+0 (all the way to S+50). You will NEVER derank as the result of losing games. You can only lose Rank Points.
You can only increase your Rank by choosing to enter a Rank-Up Battle, which can only be done in the Anarchy Battle (Series) queue. This costs Rank Points to attempt, and requires you to win three games before you lose three games. Again, you are not risking or losing anything by attempting this, except for the Rank Points you pay for the attempt.
All players will have their Rank decreased at the start of a new season (every three months). As a rule, your Rank will drop down two tiers from the highest Rank you have achieved - for example, a B Rank player will skip B- and drop to C+. An exception is that S+0 players will only drop to S, and S+10 or higher players will only drop to S+0.

X Rank will not be in the game at launch, but will be added in a future update as a separate queue from Anarchy Battles available to players who are at least S+0.
League Battles likewise will be added in a future update.
Small correction, (Series) matches don't have you gain or lose Ranked Points on a per-game basis, you're rewarded based on your total performance at the end of the Series.
I ASSUME you wouldn't lose further points even if you lose all three games, since you have to pay a fee just to queue up, and that you can earn substantially more Rank Points by playing Series matches instead of Open ones to make it worthwhile (they mention something about getting more points from "medals" which I assume are awarded for each game won in a series, but it's never mentioned anywhere else)
I noticed some other slight inconsistencies between what that info page says and what we saw in the Direct, like the info page says you can pay Sheldon 4 licenses to get a weapon early but the Direct shows paying 3, so one of them might have out-of-date details and it's all still subject to change this close to release.
That last line makes it sound like they haven't really decided what they want to happen when the "season" changes over. Just that they want something to happen to give players a reason to play some more. Ranking back up to where you were is a bar to fill I guess. Overall the new system sounds pretty cool to me. I'm with other anons here in that I welcome a more casual way to play the objective based game modes.

You're already using it better than 90% of the morons who play. Clearing out the mooks so allies don't have to deal with them and concentrate on bosses is my favorite thing to do. That being said, you can easily clear a decent number of bosses by yourself. If a steel eel isn't targeting you, you can just roll into the end part and kill it almost immediately. A jumping swing is a 100% kill on steelheads, too. You can roll into scrappers from behind, as well, but you run the risk of dying if you've already taken damage.
You'd think they would give that to octo boys since we have japanese ink forded one mirrion times now as a weapon.
Does the Dynamo do more damage running over a Boss or with it's Swing, because I've been trying to do the former more to save Ink.

Rolling does far more damage and is faster, but you can't do it to all the bosses so you have to assess the situation and try to do what's best. Lord knows I've killed plenty of steel eels back to back and then immediately reload to kill imminent steelheads.
These do spiritual damage to me. Especially the smallfry one.

I do my best to achieve a balance. My average is around 15 or so eggs, with kills ranging anywhere from 500 to 1000. Kind of don't have a choice what with stingers targeting me 90% of the time and randoms constantly babysitting eggs.

It's weak evidence, ambiguous even in context (does "two years older than Agent 3" mean "when Marie met Agent 3" or older than Agent 3 now?) and like many of Marie's other lines might just be completely made up by NoA, but it's worth considering. (The wiki asserts that the line isn't in the original Japanese, but I don't really trust the wiki to get details like this right either)
Personality-wise, Agent 4 is consistently depicted as cheerful or even goofy compared to the very stoic and serious Agent 3, which lends credibility to the idea of her being younger than 3 and 8.

I'm amazed at the numbers of sub level 10 players I run into whenever I decide to dip in for a few rouns of Turf War here and there, like people are legit still buying this game.

I dunno if Splat3 is gonna outsell Splat2 yet or not, but it's still gonna easily break 10 mil at least either way. Series is quite healthy.

Like, they're Marina's age but #8 is obviously of Agent 3-4 age, just octolings grow up faster (specially girls which is why there are only octogirl soldiers.)

And male Agent 8 is just to have male octolings playable but they're not in Octavio's army.
