But is it worth it to shell out for all but the last 2 expansions?

I don't really like HOI4, but it seems to be the most popular.
I got into GS with EU3 back when /gsg/ was still on Ganker. My favorite is Victoria 2. CK2 is the last paradox game I care about.

Pretty sure CK3 is the most popular

Is the Princes of Darkness mod fun? I have considered getting CK3 just to play it.

CK3 is only popular rn because of the new update and 50 percent off sale. Almost all the time, HOI4 is on top in player count despite being a 2016 game

Only buy expansions for the faction you are going to play. The "Aircraft designer" type shit all just gimmicks that you never end up using.

what's wrong with the last 2 expansions? i've stopped playing after bosprous so i dunno

By Blood Alone actively makes the game worse by owning it. The only good parts are either already added to the base game or are just blatant P2W garbage like stealing navies

what did blood alone add that was so bad?
          was no step back ok?

i was the same, it's rough at first but then something just clicks and you at least understand enough to start having fun with it

You gotta try it to see it if you like it in the first place. I suggest pirating it first then buying it afterwards if you like it & want to support the devs

EU4 is better if you want to do something other than just wage war. HoI4 is fun if you want to play through silly alt-history paths though.

I'm more of a 4x guy so I do like doing stuff besides war, but I feel like in a WW2 setting I'd at least have a general idea of what I should be doing.

EU4 and CK2 are actually more forgiving because you have a much greater amount of time to frick around (400 and 700 years respectively) and usually if you screw up you can fix things later. In HoI4 you really only have a little over a decade and shit can go sideways for you real fast, the flip-side however is that there's less time investment per run and starting a new run is easy.

The problem with modern paradox games is that all the nations feel exactly the same.
At the time I found hearts of iron 1 and 2 overwhelming, but there was something neat about having a tech tree with hundreds of options and unique tech for certain nations and leader options that actually made a lot of impact. Also if the leader was shitty in real life they were shitty in the game.
Modern paradox doesn't really add terrible options anymore that handicaps your nation if you pick them.

they're dishonest games that dont give what they promise.

HOI4 is the worst GSG, it's too easy. I would barely even call it a GSG.

    Shill me on CK3
Why should I get it when I have CK2?

You shouldn't, in fact you should be happy that they stopped updating CK2 when they did since modern Paradox is shit.

You shouldn’t. It’s barely complete in the first place. I’d only buy it if it’s complete and if you like The Sims: Medieval Edition

It's a worse game than CK2 in basically every way. Paradox hates the genre that they defined because muh golonialism so they keep trying to turn their map games into something other than games where you paint your color on a map.

That's what I thought, I shall wait longer until CK3 is complete. Thanks anons.
I bought Civ V many years ago with all its DLC for like $10, and I'm still waiting for Civ VI to go for the same price. I can wait.

I have 500hrs in HOI4. I think Crusader Kings is the best grand strategy start though. All the Paradox Grand Strategy games share a lot mechanics, so once you learn one, all the others sort of fall into place easily.

      Wrong.

For me it's EU4 and Stellaris. They're the only real grand strategy games in their field, other shit like Civ just doesn't come close. But Paradox is a israelite company that turns its players into paypigs. Wait a few years after every release until you can buy everything on sale, or stick it to them harder by buying africa-cheap keys on G2A or something. Or just nut up and pirate. Either way, don't pay full price, the game and its expansions aren't worth what they charge.

Probably a good start. I haven’t had a chance to really play those games in a long time though so maybe it got ruined by updates.
I was playing HoI 2:DD:A around 15 years ago with friends religiously. Say what you will about Paradox, I really don’t like them as a company, but whoever figured out how to turn niche, hyper-nerdy historical grand strategy games into Steam bestseller list multimillion unit products deserves a massive reward from the shareholders.
