They were on track to improving when 13 and 15 weren't exclusive to a single platform. Now they regressed. It's been months since release and a release date for a second platform hasn't even been announced yet.

Exclusivity doesn't seem to help third-party developers in this market as it once did. It makes more sense to support as many major platforms as you can, the hardware differences between PS5, XBX and PC are almost negligible at this point, only the Switch and Apple Silicon Macs are the major outlier now.

Do you have any source how much they get for exclusivity deals?
Or are you pulling data out of your ass?

Wasn't the free Sony payment supposed to make up for any lost sales on PC/Xbox? The typical deal that Sony makes with Japanese devs to keep games off Western platforms seems to have worked in the past for some games. I wonder what changed.

Most Japanese devs moved away from Sony exclusives/timed exclusives last gen, and most of them are seeing great success on PC now. The PC market is too big ignore nowadays and Square Enix is suffering the consequences of clinging onto a dying practice.

But I thought their influence in the mobile market was actually shrinking? Of course, their position is huge, so it would take years of decline to see financial troubles, but I really wouldn't bet on them in the future

It's simple. The mobile market is bigger than the PC market which is bigger than the console market. This is why FF16 should've been on mobile platforms.

BG3 is successful in spite of turn-based.
It's the open-endedness/custom characters/freedom of BG3 that attracts people. Not the combat.

If Square wanted to do turn-based for a major AAA release, they would need to do something else than their standard "completely on rails hallway simulator with epic cutscenes and long dialogue with no actual input into that dialogue" design. Doubt that's something they're willing to do, but who knows.

I like BG3, but lets not fool ourselves, BG3 is FotM and attracted people due to word of mouth and the bear sex memes

Level design has forever been Square's worst flaw, and it transcends across al their teams and continues to this day. FF7 Remake. All hallways, just well disguised hallways because they have interesting stuff in those hallways.

Earlier ones did a better job giving you the illusion of "not a hallway", 13 was simply the absolute worst one that couldn't hid it at all.

preferred shares are still ownership in the company you fucking retard. it just means they get PREFERENCE in salvaging the company's assets if it fails, and may or may not get "official" stockholder voting rights, but tencent still owns 30% of the company and you're double moron retarded if you think they don't hold sway over larian's decisions if they want.

                Anonymous

That's not how that works, retard. The belief that shareholders own companies specifically stems from the idea that their ability to vote gives them power over the entire structure of the company. If they do not have any voting rights, this concept does not apply to them. They own nothing and the only thing they are entitled to is dividend payments and preference for payouts in light of liquidation. Go read a book before trying to talk about things you do not understand.

No mf. Turn based combat in final fantasy was always shit. The primary reason it did well was because it had unique settings with pretty boy MC's that gave you a sense of wonder in a sea of lord of the rings clones.

The problem for FF is that games now have better settings and character creators have gotten to the point where everyone can be happy.

I don't care about sex scenes, but more dynamic and customizable character/party interaction and choice would be great. Just having an actual traditional Final Fantasy party again would be a nice change of pace since we haven't gotten that for like 15 fucking years.

I mean can you create your own custom character in cold steel? At least in the persona games with fixed protagonist designs your a blank state. But cold steel as far as I'm aware is just Rean's Gary Stu Ride. Also generally Falcom's smaller budget limits them.

                no.

Still more choice than most jrpgs. I think the success of BG3 is because people like creating a character and then being part of an epic story, this is also why I think XIV did well.

Real time combat has always been shit too. What which made BG3 such a success was never the combat but the gameplay outside of the combat. Same with the Persona and Pokemon games.

Games are greater than the sum of their parts. This is why deconstructing games is such a fruitless endeavor. You can say a game has "melee combat, building construction, team management" and it might apply to 100 games that are all wildly different from each other.

Ok but no one cares what you think, they were largely unknown before OS1 but once that came out they were a common name in the industry and one of the only if not the only good game to come out of kickstarter.

Maybe you should take a breather and understand that good games sell, regardless of their genre or what you perceive to be popular or unpopular.

I like BG3, but lets not fool ourselves, BG3 is FotM and attracted people due to word of mouth and the bear sex memes
historically, CRPGs do not sell anywhere close to what BG3 sold

Anons, DOS2 sold as much as FF7Remake if not more
Also strange to say BG3 is FotM when it has greater player retention than even Elden Ring. Are you saying Elden Ring was also FotM?

How is it irrelevant? When compared to Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3 held on to more players. Even a month after release, it was still pulling in highs of 400k. That's extremely rare for a single player release, even a AAA one.

because there is more to the game than its combat system. considering square enix is developing it, the game will still be boring jrpg 4 bros in a row turn based shit with zero interesting things to do, shitty side quests, lack of player choice, limited world and so on.
nowadays games selling gangbusters rely on whether there's interesting shit to do in the game. making xvi turnbased won't turn it into BG3 for example. i just dont see squenix having the ambition to make something like that.

Yeah, Capcom is not run by retards, at least for now. Their only full-on case of clinical retardation is sitting on IPs like Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers, but whatever they do put out is usually good (once again, other than the occasional Exoprimal, which I have to guess was done as a joke or some kind of tech demo).

Genuinely what was Square thinking with shit like Forspoken, the botched FFCC Remaster, Foamstars, Babylon's Fall, ect? They've been out-of-touch for a while now.

ff15 is one of the most successful entries in the entire series. ff7r was the huge flop compared. ff16 "failed to meet expectations" because it was a ps5 exclusive and nobody owns a ps5. it will probably blow up once it comes to PC, assuming they don't retard out again and make it epic exclusive like ff7r

        >ff15 is one of the most successful entries in the entire series
A majority of its sales were from 10+ years of expectations. Yes, it was a financial success for them, but it definitely affected people's opinion of Final Fantasy. Also consider that the game was packed with product placement ads like Cup Noodle, Coleman camping shit, Samsung phones, American Express credit cards, their multiplayer expansion was dead on arrival and got shutdown shortly after, and Tabata left Square after this mess.

13 and focusing on so many spinoffs absolutely killed the franchise. 14 1.0 was abysmal too, the fact that 2.0 managed to salvage it is impressive. 15 was terrible and unfinished at launch, in all honestly outside of 14 2.0 Final Fantasy has been complete shit for a long time now. 16 was at least somewhat of a return to form, it was actually a decent game but it felt a bit like it was FF14 Lite. Like how FF12 felt like FF11 Lite.

no lmao. 6 months ago it was millions behind the ps4 during the same point in its lifecycle and I doubt it made up that difference over a summer of nogames. and the console just isn't organically popular in the real world. i don't know how they arrive at their numbers but there's definitely some garden gnomery going on, because despite the alleged "install base" in the tens of millions, ps5 games themselves are seeing abysmal sales, as nobody actually plays games on the system for some mysterious reason. ff15 sold over 10 million copies, so how could a comparable "install base" lead to less than a third of the sales with the next entry? it's not just ff16, it's every game on the console. the console's top seller thus far would barely crack the top 15 list on ps4 despite having an allegedly comparable "install base"

Which is why this quote is always thrown out of context. He was unironically right when he said this. Look at trendies and their reaction to the rise of Japanese games and JRPGs on the switch. A lot reacted negatively because that shit is foreign to them precisely because Nintendo of America (and western gaming as a whole) stamped that shit out in the mid 2000s to late 2010s.

If I'm being honest, technically, western games/RPGs are way better than japanese games/RPGs. Even as shit as Starfield, or as mediocre CP2077 is (it has gotten better), the shit that they created is vastly superior to the more controlled, linear experiences that japanese games tends to have. ToTK and Elden Ring blew up because they offered something that japanese games usually don't have.

                a budget
the best japanese games are all low budget and FF was the JRPG exception but now it's high budget low quality

JRPGs provide a sense of cartoonish, anime-like adventure. A dashing lead character, the girl that will be his wife, his wacky bro, and then a cast of zany cartoon characters to adventure with. That's the appeal. When a good one comes out (once every few years) I still enjoy them as an adult, but I think they're better for kids. Western RPGs tend to be closer to tabletop with the focus being the ability to immerse yourself in the world as closely as possible (i.e. how in bethesda games you can take the oats out of some random barrel). This is more well suited for adults.

as for which is "technically" better, idk what that would even mean

                Anonymous

Japanese games are alot more restrictive with how you, the player, interacts with the world. That is something western games/RPGs is great at. From a technical standpoint a reactive world is so much harder to pull off but the immersion payoff is so much greater. The problem with how Square approach this issue is that, instead of trying to create a much more fun and interactive world, they bank hard on graphics and animation. Something that other games have pulled off much better. It stopped making them standout. It's not the PS2 era anymore. They're no longer at the top of the graphical hierarchy. If they want to get GTA numbers, they should've gone with a more immersive world. Something that people seem to enjoy. I believe, given the proper budget and hardware, MonolithSoft has the potential to elevate JRPGs to another level way more than Square has. I dislike Xeno's combat but I really do love running around in their world. If they can make the world and combat as interactive as ToTK, it'll propel Xeno as the face of the genre, more than muh pwetty gwafix FF. And I say this as an FF fan. I'm just tired of their dumb decisions, again and again.

Damn, agreed on all points anon. You are correct, it is definitely more technically impressive to create dynamic gameplay systems, and that tends to be a thing in western RPGs more than Japanese ones.

Honestly considering the recent successes the 'successful RPG trinity' would be an interactive immersive world, epic story, and self-insertion with romance. This can be done with either a western or japanese aesthetic, because the general audience of today does not care about that

                >This can be done with either a western or japanese aesthetic, because the general audience of today does not care about that
True. It's why it's so frustrating. SE loves to give big budget to an FF title. But they use it for other shit and kept designing the same game from rhe 2000's. XV has all the great ideas, but the execution is just terrible. XVI they dialled back hard. It's literally FFXIII in its design but with action combat. Luckily Clive isn't as annoying as the majority of XIII's characters.

                Anonymous

As an example, if SE were to copy BG3, they will make it look top down, with turn based JRPG combat. Instead of an open style combat approach that people actually liked. That's how dumb they are at trying to imitate successful RPGs

"It's okay when we do" is basically the ideology that the western devs are running on. Especially Sony who censor all kinds of nudity on Playstation except when it comes to their own First Party titles. TLOU 2 can have a sex scene. Other games especially from Japan can not.

It did fine. A lot of JRPGs on the switch sell great. The problem is the reaction some of these games garner from the general group of tendies raised on n64, GameCube, and wii.

The reaction to that quote is what convinced me Ganker really is full of zoomers. Before the Dragon Age/Mass Effect/Oblivion/Fallout 3Witcher 1 era of WRPGs, JRPG's were just calledf "RPG's" the majority of the time.
The JRPG already existed, but it was only about the time of those games that western media started using it as a pejorative to put "actual" western RPGs on a pedestal.

the divide was really apparent early on. Japanese RPGs started taking on a more manga-like quality because they were being made for Japanese nerd audiences, who coincidentally fucking loved manga. Western RPGs were made for western D&D players so they focused on the "role playing" aspect more. I don't remember the first time I heard/used the term JRPG but it was a long time ago, definitely earlier than 2010.

People were hyped for XIII cause everything about it looked amazing.
The graphics were miles ahead of the competition and everyone felt like this could be just like FFX where Square Enix title just dominates the competition in every regard.
Then the game released and it turned out to be a 7/10 linear tunnel crawler. The hype alone sold the game enough to guarantee a sequel. Lightning Returns however only happend cause they needed a filler title to get the last bit of worth out of that old crystal tools engine before retiring it.

Mochizuki seething about FF16 is quite pathetic really. There was likely bigger expectations for it, but the game did fine. It more than likely is more profitable than 15 which had insanely long dev cycle + marketing + tons of side media. Don't forget that square sold FF15 license to some ridiculous mobile game (A new Empire - look it up - its insane) which is likely where a lot of the game's profit came from, not from the actual release of FF15.
FF7R was a cleaner release, but generally sold less. The exclusivity deals for it and 16 were both mistakes, every other jap studio has recognized that appealing to a single platform is no longer viable, capcom, from, etc all enjoyed large growths on PC and to a lesser extent on xbox.
At worst its stagnation for the company as a whole and FF. But the good news is that the new CEO seems more reasonable, FF16 is going to be on steam day 1 when it comes out on PC, no egs exclusivity, and FF14/FF7Remake is getting an xbox release soon.

Betting my house on square enix becoming the next publisher tied to gamepass after EA, Bethesda, ABK and sega. FF7r, FF16 will be gamepass games this time next year. Other releases will be day 1. It's so easy to see at this point.

Part of Sony's exclusivity deals are clauses that forbid games that "benefit" from it from ever ending up on Game Pass specifically.
This has been known since the ABK trial.

They routinely spend exorbitant amounts of money on marketing for pet projects that they can almost immediately. They've already put together this mobile garbage to try to sell to what exceptionally few people haven't caught on to the fact that they kill their mobile games, which had to have cost millions to develop, will never make back a full return on its initial investment, and will also be EOS within less than a year. If these POS side projects were made by an individual who just did an RPG Maker asset flip in a month, this might have been tolerable, but they're always huge budget works for extremely low quality productions that nobody wants to play.

I mean Bethesda might actually do that with fallout because having a second 3d sci fi rpg would just cannibalize each other's modding scenes.

Yeah, that's exactly why I said that they'd probably make it isometric so that it doesn't take as long. Especially since they'd also have to start working on starfield 2 by the time es6 comes out.

If they did that starfield 2 would come out in the mid to late 30's and es7 would come out in the early 40's and fallout 6 would come out in the mid to late 40's.

If you don't see why having a third Bethesda rpg is legi unsustainable (especially since starfield lets them do everything fallout lets them do and more) I don't know what to tell you.

XVI was simply a tremendously low quality game. The game was entirely carried by its big spectacle moments, but the other 95% of the actual gameplay was one of the most shallow and barebones games I've ever played. They gave up every single RPG mechanic in service of the action combat, and the combat turned out to have zero depth to it whatsoever. Every encounter is effectively the same. Attack dodge, blow your cooldowns when needed, blow them all during Stagger.

So...can anyone explain why if 16 flopped, theyre making two expansions for it?

Its not some legal thing, they didnt sell a season pass so they didnt have to just shit out a dlc to not get sued like Forspoken. And if it was cut content it could be condensed down to just one big dlc like XV...

But two? I mean im no businessman but would that not mean xvi is a success worth investing more money into...?

Square probably copes with the flop by hoping the game will sell well on other platforms once the exclusivity period ends and they can just walk off the starting gun kneecap it was in time.
By the time the game comes out on EGS and a year later Steam they can have all the DLCs out, call it an ultimate edition and charge $70-90 for it.

Then trust Square's own quarerly earnings report then chud. XIV is in a worse state than it was two years ago. This was in the quarter ending on June 30 2021, BEFORE the Blizzard lawsuit that brought tons of new people into the game. Endwalker has been such a disaster that it managed to completely wipe away the gains made during the WoW exodus.

This is their latest earnings report. The current revenue for their MMO segment is down to below the state the game was in before the WoW exodus. Not only did Endwalker not manage to keep anyone from that but it managed to lose some of its core players too. Endwalker has been a disaster with the community shitting on the lackluster patch content and patch MSQ left and right.

            Anonymous

that's exactly what they backed down from. initial install = only the first time you install it. they also said they were no longer counting demos, and something about games on gamepass being microsofts responsibility rather than the devs.

though the question remains as to how they're tracking any of this.

Sometimes I think it's best for Square to rotate around their devs much more frequently so that they can be abit more varied in their vision. They kept Nomura and Nojima too long in KH, that they thought making cheap plot twist what makes a good story. They kept Yoshida in XIV for too long that it made him think MMO quest structure and GCD combat are good game design. Someone from the KH team should've told them GCD for abilities is dumb. In an MMO where you can weave in your combos with your party members, sure it can be fun. But doing rotations solo is fucking retarded. But I have to say, the reaction based inputs like counter and parry in XVI is so fun to pull off. If KH has the same system and proper balancing, 4 could potentially be as good as 2.

The thing with FF is that they're too much of a pussy to straight up abandon their turn based gays. They still think they need to water down their combat because they want some of those turm based gays to try their game and hopeylly liking it. It's absolutely fucking retarded. They kept pussy-footing it for a decade and it killed any potential. Also, who the fuck thought MMO sidequest for content is a good idea? I'd rather XVI be short but kept the pacing of the demo.

    >FF IS DYING
Anon, FF has been dead for years. There was a point in time where Final Fantasy was a household name. Everyone had FF6 and FF7. But then FF13 flushed the IP down the toilet.
Look at this fucking chart. FF6 sold more than 3x as much as FF16, and that's NOT adjusting for inflation. If you adjust for inflation... $50 in 1994 would be worth $103 in 2023. FF6 made over six times the money FF16 did.
And that's just revenue. FF6 didn't have a retardedly inflated budget like FF16 did, so FF6 generated a ridiculous amount of profit (while FF16 is current net negative profit). I would love to see a chart of each game's net profit, but unfortunately that information isn't public.

It's literally because the people are still in the phase of "they might correct XIII's mistake" and also, it's during the peak of open world. Since FF is an old af franchise, people see it as an evolution. XVI for some reason went backwards in that aspect. Not that I want an open world, but fuck me do they need better people designing their map. It's fucking ridiculous how their map design is still stuck in the early ps2 era. Fuck, even FFXII have better map design than XVI. That fucker from XIII that they brought to design XVI's map should've been kicked out of the company. anon your own chart shows that 13 is above the middle mark for the franchise and every entry on that chart after 13 (not counting its own spinoffs/side stories) continued to sell even higher numbers.

and if we're talking chronoligically, an FFMMO2 expansion was the last thing they released before FF7R and FF16 flopped. I don't think it was a previous entry in the series that caused these flops either way. I think it was bad marketing and business decisions on their part, notably their playstation and EGS timed exclusivity. i'm sure the wider modern streamer fotm culture and constant "tortanic" doomposting of every big new release on every social media site also doesn't help.

            >7R had fantastic combat
i hated it. enemies ignore your party and only aggro you. Magic is clunky, there's one enemy in the sewer that was really annoying because it could only be reliably killed by magic, but it also used an unpredictable teleporting move. I know you can "git gud", I've seen the cuhrazy no hit runs and shit. I just don't want to git gud at it like I do with other games because it's not satisfying.

SE was unironically inclining for years, this year doing less doesnt mean bankrupcy.

No, of course not. In a year the stock will be back up even higher than before. It's just amusing that the smug gay thought Square Enix would have unending growth as if they were on the level of Capcom or FromSoft. Verification not required.

    FF16 actually made some money.

Wanna know why their numbers are shit?
    -Balan Wonderworld
    -Babylons Fall
    -The Quiet Man
    -Harvestella
    -Chocobo GP
    -Valkyria Elysium
    -Diofield Chronicles
    -Forspoken
    -NEO TWEWY

    Only to name a few.
The problem isn't FF16 only selling 3 million on a dead platform. The problem is having a huge number of very expensive projects all make no money whatsoever. None of the games pulled in players. Years of development time and money wasted entirely. This is whats killing SE

CAPCOM and Bandai keep bragging about their old titles pulling in huge numbers every year. One Steam sale is enough to make the quarter look decent but Square Enix doesn't have the same bonus as they constantly release trash that nobody wants to buy even at a huge discount.

It's called trust, anon. After making shit after shit, then NFTs, AI remake of an old text based game that no one liked, spitting on FFVII's legacy, you'd think people would trust them to make a good game? XVI is just decent. Decent is not enough to bring back confidence. Unless VIIReb getting 90's across the board, I'd expect it to sell just well around the same ball park as XVI. Or even less. You fags might disagree, but trailer view count is indicative of interest. And VIIRebirth initial trailer floats around just about the same view count as XVI. And that is pretty scary.

Square Enix has to be the most sterotypically "we are just clueless greedy old Japs" company in the entire world.
    Let's list it:
    >mismanage Final Fantasy, no one knows what the series is about anymore
    >try to pander to westerners with games like Forspoken and blindly follow ESG bullshit
    >follow every single soulless corporate AAA gaming trend possible
    >buy Eidos, then sell it years later for 300 million to Embracer, then they spend the money on a shitty NFT project everyone hated and was a total failre
    >btw Embracer sold JUST the Tomb Rider rights to amazon for 600 mil, so twice as much
    >still go for timed exclusivity with Snoy when the true money is in being multiplat nowadays
    >have a surprise hit game in NieR: Automata developed by Platinum, what do they do? never hire Yoko Taro for a big project again, NieR is only used for spin-off/low budget marketing projects or remaster at best and Platinum were hired to create a GaaS cashgrab title that was even more DoA than anyone expected, with 100 peak players in it's entire few month lifetime after which they shut down the servers

Is there anything else i forgot?

I honestly believe that companies like EA or Ubisoft pat themselves on the back every day that even if they are hated by the public, at least they are not as fucking bad as Squeenix. And there is nothing anyone can do to fix them at this point.

    Yoship is literally right.
Nobody called fucking Mario RPG a JRPG. Or even FF6. It was just a RPG like all the other games.

Only when AAA started exploding with Bioware and Bethesda selling millions did people start using the terms WRPG and JRPG everywhere. Because WRPGs are big ambitious projects that push the media forward while JRPGs are backwards uninspiring titles that stick to the rules of the past and don't innovate in any way.

This kind of thinking is what got us the Capcom dark age when Inafune went full retard and went "Japan cannot make big games anymore we need our own Oblivion our own Call of Duty our own Halo" and so we ended up getting trash like DmC, Lost Planet 3 and Resident Evil 6.

One different aspect between JP and Western develop philosophy is that for West, games are more than games. The evolution should be that you would feel that you live in the game world. Where boundaries between real and fiction would blur. The Japanese don't get it that's why their game feel "stuck". They're just that, games, instead of living, breathing world.
When Elden Ring released you could see some Western devs criticizing the inventory stuff being on screen all the time. It would distract them from "being in the game". This is also why a lot of people chud out because they want to "be a woman" in the realest sense possible
