The two are bangers, I can’t pick one. Although I guess planescape is a more complete experience because it explores a fuller gamut of the human experience and interacts with other disciplines like philosophy more than xenogears.
Kinda. They rushed the entire second half of the game but still mostly explained the story with long ass monologues given by the characters sitting in a chair. There also was a plan to make it a 6-eras long continuity but that was scrapped after or during Xenosaga.
Soul Reaver.
Xenogears is unfinished
PS:T is up there
you could say the same about Soul Reaver, that the series isn't finished either. so it's up to debate.
>lore
Tough call. Going with Xenogears because it's original lore and super ambitious. Planescape's lore is awesome, but it's largely drawing from the setting that exists outside of the game itself. >story
More interesting stuff happens thoughout Xenogears, event-wise. But Planescape has a really awesome story and the stuff with Ravel and the end of the game was cool. I think Planescape's best parts though are the smaller moments, like certain conversations you can have. >characters
Another tough one. I want to go with Xenogears, but every Planescape party member is awesome and memorable. One of the best parties in any game.
Planescape for sure, it’s really well written and the setting is great. Definitely gets a few points knocked down since it’s just D&D based lore wise, but sigil is very cool.
xenogears for lore and story, neither really win in terms of characters. Both succumb to the rpg curse where side characters basically become non-existent after you finish there little side quest and the majority of development is focused on the main character
xenogears is a fundamentally simple story that fools stupid people into thinking is intelligent because it rips themes from a source they haven't heard of before. planescale is a fundamentally simple story that fools stupid people into thinking is intelligent because it randomly capitalizes words.
not vidya, but Book of the New Sun i think is something fundamentally complex. Still wonder when something like that can be pulled off in vidya, if thats even possible.
>if I say something considered intelligent is stupid, it will make me look super intelligent >"then name something intelligent" >uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
simple doesn't mean it's stupid. xenogears is basically a story about ancient astronauts combined with an allegory for gnosticism. planescape is about an immortal guy with amnesia. what is stupid is retards who think anything with religious themes is 2deep4u, or in planescape's case because some WORDS are written like this and there are MANY of them when FEW would have been enough.
By your standards, all of literature except some retarded redditor overly complex fanfiction is simple and could be streamlined, considering that their plots are simple.
For example, Mobt Dick is about hunting a whale. Why would you need to write more than 3 paragraphs on it?
most stories are simple because people don't like reading stories that make their heads hurt. soul reaver is not simple because it's full of shit like going back in time to have a nice day.
Xenogears is literally an excessively complex story line that is up its own ass at the same time.
It makes Battlestar Galactica look like good writing.
Shit reads like Scientology fan fiction.
at the basic level it's straightforward. it just has a lot of stuff piled on that is sort of convoluted like your former incarnation possessing your dad who is both of the masked men you run into.
You can say that about anything and strip it down to a fairly simplistic level.
The issue I repeatedly see with JRPGs is that the world building is nonsensical and somehow both simplistic and overwrought at the same time AND the plot line isn't just a world-ending catastrophe, it's some sort of metaphysical quandary that literally only makes a lick of sense within the context of the very questionable world building.
Looking at various internet sources and apparently Xenogears is somehow more convoluted than Fromsoft games, which is absolutely fucking nuts.

So, you actually don’t know shit about the game and are just shitting on it because it’s le jrpg
I think God of War is more down you lane.

I know the entire plot and it's schizoid nonsense. I guess it's not unlike Dune after the first book, but those were the bad ones.
God of War is dumb, why are you even talking about that aborted mess?
I tried playing planescape torment once and you play as some dusty corpse in a mausoleum where everything is grey, dull and won't shut the fuck up, I've never been that fucking bored in my life
Xenogears is about giant fucking anime robot, how is this even a question about which game is more interesting?
>giant fucking anime robot >interesting
Plotline reads like the local methheads got offered $100 if they could come up with a semi-coherent plot.

It's not just JRPGs. Japanese writers are uniformly terrible and do it to fucking everything. Even bare bones simplistic shit like Mega Man.

I want to expand on this.
Western science fiction, and you can somewhat stretch this to speculative fiction, looks at a one or maybe a handful of possible questions and how they would impact our understanding of reality. >Frankenstein - What if we could create life? Would it have a soul? Would it have value? >Island of Dr. Moreau - Basically Frankenstein, but this time we're creating life from animals not corpses >The Time Machine - What if we could travel through time? Could we change the future? etc
Xenogears detaches itself from the human condition and asks what if we were a random human colony accidently founded 10,000 years ago by a rogue AI with the purpose of harvesting all of us in order to repair said AI once we reach sufficient levels of biomass.
Also, you're effectively, not humans, but simulcra of what we think humans actually are.
Also, the MC has the DNA of this kid that survived the original crash and because of that he's the only one who can stop the harvest.
How the fuck is anyone supposed to relate to that at all?
Seriously, what the fuck is the point of that story?

dont remember the wave existence being a machine , thats more of a xenoblade thing and thats not even accurate
I've been wondering lately, isn't it kind of unusual for Xenogears' protagonist to be named Fei Fong Wong? That's a Chinese name, isn't it? When was the last time where was a JRPG with a Chinese male protagonist? Seems like since Xenogears there are just occasionally a Chinese girl side character, and the protagonists always have either a euro or japanese sounding name.
they make an exception for stealing chinese folk heroes like goku/wukong or three kingdoms. "fei fong wong" is an homage of fei hong wong (wong fei hong), a legendary kung fu master
Xenogears because it has more going on philosophically tho it isn't as self contained as planescape. I think kotor 2 and new vegas do chris avellone better and gears is still a must play if you want to understand the modern xeno games.
it's a good idea to ask tbh, I emulated it last year and then everyone laughed at me for not playing the patched version with all the enhancements and fixes and stuff
I would recommend the perfect works mod instead. It only covers disc one (most of the game) and makes some things a lot clearer. Some of the nomenclature changes can be confusing early on (Aveh = Av, Gebler = Geburah) but the scoot is much better overall. The gameplay changes are all optional and modular so you can pick and choose.
Go read the Xenogears plot outline on wikipedia.
I swear to god everytime I read the plotline for a JRPG not made by Fromsoftware it is absolute schizo shit and Xenogears is no different.
God damn the plot is a series of convoluted noise and ass pulls for no fucking reason.
The main character not only has a split personality, he also is a direct descendant of the super special gay and this gives him special powers to fuck shit up.
That's fucking dumb.
>The main character not only has a split personality, he also is a direct descendant of the super special gay and this gives him special powers to fuck shit up. >That's fucking dumb.
It's fucking awesome because you're playing it. More convoluted means more cool shit happens. The game is a great ride.
There aren’t many asspulls in xenogears. Almost everything is forewarned. Even one of the main plot twists of the game is literally shown to you 20 hours before it happens but you don’t have the context to understand it.
I like the part where you go to the shadow government's sky citadel and find out they've been holding us back with genetic limiters, so you use their nanomachines to released your genetic limiters and gain super powers, then you decide to use a mass driver to release nanomachines into the atmosphere so everyone on the planets limiters get removed, but where it gave you super powers because you have pure anima because you're attuned to one of the 12 original humans, it just turns the plebs into blood thirsty cannibalistic monsters because those limiters were the only thing keeping them human causing an international apocalypse and untold death and destruction with roving bands of monsters eating their former friends and loved ones, before starving to death once they ran out of people to eat and blood to drink wiping out a good 95% of the planet's population. Oops.
I tried playing planescape torment once and you play as some dusty corpse in a mausoleum where everything is grey, dull and won't shut the fuck up, I've never been that fucking bored in my life
Xenogears is about giant fucking anime robot, how is this even a question about which game is more interesting?
The seething from both parts of the agreement are in such terrible terms that i doubt takahashi wants to work with them and SE is unwilling to do anything with the ip beyond merch.
I like PS:T but ironically the highlights of the game are all conversations and dialogue talking about lore, characters, and other stuff you never see in-game. The Smouldering Corpse and the whorehouse are highlights for that reason. Combat though is so bad I wish they scrapped it.
Isn't Xenogears unfinished?
that's just a meme
Budget ran out midway through and they had to make one long cutscene to explain the story instead
The two are bangers, I can’t pick one. Although I guess planescape is a more complete experience because it explores a fuller gamut of the human experience and interacts with other disciplines like philosophy more than xenogears.

it really is the evangelion of video games holy shit

Xenogears by a hair.

The best jrpg and wrpg have to offer (in terms of plot at least, lol)
Both stand proudly together above the rest.
Planescape obviously. It's better in terms of gameplay too since there's less of it and it's just basic infinity engine combat.
xenogears is a fundamentally simple story that fools stupid people into thinking is intelligent because it rips themes from a source they haven't heard of before. planescale is a fundamentally simple story that fools stupid people into thinking is intelligent because it randomly capitalizes words.
What are fundamentally complex story examples?
Idk
Tsukihime?
I mean, i just told you i didn't know
I just pulled the pseudest shit i remember at the moment
so you can't name anything? Alright, then shut the fuck up.
Nah
Embarrassing
fuck off Nasu.
you are still not allowed on the literature club.
idk stuff with time travel
Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With (You)
not vidya, but Book of the New Sun i think is something fundamentally complex. Still wonder when something like that can be pulled off in vidya, if thats even possible.

what the fuck is wrong with chinese names
His name is Chinese but he’s from Shevat which is a sect of self-hating garden gnomes that split off from Solaris.
Xenogears because it has more going on philosophically tho it isn't as self contained as planescape. I think kotor 2 and new vegas do chris avellone better and gears is still a must play if you want to understand the modern xeno games.
How do I play Xenogears in this day and age?
gosh anon, I have no idea. Have you tried emulation?
No because I don't know how it works tbh
did you only start using a computer today?
Rule #2
Modern emulation is the most basic bitch shit in the world, anon.
There is no excuse.
You must be 18 or older to post here.
it's a good idea to ask tbh, I emulated it last year and then everyone laughed at me for not playing the patched version with all the enhancements and fixes and stuff
duckstation with this (QoL patch):
https://github.com/NoharOSP/Perfect_Works_Build
get the rom from cdromance or vimm's lair
Soulless
Is this bait?
Xenogears vs Planescape Torment is just a fun comparison because they are both wildly ambitious games for their time
Hey guys, what is better? The Godfather Part 2 or Akira?
Both suck dick. Mulholland drive is the best film, best anime film is perfect blue
Godfather 2, all Akira has going for it is it's 10/10 animation, the rest of it is only above average
moron here, is Xenogears 2.0 fine? It speeds up text with a bunch qol shit, shouldn't touch the script. Dub or undub for Xenosaga?
>Dub or undub for Xenosaga?
Some of the english voices are nice but the cast changes ffrom game to game, so undub would be more consistent

It's because you don't understand storytelling lol. You don't ask why those things are happening you simply complain about them.
The main character not only has a split personality, he also is a direct descendant of the super special gay and this gives him special powers to fuck shit up.
That's fucking dumb.
>The main character not only has a split personality, he also is a direct descendant of the super special gay and this gives him special powers to fuck shit up.

Name three deep philosophical masterpieces.
the 120 days of sodom

I like how this entire plotline begins and is resolved in 15 minutes, including a dungeon and a boss battle.
Happens to the best of us.
>*Mother eating her children in the background*
>Bart, are we the baddies?
they got better
too bad about the robot death angels afterwards though
>they got better
*The people who were turned into wels or got eaten by those turned into wels did not get better.

Why the fuck cant square enix just make a port or a director's cut collab with Takahashi already
The seething from both parts of the agreement are in such terrible terms that i doubt takahashi wants to work with them and SE is unwilling to do anything with the ip beyond merch.
Oh well at least Takahashi got the rights for xenosaga again i guess
I like PS:T but ironically the highlights of the game are all conversations and dialogue talking about lore, characters, and other stuff you never see in-game. The Smouldering Corpse and the whorehouse are highlights for that reason. Combat though is so bad I wish they scrapped it.
