The backlash was because Starfield was overhyped as the “game of the decade”. Because it’s so overhyped, people want to see Bethesda and their fanboys get their comeuppance. It the game wasn’t so overhyped and shilled so hard, then there’re wouldn’t be such an equal and opposite reaction. It wasn’t absolute dogshit like Redfall or Forspoken, but the hype and shilling wasn’t proportional to the quality of the game.

In time, Starfield will be considered amazing, just as it's predecessors, Skyrim and Fallout 4 were seen as big steps back compared to the games in the series that proceeded them. To be fair, this criticism was much heavier towards Fallout 4 then Skyrim, but the criticism was still there, a few examples being the removing of many skills and how easy it was to get into the Mage Guild in Skyrim, by casting some stupid spell, than Oblivion, were you had to have a written recommendation from all Colleges.
With time, both Skyrim and FO4 had not only patches that fixed things and added content, but DLC's which all breathed life into the game. Dawn Guard, Far Harbor, Nuka-World, etc. This will happen with Starfield as well, and simultaneously the modding scene will grow and grow and grow.
Zoomers will respond to this, calling me retarded, swearing up and down Skyrim and FO4 were considered 10/10 GOTYAY's immediately upon release, all because IGN gave it a 10/10 or some stupid shit like that. But anyone that was actually alive and sentient during the times when both of these games were released will know that I am write. And everyone reading this, God-willing they stay alive that long, will see the public opinion turn for Starfield the same as it always does.
