They do, and the damage mitigation isn't enough to match the speed and utility bosses get. They're far too sporadic. Either they need to be slowed down or their fastest attacks need to stop doing over half your HP.

wrong, put the dragoncrest greatshield talisman and use decent armor and you'll trade just fine against certain attacks, even better if you use endure/stamp to tank the strongest ones

It's probably because they got into the games after DeS/DaS1 and fell for the difficulty meme and, like Miyazaki, they completely forgot or simply don't realise what made the older games better.

Elden Ring is legit an asset flip slop fest, the most 7/10 open world game I could ever imagine being produced. The game is a slop fest and the open world is nothing special, just like Skyrim you run through zero content fields to get to the actual content dungeons. Fast travel in games has been a cardinal sin for years and that along with the horse removes any commitment to the world as you can just double jump past enemies to get the item then frick off. The issues flaws with the game are too numerous to count it's insane. 8 unique bosses out of 165, I legit cannot believe it, less unique bosses than Dark Souls 1 made in 2011 KEK.

I don't expect a casual player to be like those streamers but theses runs serve as proof that there's openings for just about any weapon and playstyle. You don't NEED to learn every single fight hitless, but you certainly can learn any one boss well enough to have no issues resonably beating it.

and some bosses just have a 'no' button that they randomly (or input-readingly) push to frick you out of those openings

nta but a lot of people will not use openings because they are too scared and spend a lot more time fighting a boss waiting for very specific openings and then go online to complain about the bosses not having enough openings or going "when is my turn to play???".

That probably does occur but that doesn't make Margit spam good design
It doesn't make the trial-and-error, die to the boss 10+ times to learn which openings are real or not, good design either

They do, and the damage mitigation isn't enough to match the speed and utility bosses get. They're far too sporadic. Either they need to be slowed down or their fastest attacks need to stop doing over half your HP.

Most people don't get 60 Vigor since the softcap is 40, so they would have 1450 HP instead of 1900 HP, a full 31% more HP than most people who didn't even neglect HP would have.

And full Vagabond Knight armor is pretty good regardless of being "starter" gear. That's 26.1% physical damage negation, Bull Goat is the highest with 38.5% and most dedicated soldier knight armor is 26.5%. If you so much as go for fashion for one armor piece or use more weapons/a shield, ending up at that level of phys reduction is about expected.

So given that you have 31% more HP and barely survived 3 hits with probably 200 HP or less, most people would just flat out get 3 shot. Possibly 2 shot on some of the bigger hits. And that's if they make Vigor possibly tied for their highest leveled stat, while wearing metal armor and scraping toward heavy equip load.

sure but again that's with only armor and nothing else to help. Realistically as long as you don't get 2-shot, you can take a hit, panic heal and tank the boss' "frick you for panic healing" move. Anyone can equip the ritual shield talisman and use the speckled hard tear and you're already taking way less damage.

                Anonymous

Being 2-shot isn't too crazy. There's also the fact that most of the enemies are attacking with variable length combos, so if you get hit, heal, and get hit by the "frick you for healing" move, you then heal again and are down 2 flasks, and still in a condition where you're liable to die in one enemy combo.

I don't feel like any other Souls game has you close to this fragile, and they don't have enemies that do close to this much damage this fast with openings to heal/attack being this ambiguous due to most attack strings being variable length instead of something like a canned 3 hit combo.

You're right that you're much more fragile in ER compared to previous souls games, but you also have way more tools to deal with it, both offensively and defensively.
I do agree that late game damage feels too high for a casual player, but they'd have to nerf player damage to balance it out with how ridiculous buff stacking is.

                Anonymous

I don't really think so, you are always still way more fragile than if you half-interacted with defensive mechanics of other Souls games. Things like upgrading armor or lifegems or the rally system are way more easy to do/use than praying a talisman reduces the damage-to-die by one hit (in a combo-heavy game), or other once-per-bonfire consumables.

I also just don't like buff stacking. I don't think the casual player interacts with it as much either. Balancing around multiplicative buff stacking just feels terrible to me, like my most fun playthrough was easily going with bloodhound step, whip, and blasting Castlevania music. But the game is not designed well around it at all later on.

That's fair but I do wonder how FromSoft considers it when balancing. Just the basic golden vow ash + flame grant me strenght + appropriate tears & talisman is so easy to use I can't imagine they assume a completely unoptimised player when balancing bosses. Hell determination is right there in limgrave, so are the charged attack talisman and tear. These 3 alone are a huge damage boost and can easily carry you through the game, especially if you pick up any STR weapon. I get that a brand new player wouldn't know to do that but it's so blatant that I worry from balances around a hypothetical "decently optimised player".
On the other hand you do like this webm and it's funny.

Most of those buffs feel frustrating to use. Golden Vow AoW requires 40 FP, a weapon it's equipped to in order to cast it after swapping to it, and lasts 45s for an +11.5% damage increase. Flame Grant Me Strength requires 15 Faith, a spell slot, a seal equipped and swapped to, 28 FP, and last 30s for a +20% phys/fire damage increase.

That's a lot to cycle through and have on hand, and probably only ever used on a boss at the cost of using other moves/spells less. If you go crazy with roars and charged attack buffs, it mostly just makes the game less fun because you don't really play it much. You are way better off just landing The Big Hit, and who cares if you get hit some on the way. I'd way rather the game incentivized good reflexes and timing by finding openings to stay aggressive through instead of unga bunga smash through.

I'll have to disagree, a dagger with GV and godricks's GR or the faith talisman is easy to slot in and if you're at the level of having a buff routine, the time & FP don't really matter as you're most likely killing the boss before the expire, or fats enough that it doesn't matter

You're right, though there are cases where it's completely safe to go for a guard counter against them, regardless of their current poise. Just not that combo. It's also not terribly hard to know when he's 1 hit away from stagger if you're using something like square off that can break his poise in ~4-5 hits. But iirc in that webm, it was just dumb luck.

No one inherently knows these things, because for some reason unlike Sekiro or Nioh, they don't want to show you enemy stance amounts, and you don't even know how much each of your attacks would do. Or when the enemy is regenerating stance.

It is not a reliable metric without having already dug incredibly deep into the game, which most people will not spoil themselves on for the first playthrough, and usually not even go back and do that on later replays.

I don't know why they wouldn't just make it visible when Sekiro did and that's by the same exact people, released before Elden Ring.

Are you kidding me? It's just another gauge under health bars, and if people suddenly saw that one move moves that bar 6 times more than the other move on that same weapon, yeah they would like to know that.

Sure you don't know that your first time but you should get a feel about it just from playing . Especially if you keep dying to a boss and start getting consistent staggers while practicing. And if you played any souls game before and knew a bit about poise, it should be fairly straightforward to deduct the general stance mechanics. You don't know the numbers but you learn that medium enemies tend to stagger after 3 big hits.

I don't think there's much of a way to inherently learn that because there's no reason to guess that a straight sword and an axe would be the exact same stance damage, and that an R1 from them is 5, but a full charged R2 is 30. Likewise, a colossal greatsword is 15 with R1, but only 36 with a full charged R2. And even with that info, hell if I know how much stance any individual enemy has or how long until they start regenerating it.

                Anonymous

You focus too much on numbers. It might not be the most obvious thing for casters and dex builds but if you're doing a STR build in particular, it quickly becomes very obvious that big hits consistently staggers enemies in 2-3 attacks.
                >jump attack a basic foot soldier with a mace
                >it always staggers after 1
                >jump attack a Godrick soldier with a mace
                >it always staggers after 2
                >jump attack a Godrick knight with a mace
                >it always staggers after 3
That was my experience just farming a bit at Gatefront Ruins

                Anonymous

Most people don't use a mace, but a jump R1 with one is 9 and a jump R2 is 24. Most basic grunts have 30 posture, and could just as easily die in 2 jumping R2s.

They also regain stance if not attacked for around 5 seconds, which a lot of enemies attack strings (especially the very mobile ones) can be longer than that. Like it's just extremely easy to not know the best way to exploit it because nothing is visible about how much you do, how much they have, and when they recover it.

But knowing it can make the game way easier, so it really should be signposted more for being such a huge universal mechanic. Like it's more universally applicable than parries/ripostes are.

The amount of poise damage taken by a boss constantly changes depending on its states and doesn't guarantee a stagger either way because of superarmored moves that overrule it. No stance bar would be an accurate representation

Sekiro also doesn't represent stagger either, it's just the real healthbar, and most bosses "stagger" once or twice, so you are not using that info to make any combat choice. Sekiro enemies only suffer histun which is also dependant on the moment to moment animation the boss is in.

The problem with this gay and especially the spear ones, is the game designers intentionally made them attack directly at the fixed camera when locked on.

This makes it hes to assess how far away the blade is and you easily get stabbed.

It’s the designers not making a difficult enemy, it’s them attacking the base mechanics of the game and making an enemy that exploits it. This ruins the immersion severely and shows the slack design of combat in elden ring.

No, I meant that instead of designing enemies that are challenging/fun they design enemies that specifically take advantage of the ONE camera angle they give you.

There’s a myriad of other frustrations, such as enemies that have one lock-on point located at the back of their body, which is great for magic but shit for melee.

If you play a magic build the game becomes massively easy. It was plain to see the bias against melee.

ER doesn't force you to roll for everything, either. You can roll vs. most attacks, but you generally don't have to and will get a better reward for using a more appropriate defensive option.

I don't understand what this means. I switch between lock on and off all the time and never notice any difference in enemy accuracy. If I can strafe something while unlocked, I can always also do it while locked on.

Not only is there a 100 ms delay in inputs in all fromsoft games and not only is there a 100 ms extra delay forced on the player because sprint is bound to the wrong button by default, but there's also an input queue bug which is in all fromsoft games which causes your character to throw out your last input before you were hit

                >input queue bug which is in all fromsoft games which causes your character to throw out your last input before you were hit
I don't think that's a bug, just badly designed. The input queue is supposed to help you do what you input before the stun so you don't have to madly mash the button. In practice though you change your mind during the stun so you end up doing what you wanted to do a second ago instead of what you want to do now.

the dodge on release isn't really a problem per se, it's the fact that the game has to wait and see if it should sprint instead. If we had a dedicated roll button and spritn was on a different button it wouldn't be an issue.

Torrent has a hidden HP bar that you can heal with berries. If he dies after being resummoned and tanking hits you'll have to use a flask to revive him until the next bonfire. Unless you're tormenting the poor soul you'll only see this in maybe the fire giant during normal playthroughs because torrent is going to objectively eat a bunch of trash lid slams during that fight.

You could just throw all that shit in a rice cooker and cook the shrimp last, but if you're gonna do that, you want to double up on the seasoning, usually.
You could always just do like stirfry and use day old rice. Also I would use bacon fat if you're throwing shrimp and garlic in there.
Also, protip: Try adding like half a teaspoon of Önion powder, a very small amount of cumin, or just use Knorr brand powder chicken stock .

    >New souls games: you will be allowed to kill this boss after you memorize every single attack, pattern, counter, mix-up, delay and counter to your counters. Fighting is more about knowing when wind-ups are finished because attack animations themselves are typically too fast to react to unless you know it's coming.
there is a reason why older souls games are considered better than new ones.

this is misinformation. you're absolutely able to intuit new boss design id say 85% of the time. sometimes they overtune like fricking waterfowl but almost always its fair. if you see an enemy raise their foot it means theyre gonna stomp and you can punish that with a jumping heavy. if theyre tail swiping roll it the first time then jump it the second to give yourself an advantage. big wind up charges like margits meme bash can literally be circle strafed, wailing on him the whole time.

its the same as before, you're just expected to actually read the animation instead of just reading that they're doing an animation.

        >you're absolutely able to intuit new boss design id say 85% of the time
Your percentage is only accurate if you include all the copy-paste bosses that are just regular enemies with boss bars, but even if it was accurate that still leaves a significant amount of the game that's unnecessary, and fatiguing, trial and error shit instead of actual skill

Neither, you just don't know how health scaling works in this game.

          This person:

          [...]
Damage isn't that high on any one normal hit. Of course combos, big telegraphed attacks and grabs will do more but you can still survive just fine.
          Here's an exemple against Godfrey
          >vagabond armor
          >60 vig
          >no defensive talisman, flaks or buffs
I hate making 4mb webms, this shit is 1.5x speed just to fit

          and this person

          >not mentioning great runes, easily the most powerful buffs in the entire game

have the exact same amount of points in vigor (60), and yet there's a nearly 1000 HP difference between them. The second person has more than 50% the HP, even with identical vigor.

So then your only argument that could possibly make any sense is "well no one would put 60 points into vigor at that point in the game" to which I would say you're extremely wrong, because there's almost nothing else worth really putting levels into once you reach stat minimums. Putting any points into damage stats is totally and completely worthless until around mountaintops, when you can actually benefit from it.

tl;dr, you're both unfamiliar with how the game works and how to play it effectively

Also, "before doing leyndell" is I assume meant to be intentionally misleading, because while its technically true, its physically right next to it, and you'll do leyndell immediately after it.

          >Most people don't get 60 Vigor since the softcap is 40
There are two softcaps. Playing the game under a false premise is no one's fault but your own. Your math is also based on a lot of other false premises but I'm not interested in bothering to correct you.

Around lvl 150 seems fine, the DLC will use a sekiro style system for dealing damage so it doesn't matter too much
      >Also should I commit to an ending or is there a chance the dlc could add some more?
You should kill Fire Giant but don't go progress after that, keep melina alive since she'll most likely have dialogue for the DLC (you can even hear her in the trailer)
Also you should probably leave Malenia alive as well

If you never did it, try a challenge run of your choice. It doesn't have to be anything extreme, just something different to force yourself to learn a bit. Hell watch a youtube video of said challenge and try to replicate it. Sometimes it's not a skill issue but a knowledge issue. Just knowign about cool things you can do is enough to massively improve.

      >The amount of poise damage taken by a boss constantly changes depending on its states and doesn't guarantee a stagger either way because of superarmored moves that overrule it
If you mean in ER, that's wrong about the variable poise damage. Hyperarmor and blocking does massively reduce or ignore posie damage, and the poise reset timer can be tricky to manage when a boss is spazzing out if you don'T know about the throwing knife trick. You can use ER Tools or similar to check a boss's poise and it is consistent. See https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lmOqCKLdk6_W7nbYqT44HJNnhoRwtHvYjigpCKDsO4w/edit#gid=1771126570 for exact weapon numbers

I get that the game doesn't really explain that there's a sekiro-like invisible stance meter for every boss, but is it really necessary to refer to a standard game mechanic as a "trick"?

          Anonymous

What else would you call it? That's exactly the kind of thing you'd read in the "tips & tricks" section 15 years ago.

            Anonymous

Yeah I guess, but ironically that's a good example of what I mean, that tips and tricks section would be (as was characteristic with these sorts of guides) telling people "use throwing knives to help stance break bosses!" rather than actually explaining the stance mechanic and how it works, leading the reader to understand the system behind it rather than giving the false impression that it has anything to do with throwing knives (even if they are arguably the best ranged pressure option for melee).

But I'm just being unnecessarily autistic now.

oh no you can survive 3 whole hits this invalidates everything I've ever said.

            >wearing starter armor, zero buffs at all whatsoever

I loved DS1, it's one of my favorite games of all time, and I really enjoy Elden Ring, but DS3 is just insanely mid to me. They nerfed shields into the ground and eliminated poise so it plays exactly like Bloodborne but they still want to pretend it's a Souls game. DS1 is slow and methodical and your character is perfectly built for the challenges of the world (not counting Bed of Chaos and how overtuned Manus is in the DLC), Elden Ring is full of bullshit enemies but gives you a lot of bullshit to throw back at the enemies in response. DS3 is just a rollspam simulator where you have to be precise and on paper you have a lot of tools, but none of them are better than basic b***h R1 attacks because the game clearly wants you to play it one way.

Oh, and the aesthetic is bad too, they made so many of the enemies disgusting to look at, all the environments are grey. So many areas just blend together because they couldn't be bothered to distinguish them visually at all.

Bed of chaos isn't really a "build" boss, it's all about those fricking swipes pushing you off. It's as much of a pain at level 1 than at level 200.

that's not the boss poise that changes, it's a modifier on poise damage dealt

I don't understand which poise modifier you're talking about. Hyperarmor disregards poise and "defensive" actions will obviously reduce poise damage just like it reduces hp damage (for example, a knight blocking, or when Godrick cuts his arm to transition to phase 2 he take reduced damage), but otherwise they always take the same amoutn from attacks.

Ok, it didn't seem to like that's what you were talking about. Hyperarmor can be a b***h but aside from Malenia it's rarely a problem in my experience. Bosses taking reduced poise damage when they block or obviously take less damage seems like fair game to me.
That said, how would that make a stance bar difficult to implement? Literally just map it the boss' stance value and make it turn grey during hyperarmor. The modifier has no impact on said bar.

                Anonymous

I never said it would be hard, I said it would be pointless because knowing the poise bar of the enemy has no use if the reliability to hit and cause stagger is still not a given due to how hyperarmor works, would just generate confusion.

It's not an odd decision at all.
The only thing it delays is starting the sprint, and it does that because running instantly would be insanely OP, but it also adds the perk that any player running can instantly dodge too using the same button

Not only is there a 100 ms delay in inputs in all fromsoft games and not only is there a 100 ms extra delay forced on the player because sprint is bound to the wrong button by default, but there's also an input queue bug which is in all fromsoft games which causes your character to throw out your last input before you were hit

Does the dodge come out slower than if it occurred when the button was pressed?

it doesn't come any slower than the time you need to input it

                >input queue bug which is in all fromsoft games which causes your character to throw out your last input before you were hit
I don't think that's a bug, just badly designed. The input queue is supposed to help you do what you input before the stun so you don't have to madly mash the button. In practice though you change your mind during the stun so you end up doing what you wanted to do a second ago instead of what you want to do now.

                >The input queue is supposed to help you do what you input before the stun
No, the input que can help
                1. Recover from stuns at the earliest avaiable time by queing a roll
                2. Combo without autisticaally learning the exact timing inbetween each attack
                3. Recover from knockdown asap
It only performs actions after a stun if they are given an input while or after you get hit

Dodge on release is bad because it introduces an additional delay between my command and the execution of the dodge, thus making me dodge slower, and with less precision, in a game that demands both accuracy and speed.

Guys I'll be honest, I watched bunch of GinoMachino's videos and spent a while practicing his stuff. It's beyond me comprehension how someone can be so good at these games.
What really broke me is how he can fit a cheeky hit on Malenia between her 2nd and 3rd attack during waterfowl, all hitless.

I mean, he grinds the game for a living and has been doing so for years
I enjoy his content and improving at the game myself but I know I can't be bothered to get to that level of autismo
