Anon, Steam Deck isn't for poor moron NPCs. Of course it sells less because most people are of the slave class and tats the area Nintendo caters to. Genetic rejects like yourself wouldn't understand. You focus on numbers instead of a high quality of life. This is why people like me exploit slaves like you lol

the problem is anyone with money is either buying a normal gaymin laptop or a much more powerful windows handheld because dealing with linux's bullshit is for poor poojets with endless free time in their hands

I love this argument that Linux has to be messed around with to get things working. I have purchased games that are no Steam Deck verified that also claim have zero Linux support and I run them flawlessly on my Steam Deck with no changes necessary. I've had maybe two games I've had to fiddle around with to get working. One of them was Diablo 2 Ressurected and the only fiddling that needed to be done was installing Battlenet in desktop mode and adding a shortcut through Steam. One other game from the 90s I had to change a Proton version. 99% of things simply work on the Steam Deck if they're released on Steam. Everything else can be reasonably installed through Desktop mode. I'd argue people would probably end up with more issues on a Windows handheld versus a Steam Deck just on sheer support alone. Valve has Steam OS very open and polished.

Yeah you need to make a simple free account to access the store like literally every other platform on earth. You can also just go to desktop mode and use any other platform if you want.
And if anything having a predefined steam base should be a massive boon. There are 3 trillion active users or whatever number Gaben pulls out of his ass that already have steam accounts with games to play on a deck and they still don't give a shit about it

          >works great
          >have a second milling machine whose job is also to create holes in things

          >not everything needs to have rows of holes in it, only very few things do
          >the 2nd machine still performs better in the metrics of putting holes into things but is functionally worse because it fits the job at hand less often

The they're a different market cope depends entirely on the context being argued. If it's in terms of the device itself, it's tendies blubbering that they don't compete, but when it's in terms of sales, they turn it right back around and gloat. If there's anything the switch 2 can hold over the deck, you can bet your ass they'll all of a sudden be screaming that from the rooftops exactly as if they're direct competitors.

they are. i have both a switch and steamdeck and various other video game devices. the switch is orientated towards more casual/childish mario/pokemon demographics and the steamdeck is orientated towards 30+ year old "mature" gamers as a platform to play their "mature" pc games on.

the steam deck is more like a peripheral for pc gamers versus a whole console onto itself. its never going to replace pc gaming for pc gamers and its never going to have a chance/try to infringe on the mario/pokemon nostalgia gaming market - because thats not what it is.

the only thing they have in common is their ergnomic formfactor. outside of that they are two very different devices marketed for different uses/demographics.

            >sony and xbox has been putting their games on PC.
That's not a good argument for the continuation of PC gaming. The biggest problem with PC and console gaming (Sony and Microsoft) is that their games are objectively shit and paying for a top spec gaming rig in 2024 is a waste of money because the new games are shit. Nintendo has beloved exclusive titles that you can't get anywhere else so you can't really compare the two products as they're basically different markets. I own a PC and a PS5, last full price PC game I bought was Baldur's Gate 3 on the day it came out for early access on Steam (2020?) and last PS5 game I bought for full price was Elden Ring.

PC is a tool that, apart from its main purpose, can play computer games. In that, it's more similar to a smartphone (well, the other way around, but whatever) than a console, which is a dedicated device for playing games. So instead of contrasting Xbox and Snoy with Nintendo, you should be putting them into the same category and contrasting that to PC.

I'm not buying a top spec gaming PC to download torrents. There are no games coming out that warrant spending thousands of dollars on a top spec PC build for gaming, likely because PC AAA game creation is becoming prohibitively expensive so console ports are the only financially viable route for most developers.

you do realize there are several competent switch emulators, right? you can play Zelda on PC easily, and it'll run far better than on your switch (assuming you have a decent pc, ofc)

Yes, not owning a Switch and being something of a dork means I use them. Not everyone has a PC that can run them and not everyone is a dork that's willing to hunt them down and go through the hoops required to get them to work.

      >I refuse to play another nintendo game after how hard they massacred Pikmin with the fricking garbage dog game
mein fricking brother in allah. I thought I was the only PC gamer who liked Pikmin. I'm an old Starcraft/WC3 player, and I got into it during the Gamecube days - last Nintendo console I ever bought. I played Pikmin 4 on PC and the amount of handholding and gratuitous dialogue was maximum Nintendo. I don't understand why, after all these years, they can't design a game that isn't constantly holding your dick through every moment of the game.

Every 30 seconds, some oompa loompa looking mother fricker is talking to you, saying random useless shit, where to go, some "joke", or commenting about the area. Unskippable cutscenes, unskippable dialogue. Dumbed down and extremely simplified controls, which actually make it harder to organize and micro your Pikmin - I'm guessing the plan was to have players rely on the dog while deemphasized role of Pikmin; no need to micro when you can just press a button to win. It wasn't even that demanding in the first place.

When I was a child playing Pikmin 1 & 2, I never once thought, "man, this game is too complicated. If only Nintendo would somehow just make it easier". I guess that's what happens when you convert your entire user base to women and children.

What're you fricking stupid? The whole point of a Steam Deck is to have a portable way to play your Steam games that you already own. All Valve have to do is upgrade the Steam Deck every few years with QoL, better hardware and battery, and they'll be making bank each time.

        Anonymous

Steam deck exclusives is dumb, but "made for Steam deck" should be a thing. If a game comes out for Switch you know it'll run on the switch, but if a new PC game drops you have no guarantee it will run on the Deck at all, or if it does if it even runs acceptably. Sure, there's a steam deck compatibility tile on the steam store, but just like the Proton DB entries there's a gulf between "compatible" and "actually good experience" making it kind of useless in practice. WineHQ was the same problem, awarding Gold to shit that only just barely ran. Emulators have the same problem. Useless people racing to "test" things and mark them as "Playable" even though there's massive progression blocking issues.
Until the majority of developers start to treat the Deck as a necessary target for testing and optimisation, it will always be stuck in the "nice if it works, but don't count on it" kind of gadget for enthusiasts only.

          >made for Steam deck

Funny how the linux usage on the steam survey actually went down with the release of the goydeck.
It also kickstarted an arms race for powerful yet battery-lasting windows handhelds.
The goydeck literally did less than nothing towards this goal, it was actively detrimental for it.

The problem with Valve wanting another company to make the hardware is that this other company can never hit the price point that Valve can.
Anyone else needs to make a sizable profit on the hardware itself because they don't have revenue from Steam subsidizing the hardware. Even chinkshit handheld PCs which likely have smaller margins than say Asus with the Ally are priced sky high compared to the Deck
There's no way the Deck would have sold as much as it has if the initial MSRP was as high as something like the AMD-based Ayaneos or GPD Win 4

          Anonymous

That's the problem. Valve knows that and they know in order to push it they have to put a ton of effort into the hardware and software and still sell it all at a loss. It's likely why they currently only sell it through Steam and in only a few countries with practically no marketing. They're in the best position to be the leader of handheld PCs taking over, but they still don't want to have to shoulder the hardware for it. Maybe that'll change with the Deck 2 as they get more and more experience, but who knows. They may just continue to be happy pushing Linux and making that available to everyone else without the hassle of going all in on hardware distribution.

The Deck is a weird thing because it's a purely luxury product.
For other consoles, if you want to play their games, you need to actually buy the console.
But if you want to play something that's on the deck you can just... play it on your normal computer. Why would I pay an extra <whatever amount the deck costs> to play the exact same games?

I wanted to play retro games on my couch or in bed using an OLED device. So, I (moronicly) bought a Switch thinking I could mod it. Guides online said all I needed was a little plastic tab from Amazon. Learned the hard way that Nintendo patched this exploit out, and the only way to mod was to send the Switch to a guy in California for $250 to install a mod chip.Took it back and got a Steam Deck, the OLED came out the week that I bought the Switch. Just bad luck.
I don't buy a lot of consoomer electronics, but the Deck is one of my favorite electronic devices that's come out over the last decade. I have Ocarina of Time (ship of harkinian) running at 60 fps with HD textures - game looks incredible on OLED. Nothing Nintendo has ever done or will ever do can produce that experience. So much customization for refresh rates and fps cap, and the ability to rebind anything to anything. Click a button and you're in an Arch Linux desktop. Very easy to use, full control. Just an awesome little device. The total opposite design philosophy of Nintendo's communist walled garden authoritarian control.

Enthusiasts who build their own PCs are a tiny segment of the market.
Deck has sold as many units as the 4080, and it has passed the 4090 at least once.

Because the Steam survey is a survey the numbers fluctuate a bit.
There are also oddities like the Deck being split in two. Which might be OLED vs LCD, but that isn't clear.

I never take the steam survey, but if I did it would be on my PC, not my Deck. Does it automatically collect whether I played on a Deck? I feel like the only thing steam hardware survey is useful for is for the proportion of the market that uses certain hardware, and the people actively participating are probably choosing their higher end PCs over the handheld.

        Anonymous

You can't choose which device you take the hardware survey on if you get selected
It's just randomly sent and if it shows up for your Deck but you choose not to participate, it doesn't get transferred to your PC if you login to Steam there afterwards

Steam Deck was worth it for Valve for the fact that it worked as a trojan horse to prove that linux gaming is actually viable now.

Shitting on the Deck’s UX is actually reasonable though

    >install game to MicroSD to save space
    >creates 1GB of Proton data because Proton is duplicated per game, on the internal drive
    >creates 4GB of shader cache data, on the internal drive
    >game crashes because there’s no more internal space for the next batch of shader cache data
    >go to clean up shader cache data from games I’m not playing
    >only way to do it is reboot into KDE plasma desktop, google the hidden file path, scrub thru folders with names like “1466789” and “2011891” and google those numbers to see which game they correspond to
    >delete those folders
    >empty the recycle bin
    >reboot steam
    >play game again

I have had to do this half a dozen times and it sucks. No consolegay wants to deal witg this. I love my Deck but it is incapable of competing with the true idiot-proof console experience

Part of the convenience of steam is not having a ton of games taking up space, but if you've got a huge amount of games from elsewhere then at that point just splurge on a 2tb m.2
Normalgays aren't going to need more than 512gb. I have nearly 100 games installed, some of them pretty big like nioh, a smattering of games from myabandonware and hundreds of roms (though admittedly older games with small sizes) and I haven't needed to go beyond 512gb yet.

Ah yes, disassembling my handheld to solder in a hard drive I ordered off Newegg, the true consolegay experience right there

Also uninstalling games doesn’t clean up compatdata and shader cache, FYI. Still requires manual erasure.

Yes it does otherwise I'd have run out of space ages ago with the number of games I've installed and uninstalled over the years and you'd be hearing a lot more people complaining about it if that were an actual issue.

They do, you’re wrong, but compatdata only accumulates if you update Proton and shadercache builds a lot for certain kinds of games and not others. You can do a full playthrough of 300 Baba-Is-You-likes for the same internal drive space as one Sekiro

I have sekiro, elden ring, mhw, street fighter 4, nioh, and 80 other games currently installed right now on a 512gb. I have never felt short on space without reason.

I have around 300 installed on mine, not including emulation. Plenty of larger titles around 20-80GB. I never feel like space is a problem on it.

Installed, or played? Remember, Shadercache and fills up as games are played. Just installing 50 games is easy, but then you’ll add 1-2GB per game (permanently) as you play them. Uninstall them and install a few more, and the old ones leave their proton installs and shadercaches behind. None of this can be migrated off of the internal drive without manually configuring symlinks and none of it can be deleted without googling AppIDs and dicking around in Steam’s folder structure

                Anonymous

Yeah on a 512GB, that’s fine. Play that game on a 64GB and see where it gets you. And then remember that the situation people like me are in now is the same situation people like you WILL be in eventually, because the inability to manage shadercache and compatdata is a HUGE FRICKING DESIGN FLAW, and Valve isn’t addressing it.

And my point is, the reason that shit is tolerated is because Deck users are PC nerds who tinker with shit to fix it. Which is fine, as far as it goes, but if you want the console audience? It’s nowhere near good enough.

Bro you were supposed to replace that. You can't even install nioh alone on that. This is why I think they shouldn't have even included the 64gb in it at all so it could've been $10 cheaper and people knew for a fact that it was meant for you to swap in your own storage.

You were never meant to install games on the internal drive unless they needed the read speed, you were meant to install them to MicroSD, it’s why Valve deliberately rewrote the Steam library UI to support hotswapping and recommended it as the optimal way to use a Deck.

The only reason they phased out the 64GB was because it became apparent that the compatdata/shadercache problem was a huge QoL issue for those users and they were too lazy or inept to fix it. But it’s still a problem that will (eventually) get ALL Deck owners, you just have more grace space to get away with your Other category slowly bloating and eating up more and more and more HDD space.

You sound like a Windows user “oh who cares that the OS needs 7GB of RAM just to idle on the desktop lmao poorgay I have 32GB on this machine”

                >You were never meant to install games on the internal drive
Except that's why they gave you 256, 512, and now 1tb options. You chose the one with the least amount of storage, something many games would've even be able to download or install to. SD cards are also slower.
                >The only reason they phased out the 64GB
They phased it out because it was a pitiful amount of storage period.
                >your Other category
I've never cleaned that out either and the number of folders in it is the number of games I have installed and it's also not over 15gb.
                >You sound like a Windows user “oh who cares that the OS needs 7GB of RAM just to idle on the desktop lmao poorgay I have 32GB on this machine”
You keep saying HDD too and thought you had to solder, so I'm inclined to believe you just don't know what you're talking about when you simply chose the lowest amount of space and it did what anyone could've told you it would do.

MicroSDs you fricking idiot, as I already said. You can buy a 64GB deck and a 512GB microSDXC for less than the cost of a 512GB Deck (or you could at launch, at any rate). And it works extremely well, PROVIDED you’re prepared to manage your shadercache and compatdata by hand because Steam BPM on Deck just won’t let you manage those files

This is why the compatdata/shadercache management workflow will never be fixed, by the way. morons will see 20GB of useless data on their drive that they can’t delete and solve that problem by installing a bigger drive. As long as you gobble it up as-is, there’s no reason to make it work properly, and people like me will just use CryoUtilities to manage it by hand, so it will never work in a way the average user will accept.

And that’s why the Deck as-is will never actually compete in the console space. Because neither of those solutions (upgrade your hardware or tinker around in the file system manually/with third party tools) are amenable to the sort of user who plays on console instead of PC

It expands the way a very tiny portion of the PC gaming userbase thinks about PC gaming. It is Valve’s third failed attempt to become a Big Console Player.

I do not have the problem you do and I know for a fact I've been downloading way bigger games with appropriately way bigger shader caches and comp data than you have and I still do not have that problem.
                >And that’s why the Deck as-is will never actually compete in the console space
It isn't competing in the console space because valve isn't even trying to do that. If that's what they wanted they'd be advertising it everywhere, getting it into way more countries, and lining the shelves of retailers. People will always have problems with their devices when they're selling to millions of people. My switch drifted very early on, that shit didn't stop it from selling.

If you uninstall, sometimes (it seems to be tied to whether or not the game is using proton because the data is cached in there IIRC and proton installs don’t go away when games uninstall).

If you hotswap sim cards, absolutely not. The Deck is designed to be used with hotswapped sim cards but keeping your entire library installed on cards and swapping them out will never work because your internal drive will bloat up with secondary “other” data you can’t manage properly from within the Steam client.

Only Ganker would be dumb enough to actually defend this as good design. Only Ganker would be dumb enough to not go “yeah it sucks, wish they’d fix it. Still love the Deck though” and instead try to explain why the OS bloating the internal hard drive with mystery data it doesn’t allow you to control is actually a good thing.

Do you guys have custom settings or do you just use the defaults (refresh rate, TDP, etc)?

      Anonymous

You always want to tweak in game settings. If you have the OLED you don't really ever have to touch TDP. If you have the LCD, you do want to dial it in to as low as it can go without the frametime being impacted.

        Anonymous

I have the OLED. Just wondering if there's any settings I should change to get more out of it.

          >If you have the OLED you don't really ever have to touch TDP
          Can you explain why?

          Anonymous

Not TDP. Just lower the most obviously costly settings like lighting. Because the screen is so small I also usually turn off any kind of heavy duty AA like MSAA. If it's something lightweight like TAA I leave it.

          Also
          >If you have the OLED you don't really ever have to touch TDP
          Can you explain why?

The LCD version doesn't really obey the TDP cap. It does, but it's willing to push way further beyond the cap momentarily if it has to so if you suddenly need more power it doesn't necessarily frick performance. On the OLED the cap is much more stringent so if you suddenly need more power it will immediately hurt performance. The OLED is good enough at regulating TDP to leave it uncapped.

there's something wrong with these kind of people, they think the world is a very simple place.

They put the switch and the steamdeck side by side, draw a comparison, a winner and a loser. Doesn't work like that. The truth is that Valve created a whole new market. A switch-like PC that "just werks" and with Linux!, sure there was the GPD but it wasn't powered by SteamOS nor did it have that form factor.

Check out every laptop manufacturer doing their own "steamdeck", Valve clearly did something right there.

The reason the switch sold like hotcakes wasn't because it was portable to begin with, it was the Nintendo first party exclusives and the fact its super fricking easy to set up, literally just out the box playable.

Meanwhile the Steamdecks or similiar 3rd party handhelds need some setup up, which scares normies and casuals away because they (understandably) want something that's hassle free and simple to use.

Wrong. Nintendo banks hard on portability and always has. Their consoles have never sold particularly well with the exception of the Wii. Fun fact the Gameboy outsold both the NES and SNES combined. If the Switch wasn't portable it would've sold way worse and would've likely been another Wii U scenario.

SteamOS 1.x and 2.x systems weren't that bad an idea really, they just ran into the reality that Microsoft won't let really their OEMs sell anything other than Windows boxes without paying them a bunch of money, unless its something where Microsoft would be picking a fight with another major player like Google.

The Deck is the SteamOS 3 device, and its done well enough that Valve commissioned a revised version of its custom SOC for a new revision of the hardware.
With SteamOS Valve isn't so much trying to exit the PC space to launch a console, but rather break the PC out of the restrictions Microsoft has placed on it to create space for the Xbox.
Also to free the PC from Microsoft because it is really looking like without Valve making a move Apple and Microsoft were both set to kill PC gaming as we know it.

Supposedly waiting on Microsoft getting tired of funding the patent troll by 'licensing' their crude drawing of a Xbox controller. Or for the court to get tired of the troll and sanction them.
Until that happens the troll will file endless motions and appeals for any controller Valve attempts to launch arguing that it is either infringing, or that Valve is somehow willfully dodging the patent to avoid paying which is somehow even worse in their view.

SoJ let them release the 32X. Sega Technical Institute was released terrible games. Yuji Naka refused to release a Sonic game on the Sega Saturn.

Sega could've been out first. They could have launched a Sonic game for the West. And they could saved their cash by working on one console.

Cool, but I don't think increasing wattage/voltage limits is going to help much unless both the CPU and GPU is being hammered extremely hard at the same time and even then I don't think that the cooling in the LCD decks can take the extra load well enough to make it worth while. If the OC controls can be used to under volt then that might be better to get a less noisy system with better battery life at no real performance cost

          >some games I'd rather be playing in bed on a handheld, like a shitty jrpg
This is fair enough but there are other solutions most of the time, i.e a monitor near your bed and an Xbox controller or for old console games a $50 handheld either of which is going to be more comfortable as well. In anycase I don't think anyone is commonly using a steam deck to play dark souls on the train

the train is actually a perfect place for it, particularly a sleeper car over a long distance. also hotels

the other element to it is that you can just get up and move somewhere else while continuing to play and no other setups really have that ability, but generally I'm just playing it in bed or on the couch while putting a podcast on my TV. in the summer I play it a lot on my patio.
