Welch and Precis are the only real requirments for a busted team. You can use anyone else you want sans Ashton because he's hot garbage now.
What's broken about them?
Welch's reworked killer move comes out fast and has very short delay before it can be used again, that makes rapid flick and slappity slap lets you break and destroy enemy near instantly.
Precis' forcefield wasn't nerfed like every other skills like Chisato's 100k volt and tear gas, so she can still spam the fuck out of it.
Then their post game weapons are insane. Welch's has 100% accuracy with 1 male in party, immunity to stagger with 2 male, and near-guaranteed capped 9999 atk with 3 male.
Precis' has +200% damage to special attack, +200% SP cost, but can use HP instead of SP. Given you can use factor to put HP drain on weapon, the drawback is basically nonexistent.

Precis is battlefield control and fills a role no one else can. The AI is really good at using her too.
Welch can stunlock and DPS like a monster with her best skills. She starts shit when you first get her but that's a bait, once you get Slappity Slap and Rapid Flick and the right equipment she becomes the best character period.

This has stood out to me. Other AI partners will get their skulls caved in fight after fight on Universe meanwhile Precis is walking out with full HP even before post-fight healing kicks in.
What are the best combos for AI Precis? Been using Frankenrobbie > Forcefield a lot.

So far everyone ive messed with has become pretty busted so you cant really go wrong, opera/precis are easy picks though, opera especially with her gravity move is great for pulling multiple mobs in for everyone else to wail on at once. Precis is just damn good and forcefield's after effect is very handy as well as jsut being a very safe spam move

It really isn't a big deal if you're not too far, you can unlock Enlightenment far earlier (and Fol is unbelievably easy to come by, no real reason to worry about losing out on that).
Game will dump BP on you so wouldnt worry too much about it, but hit is not something i had much issue with in the main game

He doesnt get a guest period if that's what you mean. Once he's in he's in far as i know and if you refuse him then try to walk back to him he forces himself in, so if you want to get the chests behind him youll need to elave completely then go back, bless fast travel

this is a good way to say it, but everyone should keep in mind that it is possible to lose Opera even after her Guest period is over. if you meet Ernest at the Hoffman Ruins and refuse to let him join, then Opera will leave too. (if you want Opera but don't want Ernest, make sure you DON'T do the event in the Sacred Forest where you visit Opera's crashed ship.)

I've been thinking about playing this after my Rena run and was curious. For my first playthrough, who should I pick insofar as optional party members?
Each run only has 1 optional character. JJ for Raymond and Theo for Lettuce. JJ is unique play style but can deal some crazy damage
I could never get good with JJ, attack timings for enemies are strange.
How's Theo? I'm gunna do a Lettuce run sometime soon.
Honestly, the easiest way to use JJ is to completely ignore his gimmick and just spam his strongest attack after casting the buff. He's also completely useless in the hands of the AI.
Really good projectiles for crowd control, massive stagger on Peerless Nightmare, theoretically great for def debuffing but it almost never lands for me. Annoyingly most of his physical skills have an unique and severe damage penalty for not staying at max range, and you're inevitably going to move closer than that during a combo, so you'll probably end up using Meteor Strike and whatever chuuni name he gave his Dragon Roar the majority of the time.

Claude mode with Rena, Celine, Ashton, Precis, Welch, Leon and Chisato was my pick. I think you should always go for either Ashton + Precis + Welch or Opera + Ernest + Bowman. Ashton, Precis and Welch have PAs together and teach other skills.

Claude, Chisato, Opera, and then Player's Choice. Ernest can be good for crowd control. Bowman is kinda okay. Precis is also good fitting into this comp, and so is Welch.

What is this game like? I'm currently playing the demo and it's reminding me a decent bit of Octopath of which I got baited into buying after playing the demo for its sequel. I really tried to like it but I struggled and eventually gave up. JRPG are so hit-and-miss for me, the other 'newer' JRPG I played a while back was DQ11 which I really enjoyed. Most modern JRPG don't look interesting to me but I hope this one is good.

It really doesn't. This game came out 2 years after FF10. If you want to compare to games of a similar budget, it also looks way worse than .hack.

That's not how I felt at the time. As
puts it, there's a "doll face" quality to them and the anatomy feels "off". It struck me as the devs still figuring out how to model characters in 3-D, making them look appealing, working for gameplay purposes, and abiding by the engine's limitations. With all of those constraints in mind, I think they did the best they could do, but the overall result is not good. The one decent thing that can be salvaged from SO3 would be the gameplay and I was lukewarm towards that. This is coming from an SO fan so if anything my bias should have been in its favor.
I think they should have had the models have less detail and be more cartoonish. Have them look more like something out of Dark Cloud maybe? Then again, given what they were going for artwise, that probably wasn't an option. I'd love to have a behind-the-scenes look to see what caused them the most grief, but my bet would be Enix still trying to figure out...or should I say squareenix? You can maybe blame the (relatively) recent merger between those companies perhaps. My tinfoil thought was square sabotaged it so that game wouldn't outshine their IPs but that's a stupid theory considering they were the ones publishing the thing. That's a lot of money to lose to rub Enix's face in the dirt.

Dias is canonically a sword savant, whereas Claude is just some fed nepobaby who took some self defense classes and picked up a sword a couple weeks ago. It's an amazing accomplishment to get recognized by the best swordsman on the planet, especially when he happens to be a prideful asshole whose cute childhood friend you're so clearly crushing on. Claude is something of a savant, too, but he's literally 10 years too early to beat Dias in a sword fight, the gap in experience is too large.

lol, well you could "beat" him in the original at least, and considering how faithful this remake has been, I'm 99% sure it's still possible here, too.
Problem is, it required some serious jank of the already janky mechanics to pull off. As I'm typing this, I'm pretty sure this old method wouldn't work in the remake anymore, but basically one way was to grind so fucking much that you had a high crit rate and high guts, and essentially one shot Dias with a max damage crit SIMULTANEOUSLY as GUTS goes off as well; guts triggering would bypass his immunity, allowing you to crit and deal as much damage as your stats allow, and you would need like...8000ish to actually KO him.
To the orig devs' credit, there is actually unique dialogue if you pull this off. It's as simple as something like "wow good job claude lol, now let's go for real" or some shit, and the fight just restarts and will continue restarting until you lose. But it's pretty kino.
homosexual of dragoon had no such easter egg for its bullshit japanojank unwinnable tournament fight. Though to be fair, they also scripted that fight heavily, meaning they included unique code for it and there was no way to bypass it with jank or exploits or cheats. Still gay though.
you can't beat dias in the original. after you get him down to no health he just says that he was just warming up. it's part of the story. it's scripted for you to lose in all versions.

Also, I should add in case some other idiot chimes in with a waste of a (You) with dumb, snarky dumbness: Dias constantly refills his HP every second, so when I said you had to do 8k-ish of damage, I meant basically you had to do enough to one-hit him, since he will regen immediately and IIRC, has about 8,000 HP.

Wrong. You could never defeat Shin/Cynne in the original, save for the third and final encounter. In the first match, he is completely invincible (a la Dias) and you cannot win—the goal is to survive 60 seconds. In the second fight, you have to lose to progress (a la Dias). Third fight, he is meant to be beaten to progress the story and is typically not a difficult fight at this point.
I am 33 and an alpha male and I still remember renting this game from blockbuster for the first time and falling in love with it in like 2000ish. Don't even try this approach with me, kid. They didn't really change who you can or can't beat in the remake. Don't get so worked up over it though. Anyway it would require so much grinding in the PS1 version it's definitely not worth it, barely anything changes outside his dialogue and your chars aren't lying down when he pushes you into the water, that's literally it. I like Evasion Gain to have a quick way to fill the gauge if I flub a blindside or guard something I shouldn't have, but I ignored it on my 2nd playthrough for Guardian and Strike Gain instead and it still mostly worked out.

In 1, 3, and 5 you're the lesser civilzation breaking out into the world beyond.
4 you're an advanced civilzation, but you only stumble upon one lesser civilzation which only lasts like 2 hours, the rest are just as advanced if not moreso than the earth federation at that time.
if you truly want a complete from a completion standpoint team you want to:
pick Rena
reset until she gets Nimble Fingers
then play until Celine, check if she has Lover of Animals
if so save and continue, if not reset the whole game and try again because those are generated on new game
Resetting for traits is pointless, if anything the less traits you get the better since it's very easy to learn the talents or traits or whatever they were called and you get 100 sp per one you learn, which is a huge amount early on

The stars don't stunlock enemies anymore, so Holy Sword Farewell and Demon Sword Levantine are better. There's also a new sword for Claude that's even better called the Planeteer, but you have to go through a boss rush with one character, with the last fight being against Gabriella Celeste.

I get who i want, then just shrink the party if i feel like, backlines are great in this game beyond just putting stuff like faerie bracelet to collect items or leveling other specialties they also provide use via assault formations

Welp 2nd playthrough finished, 1 shot with no bloody armor/indomitable trick all the super bosses and double angel arena battle. Dias+Precis is one hell of a drug jesus fuck they were so much more ridiculous than my first playthrough, precis is almost (but not quite) bloody armor tier busted.

Multi hitting skills were king and Precis was just not not good at that. She is probably the hardest character to solo Iselia with on Universe not counting the mages.
Dear god yes, I just in one attempt, no retires did the twin angels arena fight on arena with no invincibility gimmicks on universe with precis on ai and she probably by far did the most damage with barrier spam hitting for around 70k x3 if all 3 hits connected. Like this character is busted beyond belief with her new ultimate weapon, but even before that she's still ridiculously strong, just runs through mp like nobody else.
How do I get some good factors on my gear? I tried it a couple times and got crap factors
Pray to RNG. Use something with Masterwork as material.

You can use equipment with High Grade and Masterwork factors as fodder to increase the chance of factors
You can eat food to increase the chance of rare factors (but it only gives you two shots)
It's just that's kind of tedious menuing to do compared to rolling the dice with Factor Energy, which still isn't great to do one at a time. And yes, different factors are categorized separately, there's a steam guide I think.

I got this factor on it, ring of might for double atk, bloody armor to sap my hp down, let somebody die for enrage and had Celine and Leon buff me with assault actions. Then one of my phase gun hits crit for max. They were doing 60-70k non crit.
Just use one of the big single hit skills, almost everyone can do it pretty easily.
Dias with his guaranteed crit weapon even has his normal attacks hit for 99,999 with Ring of Might and Winged Bracelet.

It depends on your teams damage output. My first playthroughs team was frankly ass at actual damage (pretty alright for breaking atleast) but needed like 650 to consistently survive due to just taking more hits.
Meanwhile my second playthrough shit damage with like 2 minute super boss kills and I got away with my highest character being at 450 and my claude+dias not even at 300.

I'm not sure how the remake handles things, but I distinctly remember two things from the original PS1 game.
First, don't exclusively level up a bunch of mages. I did that, and it was a huge mistake. You'll hit a point in the game where you get put into a new area (with no way back) and much stronger enemies, where you can't just nuke them into oblivion. I got stuck with no way to make gold, inns costing more than I could earn in fights before 0MP, and no melee characters capable of having a meaningful impact on the game. I doubt that other people would do this, but it was kind of a disappointing point to restart the game from.
Second, the PS1 version of Opera had an absurdly fast normal attack on anything above her head. (as in, knocked into the air, not just higher up on the screen) If you can knock something into the air, or even better, have it land on her head, she can go nuts and stunlock attack-spam whatever it is until dead. Not sure if that's still in SO2R, but it was fun to do.
normal attack aren't as relevant anymore, since you can break the 9999 damage limit, and mages are better if you invest into them. still wouldn't recommend going full mage tough, their AI can be quite wonky and the game really favors first blood and special arts spam
Mages feel more designed for using them as an assist and using the frankly ridiculous break properties on some spells (that aren't even break focused) even knowing they can't break the damage cap this way. In my last save file a leon assist extinction could do like a shield and a half to the angels.

Aint the worst idea, honestly i just put buffs/aoe heals on assault action since the AI sucks at doing both support and healing, and you only usually need the 1 heal aoe for most of the game
iirc only if you choose conserve MP, honestly rena seems to have the worst AI out of the playable characters.

Base ps1 version there's a global limit on +attacks of iirc 3 (it might be 2 but brain is telling me 3) so you couldn't stack two lightspeed rings in original version. I don't know if this remake removed that global limit (especially seeing how many weapons have +1 attack now I'd be surprised if they didn't)

There's no reason to not recruit Leon or Dias on their respective routes.

Dias is one of the strongest characters in the game and Leon is a solid choice. Who are you putting in their place? Noel? Get real.
Outside of Opera+Ernest and Precis+Welch there's no real duo PAs with your picks.
If you want PAs I'd do start as Rena and grab Celine, Ashton, Precis, Welch, Dias, and Chisato.
I already started with Claude and might not start a 2nd playthrough until next year probably. I might just get bowman so I can have Precis/Ashton next time I guess. Kinda wish they'd just let us have all the party members in this version.
i grabbed leon and chisato on the same setup, it feels like there is no reason not to pick the exclusive character.

They really should have added a "buff party" options to the AI casters.
Just put celine's angel feather on your assault actions.
There's not really many buffs worth using, comes down to angel feather and reflection really

May just be playing him wrong but best mileage is meteor palm, life sword, and phase gun. Helm splitters alright for quick shield damage and early game damage/field movement but otherwise crap, and everything else seems to have either too much of a wind up or enemies just walk out of like mirror sword
All you need is sword of life in early game and phase gun in endgame. That's it.
How do you get phase gun back?
Get it back around the time you make it to the 2nd planet
The central city mayor gives one to you as a gift. I think it's part of the plot so it's impossible to miss but if it's not the game tells you about aub events anyway
