A Wonderful Life was already a bad game. It getting modern Story of Season'd will probably just make it even worse somehow.

It's true that the original is a bad game. I think the remake has the potential to be better based on the promises of more content and the QOL improvements that can be expected based on those in the FoMT remake.
There's a chance that the remake won't be quite as atmospheric as the original though. I don't know how well-received the bittersweet and melancholic elements of the original were in moonland.

As a game, AWL is bad. I say so as a big fan of the series and someone who spent many hours playing it and SE.
As an experience, I think AWL is special. It's atmospheric and magical in a way that allows it to provide a lot of joy in the early game. Still, it's impossible to ignore the lack of content which becomes glaring sometime in the second chapter. The game becomes an aimless slog long before the ending is in sight because there's far too little to do and less reason to do it. You quickly run out of things to spend money on or raise animals for. Because of this, I've found that many fans have played and replayed the first chapter of the game happily, but have never been able to make it to the end.

What in the frick are you frickers talking about, AWL was fun as shit
I have less fond memories of Harvest Moon 64 primarily because of how God damn short the days were, Jesus

The days in 64 are short, but it just takes a couple in-game weeks to really get used to it and it ends up being a boon to the game; it keeps things fresh when you don't have time to do everything in one day and it prevents you from getting into a gameplay rut. I've always felt like 64 did the best job of preventing me from autistically min-maxing my time and allowing me to make more organic, on-the-spot decisions about when to forage or visit with characters.
Inversely, I feel that the days in AWL are too long, especially for how little there is to do each day. It's not something that you get used to as you play, it only gets worse.

If I wasn't a Harvest Moon freak back then I would have told you the game was worthless crap, but even then, the game kept me busy for hours, but mostly with a false sense of hope that something new happened in the game.

I've tried going through AWL a dozen times since I was younger, but I always end up doing everything by year two, the game becomes a slog from then on and I just end up dropping it.
64 is still my favorite one. I enjoy the challenge of the shorter days and it's the one that feels the most like a labor of love to me. Finally completed the photo album a few years ago.

Agreed. Going from BtN and FoMT to AWL was such a massive disappointment.

Only GCucks loved AWL. Shitty empty town, and the worst offender is le zany wacky villager designs. We went from down to earth designs like in BtN and FoMT to shit like pic related and the cyborg looking doctor. The game didn't feel like a comfy rural village sim anymore. Frick it. The only one that I liked was Flora and that's because she is a big tittied megane.

I never noticed this before, but AWL really did introduce a lot of oddball designs all of a sudden. I think the oddest pre-AWL design was Bob, who was just exaggeratedly muscular with bad posture.
As a side note about AWL, I think it had a really weak town cast overall. I hope the remake gives everyone a fresh opportunity to shine.

It didn't look godawful to me. I've had low expectations for bokumono's visual presentation for almost two decades now, so the the graphics and animations didn't surprise me. I'm quite interested in playing it.

I can see how AWL is the black sheep of the series, but I'm very fond of it since I played it as a young kid. Honestly farming sims don't appeal to me much, but AWL struck a good balance of being comparably shallow mechanically and having a colorful cast of characters that kept my adolescent attention.

I don't have any interest in this remake as it doesn't look better enough to revisit it rather than the original game.

AWL is not the absolute worst game in the series. Light of Hope is, followed by The Lost Valley. And if you don't want to count the ones Natsume made without Marvelous, then the worst OG HM would still be Island of Happiness for DS since the control scheme made it unplayable.

I would also say Magical Melody was also worst than AWL, but I really REALLY hated MM art style so I might be jaded. Gameplay wise it was probably better.

Magical Melody is far superior to AWL
The only issue with the artsyle is that males have a fat ass that looks like they all have an iron deficiency. Everything else looks really good.

        >AWL is the black sheep of the series
I don't think this description fits. AWL was popular and rather well-received in it's time, which is why it was rereleased twice, and why DS happened like it did.
I think the closest thing to a "black sheep" in this series is StH, which was rejected by many for having a gameplay time-limit and no marriage. (I know AWL has a time limit as well, but most players seem to have never reached it.)

Light of Hope and Lost Valley are definitely not part of this series and shouldn't be counted among it.

Cope homosexual. Wheter you like it or not Natsume played a big role in the games, as evidence by Marvelous having to change the way the Harvest Goddess look. Besides as of now they haven't pozzed their games like Xsneed.

If you really want to be a purist gay about it, HM/SoS died after they separated.

            Anonymous

There's no cope involved, dumbshit. Natsume did not develop any games in the 牧場物語 series. Their shit quality localizations aren't what gave the games their legs overseas; the games carried themselves despite the regular mistranslations, Engrish, spelling errors, and bugs introduced by Natsume. XSEED's localization is better quality and doesn't abitrarily remove features or censor things like alcohol into "soda".

Understandable on the SNES version since Nintendo was big on censoring anything not family friendly. Could have given it a Teen rating if they included alcohol. For MM, I don't think it was a Natsume mistranslation. The game already has an aesthetic to appeal to younger audiences. It's probably that they also mean soda in the japanese version. Do you have the item list in japanese to see if it was called wine?

Actually is true, I checked and it seems they censored from Sake to Soda so you were right they did censor it at least in that game. Doesn't change the fact Xsneed is a pozzed piece of shit company though.

              >XSEED's localization is better quality and doesn't abitrarily remove features or censor things like alcohol into "soda".
Why would a homosexual spread lies on the internet?
Natsume didn't censor "wine" in most of the games they worked on (Friends of Mineral Town even features it prominently in a sidequest to keep one NPC in the town) AND Xseed censored "wine" in the European version of their first Story of Seasons 3DS.

              >pozzed
It matters when games are delayed one year to adjust the "best friend/homosexual marriage" lines beyond the to-the-point lines that only appear when the marriage candidate is maxed out, and permeate the lust and degeneracy into every single interaction, resulting in Predators of Sex-Pest Town and Rune homosexualry 5 where shopkeepers and neighbors are more interested in discussing their fetishes than their wares or whatever they have going on. The entire writing is slanted to serve that one single aspect. No more gendering, no more rivalries, no more friendships, anything that walks that can be fetishized will have lines that wouldn't be out of place in a nineties hentai game.

As for Xseed's general writing quality, even before this, in the 3DS games you could present your blue feather to anyone, and anyone who would be obviously not marriageable would say something extremely generic to the effect of "This is a blue feather, I heard they are used to propose to people" or "you're planning to present it sometimes soon with someone you love? Good luck!". This includes kids of course, and a "literal translation" would be the absolute best choice.
But of course Xseed's progressive localizers would replace that with elaborate fanfiction about pedophilia.

Natsume's translations are leagues ahead of Xseed's shit job with FoMT and likely this one, and that's not even accounting for the decline in the game's quality.

                Anonymous

XSEED doesn't publish SoS for Europe. Natsume has censored alcohol in the past, even though they didn't do so in every game.

As somebody who considers it his favorite game in the franchise even to this day? I have no expectations. Absolutely none. It really boils down to will they actually make sure it's not a broken heap of shit, and the track record is pretty disheartening with Pioneers and RF5 still being in recent memory. Personally I'm glad a newer generation will be able to experience going into first person mode at the beach and watching the sunset. It's actually amazing how only five games in this series don't have a top-down/isometric perspective and one of those is on the goddamned PSP.

Scratch that, I have one hope. They don't frick up my wife with their new shit art style.

Isn't that what Van was for? I always sold my goods to him when he was in town, especially milk since you could haggle with him to sell at a higher price.

        >Is the remake of Friends of Mineral Town good?
Personally, I enjoyed it. I'm not massively nostalgic for the original FoMT, so I really appreciated the character redesigns and the QOL updates, as well as the new localization without Natsume's bugs and bullshit. I think it's a good way to experience FoMT for the first time, and still good for people who played FoMT in the past (like myself).
        >I'm not aware of any remake for A Wonderful Life
It was recently announced. See the OP image. AWL is being remade in seemingly the same spirit as the new FoMT, with character redesigns, gameplay updates, and added content like festivals, new animals, etc.

how is FoMT compared to POOT gameplay wise? I hated the farming machines you needed to place everywhere and villagers being soulless. I loved the of FoMT so I'd be willing to try the remake maybe

            Anonymous

FoMT has fixed locations for your farming structures and no "crafting" mechanic like PoOT's, so makers are a non-issue.
Personally, I didn't find PoOT's villagers to be soulless (although I lamented the lack of portraits), but if you liked the characterization of the original FoMT, I don't think you should have any problems with the remake.

It keeps very close to the original games, sometimes to it's detriment (the ridiculous requirements for stuff like the mountain villa, gems of truth and that pedometer ring are still the same). Otherwise it's fine if you don't hate the art direction, it's basically the same game with some QOL improvements and kinda superficial additional content.
It is pretty weird that it's a remake of a demake of a reimagining of a sequel though.

the series needs to go back slightly to the root, and by that I mean adding a little bit of reality back like any game from animal parade and beyond. Their attempt of wacky world are awful.

sadly the new games will never be as good as the old games. They simply don't know what makes the trinity of classic harvest moon goodm look at poot. the best games are64, btn, fomt and they simply cant capture or understand what made those games top tier.

Maybe to you but the story was the best part of it for me aside from the music, characters are second. But as you said the gameplay is kinda shit. That said the farming you do in the first 2 chapters is likely not even 1/10th of what is actually in the full game considering they also promised animal/monster raising, but we'll see if the demo is just bad at showcasing the game. The watering wand is way better than bokumono watering cans though, holding the button to make it shit out water infinitely is weirdly satisfying.

I assume that most of them are youngsters who had GBAs as children and never owned a Playstation. Pretty much anyone who swears by the original FoMT or is very nostalgic for it probably started the series with it.

the series needs to go back slightly to the root, and by that I mean adding a little bit of reality back like any game from animal parade and beyond. Their attempt of wacky world are awful.

    Been playing Rune Factory 5.
So far it's fun, definitely not better than 4, Frontier or Tides of Destiny
Complaints so far are the performance, even on PC it still stutters, and starting the game each time really has trouble loading up everything.
Character events can be a bit messed up, I started one but because it finished in the same place another one is, I had to finish that one before doing the one I actually wanted.
Artstyle is ass. Town should've been much much smaller.

      Anonymous

Are you liberally using your fast travel spots to mitigate the issue of the town being too big? I know it's not a perfect solution, but getting into the habit of fast-travel took me a while when playing so it's worth asking.

        Anonymous

Nah, I actually think the town is a good size.
I just meant that if the town was smaller, they wouldn't have to render so much stuff and have it look as bad as it is. Maybe it was a budget thing or new people working on the environment. Like they were biting on more than they can chew.

I get the impression that the dev teams of both RF and SoS are underskilled and underpaid these days. I don't think it's for a lack of wanting to make the games good that they come out looking and running like indie games or games from previous generations, but that Marvelous won't pay for more skilled programmers and artists, and/or won't give them enough money or time to get things done right.

      >Like they were biting on more than they can chew
That's my assumption, since if you look at the character models they really look pretty good. Hard to enjoy even that with the ass animations. It feels like they definitely ran out of time and rushed through everything else.

I'm using BeplnEx, RF5Fix (Download this one as it comes with BepInEx and is required for everything else), Better Furniture Placement, NPC Details, Craft and Upgrade Interface upgrade.
All found in nexusmods. None fix the performance but at least fixes some minor annoying stuff.

          >mods don't count
I kind of agree, but don't, especially when the mod in question is an improvement in every way over the actual game. It's one thing when it's a good, story heavy game and a modder is inserting their own characters and plotlines into that, it's another when it's more freeform and sandboxy and the modder is improving and expanding or correcting oversights.

            >especially when the mod in question is an improvement in every way over the actual game
The mod is only an improvement over Stardew's bare ass soulless NPCs. The cult that's built around it here is only holding it up because they've memed themselves into thinking it's more than it is.

              >The mod is only an improvement over Stardew's bare ass soulless NPCs
Sure, I won't argue that, but it is still an improvement over a game a lot of people already play and enjoy.
              >The cult that's built around it here is only holding it up because they've memed themselves into thinking it's more than it is.
Disagree here. They're reacting to exactly what it is. When you consider the contents of such a mod and Ganker's enthusiasm for such things it's not hard to see why it blew up those threads.

                >They're reacting to exactly what it is
No, they genuinely believe the mod makes Jas better than anything Rune Factory and the like could offer and will get angry the moment you imply otherwise.

I'll take your word for it, but I'm willing to bet that boils down to Jas being a literal child more than anything and so the mod could be way worse than it is and they would still vehemently defend it. That said the only thing I noticed she's lacking from RF is time of day dialogue.

I'm not doing any farming at the moment in anticipation of the AWL remake, although I have been feeling a small urge to replay GBC3. For a game that really doesn't let you do anything different from playthrough to playthrough, I've revisited it often.

Are the other GB HMs worth trying? I've always skipped over them, but Sara a cute.

3 blows the other two out of the water, content-wise. 1 is very barebones and 2 is a step-up, but if you haven't played any of them, I recommend going straight to 3. If you like Sara, you can marry her in 3 and the events are quite cute. Aside from that romance, there a variety of other memorable events and occurances in 3, making it one of my all-time favorite GBC games.

            Anonymous

Despite coming from such a basic system, HM3 was ridiculously memorable and varied in the kind of shit you could buy, extra activities like skiing, finding that magic egg or completing the aquarium, and just having that whole city area in general
The theatre movie of the lazy man and his flower was kino, and one of the series greatest mistakes was getting rid of things like that, and FoMT's daily tv shows

Im playing Potion Permit which is very símiliar in gameplay to HM/SoS/SV games.

So far my main complain is that dialogue seems to be repetitive, running is slow (although there's fast travel), and there are no character portraits, just sprites. Also there's only 3 bachelorettes/bachelors which is dissapointing but so far is pretty comfy, and it only costs $20.

Don't know why i pointed that out. I'm kind of drunk. Every waifu in the series is pretty flat except the weather witch in 2 and the big sister in Oceans, yet another reason 5 is unforgivable is the bird waitress isn't a marriage option.

Is that the new one with the 10,000 machines? It's not good. Everything is too easy. You can max everything in your first two seasons just by playing ultra-casual, then the rest of the game is grinding lumber and stone with your machines taking up more space than your crops or barns.

      Anonymous

It's ok and can easily hook you if you let it, but it's got a long list of mostly minor issues that pile up and drag the experience down. I'm guessing you got it cheap at this point, so you might at least get your money's worth. I ended up playing it for like 180 hours.

I liked it, despite its faults. The game's greatest strength is allowing the player to feel like they're constantly working toward something. My biggest complaint is probably how lackluster the festivals are.
Many players dislike the abundance of maker machines the game expects you to have on your farm and manage, and I wasn't a fan of that myself, but it didn't ruin the game for me. I got plenty of mileage out of my playthrough.

okay redpill me on Trio of Towns
how good is it and do I need to emulate it?

        Anonymous

Trio of Towns is a good farming game with a few questionable progression choices. There's an old Ganker guide that we put together back when the game was new so that one could power through the unlocks if one wanted to.
        https://pastebin.com/gRP8ifDJ

Of course you can take it easy and go at your own pace. You'll just be at the mercy of the seasonal changes for crop requests. Like you'll have to wait until spring comes around again to grow those crops needed for a specific request.

Emulates well too. If you do decide to play it dont forget to grab the DLC + game update.

It's a 3ds game. I couldn't tell you if those 3ds CIA sites that used to be all the rage are still up. Could always peruse the external archive and see if that gets you anywhere.
Typing Trio of Towns CIA or citra into your search bar couldn't hurt either.

Also iirc the game update required for the DLC is 1.1. I'm not 100% on this but it was like the only update for the game.

Only thing I dislike about the farming in ToT is how limited the amount of space you have feels

Lumina's new Chapter 1 design is very pretty. This hair length is perfect though I think I've seen a screenshot already that shows she still cuts it by Chapter 2.

Confirmed that Lumina still gets her short-haired timeskip design, presumably in chapter 2 like in SE.

      Anonymous

It's pretty much just her old, youthful design from the original, but taller which feels like a mistake

        Anonymous

Her hair is longer too. I don't think making her taller was a mistake. It prevents her from becoming a foot taller over the 1-2 year timeskip between chapter 1 and 2, and as much as I'm sure Ganker hates it, it makes her look less like she's prepubescent in Chapter 1.

    >More stuff to buy
    Money is often irrelevant mid-game
    >More stuff to do

    >FOMT crossover

64, BTN, FoMT/MFoMT (GBA original), Rune Factory 2, DS, IoH, SI, ToT, and AP have rival pairings. They can all be emulated easily, as far as I know. N64 emulation was notoriously ass last time I checked, but HM64 was fully playable with minor visual glitches.

I'm still working on the RF4 mod, it's slow but steady work, but it's a lot faster now that I've tweaked my workflow. It's not perfect, but the backgrounds are clearer than the original and the pencil/watercolor effect adds some much needed noise

Yes, that was me. Thank you.
The original textures are unfortunately too compressed to re-use, so I had to train an ESRGAN model to fix the sprites, but at least the backgrounds scale back down nicely.
Why the frick they decided to upscale everything 3x instead of 4x, I'll never fricking know.

So far, all the inventory items and crops are done, and I started work on the maps a while ago. The town is "done" but I discovered some issues with the alpha channels so I'll have to redo those unfortunately. It'll be much easier going now that I've found a better batch solution.
I'm making good progress with the field maps and should have the non-dungeons finished in a few days. Once I'm, done with the maps and all of the foreground map objects (they are separate for some fricking reason) I'll put it up on the nexus and finish everything afterwards.

It's ok. I'm not fond of the oversized heads of the characters. It makes them look too childlike. The fact that it is fully 3d is different from many games like it which mostly use a top-down perspective.

Decorating at first is a problem until you have more to work with and some of those options take a long time to get to.

The fishing functions alright but it is not relaxing.

I played both. 64 is my all-time favorite, but BTN is a great entry in the series. BTN has some great festivals and events that didn't survive the transition to FoMT, and it's more atmospheric than FoMT, which is why I prefer BTN.
My biggest complaint about BTN (Mineral Town) has always been that it reused the character designs from 64 when it should have redesigned everyone (which was finally done for SoSFoMT). BTN's characters and relationships are also simply a downgrade from 64's imo, but that's more subjective.

The last HM I liked, it was islands but better and bigger... except somehow I never went far in it when it came out and neither when I tried to pick it back up

      >>save the homeland
      >I never had any idea this existed? Nobody ever mentions this so it has to be mediocre
It's soulful like AWL, but the fact that the whole game is only one year long, and meant to be replayed to get different endings, and Hero of Leaf Valley existing as a remastered version of it, essentially makes it forgotten to most people

And now we enter the shitzone
      >animal parade
woops looks like this is the one I emulated and not magical melody, guess I have no idea what magical melody even looks like
      >grand bazaar
      skipped
      >hero of leaf valley
      skipped
      >tale of two towns
the game that made me realize HM went to shit and never recovered, couldn't stomach the game at all past the first season
      >story of seasons
tried it but the premade plot shit made me drop it FAST
      > trio of towns
I have no idea why I was still buying these games by this point but this was another disappointment
      >FOMT remake
amazing remake but FRICK the hunt for cursed tools, I'm not 16 anymore, I have no time for this shit
      >olive town
first modern one I actually did not dislike, the stardew valley influences are blatant but I didn't like how it became a repetitive material farming (haha) fest midgame
      >innocent life: futuristic harvest moon
Tried it a few years ago on emulator or something, wish I played it back when it came out but damn that intro is so fricking long
      >rune factory
cool when I was 18-19 but nowadays I really have a hard time even playing the remakes for some reason

      >save the homeland
      >I never had any idea this existed? Nobody ever mentions this so it has to be mediocre
It's good but it has several different means of completion. the game only lasts about, forgive my memory, 1 or 3 years? Where you're intended to accomplish at least one of the qualifications to save the villiage before the deadline. And once you do so, the game ends, credits, and it expects you to start a new game to beat it in a different qualification. it's a shorter experience. Not a slow burn like most HM games which makes it a bit of a black sheep. You can beat it in 1 or 2 days.

it's amazing that mobile games are more powerful than the switch now

StH takes place over 1 year. You can roll over much of your progress into a new game+ for the next playthrough though, and I found it very enjoyable to play the game multiple times and get different endings. StH has a great cast and atmosphere.

This is my most anticipated game of next year rn. it was among my favorite gamecube games as a kid. I just hope they dont frick it up. The game needs some more content. I hope it doesn't add homosex

I think I saw something about them adding a non-binary character to the gender choice so I wouldn't get my hopes up on that.

Why would they not add it? They've already done it to Rune Factory 5 and Friends of Mineral town remake.

Same as it does with other same-sex couples. Goddess asks you to raise a child, you then tell your spouse that you agreed to it.

He still is. He still wants you to leave him alone while you court him, still immediately abandons you after the wedding, making you wonder why you even married him, and leaves you again after acknowledging your pregnancy or adopted child.

why cant they fricking bring back the sprite portraits? even the japs have been constantly nagging the devs to bring them back to no avail

Olive Town was the first game to skip them in a long time and AWL never had them. Hopefully the next original game will just bring them back.

At least with AWL, the original game didn't have them. I would hope that portraits are on the table for the next original game if Marvelous still refuses to get a good 3D modeller on the team.

I hope this one isn't Switch Exclusive and comes to PC eventually.
Looks like 3D Stardew which I liked with friends but I cannot play a farming-only game, despite Stardew having a very simple dungeon, I need some combat thrown in, even if it's just mashing A.

I've played stardew and the first three rune factory games, but never any harvest moon or sos games. Which are the best of those games that I can emulate on my phone?

The GBA and the first two DS games are a good intro to the series and should run fine on a phone. Keep in mind that the male version of the DS game is bugged on certain releases, so do your research on which ROM is best to use. IIRC the Euro release had less issues. The girl version doesn't have as many bugs.
