Steam forced mandatory windows 10 upgrade

What is the more logical way to get around having to install that cancer?
Linux?
Piracy?
Will there be a way to get steam to still work and play games offline?

unless you start working on alternative client, which is STILL not gonna support XP or 7, lmao

Well wtf is gonna happen to the actual client when they do the change.
Is it just not going to work. What happens if I just never update the client I have now.

you will be able to play steam games on win 10 until 2032, just stop being a fucking stubborn luddite and learn how to tweak your os for your own needs

      >luddite and learn how to tweak your os
Its untweakable, that OS is fucking destroyed beyond belief from the core.
It is just incredibly UNuser friendly.
Its made for complete retards but in such a way anyone with knowledge of windows/DOS, it hampers.
This OS, I cannot stop processes I want to at all, i uninstall or suspend/stoop processes, it reinstalls, reactivates processes.
I have literal background processes which tbh I don't even know WTF they are doing, I stop them and they start straight back up, other ones I literally cannot stop, windows refuses to let me stop the process.
Just an FYI if you are into vidya you want every background process to stop except for absolute mandatory ones when you play vidya.
Like anti virus for example, you dont need that playing vidya.
try turn your anti virus off in windows 10, see what happens.

You simply didn't apply yourself enough lol it's not that hard at all to disable all the garbage microsoft services and stop them from being re updated, just look for specific tools that will do it for you there is plenty out there

          >You simply didn't apply yourself
I just use windows 10 on a shitposting laptop, I only uninstalled the bloatware and tweaked win 10 I didn't even wipe and reinstall OS, if I did I would have put 7 or XP on it. No fucking way would I install this shit on my PC.
Thing is I don't even need it on my PC either and my PC is over a decade old now so hardware issues would arise with windows 10 or 11, as well as games will stop being able to be used on newer OS.
Only reason there is an issue now is not because of the vidya, but because fucking steam is forcing others to install windows 10.

W7 autists wish they knew how to use Linux.

I can use linux but it is shit and shit for vidya, there are tons of games I have that wont work at all, let alone general programs I use.
Simple fact is PC gaming is built around windows, like it or not, installing windows for gaming you are gimping yourself.
All I use my PC for is vidya, music and watching movies from.
I dont even use it for web browsing. Linux is probably my last option.
First being just use 7 and go back to pirating.

No, that's bullshit, there are no games you have that work on Windows 7 but won't work on Linux. Linux users have DX12, you don't. Linux users have Vulkan 1.3, you don't. Linux users have EAC, you don't. Soon: Linux users have Steam, you don't.

Don't worry. It runs in userspace, you can sandbox it. Kernel-level rootkits will never be allowed on Linux for both technical and legal reasons.

Have you tried to play on on linux:
              Z
              C&C RA1, RA2, tiberiun sun
              Commandos, 2, 3
              Rome TW
              Med 2 TW
              Shogun 2 TW
              Worms Armageddon
              Witcher 1
              Hitman 2, contracts
              Abes odyssey/exodus
GTA VC (works like shit on PC, terrible port anyway)
              Bully
              Killer instinct, newest one.
All emulators from Snes gen to PS3 gen

If you tell me every one of these games work perfectly fine without having to jump through cunt hoops, basically how they do (mostly) work out of the "box" on windows 10.
Then I will think about installing fucking linux.
Until then I am not even wasting my time looking for a distro.

Medieval is literally marked as playable on steam deck, so it clearly runs on Linux. Rome too. I don't know about Shogun, I can't find it on my library so it's probably not working.

                >Do any of them have intrusive kernal level anticheat?
None of them are multiplayer games really apart from killer instinct but that is essentially an xbox game, the steam version is dead and if you want to play online you have to buy it on MS store, which I am not doing anyway, play local with friends.
rome and med 2 TW do have multiplayer, used to be done on gamespy but its dead, would need people to find matches and dont care for multiplayer TW I just play solo.
C&C has a revival fanbase though and I do play that multiplayer but that is fan made servers.

The point is most of these games are old, well before linux even had support by the community trying to make games playable on it.

Wine has been around since the 90s. I played WoW on Linux back in Wrath of the Lich King. The "community" doesn't need to add special tweaks and workarounds for every single game, old games generally just work.

All the older C&C games run flawlessly on Linux

Many older games run better on Linux. Both Linux and Windows 7 and up need compatibility layers/emulators to run older shit, and Linux does that a hell of a lot better.

Its like once a decade does a PC exclusive game comes out that is worth playing.
Just play everything on console and get that one game when/if it releases.
Not been since rome 2 total war when I last wanted to play a PC only games, which was the last time I upgraded my PC.
Sure there are some more games I have played on it since then but there hasn't been a reason to upgrade hardware for anything.
Only real games I wanted to play since then were on xbox so play them on PC (pirate)

In most cases yeah. Any multiplayer game, you are a retard to play on PC anyway, so they are console games.
Any multiplay game is a console game.
PC is really only for RTS/strat games and some Niche FPS games, which I dont play, but I do play BF4 which BF is a PC franchise.

EA killed C&C, after RA2 every game is shit.
TW was killed after shogun 2, I like R2 but every game gets worse since then and that game was a mess at launch.
I wont be looking to play another new TW game until rome 3 or med 3 drops.
There are occasionally a handful of isometrics worth playing but they are few and far inbetween.
What really else is there on PC, shovelware and star (scam) citizen

So yeah, games that are not old are not worth playing on PC.

Actually before you managed to do that, how did you stop the OS from updating, because if it updates, it will reinstall teh anti virus.
If you can answer that....maybe you uninstalled your anti virus.

I don't remember what happened to Windows defender but it's gone and updates do not restore it. Maybe it was never there. The service isn't there. Disabling updates are group policy, I sometimes do manual updates but not that often. I have enterprise version of Win 10, so maybe you need that to use the group policies.

I'm not defending Windows 11, I actually don't give a shit about how it's perceived, I've had no issues with it. I'm just pointing out the lunacy about the same statements people have been making for centuries. Whenever a new WinOS comes out, people start shitting on it and defending the older generation, always moving it up by a number. I still remember how much people hated Windows 7 back in the day, and now here's a retard advertising it. It's so stupid.

If you're STILL on windows 7 there's a strong possibility none of the games are going to have the issues with compatibility that linux currently faces (Developers deliberately going out of their way to make sure their games don't work on linux because cheaters, maybe?)

Nah, though I suppose if you changed hardware or something it might want to re-authenticate your steam login. You could probably bullshit that through SteamCMD.

        >last good Steam version
By this you mean before it updates at the end of the countdown or what?

Presumably, unless they built a kill-switch into that too. I'm still running the last XP-compatible version of Steam locked down, because I flatly refuse to allow mandatory updates of my games.

          Anonymous

          >if you changed hardware or something it might want to re-authenticate your steam login
Which I will not do but i have noticed before when I log into steam on my laptop or my phone it asks me to relog again on PC, which may be an issue.
I might try to get an up to date client a few days or a week before the update for this solution.
I could really reinstall all my programs and clean my PC before Xmas and hope it all works perfectly until it dies and I never need to update steam.
Still if there is no steam functionality like achievements, guides or whatever, might as well just pirate the games anyway. I fucking own them so it's not even illegal, not that I give a fuck.

          >I'm still running the last XP-compatible version of Steam locked down,
          Do you have the installer?
If so can you dump it in a mega or whatever.
Im sure it will only be alike a 10mb file.

            Anonymous

The last Steam installer I have is from 2013. It's an msi installer, and it's not the full package(1.6MB), it connects and then downloads shit from Valve. The point where I stopped updating it was five years later. The important part about it is that the command line tricks work with that version, as well as console commands you can enter to force games to run even if they think they want to be updated. That means I can launch it without having to take secondary measures like blocking it in my firewall(though that's certainly an option).

As for getting the full thing today you'd need to start looking into using Steam DepotDownloader, and that's a whole other mess I'm not qualified to explain. I would say start searching Steam guides, there's probably multiple up right now that are about this very topic and will be relevant to the version of Steam you're using.

I think steam will ask you to go online 2-3 times a year to renew your offline session. It's been like 10 years since I last bothered looking into it, so things have most likely changed.

Win 10 is actually not that bad. I refused to upgrade for years but I had to do it recently because of software that I needed for my job didn't work on Win 7 and it's scheduler can't properly utilize all of the cores of my new processor.

It's okay. Most of the issues are ironed out.
    >spying

I would like to move to Linux permanently but I have Nvidia video card and their drivers on Linux are FUCKING GARBAGE.
    Also HDR support almost nonexistent.

Win 11 is indeed a shit. You only need to install it if you are retard who bought new Intel CPU with useless e-cores. Only Win 11 can use them properly.

When I'm going to upgrade in the future I of course will need to install new OS for new drivers and new thread scheduler but if rumors about Win 12 being cloud OS are true then I'm definitely moving to Linux.

Its not rocket science. While there is a process going on that is not needed it is taking away resources that could be spent computing the programs you do want active.

              >Every background process that is not needed is affecting your performance
Modern CPUs have enough cores to handle dozens of background processes.
The are no games out there that utilize 100% of your cpu.
I play all the time with browser opened in background with multiple tabs and have no performance loss.

I cannot give examples and I never look at things like that, I only use DXdiag for information not install bloatware like speccy.
But it is noticable increases in performance all around,, web browsing vidya etc, and you will be able to find a small program what is basically a simple widgit in your desktop or whatever to park and unpark. Which when you play vidya, you actually want to shiut down all background processes, unpark cores and play. When you general use computer turn anti virus on, park cores etc.

                >overclocking doesn't exist
Most of the modern games are GPU bound. You'll have to OC the card, not CPU to get best results.
By OCing your CPU you will gain small fps boost but you will get big electricity bill and lower your CPU's lifespan.
                >doent know how to upark all the cores
Do you know that unparking wont do shit if the game engine is not optimized for that? Which is the case with 99% of the current games.
Just run any modern AAA slop you have with thread monitor overlay and you will see that only 4-6 cores are utilized 100%, the rest are only used 5-20%

Can you tell me what this actually is.
I mean I guess it is a stripped down version of win 10 which is what I would want, but isn't this some sort of official windows version for experienced users or someshit.
Ideall I want a classic black version.
If you dont know what that is, simple explanation is a pirated version where everything but the most basic needed things to function has been stripped from it. Even the web browser was gone, but it comes installed with a folders of exe you would need on the desktop. Firefox, Ccleaner, Utorrent etc.
I have an XP black disc somewhere and just fucking everything is gone.
      Best OS I ever used.

It's Windows 10 Pro stripped down to functional on extremely low end hardware, the kind you see on cash registers, or those electronic menus you see in McD's or KFC that you use to order your food. It's basically Windows 7.
I'm running it on my main PC and it plays all the games, runs adobe products, torrent clients work, basically everything that would work in Win7 or normal Win10 it works in Win10 LTSC IoT 2021, you also get the benefit of support until 2032, so you can skip not just Win11, but Win12 too.
I've also installed it on an ancient laptop from 2010 with first gen Intel I5 CPU + iGPU, and it works flawlessly, just as good as if I were to run Win7 on it (or Linux for that matter)

I am looking for black versions now.
Look XP black is the most seeded version, the OS was that good. Win 10 black seems to be using the exact same version you are mentioning as a basic before they black it.

              Anonymous

Black version is a scene groupo rip of teh OS, where they have customized it, so think like a linux distro.
What I am looking for is a black version where fucking everything has been ripped out of it, like that anon saying LTSC version of wondows is stripped down, I want it even more stripped down.
When I last DL win XP black which was 2013, it was so much of a fucking small DL it was less that 1gig, like 600 or 700mb, everything was gone from it, all there was was an black skull and crossbones image as a wallpaper a activator rip and a folder with exes on the desktop of general needed programs.,

Scene groups compete and nuke releases as well as set the standards of rips, so like vidya and movie rips they are the ones as the authority and generally have best rips of the OS.

11 is required if you want to take advantage of HDR properly and other features.

                Anonymous

10 is basically broken with HDR. Windows 10 is not aware of your monitors peak nits so how can it accurately display it to your monitor? At best you have to rely on in-game calibration but not every game offers this or they suck ass at it most of the time requiring mods to fix it but that isn't even guaranteed due to games anti cheats triggering or crashing your game.

Only 11 is aware of it and you can calibrate it with their application only available on 11. Not to mention 11 has auto HDR which can be brute forced on all games even emulators which makes old games look better than ever before.

I'm talking about native hdr not forced one

                just install SteamOS

SteamOS for desktop pcs is old garbage form 5 years ago.
                It's based on debian.
New SteamOS for 'eck is based on Arch and has new updates. For now it's 'eck exclusive.

                Anonymous

You cannot compare HDR through screenshots. Printscreen on Windows only captures the frame from your GPUs frame buffer. It doesn't apply the extra processing by the OS and even it did not every monitor can display it correctly because that HDR image could have been calibrated for that display but not yours. At best you can only kind of compare through videos but again that's subject to YouTube color and bitrate compression which destroys the image defeating the purpose of the comparison.

                good morning sir

I'm just going to assume this is true without double-checking it.
My current monitor can dim down to nothing when asked, and it can produce blinding light when required. All during the same HDR scene.
I'm completely content with the range I'm getting.

                Anonymous

HDR is subjective to the beholder hence the multiple "HDR certifications" from different groups. One may prefer HDR so dim you can't see shit on a OLED in dark scenes, others prefer searing bright lights like staring at the sun, and don't forget about the people who either want overexposed vivid colors or something more accruate to SRGB.

                Anonymous

That's actually not how any of it works.
The difference between the different HDR specifications is the difference in ranges supported - be it luminance or color gamut.
There's nothing "subjective" in HDR specifications, they all are objective by design.

                Anonymous

People buy TVs based on their subjectivity they see inside their store. A TV can say HDR but it doesn't mean it's producing "accurate HDR". They may rate the displays objectively but that's in a controlled test scenario not what normies actually do.

Still I have no reason to install 11, I only need 10 because of steam and it seems I can get a LTSC black scene rip which will work until 2032, should be perfectly fine.

      >10
more bloat, inefficient babified UI for tablets
      >11
slightly more bloat, UI even more babified for tablets (because 11 was a hasty asset flip of the scrapped windows 10X)
secure boot and TPM required; can be bypassed and the OS will still mostly work, but some game anti-cheats will refuse to work if do you so, so 11 on unsupported hardware is functionally inferior to 10
enthusiasts who buy up to date hardware should also beware that some features like new CPU schedulers require recent non-LTSC builds of windows, but anyone using old enough hardware to run pre-10 doesn't need to worry about this

Valve just wants more people to use Linux. Gabe hates Microshit and doesn't want his privately owned company to go bankrupt if Winshit forces Winstore installations etc. This is just another move to get some more people to use Linux. That's also why Steam Deck exists. They need more people using Proton so they can make it better and better to the point where games run better there, which already is the case for some. And when there's enough people using Linux, corpotards won't be able to ignore it due to """market share"""

Linux has better compatibility for games, and often games run better on them due to lack of bloat.

The only reason some games won't run are anti-cheats, which companies don't add as they don't want to be arsed. If Linux grows then they'll be forced to.

At least for the non-kernal level anti-cheats. If you're playing a game with those thing whining about Windows is the least of your concerns.

Wine is not a translation layer, it's an open source method of handling .exe instructions. Microsoft uses a magic black box that does whatever it wants to handle .exe files. There could be any kind of strange and unnecessary processes in there.

There isn't a single argument for using out of support operating systems. If you truly want to use something out of date, go back to 98 or XP and cry more at the lack of support.
No operating system offers lifetime support, and software suppliers shouldn't be expected to support operating systems that don't have vendor support.

If you decide to update, you're being pressured to give up your preferred OS even though no matter what you update to it's only a matter of time before it becomes outdated, so you might as well just keep updating to the latest version.

      >so you might as well just keep updating to the latest version
No need to install 11 over 10 unless you have israelitetel cpu with castrated e-cores.
11 has a lot of issues just a month a go there was a bug that bricks your win 11 install if you had ayymd card.
Or there was another bug where ssd performance was garbage
Or there was a bug where your home folder could be deleted automatically

      11 is still unstable.
It's the default rule of the Windows. Update to latest version only when really necessary or new one comes out and previous one is more or less stable

At this rate it's better to stay on 10 and wait for 12.

      >Otherwise just use Rufus, it'll download official clean ISO directly from Mircosoft servers

IDK WTF that shit is and they are like ghost bots, you can have 12 active ata time but touch one to try and find what it is and where teh process is leading too and it dissapears amd is changed with a different one....constantly
              Ghost bots...
That shit, well total processes I cannot turn off I estimate that is using 100-200mb RAM
I cannot even cancel the search function, had to suspend it but if I didn't it was using like 60mb RAM by default, unused!

Nvidia works better on linux than it does on windows. Funny how not having an OS that eats 50% of your ram helps.

            >Nvidia works better on linux than it does on windows
Lolno. Their drivers are legit poop, I have Nvidia gpu and I tried linux.
Their control panel on linux is so barebones. It lacks all of those 3d settings you have in Windows like forcing AA and anisotropic filtering.
The only thing you can do is change resolution and screen refresh rate. No I'm not making shit up. It's THAT bad.

The problem of W7 homosexuals is that they're prime example of nagger cattle bred by Microshit with complete computer illiteracy. They don't know why it's important to have up to date system. They don't know what did it take for both software developers and Microsoft to support wide variety of Windows versions in order for them to say "well, this shit just works on my OS". And when one of actor decided "fuck this, I don't want to support obsolete shit" W7 trannies will become hysterical because for them Microsoft somehow fucks them over by forcing them to upgrade their systems (not like there were fucked even on W7).
And of course they're too retarded to switch to Linux where developers respects your freedom and privacy.

      Anonymous

You also forgot to mention windows is bloated on purpose. A lot of companies and governments pay Microsoft a lot of money to ensure that their legacy programs run on modern windows hardware. This means a lot of useless legacy code which could be streamlined is left in.

        Anonymous

That's true, and what is more scary is that some other developers will still use some of obsolete components for their software because they would think that it's still actively maintained. Example: Persona 4 Golden which was released on Windows 2020 has problems on Linux because it was dependent of a fucking WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 9 which for some retarded reason was still existing in Windows 10 (I bet for compatibility with some old ass shit software).

This is exactly the case. Steam only ships VC++ and .NET redists.
If you tried actually looking at system requirements of new games on steam page all of them specify that you need at least Version 2004 (May 2020 Update) for dx12 ultimate.

Except for how it doesn't get "feature" updates that break your system every other week and only has the essentials so you can build up on them, for example it doesn't have the windows store but you can bring it back with 1 command (why though).
It's Windows as it should be, only the functional basics so you can focus on doing whatever else.

I get more value out of my PC than you simply because you're running LTSC. There's also
            >Microsoft Edge mode - This mode allows you to open legacy websites that require Internet Explorer 11 directly in Microsoft Edge.
            >Taskbar customization - Windows LTSC does not allow you to customize the Taskbar as much as Windows 11 Pro. For example, you cannot drag and drop apps to the Taskbar or create custom toolbars.
            >Context menu customization - Windows LTSC does not allow you to customize the context menu as much as Windows 11 Pro. For example, you cannot add or remove custom items from the context menu.
            >File Explorer tabs - File Explorer tabs allow you to open multiple folders in a single window. This feature is not available in Windows LTSC.
            >Virtual desktops - Virtual desktops allow you to create multiple desktops on your PC and switch between them. This feature is not available in Windows LTSC.

Im not nostalgic for an OS I would rather use the more up to date one, it is just windows 10 is fucking shit and by the sounds of it 11 is no different. Tbh I would rather still be using the same OS as DOS or windows 95, just shit has to change and they have to rewrite it or it wont function on newer hardware.
OS is a tool so they dont need to reinvent it in the slightest, it just needs to function.
It follows the trend of MS releasing a shit OS after a good one, but sounds 11 is super shit as well so maybe 2 shit OS before a good one or we never get a good MS OS ever again.

The whole process was an absolute nightmare. Nothing worked out of the box and I had to manually look up drivers for every piece of hardware. Because USB and internet didn't work without drivers I had to boot linux from usb to download drivers on the hdd. That was like, 4 or 5 years ago? worse performance and less security isn't "bloat". Also, those features if unused take up disk space which has no bearing on performance at all.

If moving the taskbar is cosmetic so are virtual desktops, snap layouts, live tiles, desktop groups, teams integration, and context menu customization.
And still, no answer for them removing features that existed.
