213+ games is nothing. Even if they were all 20-50 hour games, you could still knock them out in 2-6 years.

          Anonymous

If I played the idyllic amount of 8 hours per day (the maximum free time an adult can have if they had no other things to attend to)
It would take ~500 days to complete all.

I never play 8 hours a day and it's very hard to maintain that pace unless it's a specific addiction to a game
By saying several years I'm not exaggerating.

I liked Monomyth and Underspace, which I'm pretty sure are both games made by anons from here. Voxelands feels like it has potential. Echoes of the Plum Grove was a guilty pleasure.

        Anonymous

Monomyth seemed like it had some neat ideas and I'm glad to see something trying to be Dark Messiah/Arx Fatalis but man did it feel rough around the edges. The stealth seems really binary as to whether you're in light or shadow, and I kept bashing my sword on walls since there's no way to specifically go for a stab/overhead swing that I found. Still, had some fun doing immsim shit and stacking boxes.

          Anonymous

Monomyth I feel has a chance to turn it around. Dev is active and working on fixing problems as they arrive so it is very important for anyone who is a fan of the genre to pour as much feedback onto the dev as possible. I've reported numerous bugs and given plenty of feedback in hopes he can turn it around.
One thing I really am not a fan of is how it kind of locks you into combat just to introduce a dodge button. And if you target lock something good luck ever hitting it.
Also, the weapon distance feels very off since you have to be damn near standing on top of the enemy in order to hit (especially smaller enemies like rats and slimes).

Here is the real kicker, have you ever played Freelancer. If you are familiar with Freelancer's control scheme you will be right at home with Underspace.
It's an alpha, most of that tutorial stuff you can add later on.
You could have looked in the options menu at any time to check the keybinds.

What I'm trying to say is just go fricking play freelancer first.

those are those freakshows that go around and say you have to get consent from people for everything these days, even when it doesn't apply to having sex.

Like if you played porn your tablet while you were riding on a plane or something and the guy beside you saw it and tried to accuse you of sexual assault. His lack of consent is irrelevant because you weren't having sex with him but there's a sect of demonworshippers out there that try to control everyone and everything around them.

Headquarters: World War 2, despite sounding like the most generic half-assed shit ever from the title, seems like a pretty solid turn-based strategy game. The reinforcement system just letting you recrew a vehicle in the middle of a fight feels a bit silly, though.

I think it's harder and a bit more strategy is required. I only did the first mission but I liked it. It's more similar to X-Com in that your units are just generic soldiers that you can customize. When it releases I think I'm going to run 4 beastmasters for the memes.

I've played a lot of fricking garbage in this Next Fest so I'm only going to list the ones I thought were alright, and also Hollowbody.
    >Scars of Mars
A node-based roguelite where the player manages four party members in a 3x3 grid by swapping control between them to move them and attack. Attacks need to be aimed and friendly fire is an element so battles are fast-paced if you want to avoid damage and stop your battery from draining by wasting time. You can also use the last few seconds at the end of a battle to quickly reposition units or bust out a heal before moving to the next node. The writing is bland but the UI is sleek and I'm enjoying the combat already. It does seem lacking in per-run events however.
    >Crow Country
Survival horror game with 3D environments that look like pre-rendered PSX environments. Pretty nice aesthetics aside from the MC's questionable nose, and I like the control touches too. Not very scary, but still entertaining.
    >Never Grave
Hollow Knight retooled into Dead Cells. Feels alright to play so far and I like the girl's animations but the demo does come across as rather shallow in content.
    >The Touhou Empires
It's an AoE2 clone with strong special units like in Age of Mythology. It seems alright but the big problem is that the demo only gives you the one "race" to play as so you can't get a feel for how much variety the full game will actually have, and without tactics commands it turns into deathball vs micromanagement later in a match.
    >Hollowbody
Silent Hill knockoff except doors have key cards instead of keys. Mediocre sound design, bad melee combat with nothing stopping you from cancelling weapon swing and kick animations into each other, enemies with terrible AI where they can't even walk at you in a straight line properly, a bad item interface where you scroll through them one by one and used keys aren't discarded afterwards, and frick the camera too holy shit. The only thing I can praise here is that the voice acting isn't terrible.

    hopefully leading to valve's bankruptcy.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

artifact sounds like the sort of garbage someone like you would enjoy playing, I suspect this based on the fact that you admitted it, so, factually, based on the evidence, valve cancelling dogshit video games that you enjoy is actually a consumer-friendly practice because you are garbage, the things you like are garbage, and everything you loved or touched or were in the vicinity of, was garbage. you are a garbageman

Abiotic Factor: Crashed immediately, gay, 1/5
Aden: Really cute and fun, controls are a bit messy 3/5
Crow Country: As another anons noted, the shooting is bad. Still a cool twist on the formula, 3/5
Crypt Custodian: FRICKING disappointing, HOLY SHIT. I wanted a HLD-style game so bad but the twee humour and the lazy, predictable writing turned me off so hard I had to close the game. Revolting, 0/5
    Dotage: Annoying and stupid, 2/5
Emberbane: This was such a long demo, it was like an hour. Emberbane is another one of those Guacamelee-style games although I think I like this one a bit more than average, reminded me of Blackthorne a lot, 3/5
Metallic Child: Too much talkingggggggggg, holy shit frick offfff, gameplay is fine, 2/5
Nevergrave, too much farming and gated progression for me to want to keep playing. This is exactly the sort of shit I hate in games, like yeah do 20 runs to get a +5% to damage, how about no, 1/5
Pacific Drive: Nonstop crashes, frick this, 1/5
Pepper Grinder: Insta-wishlist, this fricks HARD, 5/5
Raw Metal: The sneaking is good but the combat feels like a punishment for getting caught with a lot of RNG and cheesing being the best strats. This would be fine except it's mandatory for the boss fights and it's not good enough for that, 2/5
Star Trucker: Detached my trailer in the wrong spot, spent like 10 minutes fiddling with the controls trying to reattach it, then ragequit. This is obviously good though, just not for me. 3/5
Studio System : Guardian Angel: Feels like a GhostTundra game or something, LOVE the artstyle. Controls are a bit jank though and there's no way to save I can find, 4/5
Synergy: Best game of the fest for me so far, I love the fusion of Caesar and Settlers it's got going on although it had a few tiny nitpicks, 5/5
Worldless: Maybe I just played it at a bad time but it was frustrating me. When I finally beat the first boss only for him to have a second form I just closed the game, 2/5

Based on my picks, what should I play next?

I want to like Crown Wars: The Black Prince but its soundtrack is so fricking boring. I really like the combat and I enjoy turn-based games but the unenergetic music and having to move up units one-by-one even when you're out of combat puts me to sleep. Also, the female units are something I can forgive if they all didn't have the same annoying nasal voice actor. Then I ran into a bug in the second mission where I couldn't proceed because a gate wasn't open and someone in the Steam forums said it happens if your resolution is too high.

      >having to move up units one-by-one even when you're out of combat
This game's my first time playing these kinds of tactical turn-based squad games and I was wondering if that's a regular part of them. These levels seem pretty big and moving through them is a real slog.
The UI is also really fiddly and unintuitive, it's a complete coin toss if pressing Esc moves you back one menu level or not and things are buried in so many submenus and separate tabs getting anything done takes forever. Like a simple thing of going from the Barracks menu straight to the mission map isn't a thing, gotta first cancel out of the barracks into the main castle view and only then does the map button appear. And if you're in a submenu like the barracks, clicking the cog icon in the top right just takes you back to the castle view (redundant with the "back to castle view" button), but on the castle view it opens the system menu with options/quit game etc.
It's also really poorly optimized but that might just be demo roughness (probably not).

Just finished it. It's a very, very odd game. I like the concept of hiking around the hills getting lost and the game delivers on that front at the start where you're driving around, have to orient yourself on a map, choose where to go, and eventually have to get out so you can start following some vague directions to find some remote village. But all the while the advertised "RPG" mechanics just leave me scratching my head because of how out of place they are. Your character needs to be fed every few minutes, there's a stress system for your arms and legs that requires you to rest after a while, you can sprint but it's an active skill that has a cooldown, you can run out of gas after 20 minutes of driving, all of the game terminologies are very RPG-centric like describing your travelling group as a "Party" or the characters being able to unique mundane things that others can't like being able to set up a camp and calling that a Skill with a capital S. And then there's the story which is presented in a really weird non-chronological way, on top of having supernatural elements like collosi and the game treats this as completely normal and your main character's motivation is also very normal as finding some guy she lost contact with.

It's like the game was made by normalgays who played one JRPG in their life and loved it but their main passion is hiking, because the game has a lot of mechanics that clash and weird elements that defy convention, not because the game is deliberately trying to be differentiate itself but because the devs seem ignorant. In the dev's own broke English words on the Steam forums "It's hard for us to pinpoint the genre of the game as well, since it blends different elements. But I like to describe it as a JRPG, but instead of a fighting system, we use crossing systems." Whatever that means.

It's fun gun autism though, I've played through the demo 3 times and using the lever action doesn't get old, getting overwhelmed and panicking actually organically making you start to mess up your gun handling is really immersive, and it feels great when it becomes second nature. Easily would've been the best demo in nextfest if it was participating.

                >it runs counter to twitch-fast gameplay
It really doesn't though? You can play it corner peaking slow and steady for push the frick through weaving through enemies behind and above pillars while picking up HP on the fly. The complications make it more fun and tense, not tedious, unless you just don't find it satisfying to rapidly reload your weapon with a series of three inputs.

It's like the Gears dilemma with the perfect reload system. It's another system that adds another layer of error to punish players not focusing on the other aspects of the firefight. That is until muscle memory kicks in after hours of grinding.

Even then, that's Doom. Twitch fast gameplay isn't exactly its hallmarks of gameplay unless you do it in a speedrun-type route especially with the limited way movement is implemented compared to the Quake titles where movement is king. Hence those WADs trying to make Doom play like Quake by adding more verticality and movement options.

Is that not fun? Getting the muscle memory to manage a weapon under stress is appealing, at least to me, and the way Citadel does it is a lot more interesting than Gears.

Only at a certain point then it just detracts from the maneuvering and flanking Gears' gameplay is based on. It's an argument between purity of focus vs complexity of systems.

i dont know about the rougelite part but there is no open world. its small levels where you drive from a safehouse and down a single path so you can ultimately stop driving and collect junk in a scrap so you can then go craft items. I'm sick of craftslop.

A big thing for me is that the game starts off strong with no UI but then have to pick up a headset that adds a really ugly digital computer UI that looks llike its from Dying Light.

Rotwood is boring I don't get the hype.
Tiny move variety, constant stat padding for progression instead of anything fun, way too much time spent fighting enemies that barely fight back.
Expected it to be closer Final Knight where the hammer actually has most of the same moves as MH given the comparisons people have been making, but its puddle deep instead

      Anonymous

From what I've read in the comments, later gear has more variation since it changes your skill move (b button). The hammer in this game is more like the basic starter weapon designed for people who just want to mash, I guess closer to the SnS or LS. Funny you mention monsters not fighting back because most of the critique from people new to this sort of game is that monsters keep interrupting their combos, despite the game making it clear dodging is more important than mashing.

No shit, it's a demo. You'll only be playing like 2% of the game's content. The only problem this has is that your game is so shallow that the content provided by the demo is content enough for the player.

              Anonymous

For a lot of people the demo provides enough gameplay to satiate them. Runescape still has a frickton of F2Pers who aren't just bots and venezuelans.

Fake exclusivity to get you to hurry the frick up. Also, a lot of these demos are janky alpha builds made only to give you a first look, so they end up looking dated later on. Updating these (and creating them in the first place) takes away manpower that could be used on the full version.
Also, I think demos might no longer be essential for promotion and presentation of games now that you can look up a gameplay vid to form an opinion.

    >Eclipsium
Fantastic. Puzzles are straightforward but interact with the environemnts well, and the transitions through surreal spaces are fricking fantastic. Really can not wait to play more.
    >Mullet Mad Jack
Shockingly good, just a little slippery and the katana feels like shit. Otherwise you get used to the spastic visuals really fast and the English VA isn't bad when she's shouting. Game has a great flow to it, pickups are all cool and form simple builds for your ten floors, interested to see how meta the plot gets. Just hope the bosses get crazier.
    >Rotwood
It's cute and seems like it has a lot of perks and items going on. Weapons have a good amount of combos that keep combat engaging. Not sure if I'd play it by myself but I could see it being a fun roguelite beat em up with friends.

    >Corpus Edax
Could not be more disappointed with this. Not terrible but I can only hope it's in hard alpha. Doesn't feel like there's a ton of choice or freedom so far, game needs better explanations, combat needs refined impact and sound (I swear enemies don't have at hit sound sometimes). Hacking and lockpicking seems completely useless in the demo. Just not a whole lot going on and not a lot to look forward to.
    >Zero Below the Sun
Trash. Crosses RE with The Thing but none of the monsters are based off specific NPCs so it just feels like a waste. Game feels bland. Bad UI. Missing sounds for doors and rolling.
    >Void Crawler
There's a really cool fricking idea here but it just ends up being tedious constantly refueling oil and coolant for your crawler ship and returning back to base for every single fricking crystal. Scares are lame (whoa there's a pilot standing in the flickering light that wasn't there before, oh no flashing face on my screen), and the voices sound AI generated with how directionless they are. Someone else steal the idea of a horror dungeon crawler where you pilot a mech or capsule below the surface of a nightmare planet please.

      hard to design, yes.
not hard to make if you just want it to function at a base level.
The hardest thing to make is good netcode, followed by an input handler that allows for enough leniency but not too much, plus any additional modes such as tools for training modes.
it's a lot of work regardless but the basics of fightan aren't that hard to implement or we'd never have seen beat em up flash games

Although something changed is that before the face was rounder (therefore, more e-girl)

+1 to Fortune's Run, its a fairly unique feeling game, if you like the Immersive sim genre.

Fortune's Run doesn't have a demo available tho?

Spooky Milk Life is from several festivals ago
Furthermore, it's a game that is the same as Summertime Saga, that is, it will not be released until 2030 until the dev squeezes every penny out of its patrons.

A shame because it's a very good WEG.

Do you think there's more to the gameplay of Star Trucker than we've seen or do you just teleport from hub to hub and then hitch/park? I want to be excited for the game but it's missing something to really make me feel like a trucker in space

Probably. I can't imagine all you do is go between inhabited zones all the time. That'd be very boring and lazy of the devs.

The trailer shows what looks like a "bad weather convoy" through an astroid field so maybe some hubs are bigger challenges or emptier than others?

Thought I was the only one having problems downloading shit from Steam for a bit although it was game updates refusing to download for me telling me it couldn't reach the content servers until it just decided to randomly work.

Rare cinematic/atmospheric platformer from a Jap dev, controls are sluggish (swinging on chains feels like shit) but the level design is solid, set on a sinking ship so occasionally the levels rotate and fill with water

I'm liking Millennia quite a bit.
It has some changes over civ that seem very interesting.
Like it gives you different ages depending on what happens during a game. Bronze age usually leads into iron age, but if there are too many wars you can get the age of blood instead which forces everyone to be at war with each other and gives access to unique techs and units.
Or if there are too many big cities with poor sanitation you can get the age of plague instead of the normal medieval age.

The way cities work is very different too, now they're "regions" which seemingly expand almost endlessly where you can place down new towns within the region instead of getting new settlers to make new regions.
So where you'd have 10 cities in civ, you might have 3-4 regions with multiple towns instead, which is supposed to reduce the micromanagement.
Growing a region is also a bit more involved: as the population grows they get more needs, first only food but eventually: housing, sanitation, education, power etc.
Also the various resources now have a supply chain where for example: a mine gets metal (small production boost) -> turned into ingots at a smelter (medium production boost)-> turned into tools (large production boost) or weapons (military boost) at a smith.

Basically it seems great if you like to play civ as a builder or you like to go "tall".

why not lol, it would be the same if you walked into high level area when exploring in rpg or something, you still can get surprised and have to run before you get upgrades, but you have the freedom to find cool stuff on your own. Right now it feels like you have to go there only because strong independant woman tells you to.

They should have just made it like Jelopy and given you a choice of paths to go down. Maybe even have the radio guys tell you a bit about them, like one is shorter but more dangerous, or one is more dangerous but it used to see a lot of traffic so there's a bunch of broken down cars you can scavenge, or whatever.

It's a walking simulator with extra steps. It's just a curiosity and the narrative works better than most of the counterparts in its genre. It being made by ruskies instead of some homosexual westoid gives it a special charm.

god I am so disappointed by stormgate.. as a broodwar player it has been hyped to ALL SHIT from all of our "content creators" because they have no lives and need stability for their income stream.. the game is dogshit compared to even sc2, which isn't that great in the first place. But why the FRICK would you play stormgate over sc2? lmfao.

I wish we could get an actually good rts

our only hope is the koreans making a game that doesn't have MBS and unlimited unit selection. Every western developer runs into the same wall of "needing accessibility" and killing the game over it. no rts in the past 20 years has even flirted with the idea that brood war's popularity and skill ceiling had something to do with its control scheme. it's hilarious.
