Harvest moon was painfully slow and clunky compared to stardew. Only snes is somewhat comparable.

Stardew valley only exists because the dev was a big harvest moon gay and was disappointed in the garbage modern harvest moon/story of season games.

Well it was the first of its kind natively available on PC, which is the 2nd biggest platform out there after mobile, so it makes sense.

No, SV definitely dragged the farm sim genre out of niche status and this is the outcome. HM was pretty much ignored by everyone but its fans.

        Anonymous

Also Stardew was and still is only 15 bucks or less. Pretty good deal compared to the 40/60 dollar price tag for Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons.

        Anonymous

Harvest moon always has been, and will forever be niche. Story of Seasons has all the old devs and Stardew Valley shattered the popularity of both of them at least tenfold. Or are you actually saying Harvest Moon was the first video game that let you farm?

No. Everyone who read a gaming magazine at the time (i.e. everyone) knew about it and those interested and who could afford it tried it out and let their friends know it was good. It is not an unknown niche game.

There's a hole in the market that was created by animal crossing. There are very few games to appeal to the animal crossing demographic and everyone is trying to rush to be the guy to do it and make a million bucks.

what all those guys somehow don't understand, is that women value the aesthetics much more.
That's why stardew valley is so big, it's cute pixel graphics with nice lighting and atmosphere.

Isn't Story of Seasons suppose to be the Harvest Moon canon despite not using the Harvest Moon name?

      Anonymous

Yes, the original Harvest Moon titles up to around the DS era were localizations of the japanese Bokujo Monogatari. Natsume USA lost the localization rights but got to keep the name, so now the Harvest Moon games are made in the west and unrelated to the original japanese ones, and Story of Seasons is the actual current localization by Xseed/Marvelous. Kind of a clusterfrick of a story.

Harvestella looks good. Story of seasons let's you have a job, a family, get married, have kids, and get old so it might be fun since those things are impossible to achieve in real life nowadays.

I am a pretty big RF4 fan but god damn. I would have preferred if they just fricking didn't botch RF5. I guess rather than make that game good, they would prefer to port 3 and then just start a whole other sequel at the same time? Lol. Xseed's gonna be busy.

Disneydew Valley is actually pretty good since it does away with most off the time wasting crap that's in Stardew, it's just all dopamine hits, and it has the most time generous battle pass in history, as I was able to get every item I wanted in 2 game sessions.

farm games have a way of being massively hit or miss in quality, so having 4 new ones around the same time is really staking the odds at least one of them will be any good.

Ok but seriously, is the Life Sim fandom really big enough to warrant devs putting out 6 fricking games in it next year on the same console? Won't they all cannibalize each-other?

      Anonymous

If they spread out releases then I don't see the problem? I'm always down for more games to play in genres I like. Switch is also one of the best consoles to play these games on. RF5 is the only one that had really bad performance from what I've played.

the industry is starved for new entrants at the moment
and they all look like something a little different
so they probably not only appeal to different niches
but anyone starved for farm sim games is going to end up trying them all (time permitting)

    >genre that thrives on a small budget
    >top down/isometric viewpoint to further make it easier to develop
    >most of the "gameplay" can be designed through spreadsheets
    >the rest of the game is just low budget art assets and a small handful of animations
    >the perfect combination of development shortcuts and handicaps for an underpowered system where nobody will expect high production value
that's really all there is to it. Not specific to stardew valley, there have been dozens of farming/life sim games over the years and they have usually been for nintendo consoles for the reasons I stated above.

Rune factory 3 needs the gameplay update, so do 2 and 1. I am apprehensive of the words "new rune factory SERIES in development"
Harvestella looks fun but they haven't shown romance so it might be dead on arrival. Story of seasons can keep doing remakes if their new games are gonna suck like pioneers of olive town. Fae farm looks like a decent rune factory like but again, no romance= dead on arrival. if all 5 of these flop I'll go thanos and do it myself. Competing with stardew may be suicide but at least I'll have a game with my ideal scenario.

I'm the most interested in Harvestella.
It looks mainly like a JRPG with some farming sim elements, not the other way around. That's always my issue with something like RF, where I feel like it tries to do both but never quite satisfies either itch (hell farming in 4 is borderline automated/obsolete at some point)
