*full refund if you purchased through the Google Play store. Get it right.

Now that's cool that they're doing that, but I'd like to know what percentage of hardware was bought through the store before I get all warm inside over their generosity.

Can you even buy stadia shit in stores? I got a "play and watch" pack for free(shipping and everything) because I had YouTube premium which was the $100 pack that came with the controller and a google cast 4k with 6 months of premium and it was through the play store and I had no idea stadia had such a pack until I got the email about getting the pack for free and I frequented tech stores at the time.

It would have been better to just focus on the hardware under the Oculus brand with a standard gaming storefront, and let others figure out how to further monetize. Being the first-to-market isn't always a good thing, especially in a new technology paradigm, how many of the early leaders of the internet are still leaders and profitable? Facebook itself is a good example of how being later can actually be a good thing.

Microsoft made an actual games console that that was legitimalely really powerful in comparison to the other shit on the market at the time, they also already had a bit of a presense in the PC gaming market because their OS was the best to run and develop games on and they published/own the rights to a few PC only franchies like Mechwarriors and Flight Sim.

Microsoft also has their own original IPs and a wide range of good exclusives, mostly Halo, that enticed all sorts of gamers into buying the Xbox console. They should've brought Bioware

The problem with Stadia is that its only selling point was """"accessibility"""" via streaming which is an issue in of itself and largely pointless thanks to Xbox's play anywhere and Steams remote play. They also had 0 original content so there was no incentive to ever try out Stadia.

Amazon games failed because Amazon themselves suck ass, the actual devs are fine but due to coporate trend chasing and not willing to properly invest in their properties if they aren't instantly viral their shit continuously fails, or fails because of coporate meddling.

because with Gamepass you download the entire game and is lauched locally. No streaming or lag, because your console is rendering the software, Gamepass is just a online key.

If you mean VR, the answer is that Oculus is a loss leader. Zucc is pouring Facebook money into selling headsets at cost price or maybe even at a loss in order to corner the emerging VR market. And it works, if you look at Steam stats, 2/3 headsets out there are from Oculus, with half of all sets being Quest 2.

Google could've succeeded if they had a similar approach, for example having a good selection of free games come with the subscription, like Game Pass but with streaming. It's not like they don't have the money for it.

One of the reasons Stadia bombed was a moronic business model (having to buy games instead of a single subscription that geta you entire library), Netflix probably won't make the same mistake.
That still leaves the issues of no games and infrastructure though

They already launched the service and it's basically just apple arcade but on Android too.

Apple Arcade is seriously great for comfy gaming, 99.9% of good indie games also come out on mobile and they will be grabbed by Apple.

it's so much worse than that. at least with netflix, you can watch anything they have when you pay the subscription. stadia was paying the subscription so you could BUY THE GAME. and that purchase didn't transfer over to steam, or a console, or anything. they would literally hold your games hostage forever, requiring constant payments on them.

Videogame streaming is going to have it's day in the hay sometime.
Reality is this was just another way for google to build proprietary information in their company that they'll have to utilize in the future as the backbone on how to handle similar projects. They do this a ton just to stay relevant and have their hands in the pie of any and everything technical related they can.
Just like Google Fiber being a big thing for them.
They wanted that experience on making big infrastructure changes in determining how easy it is to get the upper hand in business dealing with network providers.
They never intended for it to go nationwide because it was always just about having their hand in the pie too.

I uses Stadia since June 2020. I got to play 30-40 games in all that time, and they are refunding me for EVERYTHING. I got to play all those games for free.

Is Google even relevant in tech scene?

        Anonymous

Not anymore. Once it was the lead in AI tech (circa 2010) and lossy compression (circa 2010 too). Nowadays, it is mostly relevant for ads, political suppression of news and youtube videos, ads on youtube video, and that's it. Even their translation tech is failing behind. To the Russian search engine of all things, and also to Deepl.

Also there are some Linux kernel coders that are paid by Google to do some Google stuff, but they're mostly keeping it all in-house and not in the kernel tree, because their ideas aren't easily integrable and wholly about Android. Also their ideas are often bad. Not badly implemented, just not being natural. They're basically just coding whatever is useful in whatever way without care, sometimes ask Linus to integrate it back, gets a slap in the face because frick no, and goes on their merry way. Not bad people, but Google obviously doesn't really care about Linux dev.

Google Colab has some sway over machine learning and machine learning learning today still. It is used by students and teachers of the field to teach and develop AI. I would say Colab it is the entire relevance Google has in the tech industry nowadays.

I’m seeing a lot of angry devs who had ports to Stadia scheduled for the next couple of months getting pissed off that they found out about this through Twitter and not through direct e-mails. So Google are still finding ways to frick Stadia up now.

    >Google returns the money
    >Everybody who bought Stadia gets full refunds
    >People literally got free controllers out of the deal they can use long after Stadia
    >Games they bought they can just purchase elsewhere for cheaper on sale years later now after they launched
This looks like a clear W for google at pulling the plug. I don't remember the last time an experiment people invested millions into ended up failing and the guys behind it coming out as clean as Google here.
Reality is worldwide infrastructure just isn't ready for streaming games, and with capitalist corruption at the highest level in all of our media broadcasting utility companies Stadia missed the mark by 2 decades, at least. If not more, considering the speeds needed for it is what the Media companies promised us in the late 90s would happen by today. Before it just funneled into their yacht funds.
