>For a price of Deck, you can get a pretty damn good gaming laptop
Last I checked there weren't any non-used laptops for $399 as powerful as the Steam Deck. Has that changed?
That's an older-generation chip that can't fully handle Vulkan. Nvidia is already talking about EOLing driver support for those cards as a result.
Not a good use of money when you can get an RDNA2 chip in the Deck.
399 (without the TAX, mind you) grants you the shittiest version of Deck, with a puny 64GB storage. Obviously NO dedicated GPU and underpowered specs in general.
You can still get brand new i5 / ryzen 5 + GTX 1650 laptops for 499. I got a yesteryear's Asus model with i5-8K + 1050ti 4GB + 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD, and it runs anything I throw at it at the native 1080p / 60. Still has a 4h battery life on Wifi.
This is true why are Steam Deck shills gaslighting this post
I own both deck and laptop
If steam deck had physical keyboard under 399 then deck would've been better than laptop without the keyboard no way deck is better than the laptop
You can easily find laptops with RTX 3050 for as low as $600, at that price range they're a no-brainer.
Also, the 512GB Deck is severely overpriced, you can find SSDs with that much storage for $40. If you really want a Deck, it's smarter to just buy the base model and upgrade it yourself.
this makes sense but no sense for steam deck shills and morons here
it depends: >will you do something else besides gaming? >will you play fps that require KB&M? >will you use it to play while traveling? >will you play at your friends' houses?

You only would get a steamkek over a laptop if you're poor.
And even then you can get a used 100$ laptop that can pretty much do the same things you will use a steamkek for but better

>you will rarely to ever play games on the go with such unwieldy thing.
I got my very first gaming laptop for both school and travel purposes back in 2010, and it revolutionized my life.
Not having to lug around your tower, the monitor, KB + M, audio devices, tons of cords, and then set up it in some corner of your mother's house or in your hotel room felt extremely liberating.
Not to mention the sheer SPEED it had compared to my Uni's ancient WinXP and MacOS 10.5 wormboxes... should've done it sooner.
And I already had a 1200€ desktop at home, mind you.

Nobody plays vidya on a fricking bed.
And if they do, I feel sorry for their backs and eyes.
I have both a high end gaming laptop (alienware m17 r3 w/ rtx 2080 super and 16gb dd4) and a top teir steam deck.

You are not wasting a carry-on bag and playing on your laptop in an airport.
You are not using your laptop in your car in the parking lot waiting to go to work.
You don't set up your laptop to play in bed or on the couch.
The deck does all of those things, and really fricking well.

the deck benefits from scale and valve basically losing money on the lower end models.
The price point got debunked already. Theres nothing stoping them from using lower end hardware.
This device is shit due to igpu and 4 gb ram, but i dont see how its not upgradeable to a usefull point with an actual keyboard and good design for less than 700 additional bucks
If I'd buy a portable gaming handheld computer, it wouldn't be for AAA PC games, it'd be for visual novels and JRPGs, because up to this point the only solution was Remote Play with a Vita, PSP or a 3DS, or jerry-rigging something together with an Android or Windows tablet. Now we have devices that can run Windows or Linux natively and all of the games that come with those platforms. That being said, the Steam Deck is too big, heavy and battery-hungry to be considered portable.
Pic related is what I am interested in, considering the price point, the form factor and the hardware. In combination with Windows 11 and Bitsum Process Lasso, you can force all of the games I'd play on a device like this to use only the E-Cores from Intel's hybrid architecture CPU instead of the more power-hungry P-Core; while the P-Core is significantly faster, you don't need all of the performance it offers for things like visual novels and 99% of JRPGs. You can also limit the maximum frequency of both the P-Core and the four E-Cores for even better power efficiency. Emulation is a mixed bag, but it can handle some of it all things considered.
It all depends on what you're looking for out of a device, and I value form factor and efficiency the most. I'd just rather play visual novels and JRPGs face-up back-down in my bed after working all day than sitting and straining myself at my desk.

Deck has offline issue thus its ez gaming laptop for me
I like to play on controllers anyway so the steamdeck is the winner for me. If I played on laptop I'd have to lug around a wired xbox controller (because frick batteries) and that alone makes transportation a hassle. My steam deck case i got on amazon holds a portable power bank, earplugs, and lintcloth plus any removable storage I might buy. Perfect for gaming anyway I want. I had 8 plane trips a couple months ago and I played the shit out of darkest dungeon.

Can you emulate the switch on the Deck?
Went with a $500 laptop after I decided I didn't need a PS5. A few years ago though, I'd have definitely got a deck
i was going to buy a steam deck but i saw several benchmarks and the deck only has a 90 minute battery.
my phone gets 12 hours and can emulate switch games too, whats the point?
steamies think it's a secret benefit since most of them are consumer wagies who can only play an hour or vidya on any given day
Slightly concerned that the deck is a bit too big, why couldn’t they learn from Sony and make it compact
If you want to emulate, play indieshit and older games get the deck.
If you want to play AAA shit get a craptop.

There's a pretty big difference between lamenting and laughing, anon.

PS5
Steam Deck. Get a cheap laptop.
I had 8 plane trips a couple months ago and I played the shit out of darkest dungeon.
regular laptop for like 300-500 dollars + steam deck
same price, double the use case
flop
'eck. it has gyro+thumb pad and infinitely customizable control schemes for every game.
