People forget that Japan had their own massive cultural revolution where a huge number of shrines, temples, ancient scrolls and castles were destroyed all for the sake of "modernization"

        >This movement, known as haibutsu kishaku in Japanese, led to the destruction of numerous Buddhist temples and the ejection of Buddhist priests from positions of power. In some areas, almost all the Buddhist temples—sometimes numbering more than a thousand in a single region—were destroyed or seriously damaged
        >All castles, along with the feudal domains themselves, were turned over to the Meiji government in the 1871 abolition of the han system. During the Meiji Restoration, these castles were viewed as symbols of the previous ruling elite, and nearly 2,000 castles were dismantled or destroyed.

Very little scholarship has been done on this in English as many people don't know about it, dont know how bad it was (ignorance) and it was too long ago.

Thanks. There are ample amount of sources in Korean. It's called 廃仏毀釈.
          https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%ED%8F%90%EB%B6%88%ED%9B%BC%EC%84%9D

The English translation of the given Korean text is as follows:
Shortly after the Meiji Restoration, State Shinto was established. Under the idea that Japan is a divine country based on State Shinto, which elevates the authority of the Emperor, Buddhism and Shugendo, which were at odds with this idea, were oppressed. Buddhism somehow managed to get by thanks to its thick layer of Shinto followers, but Shugendo could not and was virtually completely subjugated to Buddhism.
This was the period in Japanese Buddhism when married priests and meat-eating completely settled into the form of modern Japanese Buddhism and became commonplace. Before that, they had created interpretations and arguments to ideologically justify themselves, as there were things that were troublesome (?), and there were many monks who did not marry, but after this time, there was none of that, and the idea that "Japanese monks = absolute monarch freely eating meat while having a wife and children" became completely popularized and entrenched, as seen in Japanese anime.
However, even now, in many Zen sect temples, there are often restrictions on meat-eating and marriage depending on the denomination, and even in the denominations where married life and meat-eating have completely spread, during periods of spiritual training, they often eat only ascetic cuisine without meat and practice asceticism.[7]

Incidentally, even before the Meiji Restoration, there was a persecution (?) by Oda Nobunaga. However, at that time, there were reasons for that. Originally, Japan was a country where Buddhism was strong, and regardless of whether it was the imperial family, aristocrats, or warriors, they favored Buddhism and donated land to temples, which used it as a base to raise monk soldiers. By the time of Emperor Shirakawa, Emperor Shirakusa himself cited the three things that he could not control with his own power: the flow of a river, the luck of a pair of dice, and the monk soldiers of Enryakuji, the leading temple of the time, to the extent that the power of the monk soldiers had become so strong.[8] Naturally, the problem of monk soldiers and Buddhism as a whole became so serious that they could not be controlled to the same extent as truly uncontrollable things like natural phenomena and the luck of gambling. When the Sengoku period began, large temples became independent forces based on their territories and monk soldiers. It would have been fine if it had just ended with this, but with those forces, they fought against other sects, fought against daimyo, sent monk soldiers as mercenaries, and plundered the people. Oda Nobunaga, unable to stand this nonsense, pushed down Enryakuji, which was the most opposed to Oda among them.[9] Of course, there were voices of concern, such as Akechi Mitsuhide, but Oda just went ahead, saying that the people would want it.[10]

In the end, Enryakuji, which even Emperor Shirakawa could not lay a hand on, was attacked by Oda. Even at this time, they showed absurd behavior, with many monks coming out of the temple not even properly dressed with women. In response to this nonsense, Oda ordered all the monks coming out of Enryakuji to be killed.[11] In the end, Enryakuji was completely burned down and disappeared.[12] In addition, the Jodo Shinshu sect was also a target of attack, and during the subjugation process, his younger brother was killed in battle, causing him to say that he would destroy up to three families, resulting in many apostates. In the end, they were also shattered like Enryakuji.

All of those were destroyed by Americans and earthquakes.
Only Buddhist temples were destroyed during modernization.
