Steam controllers

I'm an oldgay boomer, and I just can't do it bros. I can't get into keyboard and mouse for FPS games. I just can't. I prefer a controller, always have. So now I am building a new computer, and can finally run everything I have on Steam in 4k, so I want a good controller. What is it? Is it pic related, which is $200? Frick me.

the elite controller is absolute trash, they have horrible QC issues and fail in a couple months
there's no really good controller at the moment sadly. your best bet is chink stuff but they all have their own downsides. or dualsense and deal with the horrible battery life and inevitable joystick drift.

Unironically best bet nowadays is DS4, touchpad is good for extra binds. Just don't squeeze too hard or the cheap plastic will literally crack in your hands.

I get more immersed when i self insert into a FPS and use a controller. Because the clunkiness of the aiming is how id probably aim myself. I wouldnt be pulling of constant headshots in real life.

It's the best controller on the market as far as ergonomics and paddles go, but the durability is not up to snuff for a $200 controller. The left/right bumpers shouldn't start to fail within a year but they do.

On top of the fact that the Xbox Elite S2 came out long before every whiner started b***hing about MAH DRIFT (mostly because of joycons that had an issue) hall effect isn't some fricking panacea - shitty chinesium hall effect sensors may not be any more accurate or have other issues; it still needs to be built right. There are plenty of people with non-hall effect sticks that don't drift or have any other problems, just like there are QA issues with even cheap hall effect shit from taobao.

The PS4's DualShock 4 has all the features you'd want, though a generic controller might also have gyro+analogue triggers. The main issue with generic controllers is that, if wireless, they WILL have battery issues. As in, the controllers will die within a few months. The Xbox controller has no features to warrant that over a generic one.

Its a great controller, probably the best Xbox controller to date. I've had mine since release and haven't had any major issues (only in the past year has my right bumper been a little less accurate, but I fixed that myself. Also one of my stick tops rubber cut through, but) However they really should come out with a sequel. Overall though if you want an Xbox controller its easily the best option , has a difference in build quality (much more metal) in addition to the new features like the swappable stick tops and the back paddles. There are also aftermarket and 3rd part configs for them if you want. Also they now apparently have a cheapo version that is just the base controller without the case and all the extra parts, the paddles etc... which can be purchased a la carte so that's a thing but I think it best to get the whole thing especially when it goes on sale. Note that it has some limitations like no gyro as is the case with all Xbox controllers, but has some benefits in that its by default XInput doesn't require any special drivers or anything. However, since you're using Steam it can basically "be" the drivers for all major controllers, but if you play titles not launched through steam (note you can use 3rd party titles launched through steam and it works fine) you will need other driver packages for non-Xbox controllers.

As far as alternatives, the Nintendo Switch Pro (good, but no analog triggers. Great for emulation of Nintendo systems andother retro stuff) and the DualSense are probably your best options. Hell, pic related is the DualSense EDGE which is the equivalent to the Xbox Elite S2 - it has extra buttons, paddles and stuff that Steam can bind. Note that you'll want to use it with Steam or as mentioned above you'll need a driver package like DS4Windows ( stick to open source ones).

There are also 3rd parties but they vary, some of the better ones supposedly are the 8bitdo Ultimate and Gulikit KK3 Max

      >DualSense EDGE

Actually I think I'd like that better than the Xbox one. I always liked my PS2/PS3 controller and played the shit out of FPS with those.

Never fricking buy scuf unless you want to burn some money paying restocking fees

Thoughts on the Gulikit KKK3? I'm going to emulate a keyboard with it (steam input) because you get super precise gyro controls on Halo Infinite

You don't get true gyro unless you use it on bluetooth mode which currently has really shitty polling rate

        Anonymous

        >no real gyro except bluetooth
Interesting. Is this only for KK3 Max or for others too be they 3rd (ie 8bitdo Ultimate / Ultimate w/ Hall) or 1st party?

        >DualSense EDGE

Actually I think I'd like that better than the Xbox one. I always liked my PS2/PS3 controller and played the shit out of FPS with those.

Its a tradeoff vs Xbox Elite S2. If you like
        >Playstation style symmetrical stick layouts
        >Gyro and other DualSense features
        >Ability to swap the actual stick mechanisms not just the stick tops
its a good solution. However there are some tradeoffs
        >Battery is worse than the original DualSense given that in order to make the stick mechanisms user-removable, they needed more room so a smaller battery. This is not a big issue though for 90% of users I figure, as you can also just charge the damn thing with ease when you're done playing
        >Edge gives you 4 paddles in the case (2 long style like in my picture kinda like the Xbox Elite S2 ones but installed/unseen in my pic are 2 half-moon style), but you can only attach 2 of them at time. Why they didn't give you 4 attachment points seems like Sony autism left over from the back button DS4 addon .
        >Those textured player-facing buttons on the back of the pad right behind the sticks that are vertical press down types? On an actual PS5 they can be only used for binding different options to the paddles and settings and shit, not usable for any unique functions BUT ON PC, NOTABLY STEAM (also other driver packages) they can just be another couple of buttons you can use so that's a chance of it being better on Steam/PC.
        >of course, if not using Steam you need to use a custom driver package like any DualSense.

Overall I think its worth it if you can stomach the price and like Playstation style "pro/elite" controllers. Its newer than the Xbox Elite S2 and thus will not be on sale as much as quickly. Oh by the way, supposedly there will be an Elite S3 but no idea when its coming.

Bluetooth works fine on PC, just buy like a 10 dollar usb bluetooth adapter
Dualsense is a great controller thoughever, mine unfortunately started drifting after about 3-4 years of moderate use. Got my moneys worth for sure. Currently using series X controller and it's aright but still prefered the dualsense

Oh yeah its good to mention here that some features on controllers, both Xbox Series X/S or Elite S2 and DualSense or DualSense Edge , have different features when they're connected via USB vs wirelessly (and depending on which wireless form you use on Xbox, the bluetooth or the dongle receiver type). Some of this also depends on what drivers you're using too.

8bitdo ultimate bluetooth only has gyro when in switch mode, which doesn't have analog triggers. basically it either emulates an xbox controller or a switch controller, it never shows all of its features. so no back button mapping in steaminput either, only replicating a front button.
If Valve makes a new Steam Controller that is just a Deck without a screen (and hall effect sticks if possible) that would be the perfect PC controller.

In the middle, under the dpad and stick, if you want to keep an xbox layout. or straight up just do a steam deck with the screen cut off, with the dpad and stick aligned and touchpad below.

Apparently it has QC issues which I haven't experienced for myself. But what I can say is that it's the most feature complete controller and the most compatible with windows. If you need things like 4 back buttons/trigger stops/and keyboard binding support then the elite series 2 is the most reliable one - you can try your luck with 3rd party chink controllers that also have these like the gulikit kk3 or flydigi vader 3 pro, but in my experience there's always some caveat or quality issue that keeps me from using it as my main. The only big drawback is that the sticks are not hall effect so you will eventually run into stick drift as time goes on, whether it's sooner or later depends on your luck.
The controller also kind of breaks apart easily, not in the sense that a button stops working but things like the rubber knob for the trigger stops break loose and you're left with just the plastic spike underneath, the back buttons becoming wobbly and harder to press as you use them (had to get third party scuf paddles to remedy this), and the rubber grip is starting to peel off. None of these are deal breakers or require me to buy a completely new controller but it feels like poor quality considering the price.

KK3 Max is shit chink cheapo and paddles will die in a month.
    8BitDo Ultimate has shit ergonomics.
Elite Series 2 has shit face buttons but otherwise is fine but get a warranty.
Edge is the best if you can stomach the shitty battery life.
Apex 4 and Vader 3 Pro are great but back buttons are hard to reach.
Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra and SCUF horrible QC worse than Elite S2.
There's no one best pro controller that just werks perfectly. You have to settle. IMHO get the Edge or Elite S2. If battery or shit face buttons bother you, try the Apex 4 or Vader 3 Pro.

Does your computer have blutooth syncing? The controller I bought came without anything else, I just hit the playstation button on it then opened connections on my comp and they linked up. It also doesn't come with a charger fyi, but my android charger matches it

No. People who do this are usually 2 feet away from the case (where the dongle is plugged in) if you want true Bluetooth you need a proper god fearing wifi + Bluetooth pci express adapter with an antenna, that way you can be far away as frick and still get a good signal. I use my tplink archer and works flawlessly, even in Linux

I got mine because I worked in hazmat removal for walmart. Usually we take the broken bleach bottles and the detergents but they also started giving us Electronic waste which was mostly dead Bluetooth speakers and toys. Found two of those controllers in the bin one day, also found a pink switch lite in another bin.
They're pretty good for being free for me.

Coming from mouse and keyboard since 2005 all the way to 2023, I also changed to controller because it just feels easy and games are more comfy/enjoyable. I also do pretty fine and am easily still top leaderboard on bf2042.
The elite controller from playstation 5 does me really good, highly recommend and you can change the sticks if they drift.

I know. I've been playing them since Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Keyboard only bak then.

It's just since we've had analog controllers, I've prefered those. I just hate the WASD keys to move and the mouse to look. It's just cumbersome. No analog movement, and constantly having to reset the center of the mouse, and not having comfortable ergonomic buttons all within easy reach.

I only like keyboard and mouse for games like Civilization.

can someone explain to me why the dpad looks like this? it looks like the dumbest shit I've ever seen in my life.

just to be different i guess? under there it still works like a normal dpad, but the surface is concave so it keeps your thumb in the middle. it looks moronic but it feels nice.

I should mention that the faceted Dpad on the Elite is just one option. If you want a traditional cross, it comes with one of those too (both of them in metal). The faceted dpad is basically designed to be a hybrid of older styles (like Sega Saturn etc) that enabled easier diagonals. This is one reason it was integrated as the Series X pad as the only solution, because except those who very vehemently wanted a 4-way cross pad retro Nintendo style, its generally more comfortable for more forms of play, not inhibiting the cardinals but making diagonals (and things like 360 movements) easier. Of course again on th Elite you have the option to swap between both which is neat, as well as 3rd party opttions. Frankly one one thing I wish the DualSense Edge had enabled as well, swappable D-pad.
