It's honestly hilarious how most games make all status effect/instant death spells completely useless by doing this.
It used to be that bosses were only immune to certain effects, but now every single boss is completely immune.
Poison used to be great for bosses, now they're all immune.

Statuses are pretty garbage to begin with in that game though. Statuses were pretty garbage in ff7 too to the point you'd only make use of them with added effect.
It's dev laziness is all. If they can't be arsed to design every individual encounter with everything else in the game in mind, they just slap on some immunities or the encounter is too easy for them to even matter in the first place. So status effects end up being either worthless to spend time using, or useless because they don't even work.
Then you get shit like nocturne and shit where they can't be bothered to balance around buffs and debuffs so they just give the enemy a lol buff/debuff removal ability.
FFX was a game where debuffs and statuses kinda were more impactful, and obviously the yunalesca fight is one of the few to actually make some kind of proper use of status effects

Status effects on bosses work in a bunch of FFs, FF5 was great with it and so was FF7. I remember blinding Diabolos in FF8 so he couldn't kill me. Sadly, the games are so easy you never check if status effects work.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but somehow competitive Pokemon battles are really cool and I remember enjoying building my teams and trying to outpredict my opponents.
Haven't kept up with gens 7 an 8 so I don't know anything about the current meta or if it's still enjoyable.

I know FFX had a few bosses that could be cheesed with poison, like Seymour Flux doesn't change his patterns and pull out bigger and deadlier attacks if you kill him entirely via poison damage.
Also not bosses, but a Stonestrike weapon that you can craft very early into the game trivialized 90% of the game's random encounters. There were very few enemies outright immune to being petrified.

no boss is 100% stat immune, stat effect + attack skills combos give you the best damage multipliers in the game, many bosses are vulnerable to predation skills (which are OHKOs if the enemy is afflicted with certain stat effect combinations) and every "young" boss is actually WEAK to a myriad of effects

Labyrinth of Touhou 2 does a good job in my opinion.
Very few bosses are immune to all status effects and debuffs, status effects are very powerful, you have items that make every attack or spell of a character have a decent chance of applying a status effect, characters who specializes in a certain status effect and get some powerful bonuses if someone has said status effect, a character that lowers the status effect resistance of enemies, Hina who just fricks everyone with debuffs including herself just to become more powerful.
And if you aren't overleveled you need to use status effects and debuffs on normal encounters to be efficient while exploring.
There is one catch tho. Some status effects work differently on you than on enemies. Heavy, for example, prevents you from swapping party members which would be useless on enemies. So instead on enemies it lowers their speed and reduces their physical defense by 50%. You can also debuff their physical defense directly up to 50%. Those two stack.

Fricking Persona is the absolute worse culprit of this. Especially in 3 and 4 (non-golden version) where almost no bosses have weaknesses either so the entire fight is literally just nuking the boss as much as possible and occasionally buffing and healing yourselves.

The only debuffs from memory that work in any of them is the lowered defense/attack/evasion spells. No status effects do shit against bosses though.

I realized I grew up when I realized most of my problems in today's manga/anime is that it's not just marketed to boys, even when it's shonen, it's also marketed to actual, breathing women, and it's why first girl, worst girl always wins.

      Anonymous

Expand on this what are you talking about?

        Anonymous

there's about twenty actual women on earth who can self insert as someone else genuinely

the rest of them, not even just western women, eastern women too, just love not self-inserting as anyone but the boring female protagonist that was advertised with the MC on vol. 1.
women unironically do not like stories where the MC picks the best women for his nest, they love stories where the MC could be stars and above better than them, but will still princess them. Not that I wouldn't love a mommy GF that'd scoop me up and sugar me for the rest of my life, you would too, but here's the difference:
That isn't any of ours single only fantasy.
That's literally one of two fantasies women have, the other one unironically being fricking raped.
So, boring girl has to win, or the female audience can't self insert because they're all fricking boring.

The only thing to look forward to is that "best girl winning" is unironically becoming a sub-category that can only get more money into it, right?9

You're absolutely right, they doesn't make sense in games where ressources (HP/MP in most cases) are easily available due to cheap and plentiful restorative items, but for dungeon crawlers, where you engage into one risky trip to a dungeon they're useful.

I feel that's why mediocre RPG are mediocre. Crowd control, target priorities, money management not being really a thing outside of equipements are what make you involved in the mechanics.

Modern FFXI has solved the boss status dilemma almost entirely. Most bosses have a level of resistence higher than ordinary enemies but you can keep spamming the same shit to weaken resistence until the poz finally lands and it's potent as frick. Big attacks get cancelled with paralysis, outgoing damage greatly reduced with accuracy and slow effects. The mitigated damage allows you to swap out the second healer for whatever you want especially if you're using a red mage who has weaker heals anyway to supplement. The fact single player games don't use this dynamic is a fricking travesty.

        >SSJ3 pushses it too far and is autistic
That's kind of the point. Everyone noted that it was ridiculous and not sustainable.

What are some games with good random encounters, so that you can't just hit them to death.

More bosses and enemies in games should take inspiration from Smite's Jormungandr.
He can't be hard displaced(Push, Knock Up, Pull, Grab) but he gets an uncleansible status effect called daze which slows him down and makes him take more damage.
So a boss can't be instantly killed but instead would take a burst of damage. Or in DoT cases it could be reduced, have a cap or something.

    >play BoF III
    >notice 2 def buffs give you basically 30% damage reduction
    >waste 2 spells buffing entire party up
    >make up for it by wasting less MP and turns healing later

    >speed buffs/debuffs are downright broken (EX turns, even against superbosses. especially useful for getting the most out of dragon form)
    >sleep lets you heal up and/or blast enemies with magic for free + entire party gets EX turns if all enemies are asleep, which is ideal for stealing
    >even if important debuffs don't work against most bosses, you can still buff yourself
I can't believe you were missing out on all this OP.
