What's your opinion on SF EX games? I like them more than Capcom's own polygonal fighters of the period like Rival Schools and Star Gladiator. The gameplay is fun, the graphics have their charm and the music is excellent.

I'm confused to how 20 year old EX3 looks better and has better animations and special effects than a game that came out 20 years later. (Ex Layer)
Unreal Engine is such ugly TRASH.
Well it's not really but EX3 is very underrated. It's only sin is that it didn't include missing fan favorites from the first game.
Budget and also EX3 had two games before it, so a lot of the work was already done. Ex Layer was done by like 3 dudes from scratch.
Be grateful Ex Layer was a thing because it was meant to be just an April Fool joke
They could't add other characters from Ex Layer curiously
Plus Alpha and EX2 are legit great, 3 is iffy, Fighting Layer is also really good.
My problem with EX Layer is they released the best version of it on the Switch and didn't update the others.
EX2 Plus is the shit. I love that game. And you're right about the soundtrack; it's great.
>My problem with EX Layer is they released the best version of it on the Switch and didn't update the others.
God, why did they do this? It's a really fun game.
No idea but it fixes a lot of the issues the original aka removing the awful Gougi shit, I would have re-bought the game just for that.
Depending on how you look at it SF EX is the real sequel to SFII since Akira Nishitani directed it.
Music-wise, it does sound like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM7AKydOV70
The melody sounds way closer to SF2' style than Alpha 2's soundtrack.
My dad told me that EX3 was Street Fighter 3 and I believed that for years until Third Strike Online came out.
based troll dad
He legitimately believed it himself. We didn’t have any SF3 cabinets near us and nobody gave a shit about fighting games other than MK by the year 2000.
Are you a 3rd worlder by chance? Nobody cared about MK in 2000.
Diehard Gamefan believed that EX1 was Street Fighter 3. Morons.
Very unfortunate games. Came out at a time when arcade and fighting games were falling out with the mainstream and came off as cheap cash ins on the current trend to being everything to 3d to dedicated players. Arika was a genuinely good developer who could have just made cheap "SF, but it's 3d now" games but the EX games had real passion and thought put into them. Being 25+ years old their balance and design is obviously aged but EX2+ seems to maintain a small fanbase in Japan, maybe if PS1 ever gets rollback an NA scene could exist.

They play the arcade version though. Here's some tourney footage:
why is this so hated again? looks really good for a ps1 title.
>why is this so hated again?
It is not? Just a little but under-the-radar.
Fun fact: home-exclusive EX3 was released earlier in Japan than home version of EX2 in US.
It's not. The EX games were way more popular than SFIII
I really want to play this game at some point, mainly because I like Street Fighter but never quite got into 3D fighting games.
