Yes, Valve needs to figure out something about the battery life. It's worse on WinDeck, maybe they should have tried to come to terms with Windows, and maybe they did.

However, it's the best we have. I was thinking of buying one to merely play indies on my couch and bed. The whole "runs AAA slop" meme backfired, also I guess the battery would take a lot of space, we'll see how they handle VR Deckard/Deck 2.
Also, my 144hz laptop lasts around the same drawing more power, guess because it's bigger.

Lmao I will never understand why people with the Steam Deck b***h about the battery life. And I don't even own the thing.

The reason the battery life can crater is because you're given the freedom to frick around with the settings all you want, meaning that you can easily frick up and burn through power. For example, "low-medium settings" means nothing without context (e.g., framerate caps if applicable, TDP, other app(s) running, etc).

The reason why the Switch battery is sometimes passable is that they've not given you any options, and simply crank down the quality like crazy to keep battery life nice. It's why there's such a drastic difference between docked and undocked.

You can analogize it to showers.

    Nintendo switch:
    >Tepid water, slow drip, but passable, you can totally at least kinda shower with it and talk about it on Ganker like it was the best shower of your life

    Steam Deck:
    >Lets you crank it so hot that you scald your skin, morons immediately run to Ganker to complain that Gaben's shower burned them

The battery on the deck is definitely on the shitty side but honestly bring a battery pack if you need 6 hours of playtime. A lot of times I need to lower the TDP as well in the options in order to squeeze an extra hour or so out of whatever game I’m playing. I’ve yet to run into any performance loss while doing that so it’s worth messing around with.

      Anonymous

Deck has a surprisingly small battery actually, only around 5300mAh. For reference, the Asus ROG 6 has a battery capacity of 6000mAh, weighs in at 240g with most of those weight being in the 2 glass panels.
So weight is not really a problem here, they could double and triple the capacity while not increasing the weight by that much at all.

I like how you skipped over the fact that Asus ROG 6 (as well as any other Android phone) starts throttling extremely hard after just 15-20 minutes of being under any kind of load, precisely because it's small, light, and has no room for actual heat dissipation and thermal management.

Batteries are a limiting factor that is impossible to get around in today's industry. This is why Nintendo underclocked the Nintendo Switch in the first place, even in docked mode, so Nintendo ensured that no developer would try to exceed a certain limit of resource usage.
Because of that, I also think that the Switch 2 that will probably be released late next year will be considerably less powerful than the Steam Deck. I don't see Nintendo releasing a device that can't at least maintain between 3 and 4 hours of battery life even at the most intense use.

Dont play AAA games on a portable handheld.
Also Skyrim at 800p high only used around 9-11w and lasted 4+ hours so looks fishy to me.

Maybe it's because it can run every single game ever made and it's better than the switch which you're jealous of?

But your image is showing battery life as roughly proportional to how fun each game is...

I get 4-5 hours from all the stuff I play at full brightness and max settings. This list is obvious bullshit.

How long can you run emulated games on it?

SNES, GBA or PS1 for example?

8 hours minimum. Although I will say Steam Deck is overkill for those consoles. Any $200 bullshit chinese handheld can run them perfectly.
